The condo you'll be enjoying is located in a complex called Moon Bay, which is more like a resort than a condominium. There are two pools, free tennis courts, saunas, a private boat slip, and a dock for fishing and saltwater swimming, to mention just a few of the amenities.
Moon Bay has two pools, with plenty of deck for soaking up the sun. There are restaurants, right on the water within walking distance. There is also a bike and jogging path across the street.
The condo is only a short drive from Everglades National Park, and just over a mile away is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. As the home of mainland America's only living reef, Pennekamp is world-famous as an outstanding spot for scuba diving and snorkeling. Saltwater fishing in the Keys attracts people from all over the world.
The unit has two bedrooms and a bath and a half. The entire unit is air-conditioned. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. There are three televisions, CD player, DVD, and a video and music library. There is a free washer and dryer in the unit. You'll also have access to a recreation room with ping-pong, and an outdoor grill right on the waterfront.
My rates for four guests start at $895.00 There is a $200.00 security deposit on first rentals. Monthly rates start at $2,495.00. Ask me about last minute discounts.
If I am booked I will suggest the nicest condo open the day you need.
Moon Bay is such a special place -- I'm sure you'll love it. I'm happy to provide any information you need. Feel free to ask questions on the Keys or Moon Bay no matter where you decide to stay.
Best wishes for a wonderful Moon Bay vacation in the sun.
Regardless of where you stay feel free to ask me questions on Moon Bay or the Fabulous Florida Keys. I have a home made "e-mail brochure" on just about every Keys subject I will be glad to e-mail you.
Thanks for your interest in Moon Bay

Surrounded by water, dining out can be a memorable experience in the Keys. Freshly caught
fish, and shrimp, plus special treats like Florida lobster, are on almost every restaurant menu.
In addition, there are plenty of other choices to meet any appetite.
EVELYN'S Just south of the Pink Plaza (West Marine) Not much for atmosphere Good food at a reasonable price. This is one of my favorites. Reminiscence of what the Keys were. The owner, Sal, is usually on site and cooking. Friendly service. My guests get a 10% discount. If I have not included a discount card, take this page and show it to them.
KEY LARGO COFFEE HOUSE. Owned and operated by a Moon Bay owner and his family. The absolute best cup of coffee in the Upper Keys. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner in an "Old Keys Home". Sit on the wrap around porch and enjoy their garden. Wireless Internet Access. Tell Laura, or her husband Ted, that Don Schlegel sent you and you can be assured of VIP treatment. Key Largo Coffee House Weekly specials. Great Keys music that is not loud.
SUNDOWNERS. Good food, and atmosphere. Not cheap. Best seats are on the dock. Nice short walk from Moon Bay, but more fun to go by boat.. Bayside Sundowners On The Bay
A little further south on the ocean side is the FISH HOUSE. (MM 102.4) Nothing in the way
of atmosphere, but world famous for their fish dishes. Reasonably priced. Drive. The Fish House in Key Largo
SNOOK'S on the bay at MM 99.9 behind Largo Honda (Car Dealer) You can arrive by small boat. Limited depth. Outside tables on the water. Sunday brunch buffet. Not the best buffet but the setting makes it worth while. Nice place to go for a drink at sunset. Snook's Bayside Key Largo
SNAPPERS is on the ocean at MM 94.5 Medium prices. Good food. Nice place any time of
the day. I prefer lunch on a warm day. Sit on the pier next to the water.
Snapper's - Key Largo
On a nice day the HIDEOUT is a great place to have breakfast. Sit on the porch over looking
the ocean. Within walking distance from Moon Bay (A bit over a mile) From MB go south and
turn left at the first street after the Pink Plaza. Approximately MM 103.5. Continue toward the ocean until you hit the water..Not expensive. Also see the underwater hotel which is next door.
For a real hearty breakfast treat try HARRIET'S. Located Bayside at MM 95.7. If you love
grits, Harriet knows how to make them. Unless you are really, really, hungry, split one of her
omelets. . Not expensive. No view. Great Breakfast. Harriet's: Florida Keys
MRS. MAC'S KITCHEN Not at all fancy. One of my favorites. Friendly. Inexpensive. If you like very nice restaurants this is not your place. MM 99.336 Bayside
CAFE LARGO. Primarily Italian Good food. Reasonably priced. No view. MM 99.5 or try BAYSIDE GRILL directly in the rear. Good food. Great view. Reasonable priced.
BUZZARDS ROOST. Grill and Pub.
Located in the garden Cove Marina. New Keys atmosphere. Good food. 106.5 and the ocean. . Go north from Moon Bay until you come to the last chance to turn right before the road splits to Card Sound Bridge. There is a car on the ocean side with a buzzard on top of it. Turn right and take it for a few blocks until the road ends. Great hamburger. Baked and breaded onion is wonderful. Goes straight to your arteries. One is enough for the table.
More like a Bar and Grill. Not one of my favorites, but so popular with my guests I have to mention it. Way too noisy. Prices are OK for the Keys. Mile Marker 101.7 Oceanside
MOON BAY.. Buy a box of fancy crackers and your favorite cheese. Add a
bottle of wine and a candle. Sit on the screened in porch and watch the sun go down. Play one of the Island Music tapes you will find in the stereo cabinet. If you want to get closer to the water try the observation deck above the Club House or select one of the benches on the pier. A great place to be with someone special. Romantic. Not expensive.

Perfect Vacation Home - A real GEM!!!

There were 3 of us traveling together so this set up was the perfect home. We spent many hours on the lovely screened porch with a beautiful view of the water and lovely sunsets. The cleanliness of the home along with the fact that everything was so organized. The kitchen was so well equipped, with everything you would need to entertain. It was great having the washer and dryer in the condo, that was also a very nice convenience. The owners were so easy to deal with and communicated everything upfront so that we knew exactly what to do upon arrival. Honestly, we can't wait to return as this has been a great vacation in a great condo!!

Condo was older but in good condition. The building was still being repainted but was near completion when we left. Very convienient location and a competitive rate. We enjoyed our stay.

We hadf a great time fishing from the canal and staying in the gated community. Robin is great to rent from and the house has everything you need. I would recommend this place as a great rental in the lower Keys!

Our visit to Moon Bay was just great. We needed warm weather and sunshine, since the winter up north had been so nasty. Our condo was just as nice as it was described to us and the photos showed it to be. The views of the Gulf out the windows and balcony were truly breath taking 24/7. The condo offered every accommodation anyone would ever need. It was just like being at home except for the wintery weather we had left behind. We definitely would recommend Moon Bay to anyone and would like to return sometime in the future. The individual we rented the condo from was one of the sweetest individuals we have ever dealt with. She was so accommodating and truly wants to have her tenants have a great vacation. Although we are not fisherman or folks who engage in water sports we found plenty of things to do while there. We toured the Everglades a few times, when on boating tours, toured a few historic homes in Miami, visited the Zoo, drove down to Key West, visited some of the State Parks. The local eateries had excellent food especially the seafood. The fact there were not a lot of fast food places was so refreshing. Shopping in the are is limited although we were able to spend an entire day checking out the local businesses and discovered some interesting souvenirs for ourselves and family to take back home. Close to the end of our stay we went to the Pennekamp State Park which is well worth visiting its beautiful. What many may not take advantage of is the movie they show there about the Coral Reef and aquatic life. It is truly an amazing educational experience that everyone who comes to the area needs to see. It is quite long but well worth the time spent watching it.

We loved staying in the condo, we are really tired of hotels and this had the feel of home away from home. The condo had a wonderful view of the Florida Bay and the sunsets. It was so comfortable and had everything we needed. The Keys of course are fantastic and we loved the dolphins, John Pennekamp Park, Treasure of the Sea and of course fabulous restaurants. We will definitely plan to go back.

This is a very nice property on the strip of Key Largo. The condo was very clean and roomy. The complex has a very nice pool and is on the side of the Keys facing the Everglades. My only disappointment was that there wasn't a beach and no sidewalks. The people were very friendly at the condo complex and would recommend it if you don't mind not having a beach or a place to walk.
Absolutely correct about the beach. There are no World Class Beaches in the Keys. I take my grandkids to Miami Beach when they need a World Class Beach fix.
I do not understand the sidewalk comment..Directly across the street is a bike, jogging path, that goes over 100 miles to Key West. I have ridden my bike on it 100 miles. It is paved all the way.

Started our search of a place to stay in the Keys and after much searching, this place more than met our needs. Jeannie kept in close contact thru the process and made the payment transfer simple and assuring. The unit was modestly described and so many more little extras upon arrival. We have confidence of VHR and this owner, Thanks Jeannie! Will return.......

Everything was fantastic and exactly as Capt. Don stated in the advertisement. This place is so convenient to diving and other activities. There's a lot to do there including just relaxing. The place was immaculate and had a lot of amenities for the activities (not normally found in a rental unit). I can't say enough good things about my experience in renting from Capt. Don. The diving was perfect.

Our family just got home from a vacation in this condo. It was amazing. It was everything that was advertised and more. It looks just like the photos, and has everything you could need. We spent the week snorkling, and swimming and having a blast with our two 18 year old kids. I would recomend this property to anyone. The view of the water is fantastic and rooms were comfortable.

This unit is everything the owner claims and is like your "home away from home." Beautiful sunset view from the unit as well as the dock. Close to everything you need. Extremely well kept unit. The complex is also immaculate; beautiful pool area and grounds. The only complaint (minor) is road noise from the highway, and 2 full baths would have worked out better for 2 adult couples. The owner was wonderful to work with and I would highly recommend this unit.
Just a quick note to let you know we made it back to Iowa yesterday and you should be getting the gate key in the mail shortly as we mailed it from the Moon Bay mail per your instructions.
Thanks so much for the use of your place, we really enjoyed it!

Just wanted to let you know that we are very impressed with your condo. We got in late last night and were first impressed condo interior but when we woke up this morning to the wonderful views of the gulf, we knew that was the best quality of this condo! You have been a pleasure to work with and I have a feeling we will be returning to your place in the future.
The place was lovely….everything was as you said – clean, worked, organized, and beautiful….I was extremely pleased.
The entire complex was immaculately kept and very nice.
I particularly enjoyed the bar-b-que area….such lovely views of the beautiful sunsets while I charred a steak to perfection.
Everything in the unit was above expectation, and I especially appreciate all of the tips you provided about the surrounding area.
I took off one day (from all that scuba-diving…which was just fantastic) to have a leisurely drive to Key West where I spent a night enjoying a few of the local attractions down there (e.g. Ft. Jefferson and Duval Street).
I left the place as I found it (clean and tidy): additionally I placed the key at the designated place, and mailed the gate pass from the lobby area near the elevator. Additionally, I washed and folded the bed linens and started a load of towels. Unfortunately, I accidently broke one of the small cocktail glasses while washing up one night; sorry – if I had more time I would have attempted to find a replacement, but ran out of time; please deduct a commensurate amount from my deposit.
Overall, you provided for every consideration in making my stay hassle free and I really appreciate it.
I hope to return in the on-coming years, but will attempt a cooler month – being from the Seattle area with the cooler weather, makes those Florida summer days seem a little harsh (temperature wise).
Thanks once again,
If we decide to vacation in Key Largo in the future...we will be certain to contact you. I can't tell you just how much we enjoyed our stay.....my motto is to vacation in a place as nice or nicer than our home...your condo certainly fit the criteria. You are my kind of owner...very attentive and prompt with information and communication, again thank you! Michele
Dear Captain Don,
We had a fabulous vacation! Moon Bay was the perfect place for our vacation. Your communication was the best! Hope we can visit again.
We had a fantastic time Don.
The condo was beautiful and the only thing Camille and I need is clean...and your home was spotless.
We will be staying with you again .

Frequently Asked Questions
Pennekamp Park. About a mile south of Moon Bay on the other side of the road. Take the glass bottom boat or better yet, take the snorkel boat. Both go to the coral reef. Take the board walk through the mangroves. Rent a canoe.
Everglades National Park... You will pass the road to the Park in Florida City as you drive to Moon Bay. Stop at the Visitors Center and then the Gumbo Limbo Trail. Unless you are a serious naturalist you need go no farther. Combine this with a stop at the Outlet Mall.
Everglades National Park - Everglades National Park
Key West... Most guests enjoy a drive to Key West. Take the Conch Train (tram) ride in Key West. A bit expensive .($25.00) Do not miss the Sunset Celebration on Mallory Pier. I suggest you leave Moon Bay early and stop for breakfast on the way. Have lunch in Key West and have dinner on the road on the way back to Moon Bay. Key West is only two hours away, but eating at restaurants on the water is fun. The scenery to Key West is spectacular. You will travel over bridges with the Atlantic Ocean on your left and the Gulf of Mexico on your right.
I hate jet skis but to my grandkids they are the high point of the trip. You can rent one a few hundred yards south of Moon Bay. They also have parasail rides. ($39.00) You can also rent kayaks just south of Moon Bay If you think you may do this ask me to send you my brochure on "boats" and hidden trails.
Try fishing from the Moon Bay pier. You should find all the equipment
you need in the second bedroom closet. You can make up bait from stuff in
the refrigerator. Or, go to the Yellow Bait House for real bait.
Take a charter boat and fish for the "big" ones. Not cheap.
If you are only semi interested in fishing, there is a party boat
that leaves from Holiday Isle. Half day is $35.00. Ask me for a discount coupon.
Try your hand at tennis on the Moon Bay courts. There are tennis racquets
in the same closet. There may or may not be tennis balls depending on what
the previous guests did with them. You can buy balls at K-Mart. There is a basketball hoop. Bring you own ball. There is a small 12 volt air compressor in the second bedroom.
Spend a day at Ann's Beach. Around MM 72 ocean side. Take the cooler
from Moon Bay and pack a lunch. This is one of the better beaches in the
Keys. You will find ice packs in the freezer.
You may consider driving to Miami Beach and spend the day on their world class beach. Bring a picnic lunch in the Moon Bay cooler if you want to save $. Have lunch on South Beach is you want to splurge.
Rent a boat on a calm day and take a trip to ocean side through Adams Cut.
Adams Cut is a short way to the ocean and Europe. I do not suggest going to
the reef in a small boat with a family unless you are an experienced seaman. Ask for my handout on boats.
If your family can do a fifteen mile bike trip they can get within touching distance to wild alligators. Let me know if you want more information. You can also take a tram.
Everglades National Park: Biking the Shark Valley Tram Road
If you are enjoy golf, ask for my brochure on golf courses near Moon Bay.
Let me know if you need more suggestions or you have any questions. Tell me something about things your family enjoys. How old are the children?
You will find a lot more to do than you can do in a month. We have been
spending time in the Keys for over thirty years and there are still things
we haven't done.
