Reviews for this vacation home rental in Manzanillo, Limon, Costa Rica
No beach access
May 28, 2015
This is a very nice property and looks just like the photos. Mary and Yari were both very accessible and helpful. Well equipped kitchens and clean. We did not have a good trip, but not all of it was the house. One thing that I was very disappointed in, and the reason I gave a 3 rating, is because the beach that is 'on site' is a private beach and we were not allowed to even walk to it. This is a big deal for me because my only real requirement for a vacation rental is that I can walk out the door and hit the beach. It rained a lot when we were there so all our clothes and bedding felt damp all the time. It's a rain forest, I get it. The only local fauna we saw in the wild was one agouti. Slouths and howler monkeys live in the canopy and rarely come down, so you're not going to wake up to wildlife out your window. But I do recommend the Jaguar Rescue Center for viewing local animals. Great tour. I had the upstairs room in the house and it's very spacious and comfortable. It seems odd to have doors that open onto a rooftop you can't go out on, but still pretty. We had some food stolen from the kitchen and ended up leaving a couple of days early. Our friends had been robbed in San Jose when they had a flat tire, so when that happened we just didn't feel safe any longer. We also arrived a day late because we were very lost from the directions we were sent. Streets signs are rare and the directions had landmarks that are no longer there. Get GPS! So I've tried to be fair and not let the other experiences weigh against the property, but the beach access is just a deal breaker for me.

We stay 5 days in March , the house is great ,there is a safe in each room , enough of bottled water , the beach are very nice , the monkeys are just on tree next to the house and are crying for the wake up call ( early in the morning ) hi hi hi. We saw Maccaws , butterfly . We were realy in the jungle and feel so . The only problem was that WE do not choose the good week for calm because of the santa week . It is our fault we didn't think about this point . There was more people on the beach and on the road ( less calm than normal ) . We should have ask Mary to find someone to cook for us and take time to relax more . Next time .
Thank you so much for your review Roland! It's true that Semana Santa is a very busy, festive week in our area, the busiest all year. I wish I would have thought to ask you if you knew about it. We hope you come back again during a quieter time to enjoy the true peace and beauty our area has to offer. Wishing you the best in your future travels!

We recently returned home from a wonderful and relaxing stay at La Bella Sirena. We travelled with three boys (two teenagers) and we could not have asked for more. The "jungle house", as we nicknamed it, is located in the middle of the jungle. During our morning coffee, we enjoyed the sights of howler monkeys, toucans, sloths and morpho blue butterflies. The home is well taken care of, spacious and lovely. Mary is a wonderful host and the house manager is absolutely fabulous. She attended to all of our needs, booked tours for us and assisted us whenever needed. She is worth her weight in gold !! The home is located very close to the Manzanillo beach--a short bike ride away. It is a lovely beach where you can snorkel the reef or hike through the wilderness refuge. Give Abel, a local guide, a call, he is terrific. The house is also located on a bus route to Puerto Viejo, Cahuita and Limon. We did not have a car so we either used the bikes or the local bus service which was easy to figure out. Thanks to Mary, we were also able to have a local person come into the home to make our meals....she was a terrific cook and really made it a vacation for my husband and I. We all loved this home. Our boys were able to have their own space on the second floor and we had down time on the first floor. It is a great property and a great location in Costa Rica. The village of Manzanillo is quiet, full of wildlife, great beaches and hiking and the local people are very friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend this property and we will certainly return to Costa Rica and La Bella Sirena.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of Bella Sirena! We're happy you and your family enjoyed your visit to our little slice of Paradise. It's funny, because we always say Yari is worth her weight in gold too! We feel incredibly lucky to have found a wonderful staff to assist our guests so they can just relax and enjoy! Please come again soon!

Beautiful House & Amazing Vacation
March 27, 2014
My wife and I spent a week here and had an amazing vacation! Being a weary traveler and hardly ever traveling outside of the U.S. I had my reservations to travel to a remote area, but my worries were lifted from the second we got there. This amazing home is unlike anything we had ever experienced and was truly an unforgettable time. The house itself is amazing. Beautiful wooden structure with charm and engineering feats that were an art in itself. With 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 3 kitchens; this house is incredible for entertaining many or for two people to enjoy all of the space offered. No pictures will do this house and property justice, as a still photo doesn't capture the amount of open space and care that the home offers. The main floor offers a wide open area with no walls, so you feel like you are a part of this beautiful jungle at all times. This was great for coffee and a book in the mornings while relaxing in the hammock or at night when we would stay in to enjoy cocktails and listen to the many sounds of nature. Extremely clean and well maintained and everything you need to live comfortably. The staff was also extremely pleasant and helpful whenever we needed anything. A+ for them as well. The surrounding towns and beaches were something out of a magazine. Some of the most incredible beaches were only a short bike ride away. Bikes were also provided and quickly turned into our primary means of transportation. The towns offered endless amounts of activities, whether it was a lazy day on the beach with a beer, or checking out a surf competition in Playa Cocles, to taking in the night life and checking out Reggae bands in Puerto Viejo, every day was a day you wished would not end. The towns had a Rastafarian vibe and is almost a Caribbean sub-culture of it's own. Everyone seems to have a care-free attitude and made a couple "outsiders" feel right at home. Extremely nice and pleasant people, no hassles or problems whatsoever. I would recommend this house and vacation rental to anyone. Not one bad thing to say, and we will be coming back next year. In fact, we started to plan our return trip on the flight home. Definitely a different experience than an all-inclusive resort or a pampered trip, but I would argue that this is better. A better adventure, a better experience, and an all around better time! If I could give this 10 stars I would! Thanks Mary, we will be back! - Ryan & Rory
Thank you for this amazing review of our home Ryan and Rory! We love hearing that guests enjoyed their vacation at the house to the fullest and it sounds like you two know how to have a great time in nature! We appreciate you taking the time to review so other guests can get an idea of what our home and the area has to offer. We look forward to your next visit! All the best,

Time of our lives
March 7, 2014
My family spent a week here and it wasn't long enough! From the moment we arrived to the day we had to leave, we were in awe of the beautiful home and it's surroundings. We traveled in a group of 5 adults and one 2 year old by rental car from San Jose Airport. The drive was scenic and pretty easy to travel with our GPS and the coordinates Mary provided. When we arrived, Dania, our caretaker was waiting for us, she was an absolute sweetheart and we couldn't have felt more comfortable. The people of Manzanillo were so welcoming, we even met a guy who knew the local fishermen and ended up scoring 5 fresh HUGE lobsters for a great deal! We used the outdoor grill at the home and had a FEAST that night! The home had everything we needed, fridge, stove, cups, plates, utensils even a blender! needless to say, we felt right at home. La Bella Sirena is Highly recommended, we loved every second of our stay! If you are traveling in a large group, there is no better place to make memories that will last a lifetime yet have enough space to be able to really relax and enjoy your vacation. This was our first time to Costa Rica but not our last and we will definitely be staying at La Bella Sirena again! Thank you Mary and Victor!

An idyllic vacation spot at the end of the road

We spent a week at the Bella Sirena and had an incredible time. The house is beautiful. We woke up every morning to the sounds of howler monkeys howling and birds chirping. The grounds around the house are beautifully manicured -- a feast for the eyes and for the ears. Almost every day we were visited by a hummingbird and a blue morpho butterfly. We saw a sloth high up in the tree and watched two sets of howler monkeys playing in the trees. We all loved the town of Manzanillo. It is tiny and is in no way your typical tourist town -- there are three small grocery stores and three sodas (cafes) and an ice cream store. I'm sure there are other things that we missed, but it's small and quaint. The beach is long and beautiful. If you walk south of town, there is a reef that comes up to the shore so you can see lots of sealife, including lots of sea urchins so make sure you wear your shoes.
La Bella Sirena was a perfect place for a vacation that was a mix of adventure, relaxation (in incredibly beautiful surroundings) and feeling like you are a part of another country, not just a tourist. We ate several meals at the sodas in town and bought groceries to make some meals at home. My son made us one of the best smoothies I've ever had. The fresh mangoes and pineapples were abundant and cheap.
We went snorkeling in several different sports in town and at nearby Punta Uva, We went ziplining (not for the feint of heart) and on a walk in the rain forest with a guide. We went to the jaguar preserve which is a great way to see native animals up close and to learn lots about them.
It was really great having Bibo, the caretaker, around. His brother is a tourguide so he took us on a walk through the rain forest. Bibo took us to a waterfall one day that was incredibly refreshing. We had his mom cook for us two nights -- her garlic shimp was superb.
We went to Puerto Viejo, a much bigger town about a half hour away, one evening for dinner. We had a good dinner, but were happy to return to our quiet home in the jungle -- and glad not to be staying in the midst of so many tourists.
I want to return to La Bella Sirena when I can stay longer. I could have spent much more time in the hammock reading and watching for new forms of life to pass by. A near-perfect vacation -- can't say enough good things about the house, the location and the country -- truly an idyllic vacation spot!

We stayed at Bella Sirena in June, 2008. We were two adults and two twelve-year-old girls that we mentor. It was an amazing experience! Our city kids from DC certainly had never seen anything like it, and being surrounded by nature was amazing. We also tracked down some howler monkeys by their howels, and saw lots of wildlife. The nearby beaches were beautiful and peaceful. We fully recommend Bella Sirena!

I just returned from our stay at the "La Bella Serena," and it was one of the most picturesque places I have ever seen or been to. I traveled with my girlfriend and another couple that we work with and stayed for a full week. I was a little skeptical at first, considering we went during the "rainy" season, however, the weather was absolutely beautiful throughout our entire stay...It was Sunny and warm everyday, and it only rained at night which just made for a better nights sleep as the rain hit the tin roof of the Villa...We would wake up every morning to the sound of the Howler monkeys roaring in the trees above. We experienced fantastic food at many restaurants throughout the local towns, went snorkeling, took jungle hikes to the hidden waterfalls, rented bicycles for a day, went to the Jaguar Rescue Center where we were able to play with the monkeys and hold sloths, and not to mention, enjoyed many of the beaches nearby...Manzanillo is a very small town, as well as the other close-by towns, but it was nice to not be overrun by other tourists...The beaches are absolutely beautiful, and also very "non-touristy." The locals are very nice and welcoming to everyone...Bibo is also a very nice guy that takes care of anything that you need at the place...I would definitely reccommend "La Bella Serena" to anyone that enjoys the beauty of nature and serenity...I'll also throw in that it was actually nice to not receive any phone calls or texts, b/c wifi is few and far between...This was my first trip out of the United States and its going to be hard to beat a trip like the one I just took with my friends...Two thumbs up!!!

We loved, loved, loved everything about our week's stay at Bella Sirena. The setting was amazing--howler monkeys waking us up in the morning and parrots coming in later in the day. Toucans, over 50 species of birds seen--completely amazing. The caretaker was friendly, helpful, warm, and welcoming. The setting was perfect. We definitely would go back.

We had an AMAZING time! I can't even begin to say thank you for renting
us that absolute paradise property. The house took our breath away as
soon as we stepped out of the car. It was quite dark and the porch was
lit up just like in the photos we'd seen.
Believe it or not, our favorite part of the whole trip was afternoon
rain showers. We'd sit in the upstairs room with the doors flung open
and watch the rain hitting the jungle.
The grounds keeper was great! He arranged tours for the other couple we
were staying with and was always able to answer any questions we had
for him. I also wanted to mention that we had the housekeeper cook for us
one night (on the suggestion of the greeting card on the coffee table)
and we were thrilled with the meal. It was hands down the best dinner
we ate the whole time we were there (and that's saying quite a bit). The
experience was one that every guest should take advantage of. For the
price, it really couldn't be beat and we had the luxury of sitting on
the porch with our glasses of wine, surrounded by nature throughout
dinner without ever having to leave the house :)
I have already had several people ask me for the link since seeing my
photos and I'm sure there will be more still. Andy and I are thinking
of when we can go back and will probably make the Bella Sirena a yearly
get away if schedules permit. Between the two of us, we've seen every part
of Costa Rica now, but Manzanillo has been our favorite by far. We'd
set out to find a quiet and romantic hidden paradise, and we found nothing
short of exactly that.
Please feel free to use me as a reference if anyone every wants a
testimony. I'd also be happy to share any of my photos.
Thank you again and I hope to be in touch quite soon.
Looking forward to a much needed R&R, I found Mary's house on the Internet and booked 2 weeks. The pictures were beautiful but pale considerably with the real thing!
The house was FANTASTIC!!! Plenty of room and drop-dead gorgeous, my wife's vocabulary was reduced to a single syllable, "WOW", which she repeated for 2 days. The boys were just giddy when they saw a three-toed sloth climbing a tree less than 20' from the house. After following the path to the beach, which in itself is wonderful treat for any nature lover and photographer, we stepped out of the jungle and my wife promptly started repeating "the word of the week." The beach made us feel that we were the only souls around for miles, almost our own private beach!
The caretaker, Bibo, was more than helpful and arranged almost all of our excursions for us; zip-lining, dolphin spotting, resturants, and even gave us a tour to Bocas del Toros, Panama. What minor problems that arose he was instantly on top of the situation and had it fixed in no time.
I would make a suggestion to anyone thinking about going to anywhere in Costa Rica; when you rent a car, get the GPS. The fee is nominal when you figure the gas, time, and frustration of getting lost would cost on your vacation. It was a Godsend, took us right to Manzanillo without a hitch, and Mary gives excellent directions too!
Our two weeks were over too soon and I already miss it, I've only been back 4 days!
I want to thank you Mary, and Bibo, for making my vacation a wonderful break and for giving my boys memories that they will carry fondly for the rest of their lives. I will certainly return!
(The coolest part about the whole trip is that neither of the boys, 12yrs and 15yrs, whined once about not having a TV or XBox. And THEY never realized it!)
Much love and thanks again!
Robert, Baghdad, Iraq
Each day while enjoying early morning coffee on the upstairs deck, we watched howler monkeys swing through the trees and flocks of parrots fly over. From the downstairs living area, we had close-up views of hummingbirds, our first ever sighting of chestnut-colored woodpecker (spotted by one of my granddaughters) in the banana tree at the bottom of the
steps, and scarlet-rumped tanagers, among many others.
Preparing meals or washing dishes in such surroundings was pure pleasure. A sloth hung out in a cecropia tree along the path to the beach. The close-in reefs in nearby Manzanillo drew us back each day for snorkeling; even the 5-year-old donned her mask to enjoy the fish in tide pools. The water was calm and clear in June, tropical fish abundant and the coral amazing.
We discovered a gourmet supermarket between Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo on the last day; fresh baked bread every day, wonderful cheeses, plenty of fine choices if you are cooking in. Interesting small restaurants are along that road for an evening out.
Ceiling fans kept the bedrooms cool at night, and we draped the beds with the mosquito netting more for the romance of it than necessity, because the bedrooms are screened. In the evening in the open areas, we did use repellent, but there were not many insects. The big showers are great, the tropical hardwood floors beautiful. We had happy hours playing cards, listening to the sounds, going over the day's adventures. The biggest problem was deciding which hammock, couch or chair to enjoy, plenty for the six of us to choose from. The caretaker came by every day
to see if we needed anything. Our four days sped by, we would love to have had more time at La Bella Sirena. We highly recommend it.
A group of us spent a week at La Bella Sirena in January and loved it! The incredible natural beauty of Costa Rica was perfectly enhanced by our comfortable and elegant lodgings. We had everything we needed and then some, yet we never felt out of place in the wildness of the rainforest. Howler monkeys, sloths, toucans - they're all right there in the yard. The nearby communities of Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo are both welcoming and relaxed, offering anything a traveler might need: restaurants, markets, shops, and gorgeous Caribbean beaches! We enjoyed the great restaurants, and also had a fabulous time cooking in the all-inclusive kitchen. For a little extra fun we created a different "drink of the day" every day to take advantage of the abundance of exotic fruits (and tasty Costa Rican rum). We slept soundly in the comfortable bug-free bedrooms, the gentle sounds of the rainforest providing a relaxing sonic background.
I can't think of a better way to have had our first Costa Rican experience, nor can I offer enough praise for this lovely vacation rental. Take full advantage of its beauty!
My family and I stayed at La Bella Sirena this past winter and had a wonderful time!!!! The location is so perfect for spending time with loved ones and exploring the abundant nature surrounding you. Each morning we looked high in one of the tree tops next to the house to see if "our" sloth was still there. We would always see it and even once watched it come down to the ground (Quite a sight!!) My son was just over a year old at the time and loved watching and hearing all of the animals in the rainforest. We really enjoyed our room, it was all screened in, which we appreciated as it kept the mosquitos outside so we were able to sleep well. The kitchen is really wonderful to use, we would go to the market make fabulous guacamole and fresh fish on nights we felt like staying in. The beach is dreamy, fairly soft waves, but enough for body surfing, I felt totally comfortable to have my son in the shallows to teach him to swim. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone. Especially those who want a truly authentic Costa Rican experience!!!!!
