About the area

Topsail Island (pronounced "Topsul") is one of the best-kept secrets among East Coast beaches. Located along North Carolina's southern outerbanks, Topsail Island is a 26 mile long barrier island of spacious sandy beaches and tranquil maritime forests. It's hard to discover such a place today as friendly and casual, with such pristine sand and surf, water sports, recreation, fine dining and shopping adventures. This is Topsail Island located midway between Wilmington, to the south and Jacksonville, to the north. The island consists of three towns, North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach. The two mainland towns of Sneads Ferry and Holly Ridge complete the section known as the Greater Topsail Area. Two bridges allow access to the island, a landmark swing bridge on NC Route 50 to Surf City, or by NC Route 210 over a high-rise bridge nearer to North Topsail Beach

“Dream Vacation”

Reviewed 15 Jul 2012

Our group consisted of two young families and my husband and myself (grandparents). The house is beautifully decorated and generally clean. The pool was wonderful for young children who cannot be in the ocean all day long. The beach is fantastic, with waves for body surfing and shallow tidal pools for todlers; so clear you could see little fish! Nights out looking for crabs were exciting. Just a wonderful experience for all of us. We brought child gates to close off the stairways to keep little ones safe. My only criticism is that the house could use a deeper cleaning. The mattress pads were dirty ( we covered them up with our own) and the bunk bed room needs to be better vacuumed, under beds especially. The whirlpool tub needs some maintenance as black flecks came out of the jets when used. Great place and we would love to go back again!

“Great House & Location”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2011

Our families consisted of 4 teens & 4 adults. So as far as sleeping arrangements, no problems there. In addition to the four bathrooms, located in each bedroom, that was great. The linens & towel arrangement worked out perfectly. There were plenty of towels to satisfy the girl's needs (6 total), but if there was an issue, the washer & dryer was standing ready. The beach and location (N topsail) is ideal if you don't want all of the noise, stores & commotion. It was one of the nicest beaches we've visited over the years. Because the congested condos were at least 5 lots away on either side, made the beach nice and open nearest the house. So while you relax in front of the waves, you'll get an occasional walker or two but no large groups. Also, public access was far enough that you wouldn't be affected by the traffic (parking & people). High tide reaches to about 20 feet from the bottom stair but when it's low tide, the water is quite a distance away. No turtle nests near us but there are some halfway from the house towards the pier. The pier is about 2.6 miles away. We all liked the house very much with regard to floor plan and layout. However, maintenance and a good cleaning was needed. For example, the pool light didn't work. The people who come to clean the pool said they notified an electrician about it when we first arrived, but while we were there, the light wasn't fixed. Also, a few light bulbs were needed and didn't arrive until day 6. What's worse, the recessed lights in the kitchen ceiling are so high, we couldn't change them. No ladder is available, nor a step stool. In addition, the fans hanging in the bedrooms needed the blades tightened. Thankfully we brought basic tools (pliers, adjustable wrench, hammer, screwdriver and duct-tape). The deck has 5 adirondack style chairs and the pool has a couple of lounge chairs and a couple of regular chairs. No tables for outdoor meals. There are two built in benches at the end of the deck leading towards the beach though. Great for early evening refreshments or cocktails. One nice surprise was that the moon rises in front of the house. Again, a good cleaning is needed (accumulated dust and dirt on the microwave, along baseboards, under furniture etc.) Also, not enough flatware and utensils are ready for the trash. Kitchen equipment is needed. Glad we brought knives & cutting boards. Their stuff is pretty bad. Rental agents are great to work with, but they can only do so much.
