There is a hiking trail to the top of the island with an incredible view of all the San Juan Islands and the surrounding Salish Sea.
Frank's Beach is an afternoon sun beach on the west side of the island, and is a good place to view sunsets over Vancouver Island.
Bring your dog for a walk: Franks' Beach is off-leash. You can also walk your dog off-leash on the old gravel road that leads to a wonderful beach area at Smuggler's Cove. The Curry Preserve also has a nice hiking trail in the deep woods.

Hasn't refunded my deposit

May 8, 2016

I stayed here for 3 nights with some friends and we had a very nice stay. I most likely would've been back, it is a beautiful property, but Grant has not refunded my damage deposit. It has been 2 months and I have tried contacting him, but have not gotten a response. We did NOT cause any damage to the property and we cleaned the heck out of the house before we left. I hope that this is just a fluke and he is not stealing other people's money without them noticing.

Wonderful Getaway

April 15, 2016

The owner allowed us to check in a few hours earlier, the rental is rather rustic but nice and the hot tub was amazing. My fiancé was the one who set it up and he did say it took him a while to really get it going (so that the water was hot enough for it to be therapeutic), but was able to bring my dog. I let him off leash and we enjoyed the two nights thoroughly. They have pots, pans, knives, dishes, blankets and a nice indoor fire as well. So leave your cookware at home! There's two great places to grab food from (and then a small grocery store) so you can enjoy the atmosphere more. There's a few public beaches, but seriously enjoyed the mountain view from the kitchen, playing games and just enjoying the alone time and the cabin. Would go again to Lummi Island for sure! AND, now we know where we want to stay EVERYTIME.

everything we were looking for

December 19, 2015

this cabin provided a perfect space for all of the things we came on vacation to do. neither of us, nor our dogs, are accustomed to so much space and comfort! the hot tub was even better than I had hoped for, the kitchen was outfitted to allow for almost non-stop baking and cooking to indulge in. wood stove kept the whole house warm. felt fairly quiet there, and the owner gave us good suggestions for places to go and walk with our dogs in between the almost incessant rain. very grateful that the owner worked with some of our special needs... very personable. thanks so much for sharing this special get-away with us.

Didn't actually stay...

July 22, 2015

We were looking forward to a few quiet days in this cabin but, after several cordial emails and no actual confirmation from the host, he just stopped returning my messages. He seemed to be put off when I mentioned a possibility that we would try to make a reservation at The Willows restaurant. In fact, his last message informed me he didn't think anyone who would eat there would be happy with his accommodations. It took weeks of me asking for confirmation (while other summer rentals in the area filled up) before he stopped responding. I'm still confused by the whole interaction and would not recommend his business.

Looking for awesome cabin adventure?

January 12, 2015

An adventure getting there and an adventure being there. Wood burning heater, totally cool wood-burning hot tub (!) idyllic setting with quality decor and craftsmanship. Had a great time enjoying the fire, drinking coffee and enjoying an evening glass of wine. Read a great book and simply had fun being together. It was also fun meeting Grant! May not be for everyone but if you are looking for a cabin-in-the-woods back-to-basics down time, with an elegant twist, this is your place!

Our 2nd stay was just as great as our first :)

January 9, 2015

For 5 days around New Years my partner and I stayed at Grant's lovely cabin. It was our second visit (our first being on the labour day weekend) and the second visit was just as great as the first. We arrived to the wood fired hot tub being warmed, the inside wood stove all crackling and bright and the lights on to welcome us (as we arrived just at it was getting dark). The kitchen is stocked with all the pots, pans, cutlery, and dishes you would need to make meals. There are more than enough bedding, pillows and towels. All you need to bring are your clothes, food and anything you may want to drink :) Even though the master bedroom has a great comfy bed with a beautiful wood beamed ceiling to look up at, my partner and I spent lots of lazy afternoons cuddling and napping in the great daybed (which is on the main floor) because it is set up right next to the cozy wood stove. The yard is so lovely and it's ultra private so you can spend time in the wood fire hot tub wearing nothing but your birthday suit ;) I recommend this getaway house for adults who are looking for a relaxing, restorative vacation. We are a couple but as the house would comfortably house and sleep 5 I would recommend it for a group of friends or family members as well. My partner and I will definitely be back!

Eclectic wonderland, had a great time.

January 1, 2015

We stayed at Grant's cabin before Christmas, as temperatures were falling off. He had it warm for us when we arrived and showed us around, providing instruction on the wood stove and hot tub, among other things. Everything was in order and we were able to keep the place warm enough with the wood stove. It took a little effort, but was fun and uncomplicated. Grant also did a great job of keeping in touch and making himself available if had any questions or issues. Much appreciated!

Cozy Private Cabin

November 19, 2014

We enjoyed stoking the pot belly wood stove and the complete privacy when we stayed in this Lummi Island cabin. Be prepared to dress warm on the frosty mornings while the cabin heats. Turn on the electric kitchen stove and bake up some biscuits while sipping coffee in the breakfast nook. The wood heated hot tub is as innovative as it gets!

Great Weekend of Quiet Relaxation

November 15, 2014

Firstly, the place was great- very nice hot tube, outdoor fire pit with a beautiful view, and very quiet and secluded. This was our first experience with Lummi Island. The island has some nice little beaches and the hike up to Baker Preserve is highly recommended. We came for a few days of quiet relaxation and left satisfied!

fall family getaway

November 1, 2014

We booked in Oct. when we were free and could meet up with family. The island was peaceful and charming, the property was also charming. The views from the cabin were spectacular. Everything we needed was there. We hiked to the highest point on Lummi, enjoyed the beach, saw Eagles & seals, and did some off-island travelling as well, but always a joy to come home to the cabin. We thoroughly enjoyed our getaway!!

Lovely getaway

October 3, 2014

My husband and I enjoy taking a short getaway in early fall, someplace close but new to us. We love the San Juan Islands, and had never been to Lummi, so we did a search and booked this rental. It was lovely! Grant has put a lot of time and effort into restoring the house, which has a lot of character and lovely unique touches throughout. It was quiet, peaceful and private, with a lovely view from both floors across the water to the mountains. Grant was there to meet us, show us around and answer any questions we had. He had the fire going in the house as well as the wood-heated hot tub, and had recommendations for a hike and a beach visit if we were interested. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that I personally didn't like the water! I would bring a filter pitcher to improve the taste.

Owner's reply:

Glad you had an enjoyable anniversary get away .The cabin is not well water ,the source is a community water association,
The water reservoir is filed with clean water run off from
The old growth Forrest 'making it pure . Its still treated like all water systems do
I will take your suggestion and have a filter pitcher available for guest use

Hi there, I am writing my review about renting the Eagles nest on Lummi Island. I did not rent it for myself but rather for my daughter and her new husband to enjoy. They came back full of good things to say about their visit and particularly enjoyed the abundance of wildlife and natural flora. They would like to return again next year and do more hiking about the island. Thank you for making the whole experience easy for me. Even to the phone calls with specific, time saving directions to the Island. I am confident I can call you again and arrange more getaways... Mary-Jo Redlin

Unique cabin on the hill side

August 17, 2014

First, I would like to say that the cabin was beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed the small island experience and the convenience of it being such a short drive to a city. The only problem I had was the lack of cleanliness in the kitchen and laundry room, as well as some advertised amenities that were not there.I realize this is not a 5 star resort, but I do expect a certain standard of cleanliness as Well as having the basic essentials such as hand soap in the bathrooms ( that is all I would like to say about that). The items that weren't there as advertised were a DVD player, Stereo, charcoal grill and dishwasher (was very evident it has been out of service for quite a while). On a more positive note, the owner was very easy to deal with and have us lots of information about the island and things to do during our stay. The rustic charm of the cabin was refreshing as well as waking up to beautiful views of mount baker. I would recommend this place for a "guys vacation"

Rustic Cabin

July 31, 2014

We loved the location of this rustic cabin and the master bedroom was very comfortable. However, the bed in the second bedroom was very stiff and hard. Numerous things were disappointing and led us to believe the place had not been cleaned. The place was advertised as having bathrobes which we planned to use only to find feminine hygiene products in the pocket of one of the robes, the closets were exceedingly dusty and dirty, and there was food stuck on some of the silverware. A big sign on the front of the dishwasher said broken. There were no kitchen towels to be found, and the claw foot tub had a huge red streak down the inside from dripping water. The towels were dried on a clothes line and no fabric softener had been used so they were very scratchy and hard. Very dusty throughout.

July 16, 2014

My husband and I both agree this is the best choice we have ever made for a mini vacation! And it was only a little over 35 miles from home! The view was so spectacular, the sounds of the birds was so relaxing! And the hot tub was very romantic! We were so thankful to find a place we were able to take our kids with us. Awesome island get away

July 10, 2014

My wife and I had been searching for a local retreat to take one of our last vacations of the summer before our first kiddo arrives in September. Despite our unusual booking (Saturday - Tuesday), Grant was really accommodating with our schedule. He also was there to greet us, give us a tour and let us know of some great hikes, local beaches, and cool spots around the island. We loved the house (awesome workmanship!), the unique hot tub and the beautiful views from the spacious deck. Our Dogue de Bordeaux was also very happy, exploring the dog friendly and beautifully landscaped fully-fenced yard. Thank you Grant for allowing us to stay and relax this past weekend - we would highly recommend your beautiful property to anyone looking for an island getaway!

quiet and relaxing and very dog friendly

June 18, 2014

My girlfriend and I were looking for a quiet weekend with our dogs when we came across Grants cabin on the internet. He was offering a pretty good deal so we decided to try it out. I'm sure glad we did, first and foremost our host was great!! He had both the fire pit and the tub going when we arrived and was gracious enough to walk us and our beagles around the property and through the woods....the area is beautiful an quiet with lots of birds and other wildlife. After walking us around the woods he showed us the cabin. Being a handyman, I admire all the work that has been put into this place... The cabin was clean and inviting, and offer some awesome views of the water. We especially liked the stainless steel countertops....being self proclaimed "foodies" my girlfriend and her sister whipped up some of the most amazing kalbi chicken, and we were even able to grill some rabbit on the deck.....the island itself is nice and quiet, and its people were all so nice..the beach near the church is an awesome area for beachcombing...and there really isn't anything better than stargazing from the fire pit, or the hot tub.. all in all we had a great time and will most likely be back...

Incredible Lummi Island Getaway

March 22, 2014

We stayed at Grant's cabin for three nights and it was an absolute pleasure. Grant was there to meet us the first day of our stay. He had the cabin and hot tub heated up upon our arrival. We enjoyed hearing all about the how Grant found the cabin and all the work he did on it. He also gave us some great suggestions on things to do on the island. The property has an incredible view of the water and Mt. Baker in the distance. We were content to spend most of our time in the cabin cooking (the kitchen had pretty much everything we needed), hanging out by the fire, watching movies and soaking in the hot tub. The cabin is truly a unique and wonderful place. We had a great time. Hopefully we'll back again someday.

Quiet and Peaceful

January 24, 2014

We had a wonderful peaceful time at Grants cabin. The house was warm and the hot tub was ready for our use. Grant goes the extra mile to have things warmed up and ready for you when you arrive. We live in a small town with little traffic compared to the Seattle area. Lummi Island was so quiet it made our small town seem busy. If you are looking for a place to relax, read and rest then this is the place. As someone else said this isn't a 5 star hotel it's a rustic cabin in the woods with a view of the Puget Sound and on good days a wonderful view of Mt Baker and the snow covered mountains.

Perfect place to unwind

January 9, 2014

We stayed 3 nights at this wonderful getaway. It was a perfect respite from busy city life. The island itself is quiet and quaint. Perhaps now my favorite of the San Juan's. The chalet is nestled on the top of a hill with a stunning view of the water and mountains. The cabin itself is rustic and cozy and the perfect place to let yourself unwind! Most of our time was spent in front of the fire, in the soaking tub or cooking in the kitchen. Everything was as promised and easy to find. **The Bakers Preserve Trail is a good hike with a view of the islands and there's plenty of beaches to walk along and explore. We didn't get a chance to eat at the Willows Inn, but the reviews are reason enough for us to want to visit Lummi again.

Rustic but not clean, consider bringing your own sponge and sanitizing the kitchen and utensils before cooking with them. Bring additional kitchen towels there was only one. No heat except wood stove, despite the fact that there is a gas stove present but the owner is too cheap to fill the propane tank. i guess he thinks you would like to spend your vacation time stoking the fire all night long instead of enjoying a romantic evening. The kitchen ware was like camping quality. I wont be back!

Absolutely wonderful place

September 30, 2013

This is a rustic and well appointed cabin in the hills of Lummi Island, both as charming as can be. The host had the wood fires burning: 1 in the cabin and the 2nd in the outdoor hot tub that was hot upon arrival so it couldn't have been warmer or more welcoming. He loves dogs and enjoys having a place for other dog lovers to come. I visited when the car ferry was not running so he picked me up and drove me to and from the ferry landing (the cabin is a few miles away) including a second trip to get off Island as the ferry was delayed for a storm. That just made the experience all the more adventurous and fun. He even made me breakfast Sunday a.m.! It was a very special time and I can't wait to go back! It is perfect for a retreat which I did or a romantic getaway.

Rustic charm

July 28, 2013

Pros: The amazing view of Mount Baker framed behind the tall trees, the privacy of the property with the lush evergreen trees and fences, the fresh air, the allure of a hot tub heated by a hand fashioned wood burning unit, the helpfulness of the owner, some charming antique pieces scattered around the log home. Cons: too rustic for city dwellers like myself , worn out furnishings, bed linens and towels, tired looking flooring and wall paper, spider webs, dust and general feeling of uncleanliness and sadly, mouse droppings in the upstairs bathroom, hot tub area was surrounding by firewood and debris and the water looked dirty and the hot tub requires about 4 hours of wood burning time before it gets hot and it did not stay hot for the the next day unless you keep adding wood throughout the night.

Sweet Retreat

July 2, 2013

This is your destination for peace and tranquility. It's is a wonderful place to spend some time away and leave the rest of the world behind. Grant is very friendly & easy to work with. It was so nice to have the fire lit in the yard when we arrived. The views from all over the property are amazing. And we really appreciated the artful decor both inside and out. We brought our dog and he loved it at least as much as we did. It's absolutely a big 'Yes' to recommend this sweet retreat, and we'll certainly be back!

Beautiful Retreat

May 20, 2013

We loved our two days at Lummi Island, we stayed at the cabin almost the entire time, reading enjoying the real wood fire sitting in the big rockers or listening to the birds outside in the tall evergreen trees on the large sweet patio. My hubby went in the unique hot tub, he loved it. We messed up and left all our clothes at home, but no worries, did not seem to miss them much, it was a wonderful two days. The bed upstairs was so comfy, we slept like rocks. We rented electric bikes at the Willows Inn and got a little exercise, that was fun. You need to bring your food along and cook it yourself, which is real easy in the wonderful kitchen with the big picture window looking out at the water and trees. Grant was also sweet and kind and very thoughtful. We will be back to enjoy another getaway again one day. Cheryl and Traddus Suddarth

PEACE & QUIET

May 14, 2013

My husband 66 & I 57 found such enjoyment here doing absolutely nothing......simply watching the sky for eagles.... the water for boat crossings.....the landscape for deer......stoking the pit fire & soaking tub......cooking lovely meals with an inspirational view that made being stuck in the kitchen a delight ......eating, drinking & breathing in the ocean air..... Just about everything you could need is provided, kitchen lacked a few incidentals (storage wrap, foil, roasting pan, not much else) there was even a well seasoned cast iron skillet, my favorite...... Our great dane Rommel could walk about off leash; yet slept through the deer visiting..... We watched the Rhododendrons bloom out in our 7 day stretch of beautiful unseasonably warm weather.....Gorgeous pink at the pit fire & romantic red from the master deck..... We WILL return!.... A note to help others: the stairs to the upper 2 bedrooms could pose a problem for elders, narrow, shallow stairs...... the steep terrain of the property is nicely terraced & eases you into more exercise than the Stairmaster, so allowing you to continue to eat all the proper vacation food...... laundry facilities are working & adequate but needed the wood stove to dry things thoroughly in less than 2 hrs..... if you're fussy about soaps of any kind; bring your own...... the deck is large & inviting but needed (my opinion) a comfy luxurious place to land & perhaps nap......next visit we will bring a hammock....The bed was all cotton sheets, a real plus for me with skin issues........THANK-YOU GRANT

Disappointing

April 11, 2013

When en route to the property we were notified by Grant that there was a carpenter ant infestation in the house. Since there are no real stores on the island he asked if we could pick up ant poison before we got on the ferry. Not a good first impression. When we got there, the (flying) ants were all over the kitchen. Trying to make a romantic dinner that night was nearly impossible, as the ants kept getting in the way and on our food. We didn't make any more meals for the rest of the weekend. The shower water pressure was not great. The wood-fired hot tub was a cool experience, but didn't make up for the other negatives. Overall, I think the property was overpriced for the quality and cleanliness. We made it known that we were not happy with the carpenter ant situation, but were only refunded $50. Will not be staying there again. That being said, the house is cute and the view is great. It really needs some upkeep and a complete deep cleaning, though.

Great rustic retreat

April 2, 2013

-Quiet hillside property -Nice fenced area for our 75lb dog to explore -Cozy den -Very comfortable bed -Wood fireplace and hot-tub made for a lot of fire-stoking! I smelled like smoke at the end of the weekend. Plenty of wood ready, though! -Kitchen appliances aren't the latest and greatest, but that's not what we were there for - they worked fine for us! -Responsive and friendly owner -Nice 8-mile biking loop on island's North side

Owner's reply:

Glad you enjoyed times by the real wood fires
Its a lot of work for us to get , split and stack all the firewood
We have an older gas stove with old fashioned pilot light so guests can cook if the
power goes out , which does happen here in the forrest on an island
Did you know that you cannot bake in the newer gas oven if the power is out ?
Its always nice to bake a pie , cookies and warm up the kitchen if snowed in and power is out
.

Unethical disappointment

March 9, 2013

My boyfriend and I were so excited to go away. Grant quoted us $99/night and when my partner called to book, Grant asked what the occasion was. My boyfriend told him I had a few days off from teaching and how happy we were to be able to get away. Grant said he would send us an invoice. After a few days, we still had not received an invoice so I followed up. Grant responded that he could not give us the deal of $99 if it was a school break. I was really shocked that he not only went back on his original quote to us but more so that he didn't even have the common decency to tell my partner he couldn't give us a special rate or at the very least to email after changing his mind. Very unprofessional not to mention rude and unkind. I couldn't trust someone doing business in such a manner. He would rather make $30 extra dollars than honor his word and treat people right.

Lovely Lummi Island escape

February 26, 2013

This was our second visit, and we had a lovey 4 nights on Lummi Island at this great place. It was great to relax in the hot tub, and later sit in the rocking chairs and be cozy by the wood stove. The place is great! Our dog enjoyed the fenced yard and the view from the deck - especially when the deer were walking up the road. The views of Mt Baker were glorious. The island has lovely hiking trails through the forest, and the beach by the church is public and easily accessed. The place is well set up. The kitchen is spacious and the bbq is nice. Grant is so welcoming and helpful. We want to make it an annual event.

Quiet, rustic retreat

November 27, 2012

A nice, quiet location on quaint Lummi Island with a generous amount of space. A short drive from Downtown Vancouver Canada, door-to-door in 3 hours. The owner was by a few times as he was doing some work on the place but he wasn't too intrusive. The wood-fired hot tub was a bit tricky to light but worked as advertised. November was a very cold time to go as you do not get afternoon sun, but the wood-burning fireplace heated things up nicely, as did the hot tub. Would go again during warmer time of the year.

Heavenly getaway

November 20, 2012

We came up from Portland and stayed for two days with our golden retriever. This is a lovely two-story nicely finished log cabin with a homey feel but modern conveniences including wifi. There is lots of beautiful wood detailing throughout the cabin. Full kitchen with cookware and dinnerware, three different sleeping areas (in addition to the couch), cozy couches and rocking chairs, beautiful lamps. The wood stove in the living room was plenty to heat the house while we were there. The bed in the main bedroom was comfy, there was a soaring cathedral ceiling and lots of light in the room, it had a beautiful view out over the Sound and there was lots of closet space (the clever use of cabinetry makes tremendous use of the A-frame walls upstairs). There is a huge deck with a picnic table. The wood-fired hot tub was incredible, the water was hot and ready for use when we arrived in the afternoon (thanks to Grant, who thinks of everything), though we didn't use it until the next morning and the temperature was still perfect. The firepit just inside the gate provided great ambiance next to the little pool - I wished I had brought marshmallows and skewers for roasting. There is a little mountain slope behind the property that our dog loved exploring. Just bring your toiletries, your hiking shoes, and your favorite vacation foods (though there is a small grocery store with basic selections near the ferry dock). This home away from home is an incredible value and we hope to return soon.

Perfect Romantic Getaway

September 22, 2012

My (new) wife and I visited Grant's hideaway as our honeymoon treat. Bear in mind, we had a simple wedding - a JP and witnesses, and wanted an uncomplicated getaway. We could easily have taken off to the 4 Seasons in Whistler or a Fairmont property via my employment, but wanted something more private and intimate. After viewing the photos on this site and speaking with Grant, I knew I had the right place and the right host. When he understood our occasion, he offered special extra touches, that were massively appreciated. When we arrived, Grant had the outdoor chiminea going, the hot tub, and the woodstove - very welcoming. He gave us a warm welcome, a quick orientation, and then made a friendly departure. So much kinder and more personal than anywhere else I have stayed. In the spirit of fully equipped cabins, all we had to bring were our food and beverages - everything else was there. The place has great sight-lines for privacy and views... a fantastic combination. We loved the warm wood heat, and the fun of stoking the fires, among many other charms. If you are expecting a 5-star hotel, remember that this is a privately owned and maintained property. There isn't a cleaning staff to whisk through between each guest - just the owner - so we made sure to leave the place cleaner than when we arrived, which we believe is implied in the contract of a well-maintained vacation rental at a reasonable price. It was such a good value that it only seemed fair. If you'll be offended by the odd cobweb or a bit of dust in a corner, save yourself the angst, then double (or triple) your budget. But if you'd like to enjoy a relaxing, trouble-free holiday in a clean, well-equipped yet rustic setting, you may just owe it to yourself to spend a few days here... We'll certainly be back!!!

Sorry to be the dissenting voice

September 11, 2012

When my adult daughter and I saw all of the 4- and 5-star reviews, we decided to try out the place, even though it was the most expensive weekend of the year. I agree with other reviewers that Grant is friendly and I agree that the view is lovely, but that is the end of my agreement. The driveway is difficult, especially in the dark. The house was not clean. We had to clean the refrigerator before using it and the dishes, although stacked neatly on the shelves had remnants of dried egg and other food on them, as did the flatware. We washed everything before using it, which seemed an unfortunate use of vacation time. The stove was also dirty, but I did not spend a lot of time cleaning it. The light switches, countertops, and kitchen table all seemed to have a greasy film. There was a sponge but it was so dirty, I did not use it. Grant had a lot of paper towels and while I resist using them at home, I used them instead of dish towels or the sponge. The area near the door between the kitchen and the living room smelled like gas. Of the three beds, one upstairs bed was so hard that it was not useable for an adult and the room had a film of dirt, along with cobwebs and a tattered lampshade that looked like it came from a haunted house. The other upstairs bed was closer to comfortable but smelled very strongly of laundry detergent, which should have been welcome, but was overwhelming. The third bed is a daybed in the living room, which is reasonably comfortable, but there are no window coverings, which makes it feel quite exposed and makes it very bright in the morning. Rather than continue the list of disappointments, I will explain that I booked and paid for four night, but left after two nights. We probably would not have stayed that first night if we had arrived earlier and we probably would not have stayed the second night if we could have found a place to stay. We surrendered and even though we could not find a room in any lodging, we left.

Lummi island is unique and the people on the island were so friendly. Our chalet felt more like a cabin although much hard work and love has gone into it. Hello- Please heed warning. When we found this rental we loved it.. great price, perfect setting. Talked to Grant made us feel like family.. we explained to him our big travel plans that ended with a romantic stay at his cabin. He Said we sounded like great people, two romantic travelers, and was excited to meet us. We give him a deposit and he gave us a verification number and we set off for our trip. We are getting ready to board the fairy to go across to the Island and I give him a call and he says "oh didn't you get my email. I said "No, We have been traveling, camping, kayaking, and we haven't had service. He than continues to tell us that he and his spouse talked it over and there was someone who wanted to the cabin for longer than we did and he decided he wanted he more money instead of keeping his word. I asked him if he was serious and if he knew of any place else on the island or had made any other arrangements for us. He said no and that he didn't care about a verification number and that he would refund our money. I mentioned to him that it wasn't a good business practice and he did't care. We eventually found a place to stay from some wonderful people on the island and after telling our story to a few people of the locals they mentioned to us that he was not a man of his word, did not hold good business practices, had no character and that they were not surprised at all that he did this. I understand unforeseen circumstances but this was purposeful. To take someones money and than email them that they didn't have a place to stay 2 days before they were to arrive on a REMOTE ISLAND is crappy. He didn't even give us a phone call after he knew that we didn't have wifi. Don't rent from this guy. He worthless and you may not even have a place to stay once you get there. If i could give him no stars I would.

Surrounded by Cool Forests and Warm Fires

July 7, 2012

My wife recently stayed an entire week at Grant's cabin with our two little girls (5 & 3) and we had a wonderful time. If we did nothing else, just being surrounded by one of the greenest forests have even seen- was great. We spent a week in absolutely no hurry at all. This was the perfect place to do so in midsummer (when back home it was 100 degrees plus!) Stoking fires on the patio, in the hot tub, and in the house... cooking fun meals on the grill and in the kitchen, etc. However, we also explored quite a bit of the area in that week. The girls loved playing at the church beach, the estates shoreline, the shore north of the ferry dock, the hike up to the top of Lummi Peak, and just watching the wildlife throughout the island. As it was our first time anywhere near the area, we also took day trips off-island along the cascades to check out the mountains a bit more closeup... and a trip down Chuckanut Drive to view the San Juans from that vantage point, as well as to have a meal of fresh shellfish at one of the restaurants near Taylor Shellfish Farms. Perhaps the best way to understand the experience would be to check out the photos posted via Instagram on my phone from the week at Flickr (account "nashworld"). I have hundreds of other pics from a professional camera setup that will be there in the next few weeks, but this set of 140 iPhone shapshots might give you a more visual review. Lastly, Grant was a fantastic host throughout. He met us at the cabin, gave us a tour of all of the details... and had fires on the patio and in the hot tub to greet us. Amazing atmosphere from the start. He even gave a quick courtesy phone call after a couple of days just to make sure everything was going well. This is an amazing area, a friendly host, and a property that truly integrates itself into its surroundings. We still have a lot of this planet to see, but when we get back to this area, we'll certainly cross our fingers that Grant's place isn't booked. Enjoy...

Cozy cabin nestled in the woods-very dog friendly!

July 7, 2012

My boyfriend and I recently stayed here with our dog for our 3 year anniversary and it was amazing! We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful house, inside and out. Grant and his dog Emma greeted us when we arrived and showed us the property and surrounding area which was really nice because you could get a feel for the area and get a crash course on how to work all the fireplaces! Grant has masterfully restored the house himself and each room has something unique about it, it's just amazing inside, plenty of room for about 5-7 people, or a family, or a perfect quiet get-away for 2. We brought our own food to BBQ(there's 2!) and I loved prepping food on the huge stainless steal kitchen counter that looks out into the bay. Inside was great for rainy days, but the beauty of this place is the outside. There isn't a bad view from the property and the big deck is great for relaxing in the sun and looking out at the mountains and ocean. The wood fired soaking tub was perfect for relaxing in the day or watching the stars at night. There's lots of places to walk around and go hiking, the dog loved it! But the best part is being able to shut yourself off from the outside world even though your so close. Once you shut the gates to the lower patio you really can't be seen by anyone and it feels like your own private oasis with a spectacular view! The only bummer was having to leave so soon. Grant was super nice and accommodating and we will definitely be returning here for a longer stay! I've already recommended this rental to lots of family and friends. It's not too far of a drive from Seattle, and only a short trip from Bellingham!

June 27, 2012

As of 2 weeks ago I contacted "Grant" about staying at his "Romantic Chalet", listed the dates (July 7-9) and came to an agreement at pricing and that payment would be made by check with initial deposit via Paypal. Three days go by (not unusuall because his communication is horrible) and then he asked me if I could add the 6th on as well. I inform him that I work that evening and couldn't possibly do it. So 2 days go by and no contact, I send him an email asking for paypal information and go on his website and he gave my reservation away to someone who would take Friday and Saturday! When I called him on it all he said was "something else came up" and "sorry". Well Grant, you are sorry, a sorry excuse for a human being whose word apparently means nothing. I'm sorry my schedule doesn't fit in with you making the most money, but being a cop it's really hard to get time off. I made my reservation two weeks before the people you gave it to, and ruined a rare piece of free time for me.STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY, HE WILL GIVE AWAY YOUR RESERVATION WITHOUT EVEN TELLING YOU, AND DOESN'T EVEN CARE!

Cozy, comfortable, woodsy retreat

December 24, 2011

A lovely place with lots of character and warmth. Short, charming ferry ride to get to the island. Grant was at the chalet to greet us and let us know how things work; his enthusiasm for the place is fantastic. He had lit all the fires, including the outdoor fireplace for us. The woodstove kept the place cozy-warm and we also fed the hot tub fire to keep it sweltering. The log bed in the master bedroom is lovely; nice water views from upstairs and down. There are some cool touches like the tin ceiling in the living room/dining room and clawfoot tub in the upstairs bathroom. Perfect romantic getaway spot. One wish: glass cups and wineglasses as there were only plastic, and a thermometer in the hot tub. We used the sightseeing sheet Grant provided to check out some spots on the island. There are some neat beaches (yes, even in the winter), one with sandstone, another with funky fishing shacks and paraphernalia. Note that the local cafe/pub, the Beach Store Cafe, is open only a few days per week, so if you're there for a short stay and want to check it out, find out the hours. Townspeople are friendly. . Overall - loved it!

Bad Business Dealings

September 9, 2011

Owner was very deceptive in dealing with me. His vacancy calendar showed there was a vacancy Labor day weekend 2011. I sent him an email asking to reserve the place for that weekend about 3 weeks before the weekend. No response , I called him and he said he would send me a bill. No response. Long story short I called and emailed up to a few days before the weekend with the assurance I had a place to stay. A few days before the weekend he tells me that some "distant relatives" were coming in and would stay and the place was not available. This is not good business practice and screwed up our weekend plans.

Would be lovely with a few updates

August 25, 2011

Let me start by saying, the owner, Grant was really nice and picked us up from the island taxi we took, he also bought us a picnic lunch so we could hang out locally, while he cleaned the place after his previous guests moved out. He also had helped us with suggestions about a way to get to Lummi from Orcas. The deck is phenomenal and the views from there are lovely. Sunrise is fab on the island (but in the woods is not the ideal place to view it, in my opinion, too many tall trees). Go down to the water for breathtaking views of sunrise. Outdoor firepit was great, nice to watch the stars. Free Wifi is a nice add. It is a great spot for 2, maybe 3 adults at best. Here is why, second bedroom bed is not a queen as stated, second bath has a tub only (so no shower). We had two families (so 4 adults) in there (our fault) so its less than ideal. Also, we could not use the hot tub (apparently it generates too much smoke). Grant, please do not take this the wrong way, but I would suggest getting rid of the bathrobes (discolored and stained), replacing towels (also discolored), new linens, new bath rugs (discolored). Updating the hair dryer (very very old GE model). Periodic decluttering from what guests (I assume) leave behind). Having shared the cost between two families, it was a good deal I would say.

We fell in love here, and are now getting married!

August 9, 2011

I'd like to share an email I recently wrote to Grant, the owner of Waterview Chalet in the Woods. Hello Grant, my name is Barbara Evans. Last year on Oct 15th, I rented your cabin with my (then) very new boyfriend. I admit that we fell deeply in love there, and had the most memorable weekend imaginable. We have now been together for almost a year, and are so in love that we will be married soon. We would first like to thank you, and let you know that a weekend of true romance and new love that started in your lovely home, has since developed into our dreams come true. We are so happy, and think and speak fondly of your home on Lummi often. The second thing we are wondering is if it is available to rent the first week in Oct this year, to share the anniversary of the day we met one year earlier. It would mean a lot to us to secure a reservation to spend our anniversary where we first fell in love. Please advise, and we will happily go about the reservation process. Thank you so very much, we appreciate everything, and can't wait to meet you again and thank you in person! Barbara and Miguel

If you like woods stay here

July 19, 2011

On the inside this house is cozy and quaint; and outside, the wooded mountainside setting is ideal for humans and dogs. If you like stoking fires you will be in heaven. You can have fires inside and out and even the hottob is fire-heated. The island is think with flora and fauna. We saw deer and racoon families within our first hours. Grant, the landlord will give you great tips for your optimal stay. Parents, kids and dogs will love the place.

Fun Getaway!

June 23, 2011

This was a fun, eclectic cabin nestled nicely in the woods! We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen with great views of the water. The wood stove heated up the house really nicely. Our dogs thoroughly enjoyed running in the woods behind the house. We had a fun night on the patio with a bonfire and smores! The owner Grant is a very nice, friendly gentleman who has done a good job fixing up the cabin. The only downside is not much sun because of tree coverage. Overall a great place at a good price!

Fabulous place to stay

I booked this as a place to get away for 3 days over my wife's birthday. Absolutely exceeded our expectations. This is a terrific property with everything you need. Wonderful views, supremely restful, quiet and a great place to recharge. Already booking a return for later this summer.

This Chalet was enchanting, We stayed for 3 Perfect days, we were greeted by Grant, who was seriously so kind and charming, he is the owner and quite a great host. He gave us instruction about the Chalet, showed us where everything was located, and all that you need is there in the Chalet, It is absolutely a wonderful place to stay. The view is breathtaking, the Chalet has so much personality, we did NOT want to leave. We made so many wonderful memories. We will go back many times. Thank you Grant! Mark and J.

Get getaway!

June 20, 2011

We stayed at this cozy, rustic cabin for 3 nights, and wished we could stay longer! We had our two little boys and our older dog. We felt safe on the fenced-in property. We made good use of the fire pit every evening. The view from the deck, kitchen, living room and bedrooms is beautiful! Grant walked us through a list of things to do and see on the island, including Frank's Beach--we went there every day. It's beautiful, quiet and the view of the San Juan Islands is lovely. We did some fly fishing, and even saw a seal swimming by. Checking out the tide pools at low tide was also a hit. We pretty much fell in love with Lummi Island. It is nice and small, very easy to get to from Seattle, the tiny car ferry is adorable, and the people are very nice. We'll probably be back.

BAD MANAGEMENT

April 18, 2011

We had planned to stay but never got the chance as the owner cancelled our reservation when he got a better offer from someone else - even after we paid the $100 deposit! The guy offered me a discounted rate but then cancelled when he realized it was a holiday weekend and others were willing to pay more. Absolutely infuriating.

We came to the area because our son had a sudden health problem. This is not the way you want to start a vacation but the house and surroundings were quiet, stress-reducing and wonderfully relaxing. It's a funky, fun and very comfortable place - and Grant was wonderful to deal with throughout. I hope to come back when we have less on our minds.

Beautiful views, clean/warm/cute rooms

March 14, 2011

This place is awesome! SO peaceful and beautiful!! The entire shalet is clean and maitained well. It is thoughtfully equipped with all that you will need to stay warm, and cozy. The living room has rocking chairs, and there is a very spacious deck with grill. The view is BEAUTIFUL from the living room, and attached deck, and both the rooms have the beautiful view to wake up to. The kitchen had a booth like in a diner, and it had all spices, condiments, etc that you may need to cook meals. The entire place had the traditional charm to it. Picture perfect!!! Thank you Grant!

view beautiful, owner over-bearing

September 16, 2010

The house was nice & the view was incredible but there was a dirty sock in the downstairs bathroom and other evidence the place hadn't been thoroughly cleaned before we arrived. The hottub looked undesirable. Location was pretty far from main part of island which is ok if you know ahead of time. This place would have received 4 stars if the owner hadn't been so over-bearing and controlling. We were treated like irresponsible high school students, the deposit wasn't returned for nearly a month, and additional fees were added right before we came. The owner had to be reminded that a deposit had been paid on 3 different occasions. I recommend the place, not the owner.

Blissful Escape

August 14, 2010

My husband and I rented this home for a couples retreat, and had a wonderful time. It was *so quiet*, so peaceful and so beautiful. All we could hear were the birds! The home is delightfully put together, with Grant's thoughtfulness evident all over the home. This is just what we look for with a rental home: spotlessly clean, carefully arranged, extremely comfortable (great bed!) with heavenly view. Grant recommended a hike to the top of Lummi, that gave us a breathtaking view of the San Juans. Wow! The feeling on Lummi is so relaxed, friendly, and happy. We loved our retreat in the woods!

Wonderful week in the woods

August 11, 2010

Our family (with 2 teenage boys) stayed at the "Waterview Chalet in the Woods" for a week in August 2010. There was plenty of room for the 4 of us, and we slept great because it is so quiet on the island! We spent the week whale watching, hiking, and kayaking, and just plain relaxing. I would recommend the chalet to anyone who doesn't want the bustle of a resort, but doesn't want to "rough it" either.

rundown and shady owner

July 27, 2010

the photos are way more appealing than the actual house. the hot tub is dirty and nearly impossible to keep hot. the grounds are strewn with piles of garbage and the house is hard to access. the owner hinted strongly that he wanted us to leave a tip and when we didn't (we were disappointed with the house), he invented a bunch of comical reasons to keep money from our damage deposit (on top of a $50 cleaning fee). I am a professional travel writer, have stayed in hundreds of hotels and rentals and have never been subjected to such shadiness. look elsewhere. not only is the house disappointing, but the owner will take advantage of you given the chance.

We came down to relax and take it easy and it is exactly what we were looking for. A great deck with a view, fire pit and hot tub. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepair our meals. We will be back. Thanks Grant.

At the last minute, I needed to cancel my reservation. In doing so I notified the proprietor of this at which point Grant became incredibly unresponsive - to the point of total silence. Very Romantic and Peaceful

December 15, 2009

Thanks Grant for sharing your romantic dream house with me. The Chalet in the Woods was a dream come true. Very nice and clean, better than some motels I have stayed at before. I was so amazed of the time you spent putting this Chalet in the Woods together, that pair of driftwood rockers by the fire was very very nice. The snow topped fir trees were worth picture taking. Forgot to mention that HOT TUB, enjoyed it even when it was cold outside and the snow falling. Never had such a great time in my life. Very relaxing, peaceful, and a dream on a island come true. It seemed to me that I was the only one on the island. I will be back, SOON. Thanks once again for a nice getaway.

Rustic Charm

September 10, 2009

This is a nice and very quiet spot with a very cool design. I really enjoyed the outdoor fireplace and the views, and the owner's hospitality. The gas grill is old and missing lava rocks, was difficult to get it up to temperature. Also, the hot tub was really an antique and probably could only fit 2 people (literally, picture a big barrel). Ask for pictures if you're serious about access to a hot tub during your stay - it was one of my criteria and the reason I chose this place, and ultimately the hot tub was a disappointment.

The cabin was definitely rustic. Nice deck and view. No oven except a small "convection" oven the size of a large toaster oven (and a microwave). Main problem was the smell of cat urine, so we had to leave windows open and fans blowing, even on cool days.

Opportunity to Relax in a Rustic Setting

May 31, 2009

We were first attracted to this vacation listing as we have several (right now six Chihuahua's) and the Waterview Chalet in the Woods is listed as pet friendly. Grant, the owner is extremely co-operative. We found everything as listed. This chalet is not modern. It is rustic, but in my opinion, that bring a great appeal. It was our first opportunity to holiday with our Chi's and that we could do in a very relaxed and wonderful environment. Scenery is magnificent. Jeff

Waterview Cottage

September 10, 2008

This vacation rental was somewhat of a disappointment to us. Even though it was pet friendly, we did not care for the pet hair all over the cushions in the kitchen and living room. The rustic cottage had spider webs everywhere. We felt the cottage was not very clean and we were charged a cleaning fee. The bathroom toilet upstairs kept clogging up and the shower in the bathroom downstairs had problems with the hot water handle. We felt the owner was still living in the cottage and only moved out for the days that we were there. We were looking forward to using the hot tub, but found it to be out of order when we arrived and no explanation was given for it not working. The deck was nice and had a nice view of the water.

Not What I expected

May 30, 2008

The owner was gracious and very accomodating. A wonderful host but the property needs a lot of clean up. The place is funky and has lots of character, we did love that. The pictures on the web site did not correctly show what the rental is like. It is rustic at best and needs a thorough cleaning. I never expect things to be "perfect" but this was far from it. We washed any dishes before using. The upstairs bathroom with its broken door and faucet were virtually useless to us.
