Description from owner

It's vacation time, and if you want to get back to the basics for a good old fashioned North Country family vacation, then this camp on Norwood Lake is just the place for you and your family. And if you want to visit family in the area, this is an awesome place!!

There are only a few weeks left for Summer 2017 -- the week after 4th of July, the week between July and August, and the end of August.

Off the main road but close to town, this cottage is quiet and peaceful! But don't worry - you'll still have all the comforts of modern civilization. You'll have comfortable accommodations, full kitchen, sunny deck and lake front. The house sleeps seven, and you can bring your dog for the stay, too.

The house and its sunny deck face south, toward your private lake shore and dock. You can watch the sun rise with a hot cup of coffee. You can keep an eye on the kids chasing minnows in the sandy shallows. Afternoon brings a picnic on the patio and a boat ride or swim off your dock. (The house has a paddle boat and a canoe, or you can bring your own.) Your grill is ready for dinner, and a campfire waits for sunset and the moonrise over the glassy lake. Life is good.

This recently-renovated house has 900 square feet and sits on a mostly-sunny half acre, with 100 feet on Norwood Lake. It is easy to maintain and a fun vacation retreat.

The house is modern but still rustic enough to be fun. There are three bedrooms upstairs - a big master and two smaller bedrooms - that sleep seven comfortably. (By law, the maximum occupancy is seven people with no exceptions, so keep that in mind.) The largest bedroom has a king sized bed, the next has a full bed and a twin bed, and the third has two twin beds. The upstairs has Pergo floors. The two south-facing bedrooms have terrific views of the lake and A/C units in case of a heat wave.

Downstairs, you'll find all the comforts of home, plus the fun of a lake house. The wood-paneled great room sports a long bank of windows, providing a complete south-facing view of the lake. The spacious deck, with a dining set and propane grill, is perfect for relaxing or entertaining. The full kitchen includes stove, refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, and microwave. The newly-remodeled bathroom is small but beautiful, with a walk-in shower and custom tile.

If you're afraid of going into e-withdrawal, rest assured that you'll have a flat-screen TV, cable, and high speed internet access with WiFi. The cable TV is limited to the networks, but you can still get your fix with the DVD player or by watching your Netflix with the HDMI cable.

The lawn slopes down to the lake shore with a shallow beach walk-in and private dock. A paddle boat and 15' canoe are included, and you may bring your own Jet Ski or motorized boat to tie up at the dock. The public boat ramp is less than a mile down the road on Lakeshore Drive for easy launch.

Beds: 1 King Bed, 1 Double Bed, 3 Twin Beds

About the area

The town of Norwood is just around the corner, with its ice cream stand, diner, and summer concerts on the green. The nearby towns have fast food, as well as some surprisingly eclectic restaurants attracted by the local universities. The town of Potsdam features Clarkson University and Potsdam State University, along with movie theaters, cultural events, riverside parks, and a farmer's market. Massena, the nearest "big city" has a year-round ice rink, small shopping mall, drive-in movies, and the historic Eisenhower Locks. The Norwood Recreational Pavilion recreation area (known to the locals as Norwood Beach) is 1.2 miles down the road. They have a sandy beach, playground ball fields, and a snack bar with bathrooms. The park closes at sunset. The boat launch is another quarter mile past the recreation area. You can dock a boat at the house for the week, but keep in mind, our water is shallow. Route 56 Auto Drive-In Theater (9783 Route 56, Massena, NY) is an actual drive-in movie. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, bug spray, and a boom-box.(The one in the small bedroom may have batteries.) They sell food, but you can bring your own. Turn left on to Route 56 and travel 12 miles toward Massena. The same company owns all the movie theaters in the area including the Drive-In: jscinemas on the internet. With a little more effort, you can visit the Almanzo Wilder house in Malone, the Olympic Ice Arena in Lake Placid, Tupper Lake's Woodsmen's Days, the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, or Uncle Sam's Boat Tours in Alexandria Bay. And you'll still have the rest of the Adirondacks and St. Lawrence River valley left to explore. For more fun activities, check northcountryguide or adirondackscenicbyways on the net. If you have a passport, you can easily cross the bridge in Massena and visit Canada. Upper Canada village, Canada's answer to Williamsburg, is only an hour's drive. Ottawa and Montreal are a day's trip as well. . If you stay close to home or venture out for day trips, this house is sure to give you a vacation to remember. Hometown Cafe (3 North Main Street, Norwood) is the local diner, open from 6am to evening. In summers, it has an ice cream stand out front. The Lobster House (95 South Main St., Norwood) is right where Lakeshore Drive meets Route 56, is a family restaurant – good food, family friendly, reasonably priced. Potsdam has many restaurants that vary in price and fame. On the way into town, you'll see McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Arby's, Domino's, Ponderosa Steakhouse, Further into downtown, you'll find better restaurants. Hot Tamale has gotten rave reviews from our renters, as has Between the Buns which, thankfully, is an upscale burger restaurant. Thai Cuisine is our personal favorite. The Bagelry makes great bagels and coffee. Maxfields is more upscale and lovely, as is the historic 1844 House Bistro. There are other small restaurants along Market Street in Potsdam as well.

“North Country Cottage”

We had a wonderful time at the cottage. Would love to do the same next summer. Cottage was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Caretakers were very willing to answer questions and needs should they arise. Very happy with our decision to rent.

“Relaxing - Quiet - Perfect”

The little cottage on the lake was perfect for our family vacation. The rooms were more than enough for 2 adults with 2 children (21yr and 19yr). The deck was large and had plenty of sunlight throughout the day. Although the back yard is sloped, we were able to catch some sun in the Adirondack chairs and take in the beautiful view of the lake. Grocery store was only 3 minutes away as well as the Lobster House for dinner and Ice cream stand in town. Potsdam was only 10 minutes away and we even took a day trip to Montreal! All in all, a great time.

This was an excellent place to stay. The house was large, comfortable and very clean. Everything you could possibly need was there. The lake was like silk, no weeds and very few rocks. I plan to return!

“Awesome Accommodations!!!”

Reviewed 21 Oct 2012

Some friends and I were originally looking to rent a hunting camp for a hunting excursion to northern St. Lawrence County, New York as this was our first time to the area. However, when we could not find anything, I stumbled across this cottage in Norwood, NY and the rest is history. This cottage is exactly what others have stated. It was a country-style cottage located right on Norwood Pond which is part of the Raquette River. We did not get the chance to fish, but we did see tons of wildlife in the area and we had a great trip. I have heard from many natives that Walleye fishing is great there though. The home very easily and comfortably slept the 6 of us. The first floor has 3 bedrooms with a total of 5 beds. Plus, there is a couch downstairs. Downstairs has a 3/4 bathroom and a common area which is used as a kitchen, dining area and living room. The downstairs has a slate looking tile flooring with tongue and groove used on the walls and ceiling. So, it is quite pretty. There is also a nice deck off the back with a view of the lake. You will also find all the comforts of home at this cottage with all necessary appliances, linens and bedding provided. The owner, Donna Wright, was very forthcoming with information and it has been a pleasure dealing with her. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a quiet place to stay on the water in a quiet neighborhood. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Owner's reply: It was a pleasure having you at the house! Thanks again!!!

“Excellent Cabin ! A+ Super Awesome Vacation !!”

My wife, Barbara and I are originally from Upstate NY and she is from Norwood , NY and I am from Norfolk / ChaseMills, NY. We now reside in Indiana and return back to Northern NY approximately once year. We rented this cabin over the summer and was actually shocked on the ammentities it had with the rental. The owner , Ms. Donna Wright was extremely helpful , courteous and basically a blessing during the process. We had never rented a cabin previously however we did not expect to see everything in the cabin from every type of kitchen utensil , spices, board games, televisions , to fans in each room plus air conditioners that cool the entire camp when needed. A booklet of the rules was supplied and basically it was not needed if you have common sense and respect for other's property. The cabin was clean when we entered , we did stay with our Boxer , Gracie and an extra deposit was required however we received all deposit money back as we left the cabin in the same shape it was when we received it. One can fish off the dock , get this ....they even had fishing poles however we brought our own figuring that they would not be at the cabin. A paddle boat is also supplied and we all used the paddle boat during our stay. The deck is large and the only negative draw back is the parking in the front but there is plenty of room for two vehicles. We loved it ! Everything was great and I cannot express how satisfied we all were. Ms. Donna - Thank you ! So if one wants the peace and serenity on the lake in Northern NY while still being close to all the amentities of town such as Massena and Potsdam etc. This place is Awesome ! Sincerely, Randy and Barbara Phelix

Owner's reply: Thanks to great customers like this- we had a perfect summer!!! Hope to see you again!

“Family Weekend Get Away”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2012

We stayed at this cottage for SUNY Canton's family weekend. We originally tried booking a hotel room, but found they were all booked for that particular weekend. We came across this rental and were pleasantly surprised! This cottage was perfect for us! The three bedrooms allowed each of us to have privacy while sleeping. The cottage was well kept, clean and very cozy. Wi fi was a plus for my kids and husband! There is also a kitchen with everything needed to make meals if desired. We took advantage of that and made a huge Sunday breakfast! The weather was not very cooperative with us, so we were not able to take advantage of the usage of the river or build a fire at the river's edge. We did, however, have an amazing view of the river - and saw a rainbow over it. The drive to SUNY Canton was only about 15 to 20 minutes. There were plenty of places to eat out in Potsdam or on the way to Canton. Grocery stores, laundromats also near by. We would love to rent again and this time, bring out dog - he would LOVE the water! Pets are welcome for a small fee. Check in/out was so easy. And we appreciated check out being noon. We will definitely rent this cottage again - and I even prefer it over a hotel. Highly recommended.

Owner's reply: We appreciate your kind comments and look forward to having you again!

“Great Fun”

This is a wonderful place to stay. We found it very clean and it is easy to keep clean. The natural wood is beautiful along with the slate floors. The yard with the river (lake) is a great place for the family to fish both day and night. There is a nice paddle boat to for a little extra fun. Stores are easy to get to. Kitchen is stocked with everything you need in the way of utensils and pots and pans. I wish we had more time there, but we were busy visiting so many friends as we were there for the Mega Reunion. There is a book that tells you everything you need to know about the cottage. Donna Thank you for allowing us to stay in your summer home. My son was so happy to catch his first Catfish when they went down to the dock at night. Just bring the mosquito repellent. Beautiful place, Natural wood, full kitchen, Lake, boat, Dock, water, fish, family what more can you ask for it was a great vacation!

Owner's reply: It was an absolute pleasure that you rented and even a better erasure to meet you and your lovely family- thanks again!!

“Quiet Family Vacation”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2012

We decided to take a quiet vacation this year, and wanted to go to the Adirondacks. This cottage was close enough that we could drive up a couple of days for hiking, boating and swimming. There were also many hiking trails a lot closer to take advantage of. The scenery in the area is beautiful. At the end of the day, it was always nice to get back to have dinner and relax. The house had everything we needed - just had to stop for groceries. So many stores are close by, that if you did need something, it was easy to get. We spent a couple full days doing activities at the cottage. The family got a lot of use out of the paddle boat, and we had brought our kayaks. It was so easy with the water access right on the property. We caught some fish from the dock, had a few fires and did some swimming. There was not a lot of boat traffic on the river or noise from surrounding homes. That fact helped make the property feel private and secluded. Our dog loved going into the river. It was tough to keep him out when we needed to!! I would definitely recommend this property to others. As a matter of fact, I already have. Thank you, Donna, for sharing your home with us. I just wish we would have had the opportunity to meet you.

Owner's reply: Such gracious guests..left the house SPOTLESS- it is visitors like you that make it worth the while to rent out our little lake house...thanks so much & hope you have a glorious summer!
