Description of the John's Folly vacation cottage rental
Tradewinds Cottage: Stunning Ocean Views from Every Room! 1 or 2 BR

Tradewinds is a quiet, peaceful, private two bedroom cottage perched above John's Folly Bay in the scenic, quiet southeastern corner of St. John. In contrast to many cottages in St. John, we are easily accessible from a paved - yes paved - road. No scary gravelly mountain inclines to traverse to get to Tradewinds! Available as either a one or two bedroom bungalow, Tradewinds can accommodate 2 - 4 guests. If it's just two of you, the downstairs bedroom is locked and unoccupied for the week. If you'd like more room, the downstairs bedroom and bath can be made available to accommodate a total of 4 guests for an additional $400 per week.

A 40 minute drive from Cruz Bay (your ferry arrival point), we are just a one minute drive to Salt Pond Beach and five minutes past Coral Bay. Tradewinds features beautiful sunsets from the large deck and the gentle melody of waves on the beach below.

This charming wooden cottage features light, airy rooms with stunning ocean views throughout. The deck commands a panoramic view of the British Virgin Islands, and a southeastern exposure offers breathtaking sunrises - if you're up that early! Steady tradewinds keep the house cool on hot days and ensure bug-free evenings.

Tradewinds can be rented as either a one-bedroom or two-bedroom unit. Renting as a 1BR grants access to the upper level featuring a kitchen/living room/eating area, bedroom, and bathroom. For more space, rent Tradewinds as a 2BR cottage (an additional $300 per week) granting you access to both the upper and lower levels - one bedroom and bathroom on each level. The lower level, accessed by an enclosed outside stairway, features a beautiful bedroom with a private balcony and a bathroom with ocean views. This configuration is designed for maximum privacy between two bedrooms - each with its own private bath. This set-up is NOT good for small children, as bedrooms are far apart and access between levels is via a covered outside stairway. The choice is yours, one bedroom or two! If you reserve only the upstairs bedroom the second bedroom is vacant and locked.

There are a few other houses on our hillside, ensuring complete privacy in our cottage, with a few houses nearby in case one wanted to wave hello to our neighbors.

Area Information
This is the quietest part of the island, surrounded by national park, and only five minutes to Coral Bay restaurants and bars and shops! You can also walk to either a fun bar (The Tourist Trap!) or a gourmet restaurant at Estate Concordia. We are a one-minute drive to Salt Pond Bay, and 5 minutes to Lameshur Beach, Kiddle Bay, and other uncrowded South Shore Beaches. This is the hot and dry side of the island, so NOT a good habitat for mosquitoes! :-)

Doug and I bought this hurricane- damaged cottage in 1999. We resurrected the place together with our own hands, with help from some great friends. We are a GREAT team... he can design or build just about anything, and I'm a good assistant, with my own tool belt! I'm also a master gardener, and...

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How noisy is it at this cottage? construction? road noise?
A: Quietest part of the island! All you will here are the wind, waves on the beach below, and tree frogs at night.
Q: Are there other buildings on the property? Like another house right next to us, or other guests in the building?
A: Nope. You have the whole house to yourselves.
Q: Can we walk to the beach? or restaurants?
A: Beach no, but it is a 1 minute drive to Salt Pond Beach. But yes you can walk up to the famous Tourist Trap restaurant at the top of the hill, and walk to Concordia Eco-Resort, which includes yoga classes, a fabulous cafe, and small grocery store.
Q: How far to Cruz Bay? to beaches?
A: 35 minutes to Cruz Bay. One minute to Salt Pond beach, 5 mins to Lameshur Beach and other southern-facing beaches. 5 minutes to Coral Bay. 20-25 minutes to all of the gorgeous north shore beaches.
Q: What is this area of St. John like?
A: This is the quiet, dry, peaceful corner of the island. Stunning turquoise water, cactus, iguanas, deer (!). Fabulous views. Few cool restaurants and bars nearby. Hot, sunny, uncrowded beaches.
Q: Do I need a car? How is the road to the cottage?
A: Absolutely yes a car to see all of the island. Roads are steep, and slippery when wet. And to get to some of the more beautiful beaches, you'll need 4WD. The road to our house is one of the easiest on the island - mostly flat, and just a few hundred yards from Route 107.
