“Coconut Cottage at La'aloa "Magic Sands" Beach”

Reviewed 18 Jan 2017

What a great place to live while in paradise. Very cute place maybe 50 yards to the beach and the waves. Tom and Gidget have the home really stocked up. Upgraded kitchen with a dishwasher and lots of counter space. Plenty of pillows blankets and towels with a washer and dryer. All kinds of beach gear boogie boards, fins, as well as mask's and snorkels if you like to check out Kahalu'u Beach park just down Ali'i Dr. in Keahou. There is a great gas BBQ there that we used almost every night. Go down to the beach and witness the awesome sunsets then come back home and watch the stars brighten up the sky. While we we're there Venus was due west, with Mars above it, and the Moon followed the path of the Sun each evening. We sat out on the Lanai and talked until we went to bed. Got up in the morning before breakfast for a swim and maybe ride a few waves. This is a wonderful place to spend some time. Nice people walking by waving and smiling. Shopping and farmers Markets near by. And the girls loved the shopping! Okay I did too some. Oh, I wish we were still there. Check out the Coconut Cottage before Your next trip. Take my words for it, it is worth it and You'll be glad You did. I was born on Oahu, this was our 7th trip the Big Island of Hawai'i and this is where we're gonna stay next time too. A hui hou

“Great rental! Bigger than it looks.”

Reviewed 30 Mar 2016

2 families of 4 stayed in this great little cottage. The pictures do not do it justice as far as size of rental. It is has a lot more room than appears in the pictures. For us it had just the right amount of "nice enough" and "not too nice for the kids". We really enjoyed our stay. The place was very nicely stocked in all regards. You might not need to bring any snorkeling gear, water shoes, beach toys, water toys, and about 7 boogie boards. They even had 2 umbrella strollers for the little ones. Very close(across the street) to Magic Sands beach. There is no sand on the beach in the winter and the surf is too large without flippers. About 3 minutes south to the best snorkeling beach ever and about 40 min- 1 hour north to the best swimming beaches. The neighborhood was very calm and not noisey at all. Keep in mind there is no glass in the windows, only screen and storm shutters. Keeps the house nice and cool and you can hear the surf crashing. We loved this place!

“An Authenic Hawaiian Feel”

Reviewed 7 Feb 2015

Loved all the screened windows in the dining room, living room, and bedroom. It really brought the outdoors in, and emphasized that Kona's weather is great all year round ! The house was REALLY large and well appointed with whatever you might need. We felt like we were LIVING in Hawaii, rather than being closed in a small condo for tourists. A lot of beach equipment was available for our use also. The only drawback to our stay (which was not the properties fault) was that Mother Nature didn't cooperate and choose this time to take out most of the sand at White (aka Magic/Disappearing) Sands, then send large swells that closed most beaches on the island for much of our stay, which was disappointing. The house was a very short walking distance to White Sands Beach, and would have been very convenient if we could have swam and boogie boarded there. After reading at the beach, we WERE able to use the outdoor shower at the house to stay cool and rinse off sand. Tom was great to work with, and we hope to stay at the Coconut Beach Cottage again!

Owner's reply: Thanks Diane, were happy you loved our cottage at the beach. January is our BIG WAVE month of the year. It is not unusual in Hawaii to have a beach closed for one day out of 7 due to 10 to 20 foot waves. There were more storms than usual during January and February 2015. The boogie boarders, surfers, and wave riders LOVE it ...and ALL visitors are spell bound by the HUGE waves & with many Whales in prime jumping season, = a wild nature show to view.

The cottage is in a very nice location in Kona, and close to a couple of beaches. It is well stocked with supplies though the cooking pans could be a bit nicer. Also, the place needs some TLC, it was clean but a bunch of stuff needs maintenance. A good place to take kids, overall a nice experience and I would rent a home/cottage from Kona Fun Travel again.

Owner's reply: Tina and her family loved being just 50 yards over to the beach park. Were always glad to receive a " job list" as Tina helped us with : pocket door adjust, a stove top burner coil replaced as well as a new floor fan purchased. ALSO NEW PANS for Tina's trip back next summer . We always check with guest to find out - what we can do -to keep the place nice for the next guest. Tell Mason - those awesome boogie board waves will be here again next summer.

“Lovely cottage and perfect location”

Reviewed 30 Sep 2012

We had a lovely stay this last week of September. The provided amenities were great, including the swim toys, beach towels and coolers. Nice proximity to Magic Sands, Kahalu'u, and easy on/off to Mamalahoa Hwy nearby. Our two adolescent sons had a great time. The gecko guests were a big hit, too.

Owner's reply: Our guests are amazed at the short walk to the beach park, about the width of a soccer field. Many locals prefer having a Gecko inside, as they will patrol the home for insects - they are a great " green bug deterrent " - no poisons- spray or air smell. If the kids leave the door open, a garden gecko may come in to check out your menu. They have no teeth, and are kid friendly and harmless to play with. Visitors that don't want their company, just toss a hand towel or shirt over them and release them back into the gardens.

“Must be BEST HOUSE in Kona!”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2011

Fantastic! Airy, clean, roomy and comfortable. Well-stocked for fun and self-catering. Super close to beach but in a quiet neighborhood away from traffic noise. The kids loved the boogie boarding and the cute little gecko who lives above the fridge! We loved the convenient location to great snorkeling and all points on the Kona side. Also, the many song-birds and lovely landscaping all around the house. Cool lanai with fans. Will definitely come again someday and recommend to friends. Mahalo!

This rental was perfect for our group. With an 18 month old child, we were able to have the privacy we wanted and room for her to play without worrying about traffic or a pool area. We had a great two weeks and would recommend this rental as a great place to stay.

“Fantastic family accommodation”

Our family stayed at Coconut Cottage for the Kona Ironman and found the cottage to be perfect for our stay. Lots of space, 'water toys' and swimming with turtles at Magic Sands beach. Rekindled memories of beach side holidays of our youth.

We loved both the Coconut Cottage and the Whitesands Beach Home. I have never stayed at a place so well stocked, you guys really thought of everything! ... I hope to be back again soon! Have a wonderful winter. - Moira Horan; Spring Lake, New Jersey, Oct. 2007

Thank you for sure an excellent stay. I would recommend your place to any and everyone I meet. We were extremely pleased with the accommodations and all that it offered... we had a great time. Thank you... Jan - Janice McKenna, Yellowknife, NT, Mar. 2008

The Coconut Cottage was lovely. I loved that we could so easily walk to the beach. Everything in the cottage was very comfortable. The beds and pillows were perfect. We had enough towels, toys, and beach equipment. We would gladly stay there again whenever we plan our next trip. Also, we enjoyed the fact that our relatives were staying just across the street as well as just down the street from us in [one of] your other vacation rentals. It was very convenient for us when we were working on my sisters wedding. -- Kassandra & Ron Clark, Kihei HI Aug. 2008

Thanks for the wonderfully clean and spacious accommodations. Upon arrival, we were delighted to find all the little extras available to us: the beach towels, coolers, boogie boards, brochures, even the mug of pens and bits of paper by the phone -- all these things made our vacation that much easier to enjoy! Thanks again for accommodating us when we decided to stay another week. Dealing with you was a completely stress-free experience. Everything was so EASY and we will definitely be back! All that searching on the internet paid off. :) -- Julie, Mike, and Jake Blairmore, Alberta, Canada April 2009

We had a great time and the rates were great. Beds were comfy and kitchen well stocked. Could not have asked for more extra except to be right on the water. It was a great location however and I am sure a water view would be lots more $$$$$. Thanks so much for a great time. Mills Barrett, Bodega Bay, CA April 2010

The per night rate was way better than booking hotel rooms. Supplies were spot on, we never lacked for anything. We've stayed in many vacation rentals and this is by far the best stocked we've ever experienced. Response was quick as in when we reported the coffeemaker wasn't working, another one was delivered before the end of the day! Things such as this make us definitely want to return. We really, really enjoyed our stay, and will be recommending Coconut Cottage to all our friends and will be sure to return. Mahalo! - Masu, Oceanside CA, June 2011
