Description from owner

Listen to the call of the loons from a modern, 3 bedroom, 2 bath A-frame house located on the shores of serene, 415 acre Avery Lake near Lewiston, MI. A quiet place to appreciate nature and just relax. Area wildlife includes deer, elk, black bear, bald eagles and more. Enjoy excellent fishing for smallmouth bass, walleye, pike and panfish. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass is great in the summer and fall, and we encourage catch and release. Three kayaks, a canoe, a row boat (on which you can put your own outboard motor, up to 15hp) and a new STAND-UP PADDLE BOARD are provided. Numerous trout streams are nearby too.

Much of the lake is surrounded by Mackinaw State Forest, which provides miles of trails for snowmobiling, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, hiking and thousands of acres for hunting. About a half hour drive to the fabulous Garland Resort for golfing or cross-country skiing or less than an hour drive to Gaylord, the Golf Mecca of the Midwest.

The house is located in a very private, wooded setting, on a small island with a drivable causeway and bridge. There are three large bedrooms, each having access to outside decks. Also, there is a large deck off the living room with a great view of the sunset over the lake. The front of the house facing the lake contains large windows affording a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding hills from the living room and kitchen areas. The interior of the house is panelled in rustic knotty pine complemented by a cathedral ceiling. There is a nice lakeside deck, which provides access to a great swimming area. We want you to have a great experience here and will be happy to provide you with any information about area fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc. MAXIMUM OF SIX GUESTS DURING ANY RENTAL PERIOD, and we have had a long-standing policy of no pets, as some of our regular and repeating guests have allergies. ALSO, DURING THE SUMMER WE RENT ONLY BY THE WEEK, AND OUR WEEKS RUN FROM SUNDAYS TO THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY. THE RATE FOR THE WEEK IS $1200. WE DO RENT FOR SHORTER PERIODS IN THE SPRING AND FALL.

The rate for four or more nights is $200 per night; Two night minimum stay. The rate for two or three nights is $225 per night.

About the area

Montmorency County is probably one of the least developed counties of northern Michigan. Much of the county consists of state forest land. The area abounds in beautiful lakes and clear trout streams. Very close to Avery Lake, are small streams like Hunt Creek and Gilchrist Creek, each having gin-clear water with good populations of brown trout. Canada Creek is just north of Atlanta, and has some surprisingly good brook trout fishing. About 25 miles directly south, the Au Sable River flows through Huron National Forest and is designated a National Wild and Scenic River in this stretch. Great opportunities for floating this river exist, and you are welcome to transport our canoes and/or kayak to the river for a great day of fishing or just enjoying nature. In the northwest part of Montmorency County, the beautiful Pigeon River State Forest has abundant small lakes and some very decent trout streams as well. Try fishing on the East Branch of the Black River, or the Main Branch of the Black for wild brookies, or the Sturgeon River or the Pigeon River for brookies, rainbows and browns. All are within about a 30 to 45 minute drive from Avery Lake. For golfers, Garland Resort is probably one of the nicest courses in the area. And of course there are the many fabulous courses in the Gaylord area. Great dining is found at the Lewiston Lodge, about a 20 minute drive from Avery Lake, between the huge lakes of East Twin and West Twin. Lewiston, Michigan is located on East Twin and has a decent grocery store and additional great restaurants - like the Redwood Steak House.

“Wonderful lake experience”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2016

My first time renting anything in northern Michigan. What a stunningly beautiful surprise! Quiet and lovely lake - placid morning and evening with wonderful nature sounds , loons in the morning and evening. This lake house is truly nestled within lake and forests. A wonderful week.

“A nice place to relax and enjoy”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2016

We found our stay at Avery Lake very pleasant. The cottage had everything we need for an enjoyable stay. The lake is clear and clean without a lot of boat traffic. Fishing for smallmouth bass from the kayak using a fly rod was excellent. Caught fish every evening I went out. We liked sitting on the deck with the view of the lake and watching the wild life. Dan and his wife were very helpful and pleasant. We played golf at nearby courses and went on a canoe trip on the Ausable River. Lots to do if you take the time. We will definitely put this on our agenda to go back.

“For a second straight year”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2016

For the second straight year we rented his cabin over Memorial Day weekend to meet up with family and once again we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. There were six of us and the cabins arrangement allowed my wife and I some privacy upstairs while the "young folks" were goofing off downstairs. We took a day trip to Mackinaw City when the winds were to high for kayaking and had a campfire most every night to close out the day. If you are looking for a place to just unwind and spend some time relaxing on a beautiful northern lake you should seriously consider this property.

“Awesome Fishing”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2015

What a Relaxing week, My family (My wife and I and 4 boys, 12, 14 and (2) 16 year olds)really enjoyed our stay. This fishing was the best we have ever had. We would fish in the morning, have lunch then swim, snorkel, kayak or just relax then enjoy dinner, fish in the evening, repeat the next day. The lake was the perfect size to let the boys go exploring on there own and not need to worry about jet ski's or people tubing. The house had all the amenities we needed. It was exactly as advertised. The boys were mesmerized by the loons and would mimic there calls and the loons would call back it was great to see them interact with nature instead of an Iphone.

“Peaceful retreat”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2015

We very much enjoyed our stay in the Lakefront House. It had all the needed amenities and the view of the lake is fantastic. It has a very natural setting so it was great for nature viewing. I expecially like the bird life on and around the lake. It was great fun to see our Ohio winter time birds in their summer nesting areas. It was a very relaxing vacation in an absolutely beautiful part of Michigan.

Had a great stay. Stayed for a week The home was very clean and well organized. Very peaceful environment-with trails for ridding your ORV nearby. Internet service was limited so if your business requires you to get on line while your gone you"ll have to drive a short distance to town. Otherwise strongly recommend.

“Spacious house in private setting!”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2014

Spacious three bedroom house with a nice view of the lake, yet still plenty of privacy. Only a couple of neighbors, who we only saw once. Very peaceful setting, and the house had lots of windows and deck space to enjoy what nature had to offer. You get a three bedroom house in a very nice setting for the price of many motel rooms!

“Great Last Minute Stay”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2014

Our planned "last minute" trip to Atlanta, MI to ride ATV's took a wrong turn when we found out the Elk Fest was the same weekend and all the motels were sold out with long waiting lists. I had never thought of renting a cabin on Avery Lake, but thank God for Dan and Cheryl and their great home availability. When we finally arrived, we were pleasantly surprised with the house. We only used 1 of the bedrooms since there were only me and my husband. The house was well taken care of and had everything we needed. Although we were only there for morning and evening, since we were out riding most of the day and with relatives who live in Atlanta, we felt like we were home. No neighbors were there, quiet and tranquil, lots of chipmunks and squirrels excited that we were there and even came and set by our feet while we were eating looking for a hand-out. We didn't get to fish or take the boat out, but hopefully the opportunity will arise maybe next year. We definitely want to re-visit in the future. Thanks again for a great place to call home when we are away from home in Indiana.

“Cabin in the woods”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2014

Our stay was pleasant. The fishing wasn't very good when we were there but the lake is very nice. Unfortunately we had bad weather and it rained 3 out of the 5 days we were there but we still managed to find things to do. The cabin is well furnished and supplied with stables and a wide screen TV and is clean.

“Relaxing, Resting, and Recovering”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2014

We always rent a house on a lake or ocean yearly for a week and we usually stay at different places to experience. We rented this place months ago and honestly when the time came to go, I didn't even want to leave my home; never mind vacation. I fell very ill 2 months before the trip, found out my eldest child could not come due to mandatory football practices, and experienced 3 deaths in my family, including my brother, just a month prior to our arrival. Needless to say, I was not in any mood to vacation. When we arrived the lake was so beautiful and the amenities were perfect. My younger children (11-girl, 6-boy) loved having the opportunity to kayak, go out on the boat almost daily, and Cheryl was even sweet enough to show Shelby how to paddleboard. The water is so shallow by the dock that I wasn't having extreme anxiety every time he went near the water (even though I made him wear his life jacket and he was not happy with me). My husband and the children experienced all of it, while I chose to reflect and recover physically and mentally. It was easy to do here. The lake itself is so serene and peaceful, you can see God's love shine through it and into it. Dan and Cheryl were very accommodating, and even though they were right next to us on another lot, we rarely even saw them but I am sure they heard my kids at times (not always the quietest). The house itself was well stocked with everything you may need. The seating may need a bit updating because if you are not careful the couch will hurt your bottom. It got every one of us. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of blankets, towels, etc. I did a lot of reflecting, and this was the perfect place to do that. Thank you Dan and Cheryl for sharing your cottage with us and another pat on the back to my husband who does all of the research and finds little places like this that can ease your soul and get real with your own character. As for fishing, I think my 6 year old son caught the most fish ever on the lake and my daughter caught the biggest so there is plenty of fishing too. My heart and some of my loss has healed thanks to the time we spent here.
