Other Vacation Rental Amenities
Columbia is our closest town - with only 900 residents, the town still retains the warmth and friendliness of southern small towns. Two restaurants, a marina, wonderful walking trails, a new grocery store. Within 30-45 minutes are other towns that have everything you could want, too.

Serene cottage

June 25, 2015

If you are looking for a place to relax and rewind at a reasonable price, this is the place. The cottage looks very simple from the outside, but inside it decorated beautifully. It is clean and comfortable, and feels like home the minute you step in. The view of the sound from the porch is amazing with deck chairs on the screened in porch. The bed was comfortable and the surroundings peaceful. This place is in the middle of nowhere with a very small town with a couple of restaurants, grocery store, gas station, etc., but you will have to drive a ways to get to things you want to do, but coming back to the cottage to relax after a long day was heaven. My only two complaints aren't the owners faults--just things one should be aware of. The water has a bit of a smell, not sulphur but a bit off-putting, not horribly so, The bugs at night are horrible. Being on the water in North Carolina is a mosquito and gnat magnet. Just be prepared. They weren't a problem during the day in June, but at night they flocked to the light in droves. Overall, I loved this cottage and would definitely stay again!

Owner's reply:

Thanks for the positive words. And yes, this time of year bug spray is a smart item to pack. And though we have a filter on the shared well, and change it regularly, I'll make sure the neighbor who handles it knows that you had some of that sulpher smell. That's why we keep a water filter in the fridge for guests to use. We look forward to having you back again.

Lovely Secluded Getaway

July 11, 2013

Egret on the Sound was a delightful spot. Michelle, the rental contact, was incredibly helpful and prompt in communication about everything. The house was so tastefully decorated, clean, and comfortable. All in all a great (very secluded) getaway. If you're looking for a peaceful retreat with glorious sunsets...this is it! And you can't beat the price!

Owner's reply:

And Gwenyth and her friend were delightful through the process on my end as the owner, and took great care of our beloved cottage. Thanks!

A peaceful place

April 1, 2013

Egret is one of the most peaceful, relaxing places my husband and I have ever visited! We live in the city and often hear traffic, geese, neighbors, and police sirens. When we arrived at Egret, the first thing we noticed was the complete silence and relaxing atmosphere. We instantly fell in love with Egret's charm. We spent two nights in the lovely cottage and left feeling rested and ready to tackle the city life again. We can't wait to visit again!

Michelle Handler

Owner's reply:

So glad you had an enjoyable stay at our favorite getaway!

Owner Supplied Testimonials

The cottage is beautifully furnished and located on a quiet stretch of
the Albemarle Sound- it provided the backdrop for a perfect weekend
getaway! The screened porch is a great place to relax or bird watch, and
the dock and views over the sound are lovely. The property is close
enough to the outer banks for a day trip, but far enough from the
touristy areas for some peace and quiet. There are also some nice local
historic sites and opportunities to view wildlife. We visited in late
November, and had great luck with the weather- sunny and sixty-five degrees!

My husband and I really enjoyed the stay at Egret! We really had a wonderful time
and it is so peaceful there! We were so sad that we only had 2 days to enjoy it!
We didn'tdo anything but stay in our last full day and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
It really was great and you have a great cottage there!

A very belated acknowledgement of the wonder of
your cottage and a thank you for the experience.
I loved you place and thank you for sharing.
Everything was perfect and I will certainly remember your cottage
for myself and friends looking for a great/quite getaway in the future

We had a wonderful time. The cottage is great, and is very tastefully furnished and well-equipped.
It was the perfect location for a relaxing get away, and the screen porch served as our
'home away from home' while we were there. We will definitely recommend it to our friends!”

Our stay at the cottage was WONDERFUL. It was the perfect place for some
much needed R&R, regrouping, and most importantly reconnection. Although
the weather was not as cooperative as we would have liked, the comforts
and coziness of the cottage set the perfect ambiance for the much needed
quality time we spent. We look forward to returning since it is now a
special place for us.

I was just going to let you know that my husband and I had a wonderful time
at Egret! We just loved the privacy and isolation while still getting to
enjoy the water and a beautiful view! We loved sitting out on the pier and
watching the sunset. The screened in porch is awesome and so comfortable.
We took the [Scuppernong River] boat ride that is offered at the Visitor's Center and
enjoyed that and went over to Bodie Island and sat on the beach. We looked
for bear but didn't get to see any this time.
We enjoyed our getaway and thank you for opening your place to us.

Thank you for the fast return of our deposit.
We had a wonderful time at the cottage and will definitely be back.
It is a very nicely appointed cottage with a wonderful view.
We have already passed your info to an interested friend
who also likes to visit wildlife preserves.
We look forward to the next visit.

Your cottage is great. So comfortable and clean.
Perfect spot right on the water and best of all we were the only ones there!!
Dolphins one day out by the pier.
We could take our kayaks out the back door
and spend the day paddling up and down the shoreline.
Love the city boardwalk, too, and the fresh seafood store down the street.
Beautiful spot, great cottage, great service.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thank you so much for such a quiet, stress-free weekend!
We spent the majority of our time here just sitting together on the
screened porch listening to the water and the wind. It was absolutely perfect!
It's a great place with a great vibe, peaceful retreat, great for rejuvenation.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

How did you ever find this place?
We love it, absolutely love it. Our kind of place...
simple, quiet, off the beaten path, on the water...
just us and the wildlife.
We are already talking about our return visit.

So, we fell madly in love with your charming cottage and the area!!!!
I must confess there was a tear in my eye as we left. Thank you for the weather.
We loved your decorator's eye. I can't even imagine anything you could do to make it better.
Thanks and we will definitely recommend it to others.

The Egret cottage is everything I need for the ideal coastal plains vacation.
Seclusion and relaxing solitude, can't be-beaten scenery and views on the
Albemarle, a day trip within an easy drive in each direction, and within 5 minutes from a quaint down east village.
The fishing and paddling variety can't be beaten. I paddle and fish different water every day.
We have been staying at the Egret regularly for years. It's my secret hideaway.

We very much enjoyed our stay there.
It was peaceful and relaxing.
You have done a nice job making the cottage comfortable and the decor pleasing.
Screened porch was great for morning coffee.
We had a nice morning paddle before leaving yesterday.
I plan to return in the future.

Your cottage is wonderful and such a relaxing and quiet place.
We thoroughly enjoyed being there. Your home is laid out well, the screen porch adds to the enjoyment.
It was a much needed and restful place to take a break.
The breaking of the water on the banks, watching the boats glide by and the fishermen
haul in crab cages and watching the pelicans swoop down over the water was so restful and pleasant.
Thank you so much for allowing us the privilege to have such a lovely place to rest.

We made it home thoroughly refreshed!
We were charmed by your many special touches that really made Egret Cottage a home.
Thanks again for your wonderful hospitality.

I will be coming back very soon! I can't say enough good things about the house.
It was more than I could have hoped. I slept well and competed well in the race the next morning.
I couldn't wait to get back and relax on that great chair by the window in the living room.
I really appreciate the opportunity to have visited and look forward to being there again soon.

This place was perfect for relaxing, and for day trips to shop or dine at the beach. I'm coming back with my son for Easter! I think honeymooners would love this cottage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do people say they enjoy most about your cottage?
A: Relaxing! They love being on the screened porch, too, and the water just steps from the door. Just hanging out at the cottage is our favorite thing when we visit, too. We read, watch movies, nap, do some cooking, and enjoy walking in the area.
Q: What is available to go see/do in the area?
A: If you love nature, Tyrrell County and the adjoining counties like Hyde, have thousands of acres of preserved land. Right in town from the Visitor's Center you can walk a boardwalk that is elevated in the swamps. Other people love going to Lake Mattamuskeet, about 30 minutes south of Columbia. We also enjoy Lake Phelps and the preserves there. Birdwatchers love these areas, as it is on the Eastern Flyway. History lovers will enjoy tons of options, including Somerset Place Plantation, the Wright Brothers Memorial, and the historic towns along the Albemarle, too. In the summer, the Lost Colony play near Manteo is a must. Some people come to boat in the area (lots of public ramps, plus great kayak/canoe options. Others like to spend a day at the beach or shopping along the Outer Banks. We love the village of Manteo. There's tons more to do than we can list here.
Q: What about dining options?
A: The village of Columbia is small, about 900 people - there are only 5000 people in the whole county! But we have a few options in the village, as well as plenty more in Manteo and on the Outer Banks.
