Description of the Northside vacation villa rental
THE ULTIMATE GETAWAY

The Edge of Paradise is a true gem and a one of a kind tropical getaway villa. Nestled on the edge of world-renown Magen's Bay in St. Thomas, it is a unique combination of charm, luxury and privacy. The seclusiveness and natural beauty of this property are what make it so extraordinary. The property includes approximately five-hundred feet of prime ocean frontage and its own beach, just a walk down the steps. Our villa looks over a pristine coral reef that flourishes in these crystal clear Caribbean waters, teeming with life. There are very few rental homes in all of the Virgin Islands that can compare to our property as a charming and luxurious tropical retreat, with its own secluded beach and reef. As such, it is a very special place for families to unwind and share a memorable vacation.

Area Information
Our views of the stunning waters of Magen's Bay are truly exceptional. Magen's Bay is a treasured Virgin Island nature preserve and, as such, has no hotels nearby and very limited residential development on its shores, particularly its western shore. Magen's Bay Beach is a magnificent natural landmark that stretches for over a mile along the south end of the bay, renown for its white sand and turquoise waters. Behind the beach stands a tropical forest, which gradually rises up a mountain, filled with lush vegetation and fascinating wildlife. This beach was recognized as one of the top ten beaches in the entire world by National Geographic.

The Edge of Paradise sits on the west side of the bay. Our villa is the most proximate residence to Magen's Bay Beach on the western shore, just a short kayak paddle away. Yet, because a dense tropical forest and a rugged rocky shoreline span between our villa and that beach, we are exquisitely secluded. This is just one reason why we believe our location is ideal. In addition, we appreciate that the waters of the bay are calmer and more protected than any others on the Island. This tends to make the water clearer and safer for swimming and snorkeling, especially important when kids are involved. Thirdly, we cherish the beautiful coral reef that thrives along the western side of the bay. This reef is quite isolated and not readily accessible to beach tourists, and so it remains pristine. No other reef exists in the bay; the rest of the bay is predominantly sandy. It is quite uncommon to have a secluded spot where adults and kids can wade out into an ocean that has a colorful and fascinating reef right there to explore, in clear Caribbean waters that deepen very gradually .

Private Oasis

December 5, 2014

As stunning as the pictures of the Edge of Paradise on the website are, the reality is twenty times better! As I spent an idyllic week there, I speculated that this is how Hollywood celebrities must de-stress. If you're looking for a real break, an opportunity to rest and reflect, then this private, secluded oasis has it all. For spectacular views, the Edge of Paradise boasts an infinity pool, a hot tub, and full length balconies overlooking picturesque Magens Bay. To immerse yourself in the flora and fauna of this lush island, walk down to the private pebble beach, marvel at the beautiful coral, snorkel among the colourful fish, and kayak the length of Magens Bay. If you're a foodie, the modern kitchen has all the conveniences, or make use of the impressive barbeque or wood-burning pizza oven (what a treat!) to cook up a storm. Our party of four adults had a spectacular, unforgettable stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the weather like there?
A: It is typically awesome ! St. Thomas has a tropical climate and is generally sunny and warm throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much. Situated on the waterfront on the north side of the Island, we are almost always blessed with a pleasant and refreshing ocean breeze, often referred to as the “tradewind”. Seasonal average temperatures are the following:

Spring: High 86, Low 71

Summer: High 89, Low 76

Autumn: High 88, Low 76

Winter: High 85, Low 72
Q: Should we rent a vehicle?
A: Absolutely. Renting a vehicle is almost a must at our villa, and is strongly recommended, since taxis can be unreliable as well as expensive. Our villa is quite secluded and “off the beaten path”. Getting there requires a drive down a curvy road with some bumps and some steeper sections. We recommend a vehicle with FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE and adequate road clearance, because many roads are not as smooth as those to which we are accustomed. As this is a common concern on tertiary roads across the Island, Jeeps and SUVs are the most popular vehicles on St. Thomas. Remember to keep left when driving!
Q: Is it true that power outages occur on the Island?
A: You should be aware that power outages do occur on St. Thomas and the other Islands, sometimes happening several times a week, for prolonged periods. Our villa is equipped with a powerful heavy duty generator, located away from the house so as not to be heard, with an automatic changeover switch that takes over after 15 seconds with no power. When you consider renting elsewhere, you must consider this. If your rental property does not have a generator, you risk the possibility of being without wifi, television, refrigeration, running water and air conditioning for periods of time, and that could be inconvenient.
Q: Is the villa ecofriendly?
A: Absolutely! We support the conservation of natural resources and the protection of the reef ecosystem. Please do not touch the coral or take any living shellfish or sea fans! In addition, we know that electricity and drinking water are precious commodities on the Island. The villa uses energy efficient appliances, biodegradable soaps, and other green products whenever possible. We have a solar heater on the roof to assist in pool heating. An elaborate system of gutters and downspouts collects rainwater into large cisterns so that it can be filtered and utilized. Lastly, the villa was designed in a way to have extensive cross-circulation throughout the home, via cooling tradewind breezes coming off the ocean. While air conditioning is certainly available, most guests prefer keeping the windows and screened doors open to enjoy the breezes and save energy.
Q: Do we need passports?
A: Even though St. Thomas is a U.S. Territory, passports are strongly recommended even for American citizens, to expedite airport passage. Should you choose to partake in the British Isle excursion we recommend, passports are absolutely required.
Q: What happens if we encounter a problem with the villa?
A: Sometimes we hear horror stories about renters at other villas who have their long-awaited vacation ruined by various problems. We are very confident that this will never occur at Edge of Paradise because of two reasons. First, our villa was described by our home inspector as the best built property he has seen on the Island in his six year career here. Second, our property is managed by Gena and Brian McHenry. They are the most personable, knowledgeable, and responsive people one could ever hope to meet. They live nearby.
Q: Are any other options available to make our vacation even more relaxing and unforgettable?
A: Definitely! We can arrange for an in-home spa day by having a masseus visit you in the villa. Similarly, we can secure the services of a personal chef to make gourmet meals, and a captain to take you on a sightseeing or fishing excursion. We can even combine the two!
