Description from owner

Lutsen Lakehouse - The ideal choice for a premier, private North Shore haven of rest. Available year-round.

"The heavens declare the glory of G-d and the earth shows His handiwork." Reserve your stay at Lutsen Lakehouse and you will experience this passage from the Book of Psalms as Lake Superior's thundering waves crash against the ledgerock shoreline, northern lights dance across the sky, the call of a loon ricochets over the water, and a full moon rises over the big lake they call Gitchigummi. And that's just the view outside.

Inside you will appreciate the comforts of a beautiful, professionally cleaned home: sleep soundly in a first-floor master suite with jetted bath, unwind by a soothing fire in the massive wood-burning fieldstone fireplace, and enjoy family meals and games around the handcrafted dining room table adjacent to the fully equipped kitchen.

Enjoy all this and be just a few minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, Superior Hiking Trail, Superior National Golf Course, and North Shore cross-country ski trails.

Lutsen Lakehouse -- The creation of G-d without; the comfort of home within.

1. OCCUPANCY: Maximum home occupancy is six persons, and no one outside your group is allowed on the property during your stay unless with permission. Two members of your group must be over 35 years old, and children should be 12 years old or above. When emailing us an inquiry, please share a little about your group (who you are, where you’re from, how many in your group, etc.), including the ages of any children.

2. AVAILABILITY: The availability calendar is accurate and updated regularly. Minimum stay is three nights.

3. RATES: Summer/Fall/Holiday: $450/night. Winter/Spring/Late Fall: $420/night.

The rate is the same for 3-6 guests. There are no additional charges beyond rent and tax (we pay for cleaning). Our Just for Two discount (1-2 guests) is $60/night off the current rate. We also offer a 5% discount for rentals of 6-9 nights and a 10% discount for rentals of 10 or more nights (weekly rate in the rate chart represents a 7-night rental).

4. PAYMENT: Once you reserve your dates, we will email you a first invoice for half the total rent, along with a short rental agreement to sign. A couple weeks before your rental dates, we will email you a second invoice for the balance payment. Payments are made with personal check. A credit card number is held in case of damage or breach of rental agreement. Once you are paid in full, we will email you a home information document that includes all the details on using the home (directions, key code, wifi password, things to bring, kitchen items, etc.).

5. CARE: The home is professionally cleaned by a couple who live just down the street and are available to help if a problem arises during your stay. Out of respect to our home and friendly neighbors, parties, excessive alcohol consumption, and loud noise are prohibited.

HISTORY: The home was built in 1994, has been owned by our family since 1999, and is available for respectful renters seeking a quiet, North Shore retreat. You will find pictures, poems, and other items around the house that represent our family and Christian faith.

LOCATION: Lutsen Lakehouse is conveniently located about one mile east of "downtown" Lutsen and about two miles east of Lutsen Ski Resort. Grand Marais is located 17 miles east of the house and Tofte 10 miles west. Duluth, MN is 90 miles down the shore to the west. The distance from Minneapolis to Lutsen Lakehouse is 248 miles (4 hour drive).

PRIVACY: The home has lots of privacy on 200' of Lake Superior coastline. There is no home on the neighboring property to the west and plenty of distance and trees from a home on the neighboring property to the east. There is also ample buffer (~500') between the home and North Shore 61 with a service road (Pedersen Lane) and long driveway.

VIEW/LAKESHORE: The home is designed around the dramatic southerly view of Lake Superior. All bedrooms have wonderful views of the lake. You’ll enjoy watching and hearing the waves crash on shore, seeing the moon rise over Lake Superior, and glimpsing the occasional ore boat glide along the horizon. The home sits very close to Lake Superior (about 75 feet away) and has easy access to water's edge. The ledgerock shoreline is perfect for walking, campfires, or just sitting and enjoying the view.

BEDROOMS and BATHROOMS: The house has three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms and a good-sized loft with digital keyboard. The master bedroom on the main level has a queen-sized bed. The attached master bath has a large shower and separate bath tub with jets. The two upstairs bedrooms each have two twin beds. There is a half bathroom upstairs and a full bathroom with large cedar sauna on the main level.

LIVING ROOM, DINING ROOM, KITCHEN: All three rooms are open and inter-connected. The LIVING ROOM extends out from the center of the home with panoramic views of the shore. A massive wood-burning fieldstone fireplace sits opposite the windows (complimentary split firewood is available for guests). The DINING ROOM has a large, round wood table perfect for family times together. The KITCHEN is fully equipped with Sub-Zero fridge, gas and electric stove, wall ovens, toaster, coffee maker, griddle, waffle iron, popcorn popper, microwave, full cookware (stainless steel), dishware, and silverware, dishwasher, and a large island with two stools.

DECKS: A deck extends along the lakeside (south side) and the west side of the house, with gliders, deck chairs, and a large table for relaxing and taking in the view. The covered west side deck off the dining room and kitchen is where the Weber grill is located. There is also a large deck upstairs off the west bedroom.

AUDIO/VISUAL: There is a 32' flat screen television (with 2 HDMI inputs) in the living room with satellite TV (Direct TV) and a DVD player. The sound system with Bose speakers plays CDs, FM/AM radio, and has a AUX port to plug in your portable audio device (you'll need to bring your own 1/8' male-to-male cable).

INTERNET: Free high-speed WiFi is available in the home.

PETS: Due to guests with allergies, we do not allow pets.

WASHER/DRIER: We store house supplies and our personal items in the laundry room, so while the home does have a washer/drier, it is not available to guests. A laundromat is available one mile west in Lutsen. For extended stays, clean linens and towels can be arranged with our cleaning staff.

WILDLIFE: Watch for white-tailed deer in the yard, bald eagles overhead, and all kinds of waterfowl on Lake Superior. If you're a little more fortunate, you may see a timber wolf.

“Excellent family get away.”

Reviewed 2 Jan 2014

Our diverse family, ranging in ages from 11 to 52, just spent 5 wonderful days at the Lutsen Lakehouse. The property was clean. The setting absolutely divine and the owners were wonderful to work with in regards to scheduling our stay. Our family loves the North Shore/Lutsen area and have been there many times over the years. This is definitely one of our favorite stays.

“Piece of Paradise”

I cannot imagine a more enjoyable vacation than the one we had at Lutsen Lakehouse. The setting is unbelievably beautiful, the house is so happily situated, and with so many amenities, that the only down side was we really didn't want to leave much or explore. Usually, the pictures you see on the internet create disappointment when you see the real thing, or so has been our experience. Not at Lutsen Lakehouse! The pictures do not do it justice. We hated to leave and as it was the time of the Olympics, we had Closing Ceremonies complete with a march down to the Lake, a musical recording of the Olympic theme and a bonfire down at the firepit. I won the gold medal for cake burning but I really felt the judges were a bit partial. Mr. Wheaton is a wonderful host and very obliging. We created so many special memories that will live on and on. We very much look forward to our next opportunity to spend time there!!

“Amazing North Shore Retreat”

No negatives whatsoever except that we had to come home! This is a beautiful location and equally lovely cabin. It is clean and well maintained and the views are breathtaking. Nice ledgerock area for fires and back far enough from hwy 61 for privacy. Would highly recommend.

“Gorgeous setting”

Breathtaking views of Lake Superior, the home is settled nicely on the lakeside. Interior was beautiful and bright, very much a North woods theme. Everything in the kitchen is well placed and accessible, there are small direction labels to help . Very close to Lutsen for skiing and altogether it is a relaxing family get-away.

This is the second year we have stayed at your beautiful home/cabin. the location is wonderful and with older children this is the perfect place to spend some time together. We are going to make it a tradition to try and get up here every winter. We love the open space and the fireplace is our favorite. thank you

“Awesome Spot For Family Time”

Thank you so much for making your Lake-house available to our family this week. We had such a goood time and the location of your home is spectacular! It was great for some family bonding (which can be tough with these teens!). But we sure had precious moments and created memories for everyone. Our kids even Thanked Us!!!

“Peaceful Getaway!”

This home was everything we had hoped for - Beautiful inside and beautiful scenery outside. We had plenty of room for our 4 person family. There was plenty to do in the surrounding areas yet we all felt very relaxed and refreshed after the week. It was a wonderful vacation.

“Perfect Getaway!”

Thank you so much for a perfect North Shore get-away! Your home is absolutely gorgeous - it was comfortable, beautifully decorated and we had everything we needed. It was so relaxing just reading and watching the waves crash ashore. The restaurants you recommended in Grand Marais were fabulous! We took advantage of the many hiking areas near your home. We also visited the Split Rock Light House and hiked in Gooseberry Falls. It truly was a fabulous get-away. We can't thank you enough for sharing your beautiful home with us. We feel truly blessed . . . John and Sue

Virtually a perfect getaway! The view is exquisite. While we were there the weather was stormy with 6-8 foot waves crashing on the rocks; it was completely mesmerizing. The house had everything we needed (even a waffle iron). We have stayed a lot of great places on the North Shore, but the Lutsen Lakehouse was the best.

“Relax and Enjoy”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2009

My family spent one week at the "Lutsen LakeHome" and enjoyed each and every day. The home offers comfort, convenience and unparalleled views of Lake Superior - up close! The big sky views are also attractive. There is a cosy and convenient coffee shop minutes away in Lutsen and much to see and do in Grand Marais. Bring your play clothes and do not forget a camera and binoculars.
