About the area

Cottage by the Sea sits directly on a high bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with a bold rocky shore below the front yard. The site offers a 180-degree panorama of breathtaking ocean views. Nearby Places Of Interest Within walking distance: Bar Island - Looking out the front window, there is an island just to the left called Bar Island. At low tide (and for about 2 hours each side of low tide), you can walk out to the island and find periwinkles, clams, mussels, etc. Eagles often frequent the island and land on the treetops to eat their catch. You can watch them with the telescope or the binoculars provided by the cottage. The telescope is also great for spotting seals sunning on Ballast Island further out (look for "shiny rocks" that move). Sandy River Beach - Just a quarter of a mile north of the cottage near the shore side of Bar Island is a lovely white sand beach - nice for taking a swim, a walk or for beach-combing. If you choose to drive, there is free parking across the road from the Beach. A short drive : Jonesport - An authentic working "Down East" fishing community, with a picturesque harbor full of lobster boats. Go to the local Fisherman's Coop to buy fresh lobster directly from the fishermen on the dock, or drive over the short bridge to Beals Island, where you can have a tasty lunch at Bay View Take-Out. Also on Beals Island are the Wass Island Nature Conservancy Trails. You can get groceries at Manaford's in Jonesport, or any of several small convenience stores around town (some of these also sell gas). Machias - The closest large town, it is only 20 minutes from the cottage. Machias has a well-stocked supermarket (Hanafords), with a pharmacy nearby. There are also several excellent restaurants in Machias, including Helen's (recommended),the Riverside Inn and Restaurant, and the Bluebird Ranch Restaurant. For a high-end dining experience, the Chandler River Lodge can be found on the road between Jonesport and Machias. (NOTE: call ahead for restaurant's schedules... some are only open seasonally). There are also several smaller eateries in and around Machias (even a McDonalds). In case of emergency, Down East Hospital in Machias provides excellent health care for the region. There is also a laundromat in Machias, and a well-stocked wine store next door to it. Bad Little Falls Park, Machias - Falls are on one of the last great Atlantic Salmon rivers in the East. Jasper Beach, Machiasport - Walk on the beach where pebbles are abundant with jasper, after which the beach is named. Roque Bluffs State Park and Beach - Mile long sandy beach. Ocean & fresh water swimming; restrooms. Take Hwy 187 to Hwy 1. Drive north through Jonesboro and take a right when you see the sign to Roque Bluffs State Park. Indian Pictographs, Machiasport - Boat excursion to view ancient rock carvings made by early local indians dating back 3,000 years; Blueberry Barrens, Columbia Falls, Centerville - 12,000 acres of wild blueberry land. Blossoms in June and harvest (raking) in August (also in Cherryfield and Harrington). For many other nearby places of interest, please check out the Guest Notebook provided in the Cottage.

I just returned from a wonder week at your cottage. The weather was wonderful, I took lots of long walks with my dog to the beach, and enjoyed a very relaxing and tranquil week, just what I was hoping for! The listing description was very accurate and the cottage was clean and had everything I could have needed-thank you! I found the space to be cozy and just right for myself and my small dog. I so enjoyed sleeping in the "Loon Bedroom" and being able to see the stars light up the sky at night, the moon shining on the water at night and waking to the beautiful sunrises. I would certainly recommend this cottage for anyone looking for a relaxing, peaceful location without a lot of "frills", but close enough to great seafood and outfitted with cable and internet if you need to occasionally stay "connected” to the rest of the world. I hope to plan for another visit next year. Thank you for letting me stay at your cottage!

The description of the property is very accurate. The best part is the view. We enjoyed the view every morning with coffee. The upgrades are more than expected. The owner was always available and very accommodating. The location of the cottage is such that it is very serene and quiet. We loved cooking our own lobsters after we purchased them right in the fishing village of Jonesport. We explored the small island within walking distance of the cottage during low tide, and listening to the waves at night was very peaceful. Our all day excursions included the Acadia National Park and St. John, Canada. We also dined in Lubec, and on Beals Island which has the best lobster roll on the East coast, as they serve each order with an entire lobster claw on top of already filled roll. Jonesport is not a loud touristy city, and we enjoyed that very much. The local residents are very helpful and friendly. We would love to have the view that we had from the huge window and deck of the cottage on all of our vacations, as it truly is one in a million.

We (2+2) spent a wonderful week in the Cottage by the Sea. The location is great, it has all the amenities one can wish for, and the owners could not be more helpful. We will definitely come back!

Thanks for processing the refund check. Yes, we reluctantly came home from Jonesport, ME. We so enjoyed our stay in your little piece of heaven! I loved the little pansies that greeted us. It was hard to leave the comfortable chairs looking out at the magnificent view, but we did do some things of interest thanks to the information in your loose leaf book. We made it to the lighthouse, the Jasper Beach, the FDR "cottage", twice to the Blueberry pie place and Machais & a side trip to the eastern part of Bar Harbour so special to see. We got quite familiar with both sides of route 187. The cottage was filed with everything we needed for the two of us . We were happy to see the lawn mowed on Wednesday, the guy had done all four lots at the same time. The Jonesport village was quite interesting that we thought was a rare opportunity to see a "working village" without hardly any outside influences. Of course we loved the lobster rolls @ Bay View take out. I hope you get to enjoy some of Maine this year . The Cottage by the Sea will be on our list for another year. Regards, Dorothy

The three most important factors in real estate or in this case vacation rental. We split our vacation between a few days in the hustle and bustle of Ogunquit (spending too much eating out and shopping) then moved to Jonesport for relaxation. And relax we did. We went shopping for groceries when we arrived on Saturday. We didn't use the car again until Friday. Inside or out you have an amazing view. Reading and watching the changing tides and passing boats was a daily activity. Walks to Sandy River Beach and out to Bar Island at low tide were for those more active days. The cottage is clean and compact. The large deck(where I spent the majority of the week) is great. The bed is comfortable. The bedroom facing the ocean has a great window for star gazing from bed at night (the sky is so dark you see more stars than you can imagine) and seeing the ocean the moment you wake up which is early due to the earliest sunrises in the country. The window doesn't have a shade, but then you wouldn't be watching stars as you fall asleep. You have no need to bring spices etc. for the kitchen. It is very well stocked. It could use more tall glasses, but otherwise it had everything you'd want. There are plenty of towels and with a washer and dryer we didn't need to arrive home with a pile of dirty laundry. The owner was quick in response to our booking and any questions and even called on the day we arrived to assure everything was OK. We'll be keeping this cottage in mind for when we need another relaxing escape.
