Description of the Lake Orta vacation apartment rental
This beautiful 2-bedroom condo sits only 15 or so meters from the historical center of Orta San Giulio. The building itself is at least 300 years old - a former convent which was fully renovated 25 years ago. Since then, my husband and I have installed a new kitchen and bath. The apartment also features a private garden, washer/dryer, dishwasher, telephone, fireplace, DVD player, and a computer with an ADSL line - no easy feat in the mountains of Italy! :)

Though small and cozy, the apartment can sleep five: two in the master bedroom, which features a queen-size bed; two in the guest bedroom, which has a trundle bed, and one in the small, pull-out sofa in the living area.

There are two other condos in the building, both owned by quiet, local Italian families.

Area Information
A breath-takingly lovely pedestrian village, Orta is almost other-worldly in its architectural and natural beauty. The small village sits on the shores of Lake Orta, the smallest and least-known of the Italian Lakes. In its center is Isola San Giulio, which is dominated by a still-operational church and convent dating back to the middle ages. Its bells still ring out the hours over the lake. And, surrounding the lake, are the usually snow-capped Italian Alps.

Orta is only a half-hour away from Lake Maggiore, about 5 hours away from Venice, 1-1/2 hours away from Milano, 3 or so hours away from Portofino and the Matterhorn (Zermatt, Switzerland).

For someone looking for a romantic or family-oriented getaway, or anyone interested in art and natural beauty, you could hardly do better than spend time in this area. Orta does not have a glitzy social scene like Como; it is quiet and family-friendly. One can swim in the lake in summer, and hike or bike the surrounding countryside. Only 5 or so miles away is a little-known waterfall with a natural slide on a small "eco-tourist" farm. It is small, little-known treasures like this that make Orta so special. And, skiing on Mount Mottarone is only 15 minutes away.

Try Googling the Villa Crespi to see only one of the local 5-star hotels where you can enjoy a world-class meal.
