Area Information
The Old Port, Portland Maine:

About 10 blocks of boutiques, great restaurants and micro breweries. Not to be missed.

Saco Drive-in Movie Theater:

One of the oldest drive-ins in the US. Get there early for good parking spot -- SUVs must park in the rear. If you don't have a radio in your car, bring one or park close to a speaker. They have old-time intermission with popcorn, ice cream and hot dogs for sale. The mosquitoes are man-eaters, so bring bug repellent if you will have the windows down or will sit in the front row with lawn chairs. There are 2 movies -- one rated G, other usually R and they are current movies playing in regular theaters. Only open on weekends (Friday-Sat nights). About $15/vehicle.

Wyeth Center at the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine:
The largest permanent collection Andrew, NC and Jamie Wyeth art in the US. About 2 hr drive, but our favorite art museum.

Freeport, Maine:
An entire town of nothing but shopping. Fantastic outlets.

LL Bean (open 24/7), Freeport, Maine:
Go there at 3am and try on shoes -- they are open.

Aquaholics, Kennebunk, Maine:
Owned and operated by women surfers. They rent boards and have lessons for adults, camps for kids.

Old Orchard Beach:
Maine has wicked cold water so bring your wet suit, but recommended for surfing and swimming.

Ashley's Diner, Lyman, Maine:
Only open on the weekend, the Maine blueberry short-stack with bacon is the best. The owner's name is Margaret. Say hi.

The Lobster Shack, Two Lights, Cape Elizabeth, Maine:
The lobster roll is king here. Get a picnic table by the ocean and climb on the rocks down to the surf. Be ready for long lines.

The Grill Room, Portland, Maine:
Recommend the cheese plate for an appetizer, duck or scallops for the main course, and lobster mac and cheese for a side.

Becky's Diner, Portland, Maine:
Recommend the fish chowder or lobster roll. Don't miss a Maine specialty -- the bumbleberry pie.

Clam Bake, Scarborough, Maine:
It's cheesy with animal heads on the walls, but it's large (perfect for boisterous kids) and one of the cheapest places to get lobster. Afterwards, drive south toward Old Orchard Beach for the pier, carnival rides and fireworks every Thursday night (June 20-Aug 22nd).

The Clam Shack, Kennebunk, Maine:
Excellent, albeit expensive, fried clams. They don't take cards, so bring cash. Also long lines in the summer.

Dobra Tea, Portland, Maine:
After dinner, go for a vast selection of tea and charming interior.

Bard Coffee, Portland, Maine:
If excellent coffee is your thing, go to the #1 "Small Coffee Shop" in the US as ranked by CNN Money in 2011. Say hello to Jeremy, the awesome owner, and congratulate him for opening up a shop across the street from Starbucks
