“Fun, beautiful and great location!”

Reviewed 9 Feb 2017

This was my 4th reservations with Rita at Kona Islander Inn. There was a little rearranging so my boyfriend (his first stay) and I ended up staying in another condo than previously thought which was pleasant but not Rita's room. It all worked out ( I mean it is Hawaii!) and I plan to stay with Rita again soon! My boyfriend enjoyed many of the same things I always do such as the beautiful plants and relaxing walk ways. The geckos are everywhere, which I just adore! We loved being able to just walk to town for dinner which means no dishes. All that never gets old! The lady at the front desk was very accommodating and nice. Some times of the year parking can fill up fast, but we didn't have issues this stay. I love the banana trees and all the flowers. It's like a vacation in a vacation and it's all right in town! All the rooms at Kona Islander Inn are different so I recommend asking questions if your curious.

“Prefect location, can't beat the price!”

This condo in located in downtown Kona, an easy walk to anywhere in the downtown area. The location really is perfect. Rita is a great owner to rent from. She has a great guide to the island that she can send you and really knows the ins and outs of the big island. The condo has a mini fridge and a refrigerator which was nice to keep beer and left over food in. There was no hot plate or stove top in the condo, but there is a BBQ next to the pool that is community use. The only two downsides that I have about the condo is that there is very little parking, something like 50 spots for 150 units. The second thing is that each condo is owned individually. So although Rita takes care of her unit, there are other units that may not be very well looked after. At no point did my wife or I feel unsafe, but the conditions of the other units may reflect the low ratings on trip advisor for other units. Unit 329 was good. Keep in mind that this isn't a resort, there is no daily cleaning or anything like that. The staff was helpful, but didn't go out of their way to look after you. We wild stay there again in a heartbeat.

“Not the Hilton”

Reviewed 20 Feb 2016

Kona Islander Inn As so frequently heard from the front desk staff saying to guests ?This is not the Hilton?, which it certainly is not. The Kona Islander Inn is a 60s vintage hotel which has been renovated and converted to a mixture of condos and time shares. Each rental condo unit is individually owned and operated, and you are at the mercy of the owner's standards in how that unit is furnished and maintained. Some appear to be kept to a much higher standards than others. That said, the pool area and common grounds are very well maintained. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, and the complex is located in an excellent location on Ali? Drive across from the ocean and close to most of what Kona town has to offer with numerous shops, restaurants and bars in easy walking distance. This is important because although most units advertise kitchenettes, ours consisted of a mini bar fridge, small microwave, toaster and electric frying pan. OK for making breakfast, lunch and keeping a few cold beverages on hand, but not practical for doing any real cooking. There is a public barbeque in the pool area, and another on a second floor terrace. Our particular unit 319, was small but comfortably furnished and air conditioned with a nice location overlooking the pool and backing on to a church parking lot. It is clean, quiet and offers partial sunset view from the lanai. We never saw any cockroaches or centipedes during our 2 week stay. As mentioned, the kitchenette/bath area is small and could use some renovations, but is adequate if cooking beyond the very basics is not a requirement. WIFI is not available but there is a cat 5 cable if you have a laptop. Best not to put too much faith in the lobby WIFI as is very slow and unreliable. Those looking for resort style comforts and amenities should look elsewhere, but if you are looking for a reasonably priced well situated complex, the Kona Islander Inn might be just the place.

“Good for a night near the airport”

Reviewed 5 Feb 2016

We stayed after arriving from a late flight. The location was excellent and this condo was one of the more affordable places to stay in this area. Before our trip, Rita sent us an helpful info package/ orientation guide on places to visit on the big island. The pool was closed for maintenance, so we weren't able to use it. We were switched to a different room than was on our confirmation, so there was initially some confusion at the front desk. There wasn't any bedding provided for the hide a bed but it was warm enough that our son didn't seem to notice that there weren't any sheets or blankets for him to use (easy to please 3 year old). Rita had provided a number to get in touch with her but it was after midnight, so we didn't want to call (also, or son really didn't notice the missing bedding at all). The place was clean, well used, but clean. The place is on the small end if you plan on eating in sometimes. We would definitely stay again for a night but if we were planning a longer stay in the area, might look elsewhere.

“Quiet and Clean”

Dear Rita, Loved loved loved our stay. Apartment was very clean and comfortable. Had everything you needed in the kitchen for cooking small meals. Property is great with a BBQ and free wifi in lobby. My only suggestion is beach towels for renters and maybe personal wifi in unit. Loved our stay and Rita was the best host and gave us south information for the island. Thanks again Rita.

“was skeptical... However...”

We just returned yesterday from a weeks stay and I will say that Rita's condo (329) is better than any other...I saw 2 others!! It is in the best location, you can walk anywhere, spotless, lanai, tiled floor, view of pool, grounds were gorgeous. We have stayed all over Mexico, carib..etc and I was very skeptical. You cannot beat this one. Small, cute, quaint and we had a blast!!!Would recommend this place to ANY couple I know. It's not the Taj Majal but you ARE in paradise and what can you get for less than $ 100 per night on the mainland? I say do it!

“Perfect Location”

A great holiday and perfect surroundings with everything in Kona within a short walk. Disappointed that there was no stove or grill as advertised.

Hi Rita,
We just got home from the Big Island. We had a wonderful time and the last place we stayed was your place.Your place worked well for us, thanks for the tip about the basketball court. We especially enjoyed the pool after we got home from a day seeing things or snorkeling.

HERE IS A RECENT REVIEW WE RECEIVED ON *****This TripAdvisor Member: Kona,Hawaii. Pleasantly Surprised" Kona Islander Inn tomlin Naperville, Illinois "We planned to go to the Kona Brewers Fest and wanted a reasonably priced place within walking distance. After hearing the terrible reviews about the Kona Seaside and the King Kam, we did some research and found this property. We booked online directly with the owner, Rita who has 5 units at this location. The studio unit was very clean, bright and cheery. We had a nice view of the pool, not oceanfront, but still OK. A small kitchenette with microwave, fridge coffee maker , dishes and silverware was provided. Very quiet at night even though there were two busy streets on both sides of the complex. This is a residential complex as well as vacation condos and everyone seems to be respectful of each other. Parking is a challenge here but there was always street parking available if we couldn't find a spot in the lot. Almost everything is within walking distance anyway and we rarely took the car out. Have heard that some of the units here are not so nice, but we were fortunate to find this one. Some of our brewing friends were staying at the King Kam paying $109/night and said it was absolutely disgusting. They were all asking for discounts on their rooms. We will definitely return to the Kona Islander Inn again. At only $89/night + tax this was definitely a worthwhile bargain." ****

Aloha Rita!
We have returned (after another interesting flight delay/diversion out of Kona, same thing happened last year!) and enjoyed Thanksgiving with our local family, but figured it was time to check in with you about our stay at the Kona Islander. We enjoyed it, your condo and the location very much, it "fit us" just fine.
We would not hesitate to recommend staying there to anyone in the future. We are glad we discovered you and "it".

Hi Rita,
I just wanted to say thanks! We had a lot of fun on the Big Island and the condo was very nice. We enjoyed being so close to the beach, and even though it's pretty touristy, it was really nice to be able to walk to lots of restaurants & shops (and the Atlantis sub - awesome kamaaina discount!). we thought the room and the lanai were clean & comfortable, and it was a good deal. We also got to drive up the Kohala coast, hike in Pololu, and snorkel in S. Kona and really enjoyed ourselves. We made good use of several of your restaurant recommendations, so thanks so much for that! It's such a shame that there are hardly any restaurants on Oahu that you can even see the ocean, much less be right on it - so that was really fun for us in Kona. I will recommend your place to any of my friends who travel that way.
Aloha,
Marian

Dear Rita,
This is just to let you know that we had a great time on the Big Island, thanks in large part to our stay in your unit .We found everything as promised: clean, comfortable, well-maintained, and homey. The mattress was firm, everything worked, and it was altogether luxurious to hang out on the lanai at the beginning and
end of the day. We liked the way the unit is situated, facing the inner courtyard and the pool. We heard no traffic noise at all. We slept with the sliding door open every night. The staff was friendly and helpful. And all your advice on where to go, what to eat, and what to do was helpful too.We didn't want to leave! We look forward to returning as soon as we can.

I was in apartment 327 and it was a perfect stay in Kailua Kona. The rooms were very clean and the kitchen has everything you need, from a coffee machine to a boiler and a hot plate. The bed is also good and there were a lot of towles in the bathroom. I definitely recommend this apartment.

Hello Rita,

We couldn't be more pleased with the place. Great location and such a tasteful setting. It will be a shame to have to leave it tomorrow.
Perhaps at my next return to Big Island at the end of August/ beginning of September we could do this again.
Thanks for setting us up in such a nice unit.
