Description of the Milolii vacation home rental
Hale Kai means "Home by the Sea". You will learn the true meaning of "Oceanfront" as you step outside this (non-smoking) home which was built exactly 20 feet from the ocean. Adventurers will love exploring the coast with kayaks which come with the house or enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, fishing, surfing or swimming right outside your door. Less adventurous souls may choose to just relax and enjoy a glass of wine and a good book while sunbathing on their private white sand beach. You will love lounging on the seaside lanai entertained by the locals...spinner dolphins, sea turtles and humpback whales.

Hale Kai is a very serene, relaxing and romantic setting in Miloli'i Beach (Where the Sun meets the Sea). It is conveniently located halfway between Kona and Hawaii Volcanos National Park.

The plantation style home has 3000 square feet of breathtaking views from any part of the house and is nestled on the edge of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by blue water, white sand and some of the most pristine coral reefs in all the islands. The house features two large shaded outdoor living lanais. The upstairs is a wrap around tiled lanai overlooking the tropical fish, dolphins, turtles and whales below. Sleep inside or outside while being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the sea and watching the moon slip into the Pacific.

Hale Kai is an hour drive from the sirens, traffic and stress of Kona proper. Miloli'i is known throughout the islands for its fishing and clear waters. Hale Kai offers some of the most undeveloped stretches of coastline on the Big Island, secret beaches to explore and plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Seasonal whale watching is spectacular. World class snorkeling, scuba diving and sea kayaking is right outside your door. You may also get a chance to swim with the local sea turtles and spinner dolphins, a real treat in itself!
Area Information
Hale Kai is conveniently located halfway between Kona and Hawaii Volcanos National Park. This house is on the sunny side of the island but is also a close drive to the waterfalls and rainforests of Hilo on the wet side of the island. The home is about a 15 minute walk to the nearest beach, and likely as not you may have it all to yourself!

The kayaking, diving and snorkeling are amazing just off the house with some of the clearest and most beautiful coral reefs in all the islands. We swam with dolphins here for the very first time and fell in love with the beauty of our remote location both below and above the surface!

Honomalino Beach is about a mile and a half drive and then twenty minute walk from the home and is described in tour books as one of the great gems of the state. A long crescent of black sand beach backed by the shade of many coconut palms, the water here is very calm and provides both great wading, snorkeling and fishing. Miloli'i Beach Park is also an option a mile and half away and provides great swimming and wading inside a protected coral reef. Honaunau National Historical Park is a short drive and provides a great look into the ancient Hawaiian culture. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less than a hours drive away. And with lava flowing is an amazing "must see".

Restaurants and shopping are located in Ocean View, a 12 mile drive up the road. For sheer ocean beauty, Hale Kai can't be beat.
Attractions within Walking Distance
Hiking into Honamalino Beach will be one of your trip highlights. Where else but here can you find a black sand beach all to yourselves many days a week. A 1.5 mile drive and a 20 minute hike will take you to paradise! You will go back again and again if you want a pure Hawaiian experience.
Nearby Restaurants
Ocean View had a few nice eateries as well as Captain Cook. Kona is of course filled with quality establishments, many right on the water. We recommend the Kona Inn and always hit it up a couple times when we are over. Try to hit it for sunset!
Transportation
Best transportation at Hale Kai are swim fins or kayak paddles!
Best Time of the Year to Travel
If you want quieter water and lots of diving try the summer months. If you want to surf and see whales think deep winter... although its Hawaii, great anytime of year.

Great spot on the coast

If you want a place a little out of the ordinary on the Big Island, Hale Kai is it. A spectacular location at the edge of the lave flow in the Milolii beach community, right above the ocean. Almost feels like you are in the ocean if you are in the lanai when the waves come up. Snorkeling and kayaking right out the door or minutes away. A beautiful house as well, with all the amenities, artistic touches, and well furnished. About 30 minutes south of Captain Cook, so easy accessibility to restaurants and markets. And easy accessibility to south Kona coast attractions, as well as the Kilauea volcano. Very attentive owner and manager. Great getaway!

Owner's reply:

Thank you so much Dave! We so appreciate the fact that you see the raw beauty of Makahiki Point and enjoy the closeness with Mother Nature. Its why we built Hale Kai to start with. Also thanks for your suggestions for adding some things to our "Get Ready" list. I think it will make all guest stays just a little better!

Outstanding Oceanfront Home off the beaten path!

Stayed from June 12 thru the 21st, with the kids and their spouses - 6 in all! All loved the house and it's location, it's decor and ammenities. Road to get to it is a bit challenging, but worth it. Just a great place to unwind or call your home when you travelled the island. Thanks again!

Serene and beautiful

This is my second stay at Hale Kai, but it certainly won't be my last. If you like crowds, traffic, and congestion, don't go there, but if you enjoy peace and quiet, privacy and relaxation, and nature's beauty, check it out, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The house is literally on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and you fall asleep each night listening to the waves. On the most recent visit, we saw many whales close to the shore. Nice sunsets also. The house is on the end of the road, so traffic is minimal, and privacy is ensured. The location allows access to other Big Island features (e.g. Hawaii Volcanos National Park, Waipio Valley) with reasonable-length day trips. It's also fully equipped with most anything you might ever need, and overall space is more than ample. That includes a lanai/porch around the whole house. My two visits were two of the best vacations I've ever had. Seriously. No exaggeration.

Owner's reply:

We love to share our house with other nature lovers! The reason we originally built the house was an amazing 4 hour swim with wild dolphins we had while kayak camping about 3 miles down from the house. We wanted to be able to share that with our own kids and since then we have. There hasn't been a trip over to Hale Kai without tears in everyone's eyes as we pull out of the driveway for the last time. We all are so in LOVE with Hale Kai we just can't get over there enough. My advice... stay as long as you can. You won't regret it!

A beautiful home in a stunning location

Milolii is secluded and peaceful. It is a place for those who want to get away from it all and for those for whom a 35 minute trip is required to get to 'civilization'. The house's location is stunning at the top of a thirty foot high cliff with waves breaking below. It's appointments and furnishings were classy and stylish. The kitchen and its utensils were top calibre as was the tv/sound system. We wish we had far more than the four days we had to stay in this wonderful house and location. Everything promised and more

Wonderful Vacation

January 4, 2010

My guests and I had a wonderful time at Hale Kai. The stay was relaxing and re-energizing for me. The remoteness and rugged landscape was daunting at first but as I realized I didn't really want to travel very often away from the house, it suited me just fine. The pounding surf sounded like it was coming through the wall on the first night but after that it lulled me to sleep. I had similar comments from everyone. The kitchen was great and so well stocked. The only thing that did not work was the ice maker. Danielle was there when we arrived and was a joy to interact with. I would stay here again and will definitely recommend it to my friends!

We had a great stay here- the photos don't really do it justice! The high surf made the ocean unapproachable during our stay, but the ocean view was out of this world. Saw whales from the lanai, gorgeous!!

Dear Mike and Jamie,

You guys are the best. Thanks for helping us out and being our telephone tour guides. We had a great time kayaking and loved exploring the area. Your ideas were wonderful, thanks for sharing directions to some of your secret spots.

We were able to land the kayaks at Okoe Bay and did see some Spinner Dolphins close up. The whales did elude us again but we will be back next year and try again.

My husband and I really want to thank you for having us. The full moon fell on our anniversary this year and in the entire world I don't think we could have found a better place to crack open a bottle of champagne.

We loved how private and secluded the house is. We spent a lot of time in the chaise lounges relaxing. The outdoor lava shower was great...next time we will go kayaking!

Everything was perfect!

Our family had a fantastic time here. Thank you so much. We loved the local artists you showcased and ended up buying some prints in town. Our kids had a ball at Honomalino and Milolii Beach Park.

We caught fish off the property and had them on the grill in minutes. The only problem with Hale Kai is that we ran out of time. Next time we will be sure to stay more than five days. Thanks again.

Mary Barraby

We stayed at Hale Kai for almost two weeks and it wasn't nearly long enough. The water was super clear and we were able to swim with dolphins just down the coast from the house. We really enjoyed our Big Island stay at Hale Kai

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the most fun things to do at Hale Kai?
A: Well, you are right on the water so swimming, snorkeling, fishing, diving come to mind right off the bat but we are also on a wilderness coast so hiking, kayaking are also an option.
Q: What makes Hale Kai so special?
A: Hale Kai is the last house on Kai Avenue and backs up to miles of wilderness coastline. We have watched Spinner Dolphins jumping in the full moon light from the Master Bedroom and dozens of perfect sunsets, even saw the "green flash." You actually will be lulled to sleep by the waves. Every day and night is special!
Q: Why is your location so good?
A: Hale Kai is located midway between Kona and Hawaii Volcano National Park which makes it a perfect base camp for exploring the island. It is also only 20 feet from the sea itself which makes it pretty amazing in its own right.
Q: What is the most amazing thing about staying at Hale Kai?
A: The most amazing thing is really the same reason we built the house. When the wild Spinner Dolphins decide to come and play with you I guarantee it will make your trip. There is simply nothing like it, anywhere, ever.
