Description from owner

Seabird Key is a ten acre private island available for rental by the week featuring an architecturally stunning home with gracious porches and multi level decks; a private, sandy beach and beautiful, tropical gardens throughout. Only 5 minutes offshore by boat, this is the Island that has it all....towering coconut palms, chickee huts, swinging hammocks, tropical gardens, and breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico. Seabird Key is the place where Swiss Family Robinson meets Ernest Hemingway! The tropical home is built of cypress and has an old Florida elegance that well suits the Island environment. The interior decor is enhanced with nautical antiques, but the amenities and features are quite up to date. The home comfortably sleeps eight.

Sunbathe on your own private sandy beach with towering coconut palms. No, you're not in Tahiti, but you might think you are! The entire ten-acre island has flowering plants, native trees and over 50 varieties of palms. It's so easy to surrender yourself to the unspoiled nature of this beautiful Island; a sanctuary for nesting pelicans, herons, ibises, cormorants, ospreys, and other avian species.

Boating in the Keys has something to offer everyone! Take the 19' Boston Whaler provided for your exclusive use during your stay and explore the deep blue ocean waters and see dolphins swimming in the wild, or witness living coral reefs in tranquil surrounding waters. Sombrero Reef for snorkeling or scuba diving is a 20 minute boat ride away. Explore the amazing marine life with brilliant colors and a diverse marine eco-system. The boat is equipped with an assortment of masks, fins, snorkels, and life vests. At the end of the day, take a late afternoon sunset cruise....ahhhh!

Kayaking is a favorite past time on Seabird. We provide 4 kayaks, and if you need more, they're easily available. As you paddle around the Island, observe the enchanted world of pristine mangrove forest. Paddling is fun; the slower you go, the more you see. The kids enjoy zipping around the bay pulled by the boat on the towing tube. If sailing is more your speed, take the 14' Hobie Cat out in the bay for an adventure sail. No sign-up, no check-out...just push off and get underway. For a ride on the mainland, Seabird provides two classic style bicycles, affectionately referred to as "conch cruisers." A favorite pass-time of the owners of Seabird is to bike down the old seven mile bridge that leads to the historic Pigeon Key.

Have the fishing trip of your dreams! The Florida Keys beckons millions of dedicated anglers every year who thrill to the chase, and anticipate the rush of catching the fish of a lifetime. Whether you desire game fishing, sport fishing, flats fishing, or capturing a treat for a tasty meal, there's no shortage of opportunity. Fishing guides and captains are available.

Enough adventure? There's always a perfect shady spot on the Island with an empty hammock. Get back to that favorite Hemingway novel or just nod off in the gentle Florida breeze. But wake up in time to toast the sunset atop Seabird's 35' widows walk. The 360 degree ocean view is spectacular!

Make your own memories at Seabird Key...the perfect romantic getaway, the fishing trip of a lifetime, or a unique family vacation. Your fantasy, your island!

If you need to get back to the mainland, it's only 5 minutes away with many fine, local restaurants and attractions in and around Marathon. Historic Key West is an easy 45 minute drive down the Old Florida Highway and you can certainly get into the party mood down in Key West! You'll be happy to return to your own private island at the end of the day!

The owners of Seabird Key are dedicated to complete sustainability with little or no impact to the surrounding environment, while offering beautiful accommodations and most mainland "creature comforts." Many say that the home on Seabird is the most technologically advanced home in the United States. But not for the reasons you might think. Of course we have Wi-Fi. You can sit on the beach checking out your Facebook page while listening to your favorite music through the high quality outdoor speakers. And because of Seabird's Direct TV connection, you'll never miss your favorite game or program. The reason the house is studied by many, is because the home is solar powered, and naturally cooled. The water is supplied by a cistern for rainwater collection. A generator waits on stand-by for emergency use. Green practices at Seabird include recycling and eco-efficient technology whenever possible and it is completely and totally "off the grid." The home on Seabird is naturally cooled with open, wooden louvers and ceiling fans throughout to complement the natural breezes. Offer your kids an incredible, "hands-on" eco-friendly experience by visiting Seabird Key.

Seabird's manager will greet you on our mainland launch site. Bring nothing but your swimsuit!

About the area

Seabird Key is just a 5-minute boat ride offshore Marathon, Florida on the bay side. Seabird's mainland launch site is on a canal for easy access from boat to car. Marathon is in the middle of the Florida Keys and is known for it's great fishing, swimming with the Dolphins, the historic 7-mile bridge, turtle hospital, and Pigeon Key. On your own Island, you are the only residents and total privacy is assured. Stirrup Key, an upscale private residence neighborhood, is just across the bay. Historic Key West, only 45 minutes by car away where you can step back into the life of of Hemingway.

Getting around

Most guests love having a car because a day trip to Key West is typically on everyone's schedule. Also, the drive over the Seven Mile Bridge leading to Key West is breathtaking and should not be missed. Also, it's great to have a car to drive down to the 7-Mile bridge, park and walk the bridge. There is a pedestrian path parallel to the bridge that is not to be missed. Islamorada is a 45 minute drive in the opposite direction of Key West. There is great tropical shopping in Islamorada as well as fantastic restaurants.

Getting here

Most guests to Seabird Key fly into either Miami or Ft. Lauderdale airports. From Miami, Seabird's mainland launch is a 2 1/2 hour drive with easy traffic. If it is a holiday weekend, or if there is congested traffic, it can certainly take a little longer. Flying from Ft. Lauderdale adds approximately 45 minutes to the commute. Flying into Ft. Lauderdale is no problem, but consider that flying out of Ft. Lauderdale will require an early rise from the Island if you get back in time to make the flight. Flying into Key West is great and is only a 1 hour drive to the Island, but often the connection into Key West is problematic. We recommend that you check out all three options...Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Key West. We also recommend that you rent a car which will be useful for grocery shopping, exploring the Keys, and dining out in the evenings if you wish.

Interaction with guest

Seabird's manager, Adam will greet you upon arrival and take you over by boat to the Island. Once you are comfortable with the boat docking techniques and have gotten familiar with all the systems on the Island, he takes his boat back to the mainland and leaves you with the Seabird 19' Boston Whaler for your use during your stay. He is available should you have any issues either on the Island or with the boat. Adam will schedule one visit out to the Island while you are there to check the fuel levels in the tanks, water levels in the cistern, etc. He will do this routine check to make certain that your stay goes very smoothly. Adam typically comes out on Wednesday, but the time can be scheduled at your convenience.

“Awesome!”

We have been Lucky enough to get Married at Seabird Key in 2005 & have been going back for our Anniversary ever since. It is truly amazing place away from everything . It is very well kept outside & Inside .very clean. It is beautiful & worth every penny spend. We are so grateful for all the time we got to enjoy there.Very special Island. The owner is great to deal with & there is also a caretaker available 24 / 7 if need be. Thank you , Deborah ! Tosha SEiBOLD

Owner's reply: Thank you Tosha for the very nice review. We feel fortunate to have an extraordinary couple like you & Jason return year after year to the Island. While island living may not be for everyone, we're happy that you're among those who were looking for total privacy and beautiful surroundings for your wedding, and found that Seabird was the place for you. We love welcoming you back every year! And thank you once again for taking the time to write a review. You're awesome!

“This place is like no other in the U.S.”

Reviewed 25 Feb 2010

This was our second time to Seabird Key and the place is a true Paradise and just when you think it can't get better, the Davidson's added an outdoor kitchen...the pathways and the grounds are maintined so well and the private beach with all the hammocks is just wonderful....it doesn't get better than this!

Owner's reply: Susan & Don, We appreciate the great review. It's taken 30 years to get the Island grounds to where we hoped it would be when we started this adventure. The flowering trees, fruit trees and beautiful gardens...all a result of many, many trips to Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami, FL. The process has not always been easy, but our dream of creating the perfect paradise kept our work fresh and exciting. Thank you for spending your anniversary on Seabird.

“PARADISE FOUND”

Reviewed 2 Feb 2009

The Island was everything a person could ask for in a vacation. Fishing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkling, kayaking, canoing, water skiing. All in the privacy of your own Island. The new outdoor kitchen they have added makes it even more of a paradise.

Owner's reply: George, Thank you for this great review. We were so pleased that you visited Seabird and came away with the feeling that you had made a great choice. We always strive to make Seabird better and better every year. We look forward to your next visit.
