About Plum Island

Plum Island is a coastal barrier island community located on the North Shore of Massachusetts, which lays claim to one of the most unique ecosystems in the world and a beautiful beachfront. It is considered part of four municipalities, including Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley, and Ipswich, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding Plum Island vacation rentals in the area.

Climate

Summertime sees the best weather in Plum Island, and is the ideal time to visit. Typical of New England, the town sees warm summers and cold winters. Temperatures and reach into the mid-80s in July and August, while temperatures are at their lowest around 15 degrees Fahrenheit in January.

Transit

Travel to Plum Island from Logan Airport is easy and takes less than an hour on most days. However, if you get caught in Boston’s rush hour the drive could take closer to two hours. Public transportation to Plum Island (Newburyport) is available, but it will require some skillful maneuvering of the local MBTA service. The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line will put you closest to your destination of Plum Island.

Things to do

If you’re planning on visiting Plum Island to enjoy the beaches then you’ve got the right idea. If you are traveling with children, the best beach is Sandy Point. This beach provides plenty of whirl pools for the kids to catch crabs and starfish in and should keep them happy and occupied for more of the day. Keep in mind that entry to Sandy Point is regulated though, so you’ll have to get there before 8 a.m. to get in on most days. Pack snacks for lunch since this beach is relatively isolated from town. Newbury Beach is a bit more accessible and just as beautiful for a day at the beach.

When you’re not swimming or sunning, Newburyport Whale Watch provides a nice afternoon on the water. If you’re looking for a more active experience, hire a fishing charter with Kelly Ann Charter for a day of hauling in fresh catch or rent a kayak from Plum Island Kayak. They provide rentals 365 days a year. Unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed on the beaches, but Moseley Woods offers some tremendous trails for pups and even has a great jungle gym in town for the kids.

Food & Dining

There’s no shortage of restaurants in nearby Newburyport, with most of them located in the city center on State Street. For a great fisherman’s platter and classic New England seafood fare try Bob Lobster. After a full day at the beach head straight to Plum Island Grille to catch the sunset in the open air environment. Another great restaurant to check out is Park Lunch. Well-known by the locals, it is a great spot to take your kids. The affordable menu is highlighted by their “world famous” chicken fingers and grilled cheese that is sure to leave stomachs full.

It’s important to note that if you’re coming to Newburyport to enjoy a wild, late night scene you will likely leave disappointed, as last call at most places in town is 12:15 a.m. The Thirsty Whale is known to stay open the latest and serves the stiffest drinks. Choose from a variety of Plum Island vacation rentals in the area that put you close to downtown and all of the action during your stay.

Events

There seems to be a festival every weekend in the summer in the Plum Island area, but the largest is the Yankee Homecoming that runs from July 30 to August 7. The parade is fantastic, but if you want a good seat buy a cheap chair at the Richdale downtown and spread out on the side of High Street at least 24 hours before the parade.

Plum Island vacation rentals offer all of the comforts of home in this fantastic beach community. Take the whole family on vacation next summer – you won’t be disappointed!
