About the area

Islamorada It takes confidence to call yourself the "Sportfishing Capital of the World". But with two oceans full of the world's most sought-after gamefish - tuna, marlin, and dolphin in the Atlantic - and bonefish, tarpon and permit in the backcountry bay waters, Islamorada can back it up. Islamorada is Spanish for "Purple Isles" - chosen by the Spanish sailors who saw the purple hue of the coastline from either the lavender shells of sea snails or from the colorful purple bougainvillea that is so abundant everywhere. The color of the ocean here is an amazing array of blues and greens that will take your breath away. The best attraction, however, is the sunsets - with virtually no pollution or high rises to obstruct the view, the sunsets on Islamorada are a spectacular sight not to be missed. Islamorada offers fun for the whole family with visits to Theater of the Sea for a dolphin show or to Holiday Isle Resort to watch the fisherman come in with their catches at the end of the day. Visit a local artisan village at the Rain Barrel or shop for treasures at Treasure Village on Plantation Key. Long Key State Park harkens back to the Keys of old - grab your fishing pole and take a hike along the boardwalk or into the natural hammock. Experience historical Indian Key by kayak or feed the tarpon at Robbie's in Lower Matecumbe - you'll soon realize why people get the "Keys Disease" and never want to leave!
