Things to Do

When vacationers think about the Adirondacks, their first thought might be those relaxing chairs named for this beautiful area of the country. Relaxation is a sport here and the views that seem to go on forever, its reward. But relaxation is not the only thing to do here. The Wild Center opened the Wild Walk, which invites guests to hike along the treetops at the Tupper Lake Museum. Don’t miss Fort Ticonderoga’s Carillon Boat Cruises or the Olympic Sports Complex and Museum in Lake Placid. The Adirondacks are also becoming the place for foodies and craft beer enjoyment with several notable breweries, wineries, and food festivals.  There are 100 delightful towns to explore while you’re here.

Climate

The summers are pleasant with highs in the high 70s and lows in the 50s, making May to August the most popular time to visit the area. If you love winter sports, November to April is a great time to visit but be prepared. Temps are in the teens and single digits. The fall brings beautiful foliage, and smaller crowds, but some businesses are closed at this time.

Events

There are a number of events in this beautiful region throughout the year. June and July bring the Lake Placid Horse Show and the aptly named I Love Barbecue Festival. Fall’s beauty is celebrated at the Old Forge Pumpkin Festival and the Flaming Leaves Festival in October. For the adventurous, don’t miss the Evening Garrison Ghost Tours in October at Fort Ticonderoga. Winter brings a number of winter sports events including the FIBT World Cup Bob and Skeleton at Lake Placid, and the Northeastern Police Ski Championships in Wilmington in March.

Shopping

The Adirondacks are known for their finely crafted furniture. While you’re here check out the jewelry designed by local artisans as well as the local specialty foods like New York maple syrup and artisan cheese selections. Whether you’re visiting boutiques in the area or finding bargains at the Lake George outlets, there are a number of ways to get some retail therapy and bring back a little slice of the Adirondacks with you.

Food

Food in the Adirondacks is experiential and served up in some of the most beautiful locales around. The Plattsburgh Brew Fest allows visitors to sample local brews on the edge of Lake Champlain.
