Description of the Manhattan vacation townhouse rental
This is a generous garden apartment in a classic brownstone on a great, safe block in vibrant West Harlem. It is super convenient to 5 subways and easy to get anywhere in NYC. The neighborhood features multiple hip dining destinations and bars and beautiful buildings.

This historic home has been completely renovated and recently upgraded, with quality, classic rustic furnishings, lots of room and beautiful original details: decorative fireplace, wood floors, as well as exposed brick, all tiled kitchen and bath, premium fixtures. There is high-speed internet, premium cable with many movie channels, central air, radiant heat.

In season, the peaceful, landscaped outdoor patio affords a wonderful respite and place to relax in between outings or for a nice coffee in the morning. It also is like a second living room and provides a whole other place to sit and regroup.

The apartment can be used as a luxury getaway for 2, or is also spacious enough to sleep up to 6 with plenty of room to not feel cramped. Perfect for families or a great share for 2 couples, with direct access to the bathroom and kitchen from both rooms with privacy.

Only 3 blocks to 1 train and 5 blocks to A, B, C, D, trains and express is 2 stops to midtown (Columbus Circle), , 3 to Times Square! There is also a bus that stops on the corner leading directly to Museum Mile, Central Park, The Cloisters, and all over.

We are in a classic Harlem neighborhood, a former residence of Alexander Hamilton, with beautifully detailed historic homes to view, great new restaurants, cafes and craft beer pubs right around the corner, easy access to all of Manhattan and the rest of the city. The subways are lively late at night so recommended even into the wee hours, and the parking is easier than in most of the city (we can guide you to free street parking on the block). Plenty of grocery shopping nearby. We live on the premises in the rest of the brownstone and can provide directions, restaurant advice, babysitting, anything needed.

West Harlem is a magical neighborhood so convenient to the rest of Manhattan yet with a history and a feel all its own. We are 2 stops away from midtown, but on a beautiful block with trees and up on a hill, where you can feel the sea breeze from the Hudson, and can walk down to the river's edge for a picnic or get to a bike path that can take you all the way down to lower Manhattan.

We are close to several historic sections such as Hamilton Heights landmark district, Sugar Hill, Striver's Row. We are so close to many major teaching institutions such as Columbia University, City College, Barnard, Teacher's College, Jewish Theological Seminary, Manhattan School of Music, Columbia Presbyterian. We are very near some gorgeous sights such as The Cloisters, St. John the Divine, Fort Tryon Park, and to such landmarks as the Apollo Theater.

It is a diverse and vibrant area with plenty of history and charm, a great vantage point from which to explore the whole city.
Area Information
Hamilton Heights is a vibrant neighborhood with plenty of character and distinction, landmarked, historic brownstones and townhouses, and includes the former residence of U.S. president Alexander Hamilton.

It is great to be in a Manhattan neighborhood with its own unique character yet completely convenient to so many modes of transport that it is an easy jump to all the rest of Manhattan.

Plenty of new, interesting bars and restaurants have enhanced life here and offer a nice variety of options with diverse clientele.

Our block has plenty of families and an international array of residents.

My friend, myself and our three daughters stayed here for three nights. It was a wonderful space and we accessed the subway easily and used it exclusively for our travels. Visitors need to learn about the difference between local and express (it took us a day!) and then you are off! The A-train was a 15 or 20 minute trip to downtown, door to "door", the 1 train is a lot longer but less of a walk. It was terrific to have so much space when we arrived back "home" thoroughly exhausted and had enough room not to get on each others' nerves. Laurel was lovely and accommodating. The neighbourhood was lively and we felt safe and welcomed. I would recommend to others to ensure that they go both to Broadway and Amsterdam as both are such different streets and increases the selections of restaurants and stores.
--Jane

My husband and I had only been in New York twice before, for 2-3 days each time, staying with friends. We decided to find an apartment to stay for the 11 days we had between two other commitments in the east. This apartment could not have been better - for placement in the city with easy access to subways, buses and walking to all the many museums and parks we visited, as well as seeing our friends. We cooked many meals ourselves, as well as going to restaurants in the area and downtown. Everything anyone could need was supplied in the apartment, and it was a quiet, interesting neighborhood to be staying in- in contrast to cold/impersonal hotels. Our only regrets were not getting to meet lauren in person, as she was working elsewhere, and in having to leave- we would have loved to stay a few more weeks- things to see in the city are overwhelming in numbers, and from this cozy apartment were easy to access.
--Jimmy

My family wanted to find a place in New York that had easy access to all the sites. We couldn't have selected a better place. The subway was only a few blocks away and it was easy to get around the city. We felt very safe walking the streets and enjoying the sites. Peter, the owner, was very gracious and helpful and gave us some great information on restaurants, tourist sites and the local eateries and bars. We got there a little early, and he was very accomodating in letting us leave our luggage while they finished cleaning. He also, let us leave our baggage when we were leaving for the airport.
--Corinne

We loved the Brownstone apartment! It provided much more space and comfort than a hotel. The owner was very helpful.
--Marge

Lauren was very friendly. I loved the neighborhood and would highly recommend this place. Its really close to the subway and there are some great places to eat around the apartment as well.
-- Jennifer

Having travelled from far away New Zealand I arrived to find this wonderful apartment easily exceeding my expectations. Location is perfect in UWS for you get to experience more of a typical NY suburb away from CBD. Hamilton Heights has a mixture of cultures and people all jumbled together and I felt very safe and comfortable when walking the streets. This area is going through a change as more mid-income earners move into this area to buy property and often upgrade these historical brown terrace houses. This has resulted in new bars and restaurants including the "Pub" right on the corner, only 50 metres from your apartment. The Subway is so easy to use and Train 1 (Red Line) gives you access to most of the main attractions including Times Square, Central Park and Statue of Liberty (last stop at South Ferry). Recommend you buy a weekly Metro Card at only US$32 with unlimited use for seven days. This apartment oozes heaps of character and you really feel like you're living history with its charming features within a very comfortable environment. Kitchen provides everything you need to cook yourself or simply make a cup of coffee from Lauren's classy coffee pot (great expresso made the old way) located on gas stove. The garden really is a bonus and just adds to the total accommodation package and surroundings. There are many small local mini markets/deli's for milk and basis foods within short walking distances. I used the supermarket on 145th Street for the big shop. Lauren was in Italy at the time of my stay but she was so helpful via email supported by her husband, Peter and sons who I met several times and were most helpful - many thanks team. The place you stay is important to ensure your holiday is the best it can be and on this basis I have no hesitation to recommend Lauren & Peter's apartment - "Outstanding Accommodation". Enjoy your stay--Dave

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there parking?
A: Free street parking is easier here that in all the rest of NYC, but if there are no spots we can recommend a cheap and safe garage near the subway.
Q: How is the grocery shopping?
A: There are 3 very large supermarkets (one renowned one is Fairway with loads of health and specialty products if you are staying awhile and want to stock up). Also many small convenience stores as close as the corner.
