About the area

Walk the quiet beaches of the Pointe or hike the Nature trails. You may wish to visit Jarrell's Cove State Park or Jarrell's Cove Marina. There are local artists on the island. Nearby there are lakes and the splendor of the Olympic Mountains and Hoods Canal. For the most part you will be lost in time relaxing within the gates of the Pointe itself as there are activities for everyone and really no need to venture further, Swim, soak, exercise, tennis, basketball. ping pong, pool, dig clams, fish and more. Nearby is Seattle with Safeco Field & Seahawk's Stadium, Thirty minutes drive to Bremerton's Naval Shipyard or the State Capital in Olympia, There are also some great golf courses close by. About Harstine Island There's a little place called paradise that we all like to go when we want to get away from it all. Many people have different ideas and names for it. We call it Harstine Island. Harstine Island offers peace, quiet and tranquility with breathtaking views, abundant wildlife and great fun for the whole family. This island is heavily forested with Douglas Fir, Hemlock and Cedar trees. There are much wild life from deer and wild birds to ocean beach sea life such as sea lions, seals, and otters. Yet civilization is but a short 10 minutes drive to the small town of Shelton, Washington. The big cities are only minutes away yet this 48.305 km2 (18.651 sq mi) island is tucked away in the Pudget Sound as a secret hide away. On this island is a private gated community known as Hartstene Pointe minutes drive from the only bridge to the island. Hartstene Pointe is a gated, 215 acre community encompassing the northern tip of the island. Guests there enjoy a secluded, wooded setting with bountiful wildlife surrounded by 3.5 miles of private beaches, breathtaking views of the Puget Sound, Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier. Enjoy the wild life that this region of Puget Sound has to offer. The abundance of sea life includes otter, sea lions, seals, at least five species of colorful sea stars, Red Box crab, and two types of jellyfish. There are moon snail, several varieties of clams that range from smaller than a dime to more than 8 inches across as well as oysters. On the beaches you will find lots of shells as well as areas where live sand dollars grow. Bald eagles nest and are seen during the early Spring. Seagulls, herons, ducks, cormorants, and other birds are common sights year round. Also, deer and raccoons are common sightings and occasionally red foxes, too. There are so many activities to choose from the clubhouse, marina, boat launches, lagoon, playgrounds, nature trails, covered picnic areas, and pristine sand and pebble beaches. This includes boating, fishing, and crabbing, digging clams, beach-combing. Off the water there are nature trails, four tennis courts, a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, covered picnic areas with stoves and fire pits, quiet paved roads for walks, bicycles, or skates. The clubhouse provides a lending library where you can borrow videos, books, puzzles, and games, comfy sofas and chairs near a fireplace, a pool table and ping pong table. Spend a fun evening on the beach making S'mores at one of the Harstine Pointes gazeboes. For more things to do, visit Shelton, Washington and explore the surrounding areas.

This house is one of the best designed and equipped homes that we,ve stayed in while visiting Washington state.Everything was quality. We will definiitely rent again.

The pictures on the website do not do this property justice. This cabin truly looks like it was decorated to be included in the pages of a pottery barn catalogue. It was spacious, well appointed, clean and more than well considered. The kids in our group fully enjoyed the three televisions, electronic keyboard and movie library. Although with beaches to comb, nature trails to walk, ping pong to play, bikes to ride and swimming to be had, the indoor activities were merely an afterthought. If you want your kids to unplug, there isn't a better location. The adults enjoyed the quiet surroundings, which occasionally included a visit from the local wildlife, and the well appointed book library. What a treat. We will be back.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your comments. Our goal is to provide a comfortable setting away from home with amenities to make a relaxing and memorable vacation. Harry Barmon

“Harstine Island R&R”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2013

We spent a week at Barmon's beautiful home in early August and could not have been more pleased with our stay. The home is beautiful and filled with everything needed to make your stay comfortable and interesting. We enjoyed the bikes, the flashlights, the field glasses and want to use of the raft next time we visit. We started our mornings by the living room fire reading our books and looking out the picture windows at the forest, spent our afternoons on the beach at the Pointe and our nights watching the meteorite showers, the Milky Way and the bioluminescence in the water. We have been coming to Harstine Island with our family for vacation for twenty-four years and feel we have found our favorite place to stay. Every year we go to the Saturday Farmers Market at the community hall for pies, sweet rolls and produce all from the island and visit our favorite island pottery artist on Sunday afternoon. This home was exceptionally hospitable and we will definitely be back.

Owner's reply: Diane Thank you very much for your review. We are pleased that your stay was enjoyable. We also hope that you return to Hartstene in the future and decide to stay with us again. Thank s again Harry & Sue Barmon .

“Great Place”

We had a wonderful time. The home is completely furnished. All you need to bring with you is your own personal items, food and a willingness to leave stress behind (we put ours in the car trunk as soon as we arrived.).

Owner's reply: We strive to provide a recreational environment that is relaxing and full of fun. We welcome comments so that we can be in tune with the needs if our guests.

We had a wonderful time at our rental home. We had no problems whatsoever. Everything was clean and directions made it easy to find. Very private and nice family room, we played cards while the kids watched movies on the big screen. We will definitely plan another trip there.

Owner Supplied Testimonials

I wish there were more stars than 5. I also wish we had more time to stay. This is by far the best kept, best stocked home. The pictures don't do it justice. The communities/ammenities were great. There were over4 different beach areas to choose from, all very well maintained. This doesnt feel like a rental, it feels like you are staying at a friends house. When we drove through the gate it felt as if we were in a different state all together. The houses are built around the forest and island. Nature is all around you. We saw deer, racoons, squirells and every kind of bird imaginable. The house is beautiful, all the needed amenities, and plenty of space. We had 4 adults and 6 kids and had more than enough room. Harry really went all out on this "Home". Thank you Harry so very much for this great expericence, we will see you again in the summer!

My family has made an annual summer trip for 18 years and this trip was by far and away the best yet. The home was wonderful and very comfortable. The absence of a TV signal was a blessing. The entire stay was extremely relaxing and I highly recommend this home to anyone wanting to just get away for refreshing vacation. Everyone we met in the community was very friendly and made us feel at home. My only regret is that one week was not long enough. I will try and rectify that shortfall next year. Thanks again Harry. Just spent a terrific weekend 4/4 - 4/6 at this wonderful place. Unfortunately a weekend just wasn't enough! We actually lucked out, considering the time of year, and had beautiful weather. The setting of this intimate community is gorgeous, and has plenty to offer. Beach, forest, trails & wildlife. The house and all it's amenites, was fantastic! Hope to return sometime this summer for a full week! Much thanks to the Barman's for sharing this wonderful place.

Lovely, homey, well kept home and grounds

We thoroughly enjoyed the setting and coziness of the home and surrounding area. However we think it was not a great fit for a family with very little children. (1-3) We also had two other grandkids for two days (3-6). We also did not fully understand the distance from the island to outside activities or shopping. It is a place we may truly want to try when we want a getaway alone or with family when the children are much older. Thank yo so much for sharing your amazing home.
Owner's Response: We strive to represent our vacation home accurately without misrepresentations. Our home is located on the northern tip of an island in South Puget Sound and not in the City of Shelton or Seattle. Harstene Island does not have cities like Friday Harbor but then it does have the peace and serenity of getting away from the congestion associated with larger populated areas. My grandchildren who are now 5, 11 and 16 years old have visited the Pointe since being in infants. They have enjoyed playing on the beach picking up shells, throwing rocks in the water, playing in the kids waiting pool and having s'mores down at the gazebos on the beach.

Great place for our family!

The home was large enough to accomodate our family. We were in the area for a family wedding in Shelton. We were able to walk down to the beach/water, enjoy the pool at the clubhouse with our kids, bbq food on the deck. Very clean, everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The owners were available to answer any questions. Harry was very good at answering or retuning phone calls or emails during the renting process and during our stay if needed. The island location is beautiful.

The only reason I did not give 5 stars is for 3 small reasons and 2 of them are not the owners fault. 1; there is a low profile electrical box that is located at the end of the driveway...I hit it with the fender of my rental car...not the ideal spot for such a utility; again Harry was very understanding and helpful. 2; The contact lady for the HOA or POA of the island just was not very friendly (not sure of the right word) with us...just seemed kind of annoyed with having renters on the island. We only had to deal with her for a total 5-10 minutes for the trip. 3; Initially getting into the community could be a little easier, if security or contact lady is not readily available you are sitting and waiting for the code to get in through the gate and possibly in the way of others getting into the community.

We do recommend this property, great house! Really nice owners!

" Camping at the Hilton"

We normally do a family camp out every summer. This year was a little different, we couldn't find a campground, motel or cabin in the area we wanted to go. I was really lucky to find this home at a really late notice. Everyone was satisfied. It was in the woods with lots of nature all around us. We had deer looking in those big windows every morning. The kids were busy all week with bike riding, swimming, tennis, ping pong and lots of games and movies. The house was roomy, clean and very well stocked. I just hope we can go again, sure beats sleeping in a tent.

Hi Harry -- we were so happy with your Harstene Island home. The spaces were welcoming and flexible; we had ample room for yoga behind the big sectional, and it was great to find the place so well equipped and supplied.

One of the group was impressed by the sturdiness of the bunk beds -- she needs to buy a set for her teenagers, and wondered where you bought them. Do you happen to remember?
So thanks for providing such a lovely home. Hope to be back!
