Description of the Huron vacation home rental
October 3, 2016: I'm NOW BOOKING 2017 SUMMER WEEKS. Reserve your preferred 2017 vacation week while it is still available. Your very own private beach and lakeside deck await your family and best friends.

* * * * * * * *

Looking for a great place for a memorable family vacation? Near Cedar Point and a wide variety of fun things to do? Where you and your family can relax on your own fully-private, sandy beach? And be as active or relaxed as you want? Where you can invite a few friends to spend a day at the beach with you? And stay in a one-story home that grandma and grandpa can enjoy too? All just an easy drive from anywhere in Ohio?

Then look no further.

This 1700 sq. ft. home where I grew up sits on over two acres of lakefront property on Lake Erie, about midway between Huron and Vermilion, Ohio. It features a 120-foot fully-private beach for your exclusive enjoyment. You and your family can swim in the warm Lake Erie water, enjoy your time on the lakeside deck, build a nighttime fire right on the beach, and enjoy all that Lake Erie offers.

The home sleeps up to eight in its three bedrooms, and offers central heat and air conditioning. You won't believe the spacious 40-foot Great Room -- check out the pictures! The adjoining open kitchen is fully-stocked with all the pots, pans, dishes, bakeware, large and small appliances, utensils, casual and formal table service, gadgets, spices and other items you and your guests might reasonably need. And the adjoining screened-in Sun Room is amazing! It offers loads of interesting old wicker and wrought iron furniture for your outdoor dinner or after-dinner gathering. Relaxing and entertaining in your rental is a snap; there's even a piano! The beach area, including a large lakeside deck and newer four-burner propane grill is also equipped to accommodate your entire family and perhaps a few daytime guests. We even provide an electric golf-size cart with a large box trunk to help transport you and your cooler, firewood, and other supplies right down to the deck.

And of course, there are tons of things to do in the area. Cedar Point, the Islands and several waterparks are very nearby. You know that. But did you know about all the other attractions, like the many boating and fishing options? River kayaking and canoeing? The large nature preserves and parks? The farm markets, farm stands, orchards and wineries? The quaint towns and villages? The golf courses? The brand-new 30-acre zip-line near Oberlin? The fairs and summer festivals? Or the world renowned drag racing facility in Norwalk? You could stay a whole month and not see everything.

Finally, we want to mention that though the home is a bit older, it has a modern layout and is freshened up very nicely. Many of its furnishings are brand new, including the beds and bedding, the gas stove and oven, TWO four-burner propane grills (one at the house, one at the deck), some of the deck furniture and much of the cookware and other kitchen items. Yet there are also many interesting antiques and other furnishings throughout the home and its Sun Room.

So please check out the many pictures. They tell the story of this amazing vacation opportunity. We have listed this property for the very first time (January, 2016) and encourage you to give it a try. You won't find another vacation property with a FULLY private beach (not crowded and shared) at such a modest price. We hope you will consider spending a week with us this summer, or a long weekend in the spring, fall or over a holiday. We'll do everything we reasonably can to help you enjoy your stay. And if you do, we hope you will let others know. Thank you!
Area Information
There are literally dozens of attractions in the vicinity of the beach house. When you and your family are our guests, you are:

* 14 miles from Cedar Point, which is deservedly known as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World, thanks to ten miles (!) of steel coaster track. Check out the new 2016 Valravn, the tallest, fastest "drop" coaster in the world! Cedar Point is the area's single top attraction by far.

* 10-15 miles from waterparks galore: Soak City Waterpark (an outdoor waterpark adjacent to Cedar Point), Kalahari Waterpark (America's largest indoor waterpark) and Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark (operated by Cedar Point). Day passes to the waterparks are subject to availability.

* 30 miles from Port Clinton and the high-speed Jet Express to South Bass Island. You can also reach South Bass in more leisurely fashion via the Miller ferry from downtown Sandusky. South Bass Island is home to the island city of Put-in-Bay, Perry's Monument, a couple wineries, the Butterfly House, Perry's Cave and the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society. If you have time, you may also want to visit Middle Bass Island and Kelly's Island. Port Clinton and Lake Erie's islands offer many interesting things to see and do.

* Surrounded by many fishing and boating opportunities. Launch your own watercraft at Cranberry Creek Marina, just a half-mile to the west. Or join one of the many charters from Huron or Vermilion. Fishermen will love fishing for walleye and lake perch. Pleasure boaters will appreciate convenient access to the lake. Or simply bring a kayak to the beach house!

* 6 miles from historic Downtown Vermilion. Vermilion was first settled in 1837 as a fishing village and features quaint shops, fine dining (including the renowned Chez Francois), the arts, entertainment and lots of summertime festivals and other festivities. Check the city's Internet site for a schedule of activities.

* 5 miles from Huron, Ohio, another lakeside community. Huron is also a boating town, offering several fishing and boating charters. The Huron Boat Basin offers free entertainment (including its weekend concert series) throughout the summer months. Huron Pier is a scenic place for a walk. Again, check Huron's Internet site.

* 35 miles from the Marblehead Lighthouse. The Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Climb to the top for spectacular views of the Islands, Cedar Point and beyond. Tours are offered May thru October. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the 9-acre Marblehead Lighthouse State Park.

* 12 miles from the village of Milan, Ohio, the birthplace of Thomas Edison. You can tour Edison's birthplace itself, and also the adjacent Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum. Milan hosts the "Milan Melon Festival" annually over Labor Day weekend.

* Mere miles from several nature preserves and large parks. Of particular interest are Old Woman Creek State Nature Preserve just a couple miles down the road (one of Ohio's few remaining natural estuaries), Edison Woods Reserve (1300+ acres with several miles of hiking trails), Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve (with a large stretch of undeveloped shoreline) and Mill Hollow / Bacon Woods (with its large gorge south of Vermilion) .

* 15 miles from Summit Motorsports Park, one of the top quarter-mile drag racing facilities in the world. Summit offers big-time IHRA ET Brackets racing, and strives to be family friendly.

* Amidst several nearby wineries. Quarry Hill Winery, Paper Moon Vineyards, Vermilion Valley Vineyards, Matus Winery, Firelands Winery and Hermes Vineyards & Winery are all just a short drive.

* 15 miles from waterfront Sandusky, including the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, the Follett House Museum and the Merry-Go-Round Museum. The Old House Guild of Sandusky also showcases beautiful old Sandusky houses throughout the year, and the waterfront area features one of the most beautiful collections of historic architecture in the Midwest. And of course tons of Lake Erie perch and walleye are brought into Sandusky every day. Watch 'em get cleaned, then take some back to the beach house for a homemade fish fry. There's plenty of pans and griddles! And freeze some up in an ice ball to take back home.

* 6 miles from kayaking or canoeing the Vermilion River, via West River Paddle Sports. The Vermilion River is navigable for many miles inland, and out past the "lagoon" houses into Lake Erie. West River Paddle Sports’ fleet offers stability, and comfort, and ease-of-use.

* Surrounded by many farm markets, farm stands and orchards throughout the area. There are too many to even list, but the best bets nearby are the Quarry Hill farm stand a few miles south of the house on Mason Road, and the Vermilion Farm Market on Saturday from 10-2. But there are many other options. So take some fresh produce and other food items to the beach house or back home with you, no matter when your summer or fall stay. Berries appear as early as late June. Late July through early September is sweet corn season. Mid-August starts peach season here in Northern Ohio. The fall brings apples galore. And don't forget local favorite Stein's Honey out of nearby Collins, Ohio.

* Also amidst several lighthouses. There are six within 25 miles of the house: South Bass Island, Marblehead, Cedar Point, Huron, Vermilion and Lorain. Vermilion's has recently been refurbished with the Sept 2016 addition of a new (replica) Fresnel lens. If you choose just one, make it Marblehead. Lighthouse enthusiasts have plenty to see right nearby.

* Just a few miles from a handful of public golf courses, most notably Thunderbird Hills Golf Course on the banks of the Huron River, which offers 36 challenging holes. Sawmill Creek is private but has been known to take reservations. So bring your sticks!

* 28 miles from African Safari Wildlife Park. The African Safari is another family attraction that you can drive through and feed the animals, including giraffes, camels, bison, zebras and others.

* 10 miles from Ventures Aloft Hot Air Balloon Ride Company. View the spectacular Lake Erie shoreline and Islands from a hot air balloon! The trip lasts from 45 minutes to an hour, with the destination depending on the wind. After the ride is over, you'll be returned to the Sawmill Creek launch point for a traditional celebration.

* 16 miles from Common Ground Canopy (Zip-Line) Tours. Opened in 2014, the treetops tour includes seven zip-lines, three sky bridges and three elevated staircases spread across 30 acres.

With all this to do close by, why not stay an extra week, or come back in 2017. We're eager to facilitate a great stay.

Best Time of the Year to Travel
Best time of the year to travel? That depends on your group. Families (including grandma and grandpa) will enjoy summer weeks when school's out. The lake is warm, sandy and shallow, and usually pretty calm. "Friends" groups can enjoy spring or fall weeks or weekends at off-season rates. The large lakeside deck and the home's Sun Room are great places to relax and entertain. Fishing and boating groups can use the ample watercraft parking and nearby launch in the off-season. And in 2017 I'll be helping with small wedding ceremonies from mid-May through mid-October. Want to get married or renew your vows on the beach? Just contact me and I'll help any way I can. Thanks Tim

Just Like my childhood vacations on the Lake :)

September 8, 2016

If you grew up with Lake Erie as your vacation playground this is the ideal vacation spot for you. We stayed over the Labor Day weekend and as you would expect there was quite a lot of activity on the Lake. The weather was perfect and we had the ideal location with private the deck and beach. The house was so well stocked with all of the cooking items that you could prepare a gourmet meal or just grill some burgers for your family. The house was very clean, and spacious, there was plenty of room to have guests and share your vacation experience. Tim could not have been any more friendly and helpful. We already booked for next year and we will stay the entire week.

Owner's reply:

Kathy I'm delighted that you and your guests enjoyed your Lake Erie stay so much. Yes it was a busy weekend! The weekdays are almost always quiet though, so your stay next year will include a little bit of everything. Oh and I really appreciate that you chose my place for your late summer fun. See you next year.... Tim

Amazing family experience

August 31, 2016

My family stayed a week at Tim's cottage, and enjoyed every second of it! The house was sparkling clean and full of everything we may possibly need from linens to beach towels (tons!!), extra bedding, condiments, stocked medicine cabinet, even skewers for roasting marshmallows on the fire pit. The beach was lovely and private with stunning views of the sunsets. The water was shallow enough for quite a long way for my children to play independently without causing too many heart attacks! We picked tomatoes and peppers for our dinners daily and enjoyed produce from the farmstand nearby. The golf cart really made a smooth vacation even smoother. We will be back!! Thanks Tim!

Tim Liston

Owner's reply:

Hi Monica. I'm happy that your family enjoyed the stay so much. August is a pretty neat time around here. The fun and relaxation of the lake and beach couples nicely with all the countryside edibles now in abundance. I hope you do come back.... Tim

Great family vacation on the Lake!

August 17, 2016

We had the pleasure of staying at Tim's house in early August. The house, the yard, the lakefront deck and, of course, the private beach were all great. I can't say enough about how well equipped the home/property is. Absolutely everything is provided down to bottled water in the fridge! The golf cart made getting things to/from the beach a breeze and the lake front deck had ample storage for things we wanted to leave there for the week. Tim was a very gracious host and the entire rental process was first rate (good communication, easy check-in/check-out, etc.). This will definitely be on our short list of places to return to!

Tim Liston

Owner's reply:

Hey thanks Bob. You and your family were great guests, and I'm really glad you enjoyed your stay. It would be great to have you back but I'm well aware that there are other fine destinations. I'm grateful that you sampled mine.... Tim

We wanted a beach vacation, but somewhere besides Florida. We found the listing for this property and immediately booked it. Tim was great to answer all of our questions from the beginning, and he communicated with us until the day we arrived. Upon arrival, he was there to welcome us and give us a tour of the house and property. The house was very well-kept, comfortable and stocked with more than we could have possibly expected. There were plenty of windows and doors to open throughout the house and beautiful sunroom, and the air conditioning worked well when we needed it. The deck was a great place to grill, eat, and watch the beautiful sunsets. We walked on the private beach, swam in the lake (shallow water and no rip currents), and built fires in the fire ring. While there, we visited Cedar Point, Marblehead Lighthouse, Kelleys Island via ferry, and Vermillion. But we really enjoyed just relaxing at this wonderful lake house and taking in all the beauty of the area. Thanks, Tim for making our family's summer vacation one of the best we've ever had!

Tim Liston

Owner's reply:

Wow! Lana (and Brian, et. al.) I'm so glad you had such a good time at my place. And it sounds like you found the time for some of the local attractions. I wish you all many more memorable vacations wherever you go.... Tim

This owner thought of everything that one could possible need for an enjoyable stay on Lake Erie. Our family loved this beautiful home and the terrific lake and views. We sat out on the deck every morning with our coffee and often ended the day in the same place, watching the sun set. We hope to return to this special place some time in the future.

We stayed here in June 2016 and had a wonderful experience. Tim made sure we had everything needed from beach chairs, grills, beach towels, wood and even water in the fridge! Great location on a beautiful private beach and only 15 miles from Cedar Point. The golf cart was a great addition making getting stuff back and forth from the beach a breeze. There was plenty of space for our family of 6! Would definitely stay here again if we were to visit Ohio in the future!

My husband and I took our 2 grandsons and our daughter joined us later in the week. We give it a 5 star rating only because that is the highest to give. Beautiful, fully equipped home, large yard for us to enjoy yard games and a private beach. We could not have asked for more. We sat on the deck at night overlooking the lake and watched the sunset behind the distant view of Cedar point. We enjoyed picking up seashells and looking for "lucky stones" on the private beach. We enjoyed strawberries at the table in the sunroom while the family put together a puzzle on the night there was a thunderstorm. The strawberries were provided by the owner. The sunroom provided an enjoyable evening even if it was raining outside. We could see the waves crashing on the beach. The next day provided many "treasures" of shells and sandglass which occupied the kids for hours on end. We did not want to leave. It was the most relaxing vacation we have had in a long time and no doubt about it we plan to make this a yearly event for our family. Just down the road was "Old Woman's Creek" and we enjoyed hiking the trails there. We even got to see a few eagles in flight from the reserve to the trees at the rental. Talk about nature at it's finest! Thank you Tim. You are a wonderful host.

Tim Liston

Owner's reply:

Thanks Brenda. I'm especially glad the boys enjoyed the stay. I hope Mother Nature coughs up some more shells for my upcoming guests! She usually does, but not always. And I'm glad you found "Old Woman Creek." It's the most natural remaining Lake Erie estuary - Mother Nature at her finest, three minutes from the house. See you again next summer.... Tim

I have to start off by saying Thank you to Tim for letting my family enjoy a week of the most relaxing time we have had in a long time. We loved sitting at the beach having the fire going in the fire pit it was so nice my kids loved every minute. We enjoyed the house how clean and up to date it was a everything you could imagine was there to use through out the whole house. Pans, dishes flat wear, cups, mugs and so much more very nice cook ware that made it easy to cook great meals. It was nice to sit at the beach and watch the sunset every night. the beds were comfortable and lots of space in all the bedrooms. Our family are already planning on the next visit to this quiet relaxing very clean Lakefront house again next year!! We highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a private beach for vacation this is the place to go.

Tim Liston

Owner's reply:

Thank you back Andrea! You and your family were great guests. Having grown up here, I sometimes forget how peaceful this place is. It was my pleasure to make sure the beach and home were clean and well-equipped, and that there was plenty of firewood for your late evenings. I do hope you'll be back when you are next inclined.... We found the home very clean and well-equipped, the beds were new and quite comfortable. The home is very private but convenient to Huron, Sandusky and Vermilion. We were there to fish but Cedar Point and Put-in-Bay are both close. The beach is big and perfect for families. The owner was quick to respond to email and questions and a very good host. We will be coming back to this home in the future.

Tim Liston

Owner's reply:

Thank you Leroy, and thank your fishing buddies for me too. I’m really glad you liked the place and I hope you all took home coolers full of tasty walleye. Please return soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the home handicapped accessible? What about the lakeside deck and the beach?
A: Here's the relevant information. The home (including the Sun Room) is all on one level and there is not even one full step in the whole place, just thresholds at exterior doorways. So the home is well-suited for older people (grandma and grandpa) with limited mobility. But the door frames are standard width, not wide, about 29" or so. So wheelchair access depends on the chair. And the toilet is somewhat difficult for a wheelchair-bound person to access without taking a step or two, though there is a helpful grab bar. The shower/tub has three grab bars. As for the deck, if the individual can get into and out of the golf cart, he/she should be able to access the deck, perhaps with some help. The wheelchair can be loaded into the back of the cart and driven down to the deck. Getting to the beach from the deck by way of a wheelchair is not possible as there are several stairs and a sand path to traverse. But the deck is very close to the beach and lake and very enjoyable in its own right. Please call or email for more information, and we can send you additional pictures if that would help.
Q: Who do you consider an ideal renter of the home and property?
A: Ideal would be a larger family with kids, or two small families. On some days, mom or dad could drop off the older children at Cedar Point for the day and sight-see on their own, or just relax on the beach. Grandma and grandpa could come too -- the home and property are relatively easy for older people to get around. Two smaller families could share the home, with the parents occupying the two smaller bedrooms privately, with all the kids in the larger bedrooms. If two families share the home, an adult from each family is expected to sign the rental agreement.

We have also occasionally hosted "friends" groups, typically groups of older ladies gathering for a few days. Spring and fall are a great time for that, with warm days on the beach and deck, and cool nights in the Sun Room. We do not accept student groups, fraternity or sorority groups and the like.
Q: Do you host special events iike weddings and large family reunions?
A: The large property and beach are great places to hold special events. But our standard Rental Agreement limits your group to no more than 16 persons on the property at any one time. This is for two reasons. One, large groups are obviously more difficult to manage and expensive to host, and two, our insurance does not provide coverage for "special events." That said, we've provided various levels of assistance for events accommodating upwards of 200 people. Please let us know your plans and let's see what we can help you put together. Obviously such events, large or small, must be planned well in advance, preferably the year before it is to take place. And such events generally require additional liability insurance.
