Description of the Little Gasparilla Island vacation cottage rental
Our beachhouse - named Coconut Hideaway for the coconut palms which surround it - is located on Little Gasparilla Island, a bridge-less barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. Reachable only by boat, the island has retained its Old Florida ambiance, without crowds, tourists or traffic.

Our Caribbean-inspired beachhouse sits on the Gulf of Mexico, on one of FL's most private barrier islands. Located just north of Ft. Myers, as part of the barrier island chain that includes Sanibel and Captiva, Little Gasparilla Island offers a rare glimpse of Florida as it used to be. Because it is a bridge-less barrier island, Little Gasparilla has no roads, no commercial establishments, no tourists and no traffic. Disney-esque crowds are just a mainland memory!

Decorated in antiques, oriental carpets and old wicker, our home is luxurious yet casual, for a perfect beach vacation. We are not in a condo community or "development" but a private home on a private island, with all the serenity, peace and privacy you would expect from a remote island. Yet we are just a 15-minute water-taxi ride away from the mainland, with golfing, shopping, many fine restaurants and entertainment options. (The water taxi runs daily during daylight hours. ) Tampa is under 2 hours north; the many cultural attractions of Sarasota are less than an hour and Ft. Myers and its international airport are just about an hour south of us.

Our home offers many unusual features you would not find in a typical "condo" rental, including a piano, small library, satellite TV and DVD, stained glass windows, relaxing hammocks, hardwood floors and soaring high ceilings, a European-style bidet... Even a smoothie maker! We also provide beach towels, beach chairs and an umbrella... Even masks and snorkels to explore underwater! We recently purchased a laptop (MAC) for the beachhouse and we now offer free internet access (but dial-up only for the time being... No high speed yet!) Unlike many beach rentals who claim they are "beach-view" or "near the beach" or "short walk to the beach" we are literally right on the beach with stunning beach views from nearly every room in the house.

Little Gasparilla Island is perfect for children with its sand pathways, no cars and no traffic.... Just miles of clean, white sand beaches, shallow and tranquil water and hundreds of shells. Fishing is great off the dock or the beach and the sunsets are spectacular. Your rental includes a dock slip if you choose to rent a boat and a cart is provided to transport bags and groceries. Nearby in Boca Grande or Placida, numerous charter boats are available for tarpon fishing, deep-sea fishing or flats fishing.... Or perhaps a shelling trip to a remote barrier island. They can even arrange a trip to Cabbage Key for lunch, home of "Cheeseburger in Paradise! " However, we find that many of our guests prefer to chill out, find a good book and relax in the balmy breezes in our hammocks!

WHY VACATION ON LITTLE GASPARILLA??? First, it is a barrier island unlike any other with unparalled peace and privacy. It offers miles of the most beautiful -- and pristine -- beach in Florida. It is safe for children, with no cars and virtually no traffic. It is pet-friendly with lots of friendly dogs and their owners on the beach. While it is just a short ride from the mainland, it is worlds away from congestion and traffic and wordly cares. The water is clear and clean, perfect for swimming, snorkeling or floating on a raft. We often swim with pods of dolphin and manatees are often spotted around the docks. It is still relatively undiscovered, meaning it's not unusual to go to the beach and not see another soul for is one of Florida's best-kept secrets!

We encourage you to discover it for yourself! Little Gasparilla Island is truly an island vacation dream! Just bring your groceries, bathing suit and a tropical attitude!
