About the area

What makes Lake St. George so special is its secluded, yet central location in mid-coast Maine, only 20 minutes from historic Belfast, 45 mins. from Augusta to west and Camden/Rockport to east, Damariscotta to south, and only 30 mins. south to Blueberry Pie at Moody's Diner and the awesome gourmet delights Morse's Deli! The lake is rated second in Maine for water quality--our lake association pays close attention to every boat at the public launch! You'll find a few casual local hangouts for dinner or take-out...and there's always pick-up groceries, pizza or movie rentals at the corner gas station! Fine dining is as close as Lincolnville or Damar, and great shopping/art/culture in Camden/Rockport! Fun day trips include north to Acadia and Bar Harbor, or south to Freeport, Boothbay, Pemaquid Beach, Monhegan Island, etc. The ocean isn't far at all, if you can drag yourself away from the lake! And here's a tip: don't drive by Moses Sauerkraut (enroute to Moody's) without stopping...doesn't look like much from the outside, but a gourmet heaven within!

“Heaven”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2015

This must be the best place in Maine. It's location on Lake Saint George is gorgeous. It's well separated from the other houses on that stretch of the lake and, sitting on either your own terrace or on the deck by the water, it's easy to imagine you have the loons and the sunset all to yourself. The house itself has a great atmosphere; we felt at home the minute we walked in. It's roomy too, with a fully equiped kitchen, fireplace and bay windows with the same magic view. Bedrooms are large albeit somewhat cluttered with boxes and stuff from the owner. We didn't mind; if anything it added to the homely feel. Beds were excellent; nice and firm. And they were cool, which was surprising as temperatures were well up in the 80's during the day. The bathroom was real small and - as the owner says in her welcome book - a little funky. But hey, the shower is great, so.... the househas it's own little jetty and a swim raft, so swimming is great. There is a sandy patch near the jetty so you can avoid the squishy stuff on the lake's bottom. There are also two small kayaks - which are great - but if there's four of you, you'll have to take turns. The lake is too big to swim across, so you'd better get an extra vessel of some sort if you want to take full opportunity of all the islands and the rope swings (!). The water of the lake is exceptionally clear and fresh; friends tell me that's because most species of fish are kept out of the lake. But there is enough trout and bass to keep the loons and the bald eagles around. All in all Moon Loon is a magical place and we had the best holiday in years. We miss it.

Owner's reply: Thank you Stuart. Such a special pleasure to welcome you from so far. I'm so glad that you enjoyed!! Come see us again! Sandy Fuller

“Amazing stay”

This cottage was the perfect place for my family including a 4 and 2 year old. It is right on the lake with a most spectacular view; we had breakfast with a family of loons almost every morning and the sunsets were gorgeous. The cottage kitchen is completely stocked and so is the living space. There are even a collection of kids books that was great to add something new to our usuals. The lake is perfectly swimmable and the owner has put sand in the water near the dock so it wasn't icky to walk on. My whole family loved it and we can't wait to go back.

Moon Loon is the perfectly quaint and cozy get away. It was exactly what I was hoping for! The lake was beautiful and great for swimming. The location is central to so many towns and outdoor activities. Will definitely stay here whenever we head to Maine for a retreat!

Owner's reply: Sherry, Thanks and can't wait to have you back! I just knew you'd love the lake..."Colorado kids" do! Best, Sandy

“Loved it”

The main part of the house (the main floor, with the living room, kitchen, etc.) is even nicer than it appears in photos! The bedrooms and bathroom are more barebones but served our purposes just fine. The view is gorgeous, especially when the sun sets -- again, even better than in the photos. And there are two kayaks available for guests, which we used every day and loved. Laundry is available, too. What else? The place was spotless when we arrived. The area is very serene, but close enough to a couple of little establishments -- a gas station, a really cute restaurant -- that it's easy to grab a carton of milk or that kind of thing. And Camden is quite close, a pleasant drive away! Finally, Sandy is a terrific and responsive host.

Owner's reply: I'm so lucky to have such kind and considerate renters who appreciate the lake! Vara, thanks for taking a moment to reflect on Moon Loon and I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I might only add that Belfast is even closer than Camden and an interesting destination, too! Sandy

“Absolutely Perfect!!!!”

Moon Loon on Lake St. George is awesome. Gorgeous sunsets can be enjoyed indoors by the three big bay windows, or on the dock while you wet a line trying to catch one of your fish stories. We used the kayaks to fish or just explore the lake. The lake is one of the cleanest in Maine and perfect for swimming. The Loons will serenade you and most likely pop right up next to the kayak to take a peek. Overall just one of the best cabin experiences we have had. Recommend bringing movies in case you are stuck inside. Moon Loon has some but not a wide variety....yet. If you have a trailered boat, two boat launches are available on the other side of the lake near the State Park. If I could recommend any changes there are not many. One might be to have a TV antenna to catch news but the house has WiFi so if you have a laptop or Smartphone that will do. Also recommend maybe getting a Canoe or small row boat for those who are not able to get in and out of a kayak. Wish we could have used the fire pit to watch a sunset next a fire.

Perfect place for peace an quiet. Our days consisted of swimming in the crystal clear water, fishing and enjoying a drink as the sun went down over the water.

Owner's reply: Matthew, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and love the place as much as I do! Come back soon to schmooze with the loons! Sandy Fuller
