Owner Supplied Testimonials
Staying at Turtle House was a great experience. Karen and Tim are great hosts. Karen is very responsive via phone or e-mail. The house was ready when promised and was immaculate. The grounds are very well maintained and the views of the Kailu-Kona sunsets off the lania (and elsewhere on the property) were spectacular. The house has many games to play at night, books to read, as well as beach towels, water toys and boogie boards to take to the beach. No need to bring those items with you on your trip. There are two bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with two twin beds. The couch also serves as a very comfortable "bed" and there is an aerobed to use if more beds are needed. Access to the internet is provided and has great speeds for logging into work if you're crazy enough to do that on vacation which I was a couple of times for brief periods. Karen accommodated us and got the house ready when one family was leaving and we were arriving the same day. In a matter of hours the house was cleaned and set up perfectly. She also accommodated our request to leave our things on property the day we were leaving so we didn't have to have all our luggage with us the whole day as our flight was leaving late in the evening. That was quite a benefit as we had 6 people and lots of luggage for one minivan. It made our last day enjoyable. We were able to interact with Karen and Tim on most days. We found them to be very pleasant and fun to get to know. We feel as though we have some friends on Island now. We would definitely want to stay here again on future return visits to their beautiful Island. Maholo Karen and Tim.

Great hosts and fantastic guest house. House is very suitable for a family of 4 with a spacious living area and deck. The grounds are fantastic.

The hosts were really warm and all of us enjoyed talking to them. My husband even played Guitar with the hosts and we talked about so many things under the sun. They walked us through the property and it was really good experience staying with them. From the post, it was not very clear that the swimming pool is right in front of the main house on the property, so not for people who want privacy.
What Nidhi loved about your listing:
The location of the house is really good. Hosts were really really nice. Hot tub was really good. After long hikes, it was best thing. :)
What Nidhi thought you could improve about the experience:
The listing could be lil more clear. The description of the photos say it all but the listing's description could add more information that the acre property has 2 houses, one for guests and the other one for the owners. Because the main house is all glass walls and swimming pool is right in front.
Swimming pool did not have any privacy and I am ok with it, but it was not very clear from the post itself. Photos did have information but, the listing itself was kind of misleading.

Turtle House was very convenient to the Kona International Airport and Kailua- Kona. It was very well appointed and at an elevation that had good trade winds. Karen and Tim were gracious hosts who were there if we had questions but otherwise respected our privacy. The only downside to the property is its close proximity to a very loud street. If noise isn't a bother for you, this would a lovely home that is top of the line.
What Lynn loved about your listing:
Your guest home was lovely and well appointed.

From Karen's first email to our fond Alohas at the end of a wonderful stay, Karen and Tim made us feel like part of the family. The accommodations are spacious, beautifully decorated, and extremely comfortable. Their home is located on a cool hillside convenient to Kona and its many attractions. In addition to an infinity pool and hot tub, there's a panoramic view of the ocean from the recliner on the lanai. To add to the enjoyment Karen has five adorable dogs and an erudite parrot.
What Douglas loved about your listing:
The sense of family rather than revenue source.
What Douglas thought you could improve about the experience:
Keep an eye on those wineglasses.

We were undecided as to which island to visit during our 10 day stay. What was certain was that we were flying into Honolulu. We stayed in Waikiki for 4 days and had a great time touring Oahu. During our stay there we've decided to visit the Big Island and searched for a place to stay. We were looking for a house with two bedrooms, WiFi, TV and pool. We were surprised and fortunate to find this listing available during our time in Hawaii. Especially considering that these were the only days available until September (based on the calendar). It sounded to good to be true. We booked a deal on 7/5 and Karen was able to have the house ready for us by noon on 7/8 which we appreciated as we had an early flight into Kona. Karen and her cute little dogs and parrot welcomed our family to her home. She was very helpful with plenty of advise on attractions and restaurants. The landscape was beautiful and the lemons from the tree were delicious. There were plenty of game boards for the family. We were skeptic about the lack of A/C but the ceiling fans actually kept the house very comfortable especially at night. The views were spectacular. There are some great ocean views as well as some awesome views of the sunset especially from the lanais. If we had to pick on a negative, besides the little road noise, I guess it would be the beautiful over the edge pool. Just that it's located in front of the main house so not totally private. However, not a deal breaker. In retrospect we wish we would have spent more time in the Big Island at Karen's & Tim's place. Thanks for making our stay enjoyable we had a great time. Especially with the cute cuddly dogs. We highly recommend Turtle house estates but book early as not everyone is lucky as we were. Mahalo Karen & Tim!
What Ivan loved about your listing:
The house was perfect for our family. Perfect size.
My wife, In-laws and I spent a lovely week on the Big Island at Turtle House Estate. The guest house is detached from the main house and located over the garage. We found the accommodations to be spacious, clean and nicely appointed. The one thing this place has in spades is location, location, location! Convenient to everywhere in Kona. Ten minutes from the airport, three minutes to Costco, five minutes to the marina and easy access to Alii Drive. The one negative is the house is located next to a road that gets busy and loud during commute times. I assumed the paid washer/dryer listed in amenities would be coin operated not $15 per load done by our hostess. Laundry would have been convenient but it wasn't a deal breaker more of a communication issue with the listing. Our hosts Karen and Tim were lovely, warm and helpful hosts with good suggestions for activities and tips for local restaurants. I would not hesitate to recommend Turrtle House Estate to anyone considering this listing.
What Steven loved about your listing:
Thank you Karen and Tim.

Karen was very gracious in letting us into the house a couple of hours earlier than we had initially planned for! I had messed up time zones and unfortunately my husband and son both got sick on the plane over and were feeling absolutely miserable, so hanging out in town for a couple of hours until it was actually time to check in would have been terrible for them. Thank you! The property is nice and so is the house. It's quite kid friendly in that Karen has lots of toys and beach stuff for kids and kids are definitely made welcome, but we did have to put some smaller pieces of furniture and some trinkets out of the way, cause we didn't entirly trust our son to not tip them over or break them by accident. The kitchen was well equipped, and the beds were comfortable. The only thing we really missed was a washing machine and a dryer. I had assumed that there would be a coin operated, shared laundry facility on site, but if you need to do laundry, Karen has to do it for you for $15. Given the rate for the place, I feel that the use of a washer and dryer should be included in the price. Maybe we just got unlucky with sick people and the rainy weather which made everything humid and / or wet, but I find it hard to imagine not needing to do laundry for an entire week in a climate like in Hawai'i.
Response from Karen:
We always appreciate feedback, and the reason we use glass cutting boards is for health and sanitary reasons. Wooden cutting boards put people at risk for bacteria...but we have wooden cutting boards and thanks to this feedback, I will offer them for those who prefer them in the future. Also we used to include laundry at no additional charge, but with the exorbitant costs of electricity in Hawaii, we chose to lower the rates for our rental, since we find most guests don't use the washer and dryer during their stay and we felt it would be better for all to have lower rates. I did offer to do some laundry for Joke, if they wanted, as my treat, since I could see that not having laundry services seemed to distress them, and we want everyone to be totally happy at all times...but in fairness, we felt it best to make it an on demand service. Since I do the laundry, with organic detergents and fabric softener, wash and fold and deliver, $15 per large load does not even cover my costs. It seemed fair to me, but I am happy to make the rental fee higher and include laundry, if anyone prefers in the future. It was unfortunate as it is usually always sunny in HI, and these guests happened to visit during a rainy time, which was unfortunate. We do have plenty of knives, but I will definitely see about getting more, if needed. No one has ever mentioned that before. So we are always appreciative of anything that can make our guest's stay more enjoyable. :)
What Joke thought you could improve about the experience:
A wooden chopping board for the kitchen and a few good knives would have been great. The glass chopping board is really painful on the ears and probably very bad for the knives too. And then a washer and a dryer of course.

I'm happy to agree with the sentiments already expressed by previous guests: this is a great place to stay. As others have said, the location is conveniently central to the island, but don't expect a pedestrian's paradise--it's also at least a five minute drive to any of the (many) places we ended up going. That's not a drawback exactly--it's just the other side of staying in a secluded location. We spent a week here with our two kids and on most days we left the house for only a few hours, because it was so relaxing. Karen and Tim were faultless hosts; friendly, thoughtful and helpful throughout.

Jason and I booked this stay based upon all of the very positive reviews and I can certainly add to that list. This place was everything that was advertised. Spotless, quite, and perfectly located to the town of Kailua-Kona. The views were breathtaking and Karen and Tim were very gracious hosts. If you are looking for a wonderful place to stay in this region of the Big Island, look no further. It was perfect. We could not have found a more lovely place for our week in paradise. If I could give them 6 stars, I would. We will be back.

Karen and Tim were very warm and welcoming to me and my family! The house is very clean, comfortable, spacious, and has a wonderful balcony with a peaceful and beautiful view! All the amenities needed are present, including beach toys for my one year old son. Karen was extremely thoughtful, and purchased toddler-friendly toys and eating utensils and plates - when she didn't have to! The house is in a very nice centralized area - close to the town for shopping and restaurants; no more than 10 minutes to the airport! It made it worth it to rent a car, and feel like a local! There are great beaches close by, making their house a great place to stay! I plan to make a trip back to Kona, and I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed with Karen and Tim for nearly three weeks. They are such lovely, generous people. The home was amazing. Very large and really nice, with everything you need. Although it may not be designed for this: we had plenty of room for our four boys and father who joined us. The location was very good: central, but away from the bustle of the tourist areas. It is also an incredible value. It was my first time using a vacation rental site and I don't know if I'll go back to hotel vacations after this. Thanks Karen and Tim for making our vacation unforgettable.

If you are looking for a good alternative to the "elbow to elbow" experience of the resorts and condos this is a great choice. Karen and Tim where both super nice and easy going. The "Turtle House" itself was very nice: private, unique. clean and accommodating. A big plus is having two full baths....really helps when getting ready for the day's outings. The hot tub and pool are a great bonus. Little things like having a clothesline to hang your bathing suits and (provided) beach towels really help to make your stay easy and enjoyable. My wife and I where glad that we chose this property for our visit to this side of the island.

lovely property. Karen was an excellent and helpful host.

Had a great time will definitely be back . Very welcoming and loved the beautiful grounds with all the wonderful fruit trees. If you want a peaceful retreat this is the place. Thanks Karen and Tim you will be hearing from us soon.
January 2013, Cathy Woo-Dekalb
Karen and Tim are great hosts and the property is an absolute jewel. One of many highlights is waking up and picking our own oranges and lemons for morning juice. The house itself is spacious, well positioned and balcony is just hard to leave, with stunning views and even massage chair. Hosts were very communicative and helpful at all times. Overall, great experience , would definitely recommend this property, and hope to be back there myself:)

Karen: a wonderful, perfect host on a property that exceeds its description and pictures. The setting is exquisite, the grounds define the term tropical, the house is a cozy home away from home, and Karen mad certain we had everything we needed and then some. I not only offer my recommendation, but can state that my next trip to The Big Island will find me renting from Karen again.
Donn Clark, January 2013
My family had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday stay at the Karen's property on the Big Island. I am sorry I didn't have the chance to meet Karen, as she was out of town, but the couple she left in her stead were extremely warm and generous. They came by to make sure we were settled and offered many helpful suggestions of places to go. They even brought us some apple-bananas grown on the property! There are beautiful plants all around the home and the hot tub is quite relaxing. The house itself is very comfortable, as advertised. We cooked some meals at home and as five people, we had plenty of room to spread out.
Davina Semo, November 2012
This house was absolutely beautiful! It was comfortable, well stocked and furnished perfectly for a group of 4-5 people. We stayed here with our children, who loved the yard. Every morning they went outside to play in the "jungle", which is actually a gorgeously landscaped yard with tropical plants and fruit trees. We enjoyed the beautiful view from the windows and the big covered porch where we could have our kids dust off all of the sand they brought with them from the beach! The best feature of this house, however, is the location! It is close to everything, but not so close that you're in the center of the most touristy areas, so you can go down to Alii Drive and walk around, and then escape back to the quiet of a comfortable, residential neighborhood. The house is also in close proximity to all of the good beaches. While we stayed at this house we spent time on Alii Drive, and the local beaches, and took a day to explore farther afield, driving to Hawi, the Pololu Valley, and then to the visitor center on Mauna Kea. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet Karen as she was away traveling in Asia (lucky lady!). The couple, Renee and Alex, who were staying in her house, were wonderful, giving us plenty of good recommendations for restaurants and beaches, and a warm welcome!
Amy Hanks, November 2012
Highly recommend a stay here. Karen, the host, is highly knowledgeable about Big Island and the house is absolutely stunning. Hot tub was always heated, pool was nice and cold, and we played Scrabble for hours overlooking stunning sunsets.
Sam Purtil, September 2012
?Staying with Karen and Tim was a highlight of our Big Island experience; they are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the Kona-Kailua area and everywhere else, it seems. Their property is GORGEOUS, and the guest house where we stayed had 180-degree views (possibly more...it's been awhile since I've taken geometry) of the ocean, plus their citrus, starfruit, and coffee trees in the foreground. Their pool is just dreamy. Karen is willing to do laundry for you if you ask! A big plus for me as an animal person was being able to interact with their charming family of dogs--I go into pet withdrawal while I'm on vacation. Both our hosts loved on our 8-month-old son, which he really lapped up. Tons of aloha at this place all around. Don't pass up an opportunity to stay here. I know we'll be back!?
