Description of the Oaxaca vacation home rental
We offer an early summer deal of $450 a week for dates May 7 to June 1 and other deals for other periods (please inquire) for rent a new, beautiful , furnished 2 bed + study area, 2 bathroom house with a very spacious and cool but traditional design, where you can live in stunning surroundings, both inside and outside, in San Felipe, the most desirable residential area of Oaxaca, and close to both the fabulous local mountains and the historic centre, so you will have the best of everything.

Our newly built house offers a modern kitchen with a new 6 burner stove, big fridge, washer etc an enormous inviting lounge/dining room with high wooden beamed ceiling leading on to a spacious roofed terrace ready to receive outdoor dining with grill, hammock etc downstairs leading on to a garden, two lovely bedrooms, upstairs is a spacious open plan double with study area, from here you wake up to views of the mountains and have the same view from the study area upstairs which has its own sweet terrace, downstairs the twin bedroom (with an extra pull out bed) is next to the terrace. There is a double futon in the enormous high ceiling wooden beamed living/dining room. The house is tastefully decorated with a Mexican touch, there are screens on all doors and windows. Access to the solar heated pool next door can be arranged ($120 per month for 2 hour access 6 days a week).

The house is set back 40 meters from the cobble stoned road so it is peaceful and very safe. There is a well lit private road leading to the gated property where you can park your car inside (we have never had a break in or any other security problem in this or our own house next door). -On the way to the house you pass the local mil, gorgeous donkeys and fresh tortillas being made by our neighbour who will be happy to provide with this delicious local food on a daily basis. The bus into town (which runs 7 days a week) is a stones throw from the house, the stop to the center is in front of the San Felipe del Agua Church and its square and the one coming back is literally at the end of the private road.

In San Felipe itself you will find a useful and charming corner of Mexico with market days on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, other small grocery stores, a local lending library and a 5 star hotel on the corner and its restaurant is one of many in the areas. If you are looking for a long term stay, language and other schools, popular with foreigners, are also within walking distance so a car is not necessary. There are also wonderful walks and hikes in the ecological park or in the mountains nearby.

The house is available for long term visitors who would like to paint/write/relax or immerse their children in the most colorful Mexican culture to learn/improve their Spanish and experience the world in one of the most popular cities in Mexico. Shorter term visitors are also welcome! Visitors with children will enjoy all the extra curricular activities that Oaxaca has to offer, art classes teaching artesanal craft, dance etc.

Please note that a security deposit of $150 for stays of up to a month are needed and $300 for up to 3 months. $20 weekly is paid to the cleaner who comes once a week for a few hours.
Area Information
Our house is situated in San Felipe del Agua, the most sought after residential area of Oaxaca because it offer situated in the mountains yet only a 15 minute ride by car or the local bus (or a half hour walk) into the heart of town and 30 minutes drive to the airport. San Felipe del Agua, which provides the rest of Oaxaca with 60% of its water, has a local park and woods for walking or biking and juxtaposes 5 star hotels with local abodes and you pass snazzy cars and cows and donkeys alike along its cobbled-stoned roads.

In the historic centre you will find among other attractions: The Cathedral of Santo Domingo, Regional Museum, the New Textile and other wonderful museums, fantastic artesanal markets, the Zocolo or central park and further afield, Monte Alban, Mitla, Zaachila and Yagul. there is also a lot of ecotourism available with day, overnight or longer getaways.

There is an excellent language school (Amigos del Sol) walking distance from the house.

According to Travel and Leisure magazine, Oaxaca is one of the 10 top destinations. This is not surprising for Oaxaca has so many things to offer: the charming colonial town of Oaxaca offers rich culture, uplifting architecture and a spring-like climate. Lagoons, caverns and waterfalls are within easy reach of the city, as are pre-Columbian ruins and Tlacolula's Sunday market. Visit the hot springs at Hierve el Agua or embrace nature at the vast tree of El Tule. DÂ?a de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, sees the city at its most colorful. Those with a sweet tooth shouldn't miss Mina Street, known as Chocolate Street because of its chocolate makers. There is also a lot of cultural activity: Museums, Archaelogical sites, Music, handicrafts, gastronomy, art, traditions, festivities, also has hiking, horse riding, bird watching, para-gliding, summer camps and much more.

We are a British/Mexican couple who have lived in San Felipe for the past 14 years and are therefore useful resources in helping you to find your feet and make the most of your stay. The house we offer is our second home. Sergio is an anthropologist and musicologist. Judith is a clinical psychologist, anthropologist and painter. She adores Oaxaca for the great painting themes it offers. Sofia and Olivia our two wonderful daughters are respectively 16 and 11 years olds.

Please be sure not to generalise travel advisories about Mexico. Oaxaca is pretty safe despite problems in other areas of the country. Our house is also extra safe owing to its location. We ourselves have never encountered any risk in all the years we have been here.

The flat weekly rate of $595 is for all times except for holidays including Day of the Dead, Xmas, New Year, Easter and Summer vacations (see rate section for this).

We also ask for a fully refundable security deposit which varies according to length of stay. We also ask for payment in full to secure the house unless arranged otherwise.

Lovely Stay at House in San Felipe

July 23, 2014

We just visited Oaxaca and had the opportunity to stay in this lovely home in San Felipe. It's slightly off the beaten track, which makes it quite perfect . If you are looking for a quiet and tranquil visit this will be the place for you. It's perfect for those traveling with or without a family. The center of Oaxaca is easily accessible by bus in 15 minutes. The owners are friendly and very knowledgeable about what the area has to offer.

Perfect little home in Oaxaca

September 26, 2012

We have just returned from an incredible month in this beautiful house. The house is spacious and comfortable and the location is ideal. The house is situated down a long driveway off the cobblestone road. This means the only noises you hear are those of the local roosters, crickets and occasional thunderstorm. Yet the bus runs by about every five minutes headed to the city center and is a direct, easy ride. You have the best of both worlds, the quiet, remote and leafy village surroundings with lovely views but all the convenience of the city center just a short ride (and 5.5 pesos) away. We had our two young children with us and it was truly ideal. The kids loved the private swimming pool. They became friends with the neighbors (and all the neighborhood animals) and were able to run free and unsupervised in a way they can’t even at home. We felt totally secure and safe in Oaxaca and in San Felipe del Agua. My husband was working during our stay. He had three laptops and lots of other valuable high tech equipment in the house and we never worried about security (and wifi connections worked well) . From the bus drivers and cab drivers going out of their way to help us find certain locations, to the shop owners, market stall sellers and most especially Judith and Sergio and their wonderful daughters, we have never met kinder, more helpful people anywhere we have travelled. We visited ruins and villages, markets and artist studios, walked the streets in the late evenings, attended fiestas and performances in town. In every situation we were welcomed, treated with great kindness and overwhelmed by the generosity and humor of the Oaxacan people. Judith, Sergio and the darling Oli are the perfect landlords and neighbors. They are truly warm and outgoing people willing to offer advice and suggestions if you need them, allowing plenty of privacy and space if you want it. We simply cannot recommend this home highly enough and we cannot wait to return. We are homesick for our “home away from home” and lovely life in Oaxaca.

Authentic Mexico

May 18, 2012

In planning for our second long trip to Oaxaca, Mexico we decided we would try to find a home which had enough space for ourselves, for an art studio areaand a quiet study area, a well equipped food preparation area, a secure yard for our small dog (must love dogs), access to both walking in the hills and transportation to the historic district and an inviting outdoor terrace area. We wanted our visitors to have their own bathroom (and bedroom!) We found this property appeared to have all of those features and many more. The articulate reviews from others who came before us do not exaggerate. We loved the layout and space of the house, the cobblestone gated drive in area, and most especially the terrace. We learned that the bedroom on the main floor was a perfect place for a siesta in the afternoon….cool quiet and deliciously comfortable. Even features like the outdoor lighting and plugs allowed one to work on the patio outside day and night. Our guests enjoyed the privacy of their own bathroom adjacent to the bedroom and the comfort of the beds. The cool nights of Oaxaca are wonderful in the winter months. The people we encountered everywhere were friendly and gentle. We became well known visitors when we passed through the barrier to the mountain rode where we walked our dog earning us a daily smile and friendly wave. The lady selling vegetables at the market was always patient with my lack of vocabulary and helped me along. For those thinking about driving: Our three month visit was nearly sabotaged by concerns about driving through the notorious northern border areas, but after research with friends who live there full and part time, we took a cautious approach and travelled on cuotas ( quality toll roads) always in daylight, and made border crossings by mid morning through a recommended crossing not located in a border town. We also researched all required documents for crossing with a pet and an automobile and we were well prepared with documentation, lots of copies of our originals, prepaid Mexican Car Insurance and lots of information from friends about the process. The trip was safe and enjoyable in both directions for us. With the popularity of eco tourism, we believe this long term rental provides a truly authentic Mexican living experience where we had a sense of being part of the community while still having the safety net of Judith, Sergio and their lovely daughters to help those of us challenged with the language and

Loved it so much we are returning

March 7, 2012

The house in San Felipe is just about perfect! Far enough out of town to be quiet (excluding the perpetual sounds of Mexico: dogs barking, music playing, roosters crowing and fireworks going be found anywhere). We felt totally safe. Close enough into town that we could hop the bus directly into the center of things and be there (when we didn't run into a parade) in about 20 minutes. If that was too long to wait, or we were going a bit off the route, a quick taxi ride (usually about 40 pesos) took us where we wanted to go. The nearby market on Tuesday, Friday and Sat was perfect for stocking up on papaya, different varieties of bananas, avocados, etc. Several tienditas are very close as well. We hope Bizmilla, a nearby restaurant that is very good, survives the construction on Hidalgo. If you are looking to be in the center of things, this is not your best choice; if you are looking to be comfortable, quiet, and convenient -- this works extremely well. We checked out another house: closer into town but not on a bus route, not close to a regular outdoor market, on a hill, etc. It's easy to think closer is more convenient which isn't necessarily true. for the house itself. It is truly lovely. When we arrived, my husband wondered..."ok. This is where the owners live. Where do we stay?" It was THAT nice. The house is thoughtfully designed so the upstairs is roomy and private, which served us well when we had guests staying in the downstairs bedroom. My husband set himself up with his computer upstairs; I was downstairs. We both had wifi access. It was perfect. We loved having the washer and the "solar dryer" so conveniently located. For a variety of reasons we actually spent quite a bit of time in the house rather than poking around Oaxaca and couldn't have been in a more pleasant, sunny, setting. Do bring house slippers and something cozy to wear if you are there in the gets a bit crispy. But then again, it stays nice and cool even when the day heats up. Perfect. Judith's lovely art decorates the walls, the high ceilings add to the sense of space, all very well done with an eye both for aesthetics and convenience. And now for the best part: our hosts. You basically couldn't ask for better ones. The perfect balance between being totally available to help and extremely careful and respectful of our privacy. And really really really NICE! Bottom line: We reserved again for this coming fall!

Judith and Sergio's house is a lovely oasis that is still close enough to take advantage of all Oaxaca City has to offer. They are wonderful hosts: quick to respond to any issues, great neighbors, but also respecting your privacy. The house is beautifully designed and comfortable. My boys (15 and 12) thoroughly enjoyed taking Spanish lessons down the street at the Instituto Amigos del Sol, and Judith helpfully suggested some summer camps they could attend as well. The pool and occasional companionship of Sergio's and Judith's friendly, mature daughters was icing on the cake! I know that images of the drug war dominate foreign papers' coverage of Mexico. This is mostly in the north and in President Calderón's home state of Michoacán. The drug war is not, however, happening to any great extent in Oaxaca -- certainly no more so than in some U.S. cities, and considerably less in many cases. We felt very safe in Oaxaca with the children and highly recommend this is a lovely place from which to learn about Mexico and Mexican culture.

Writer's Retreat

October 12, 2011

We were making our third trip to Oaxaca, our favorite city in the world. We are both writers and wanted to come for a month this time, rent a little house, and have time to write and settle into the community. We were lucky enough to come across the home offered by Judith and Sergio, and it was perfect! We had the privacy of a lovely comfortable house tucked away down a little lane and the presence of Judith and Sergio next door, always eager to answer a question, make a suggestion, hook us up with a driver, or just chat. A small stroll away was the cremeria, a tiny store that somehow had most of what we needed. Across the street from the cremeria was the corner where busses and taxis are easily obtained for a short ride to a regular grocery or the Zocalo or the hotel where the busses leave regularly for the run up to Monte Alban, the most beautiful and easy ruin these ruin-weary travelers have ever seen (we have gone there every time). Some evenings Judith arranged for very inexpensive locally prepared dinners to be delivered to us. Most memorable were the chicken mole and the chiles rellenos. She also hooked us up with Gabriela, a lovely young woman with excellent English, who took us at Judith’s suggestion to the ruins of Yagul with it’s stunning view of the Oaxaca valley where we were the only visiters, and the rug making town of Teotitlan (take a private driver there rather than a tour and avoid the stops and prices set up for tourists). We are so glad we came across the perfect little oasis of this house and the friendship of Judith and Sergio, and we are already fantasizing about our next visit.

Relax in San Felipe

July 18, 2011

We stayed in this San Felipe house for one week with our children, who are 22 and 19. It was a beautiful setting, with a veranda outside and an attractive yard. The bedrooms and beds were all quite comfortable, the kitchen well stocked with pots, pans, juicer, and blender, plenty of cups, plates, bowls, serving utensils, and happily with a gas stove. There were also interesting guide books with lots of information about Oaxaca and Mexico City. We appreciated having internet availability! At various times we walked from the center of town to our apartment (about an hour walk), took a bus, or a cab. In all instances we felt very safe, and also felt very safe and welcomed in Oaxaca in general. Judith and her husband were very friendly and accommodating.

Fantastic House!

August 30, 2010

We spent a week in this beautiful house with comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen, stunning bathrooms, great showers and outside patio area. The house is located in San Felipe and is easy to get into the centre of town either by bus or taxi. It felt like such a treat being surrounded by beautiful mountains and living next door to a family who made homemade delicious tortillas! An added bonus was the heated pool which we indulged ourselves in early in the mornings and later in the evenings. The family who own the property are incredibly helpful and offer you lots of useful information about Oaxaca City and surrounding areas. We would highly recommend staying in this beautifully designed house full of Mexican art work, open space and light. We didn’t want to leave!

Wonderful Oaxacan Visit

June 2, 2010

We had a very enjoyable month in Oaxaca City, living in this attractive, comfortably-furnished home. We appreciated the good beds, the well-equipped kitchen, the patios, and the large covered verandah where we enjoyed dining and reading. This new well-maintained home is located high up in the foothills of the San Felipe suburb with lovely views of the countryside, distant mountains, and the sprawling city in the valley below. The location is ideal for walks into the countryside, to the local market, the church, and small local shops. Bus service is two blocks away for rides downtown, where there are many great museums, churches, markets and arts and crafts shops. This house and surroundings were especially appealing to us. We always felt safe here, as we did in all of the Oaxacan area. We traveled extensively throughout the valley and found the people and area delightful. All in all, we had a great experience last winter and hope to return to this home in the future.

Lovely home in safe, picturesque surroundings

May 18, 2010

This beautiful house in the friendly village of San Felipe del Agua, just four miles from historic Centro Oaxaca, was our home for a full month, and we hated to leave. The information and descriptions in this VRBO listing are perfectly accurate, yet this place is even better than the photographs convey. The house is beautifully designed and well maintained, and the owners couldn't have been more helpful, yet afforded us privacy. The solar heated pool--heaven! I would (and have) recommeded this property to friends and family, both to couples (young and old) and families with children or teens. While there, we fell in love with Oaxaca, its gentle people, culture, cuisine and of course the Zocolo and historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We felt perfectly safe the whole time. Getting around is easy with inexpensive taxis and buses that run continuously. Hiring a driver to explore nearby craft villages, markets and the mountains is fun and inexpensive. Exploring our own village and hiking the hills was a pleasure any day. Everyone we met was helpful and patient (if bemused) with our fledgling Spanish (We attended a good language school within walking distance) but I have to admit it was great to have the Zurs we could turn to in English. Before our month was up, we were making plans to return to this special place.
