Area Information
Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan. It is located near many beaches and small fishing villages to the north (20 - 30 min) the largest of which is Progreso. To the east there is the biological preserve of Celestun, also very close.
Various Mayan archeological sites abound in the area such as Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Labna. there are also natural caves to explore and sink holes (cenotes) of fresh water to swim in.
Dotting the area around Merida are haciendas that have become beautiful restaurants or spas or hotels. These are nineteenth century buildings that have been resored to their past grandeur.
A 4 hour drive and you are in the Riviera Maya, with white beaches and turquoise water.

Our two week stay at Casa Maria was wonderful. Bus line is just around the corner to get to the center of town. Pool and terrace very relaxing and peaceful after a full day of walking, shopping, and site seeing.

This home is located in the thick of Merida day to day living, away from the historical district but still easily accessible. Merida is not a resort area. The history is plentiful. Be prepared to walk! Coming home to the Jewel was a real delight. The pool is a nice touch. Thanks for helping us get settled and making sure we were taken to and from the airport!

We spent a wonderful and relaxing week at casa maria. Although in the middle of a bustling city, once inside and surrounded on all sides by the high walls, you have total privacy and quiet. The house is nicely decorated and comfortable; my wife loved all the pastel shades. The lap pool was surprizing large although a bit cold during our January stay. Although the historic district is not within walking distance, its an easy 5-10 minute car ride(private parking lots in the center were plentiful and inexpensive). And lots of good and inexpensive restaraunts (and shopping) can be found close by. A great alternative to a downtown hotel (as long as like us, you can forego the maid service).

this wonderful house and garden with pool offered up a respite from the turmoil and traffic of the center of town. We loved coming home after a busy day.
