About the area

Everything (restaurants, bars, shipping, water activities, beaches) is within walking distance from the condo. But the immediate neighborhood is residential and quiet. Most people live here all the time. The condo is right on the edge of town. In less than 5 minutes you can walk to some wonderful restaurants. We love the Royal Kona Resort, which has beautiful oceanside dining at Don the BeachComber. The Royal Kona also hosts one of the 2 major luaus in town. The other luau is at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel at the other end of town. It's about a 20 minute walk. The Kailua Pier juts out right in front of the King Kamehameha. When we are in town we walk there from the condo every morning. The water is so clear you feel like you are peering into a marine aquarium. The fish are right there. Between these two hotels are many shops and restaurants, the famous Farmer's Market (open 6 days; buy 4 papayas for $5), the public library, and churches (both historic and new) . Don't miss the old and elegant Kona Inn. It's a wonderful restaurant now with a grand history as a hotel. You'll see the vintage black and white pictures inside that show how sea planes from Oahu used to arrive there. They have a fabulous calamari sandwich. The pier is also the pick-up point for parasailing, diving, snorkeling,and the glass bottom boat (it has a fun sunset dinner cruise). Just walk there and back. Don's, Huggo's, Bongo's, the Kona Inn, Honu's, Fish Hopper, Canoe Club, Lava Java, Outback, and many many more.

Getting around

Transportation is nearby if you want to venture beyond walking distance. There is a Hono Express shuttle that goes to many key places in the area. It costs $2 per ride. There is also a public bus, Hele-On. Once a day you can go all the way around the island to Hilo. It's amazing. Of course, shorter trips in the area are a lot more frequent.
