Area Information
Chapala is a former fishing village that has become world renowned due to our beautiful climate, breathtaking views, lush vegetation and friendly local people. Lake Chapala is famous for its year-round "spring like weather." At a mile high, the humidity is low and the sun warms us every day. Flowers bloom all year long and birds sing constantly. Thousands of human "snow birds" arrive from colder climes every winter to enjoy the warm sun.

Chapala village is the best of Mexico, with a wonderful waterfront with a boardwalk, pier, beach, street market, wandering mariachi musicians, and restaurants. Families come to enjoy the lake on the weekends, and the village is full of life and beautiful colors everywhere you look. Ajijic, with its galleries and "gringo" neighborhoods, is only 4 miles away.

Lake Chapala is a huge English-speaking retirement area. This is not a touristy area but we have lots of inexpensive international restaurants, art galleries, cobblestone streets and pueblo charm. Lake Chapala is a huge retirement area with dozens of international restaurants, galleries, classes, clubs, and day trips including Tequila village, boating, and pyramids.

Guadalajara is 45 minutes away with artisan districts, museums, fine arts, and shopping.

For more information on the area you might want to do a search for these websites: mexico-insights online magazine, lake chapala society (expatriate association), or ojo del lago newspaper. The best book on the area is "The Insider's Guide to Mexico's Lake Chapala & Ajijic", at chapalaguide.
