Description of the Laguna Beach vacation chalet rental
The VW Camper Bus is just about a foot longer than the compact VW Bug. Yet the interior is roomier than any so called "mini-van" I've seen. In the Westfalia Camper conversion it is equipped for comfortable living for up to four people. Two sleep on top in the popped canvas "tent" top (left) and two sleep in the back of the van. The main advantages of the pop top over a tent are that popping the top only takes seconds, and being high above the ground you are less likely to get wet in a downpour. It is a good idea to park with the rigid roof facing the wind in a rainstorm. "Un-popping" is equally fast. When pulling down the top open a window or door to let the air out, and press the tent cloth diagonally out in the two front corners. This keeps the cloth tight so it all ends up under the pop top instead of flapping outside when you drive around.
The rear bench seat folds into a bed with room for two people. In this configuration there is still some room for people to move around in front of the folded out bed, and access the kitchen and cabinets. Feel tired while driving at night? Just pull into a rest stop. Fold down the rear seat and take a nap. Sure beats trying to find a camping spot in the middle of the night, set up a tent in the dark and move your sleeping gear into the tent. Although when in Australia I often saw people setting up their tent right under the street light in highway rest stops, and if it was raining even under the small roof at the entrance to the restrooms! Imagine what the cops would say if you did that in the US!

Plus this bonus:
Luxury restaurant with a view! Always window table! No reservations necessary! Real budget prices on the menu! Imagine stopping by the fish market in a small seaside town, picking up some really fresh fish; then just drive to the best view available; park; boil some new crop creamer potatoes (put some dill stalks in the water) and fry the fish. Eat inside or outside while enjoying the view.

The Hankas, un-frozen Minnesotens.
IN EDDIE: Feb 6th thru Feb 11th 2006

Left Irvine & headed up PCH (Highway 1), with stops at Malibu, El Capitan, Pfeiffer/Big Sur, with stops along the way. Highlights include elephant seals near San Simeon. Several hundred on various beaches with new seals being born & mating rituals. The weather was fabulous & Eddie traveled well along the rugged coast up and down steep hills and winding roads. Visited Carmel , then the Pinnacles Nat'l Monument. Saw a total of 7 California condors there on a hike to high peaks from the west entrance. Got close enough to see # 40, 45, & 50 leg bands without binoculars! Zero mechanical problems, but lost the antenna on hwy 101 near L.A. (whoops)

We had a great winter getaway& enjoyed 70 degree weather in winter! A treat for us.

The Ruffners with sweet Jordan.
IN EDDIE: March 26 - 29-06

Headed straight to Joshua Tree National Park. First "camping" trip for our daughter Jordan, 19 months old. She did great, except not wanting to sleep our 1st nite in the bus.."Too Exciting!" Spent 3 nights at Joshua Tree Park. Perfect amount of time to see what we wanted to see . The bus did great- no problems!

"Bob, Heidi, and Maya escaped from the hardest Seatle winter in 15 years to the High Deserts of California. H&B courted in a '71 VW Microbus over 20 years ago and we fell in love all over again, but this time with the addition of Maya, who turned 7 on the 12th!
Rell treated us well from Desert Hot Springs, to Joshua Tree, and Legoand, and beyond.
Thanks for the memories!"
