Description of the Mt. Desert Island vacation home rental

"If you want to really get away from it all, be on the quintessential Maine Island, with postcard views of Acadia National Park's Mount Desert and stay in a house with Maine character and an artist's flair - this is your spot. Starting the vacation on a mail boat ferry to Great Cranberry Island sets the tone to begin a very special adventure. Laurie provides a small jeep-like vehicle to get about the island to see all of it's charming views and quaint buildings. It's good to be able to get to the grocer's, too. Much of the time we just enjoyed the calm and peaceful surroundings. We picked wild blueberries and made blueberry pancakes, walked down through the woods to the shore, read books and couldn't stop starring at the views. The house really has the feel of old Maine - with the modern needs taken care of! We did bring ourselves off the island to downtown Northeast Harbor to visit the fine shops, art galleries and great lobster rolls! We went to Acadia National Park for some light hikes (you can pick your skill level) and superior views. If we could pick a place to stay in Maine in the summer, it would be at the Cranberry Island artist's Home. p.s. we live in a summer vacation spot but we like to get away to Maine for our break!!!"

The Wadsworth home is a unique house on Cranberry island for it was designed and built by the artist, Charles Wadsworth. It reflects the Frank Lloyd Wright style and fits well into the natural landscape. It's many views of Acadia park are breathtaking especially in the evening when a purple sun is setting behind the mountains. The main room of the house is a massively long living room/music room ...with piano and fireplace. It is delightful to have a fire on a cold evening and for those who love music the piano is kept in tune. The windows look out over the ocean to the mountains of Acadia National Park and the outdoor screened-in sitting porch beyond the living room is a favorite place on warm nights to have a glass of wine and enjoy the mountain view.

The kitchen, recently updated, has a brand new floor, refrigerator, stove and dishwasher but the charming antique cutting block counter is still there as is a wood burning stove. The side kitchen door opens onto another screened-in outdoor eating porch for your dining pleasure.

There are 3 bedrooms; one with a king bed, another with a queen, a kid's room with bunk beds. The master bedroom is new and has massive windows letting in the light and with one side overlooking the stunning ocean view. The bathroom has also been recently renovated. On the basement level is an extra bedroom, and a little half-bath under the staircase.

Our rocky Maine beach is a two-minute walk through the forest. There you can find many sea treasures including glass and shells. In season there are wild blueberries and cranberries to pick and they make great muffins and pies.

No pets or smoking are allowed. There is a washer/dryer for your convenience, and the house comes with a tennis membership, the use of bikes, and a John Deere Gator.
