Description of the Oaxaca vacation home rental
Casa Palomita, our colorful two-bedroom two-bath home, is large and spacious and has been fully renovated to make your stay comfortable. The kitchen is open and tiled with beautiful talavera hand-made cereamic tiles, a new Bosch stove/oven, and hand-made cabinets. Mexican tiles cover the floors throughout. Both bathrooms are tiled with Talavera and have walk-in showers. Bedrooms are on opposite sides of the house, so privacy is optimal.

Includes washer and dryer, fully-equipped kitchen, weekly house cleaner, and 2 Mexican cell phones. Guests may make unlimited house phone calls to the United States. Everything is new in the house, including plumbing, electricity and appliances. House is fully screened and each room as a ceiling fan. Sheets and towels are 100% cotton.

Relax in our hammock or outdoor table and chairs near the hand-crafted limestone fountain in the patio and listen to the birds from the woods next door.

In the studio apartment, our friend lives onsite to help you with any problems that might arise and to help orient you to the house and to getting around the city. She shares the same entry way but, other than to clean and communicate with guests, the patio is exclusively used by guests. Your privacy is always respected.
Area Information
Casa Palomita is located at the end of two private streets in the beautiful Colonia Xochimilco, so it is quiet and peaceful. It is just a few easily-walked blocks to town and the many sites you will want to visit.

On one side of Casa Palomita is a wooded area and on the other sides are quiet residential homes. The house is secure with a wall that surrounds the property, wired electronic security, a doorbell intercom, and an onsite manager.

Once you book a stay, we will send you a "Welcome to Casa Palomita" booklet that will help you prepare for your trip and plan your time at Casa Palomita.

Casa Palomita Delight

November 29, 2016

This spacious two bedroom caught me by surprise. Every detail meticulously taken care of. The home is located on a quiet safe steet closed off at the end. It is walking distance to the center of town and near a main road that gets you in and out of Oaxaca. The home is a delight. Spotless with all the conveniences in abundance (dishware, utensils, cabinet space, washer dryer, firm bedding, lots of pillows and clean linings, full stove, microwave, oven toaster, coffee grinder, etc). Tasteful artwork, traditional Oaxacan carpets, private spaces, two full bathrooms with plenty of fresh towels of all sizes, patio furniture, fountain, with authentic artesian Oaxacan art. You are in your own little world reading or outside. The interior lighting creates a beautiful ambiance in the evening and indirect sunshine brightens up the living room during the day.

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Oaxaca, renewing old friendships and making new ones. Your home was a highlight for us. It is so gorgeous, comfortable, quiet, soothing and a true home away from home. Our stay coincided with the "SuperMoon" and every night light from the moon would pour through the skylights onto our bed. We felt a connection to the Zapotecs and their respect and worship of the moon. Your "Welcome to Casa Palomita" guide is fantastic and so helpful, as was the book "Oaxaca Tips". Lu was very helpful. We look forward to another visit in the future.

From the first night I arrived very late, Maria made we feel welcome and warm in her aesthetically elegant and colorful guest house. I enjoyed the spirit of her connection to Oaxaca and her rich network of connections and friendships which she graciously shared. I was with three others who all felt the same camaraderie. A sheer delight.

Second time around as good as the first -

October 31, 2016

My second time around spending a month at Casa Palomita was mid-September - mid-October. And, as was the first stay a couple years ago, it was nothing but pleasure. The location is excellent, in a quiet and historical neighborhood a 20 minute walk from the zocalo. The house is beautifully designed and furnished (that's an understatement), including a fully furnished kitchen; Lu, the on-site manager, is delightful (that's an understatement) - always helpful, never intrusive. (Just prior to this visit, I had experienced a small health scare; however, I was confident that if I had any problems while at la casa, Lu could cope.) One begins to feel a part of the neighborhood, greeting neighbors, buying basics at the local tienda and nearby market. Even the noisily protective local dogs down the street get to know you and just lift an eyelid when you pass. La Casa is a perfect haven to awake to bird song, to return to tranquility at the end of days exploring, or, if one is blessed with enough time, to just enjoy the ambiance of the house, its art, its colors, its comforts. I hope to return!

Maria -Casa Palomita was perfect for us. Such a beautiful home in a relaxing setting, and an easy walk to the many interesting sites in the city. We also hired Roberto Gavidia to drive us on trips to nearby villages, and I feel that we got much better tours with him as our guide than we would have from a regular tour company. If and when we, or friends, need a place to stay in Oaxaca, we will definitely keep Casa Palomita in mind. Thank you for making it available. It is truly a great place to stay.

I have been visiting and studying Spanish in Oaxaca since the late '80s and this year rented Casa Palomita for my six weeks stay. It is at the end of a dead end street so there is no traffic noise. But it's an easy walk to most everywhere. The property manager Lu lives on site and was very helpful, though I was rarely aware of having her there. The house is fully furnished and has lovely artwork, and the kitchen has everything needed, assuming you aren't always out taking advantage of Oaxaca 's wonderful restaurants. The front courtyard is lovely, with gardens, a fountain and large hammock! My granddaughters spent most of their time there! And having once a week housekeeper and a washer/dryer made my stay very convenient. For anyone considering a trip to Oaxaca, I would definitely recommend this property! And any concerns about safety in Oaxaca are not necessary. The media has totally overblown the situation there. Although the zocalo is currently filled with tents, tarps and temporary vendor stands, it certainly isn't a dangerous place! Just not the beautiful plaza that it should be! Enjoy your stay in beautiful Oaxaca at the lovely Casa Palomita!

Oaxaca stay

April 22, 2016

We found the house just as charming as advertised and very well equipped. Ellen did mention that the doorway to the little patio where the laundry is located could also use a pull down shade to help keep the heat out during the day but that is a very minor defect and I only mention it because you asked if there was anything that we could suggest. We would love to return, perhaps in a slightly cooler month. I chose April because I am still working part time for a school district and it is my spring break. Lu was an absolute angel and we very much appreciated her help during our stay. Also we did hire Don Vidal several days and he was also a delight. Such a nice person and as you said very knowledgeable and helpful. One day he took us to the centro de abastos and guided us around to help us find the things we were looking for...no small task in that warren of puestos!! Your guide to the house and Oaxaca is impressive and was very useful, thank you. We took a couple of cooking classes, one in Oaxaca and one in Teotitlan del Valle. Alma de mi Tierra and El Sabor Zapoteco, both of which we would recommend heartily to your other guests. Thank you once again for sharing your lovely house and local knowledge with us, it was all really a wonderful experience.

It is a delight to return each year to Oaxaca. No better feeling than leaving the winter in Boston at noon, and being welcomed to Casa Palomita by Lu that evening. This year, our fifith at Casa Palomita, we spent six weeks in Jan-Feb. Every year Maria and Lu add some pleasing new artiistic touches--this year, a new cactus garden in the patio. Oaxaca retains its charms as a wonderful winter destination, and Casa Palomita is the perfect place to stay.

I absolutely loved staying at Casa Palomita. Everything was completely thought out. The layout of the house was perfect for having guests come down and stay. I told my friends I would love to duplicate the layout in my retirement home. Vidal is a sweet man. We used him often and he came over a few nights for intercambio or help with his homework. Thank you for that introduction. Lu was great--very unobtrusive but really helpful with any questions I had. I would rent your place again in a heartbeat. I already looked at this year's availability and there are not a lot of openings because the place is so great!

We loved our time in Casa Palomita. It truly is beyond compare as far as we are concerned. We were astounded at the quality of the appointments and good taste of the owner. The kitchen was completely functional, it lacked nothing. The house is a gorgeous restoration and extremely comfortable. Lu ( the caretaker) is such a sweet, hardworking young woman with a great sense of humor. She was really helpful. Also Flor amazed me with her energy. Wish I could have someone as good clean my home. We are thankful to the owner for making such a lovely place available.

We loved our stay in Casa Palomita. The house is gorgeous with beautiful tile work. Lu, who lives on site, was great and we loved exploring Oaxaca and the surrounding areas. We took the cooking class from Pilar, which was wonderful. There are so many wonderful tours, restaurants, and galleries, so give yourself time to explore Oaxaca. Maria was always prompt in responding to all of our questions and all payments were handles very professionally. I highly recommend!

We were very comfortable in Casa Palomita and I can't think of anything to make us more comfortable. It is so pretty and gives us pleasure to be there. Nice to have the table covered with glass and wonderful to have such a well stocked kitchen where we could really cook. It is a great place to share as the two bedrooms, each with private bath, are at opposite ends of the living space, making them very private. Thanks for providing such a lovely accommodation.

I came to Casa Palomita with my family (2 girls ages 5 and 3), husband and mom to visit my in-laws who live in Oaxaca. This was the perfect place for our stay as it was great for families looking to hang out and enjoy the city. The house is beautifully decorated and we were all in love with the magenta facade! The house is located in a very quiet neighborhood but perfect walking distance to everything. The Pachote Organic market on Fri/Sat is not to be missed and if traveling with little onea the nearby children's library is a must-see. We loved the hammock outside and took advantage of the amazing kitchen too, cooking almost all our meals there. Lu onsite was always helpful and informative and we really appreciated her. We will definitely be back!

We've just returned from staying at Casa Palomita, one of the best places I've ever stayed! So beautiful, comfortable and relaxing. Great location with a short walk to Santo Domingo. We enjoyed the Guelaguetza festivities immensely including the parades, the Tamale and Tejate festival, mezcal festival and all the artisan stalls. I could have filled a dozen suitcases with tapetes and alebrijes, and clothing! A visit to the Tule tree and Tlocalula Sunday market were memorable too. Dinner at La Pitiona restaurant was super! The Cultural Museum adjacent to Santo Domingo is a world class museum and the treasures from Monte Alban fascinating. We had already visited the World Heritage site on a previous visit and it isn't to be missed! We cooked in most every meal and the kitchen is well laid out. The Pachote market nearby altho small the day we were there was great! We also enjoyed going to the textile museum altho I was disappointed there was no representation of tapetes. It was such a treat to return each day to the serenity and beauty of Casa Palomita. Muchas gracias Maria for providing such a lovely house to call home even for a short time! Ann, Jen, Sam, Paloma and Sadie Oh and if you have children, the children's library nearby was great fun for the girls.

That there was more than one Casa Palomita! Because the property is almost always booked! We were fortunate that there was a week open before Guelaguezta which was perfect to get the flavor of Guelaguezta without all of the crowds. Our week was a "working retreat" and the patio was a perfect environment to be creative. It was quiet and we could use the sliding doors as our work space. The house had everything we needed and more! It was less than 15 min walk to the Santo Domingo church. Lu was helpful. Dialing to the U.S. worked perfectly once I knew that I needed to dial 001 first! The only tiny challenge is that drivers really have a hard time finding it. One driver suggested to add "4" to the Privado Bolanos Cacho because that is what is on the street sign. We are considering spending several months in Oaxaca in 2017 and checked the availability.. it is already booked! This place is a real gem so snatch up a week when you can!

We loved staying in Casa Palomita; it's perfect for 2 couples. The living area and patio are open and spacious and the kitchen is easy to use. The bedrooms are far apart so there's lots of privacy. Everything provided is the best quality: sheets, towels, kitchen items. We love being surrounded by the beauty of the house and folk art. The house is an easy walk to the Centro and is in a very nice neighborhood. Don Vidal, the recommended taxi driver/tour guide is a marvel. Very kind, knowledgeable and helpful. He really made our trip special.

Casa Palomita is more than a home a way from home, it's a slice of paradise. Easy walking distance to everything (and Maria provides an excellent "handbook" to get you oriented), Casa Palomita not only boasts the perfect location but comes complete with nearly every amenity a traveler could imagine needing. Lu, the caretaker, is attentive and welcoming, and helps ensure that every part of your time at Casa Palomita exceeds expectations. We feel so fortunate to have spent a week getting to know an amazing city while staying at Casa Palomita!

Maria, My husband and I are sitting at LAX waiting for our flight home. In talking about the highlights of our trip to Oaxaca, Casa Palomita is clearly on top. What a lovely home you've created, both architecturally and arts-wise. You have an amazing eye for colors and textures; it was truly a feast for our eyes. It also reinforced our interest in finding several artisans my friend and I had researched, which resulted in some wonderful personal connections as well as beautiful art to bring home. Thanks so much for opening your Oaxacan home to us. It is a very special place. Elaine

Hola Maria; Sorry, Gringo warp time of being in Oaxaca  Your home is amazing! I loved seeing the photos of the progress in construction or more like 'resurrection' that you did. We also loved the interior decorating that was done... the artwork really gave us the feeling of being someplace unique. There is nothing that could have been done to make it any more comfortable or relaxing. The only thing I questioned Lu about was the length of time it took for the Kitchen sink to receive warm water to wash dishes...the far shower in the next room over seemed to have hot water faster! It's not something I would think can be done any different as the water flow was good at the kitchen sink. Maybe it's because our water heater is about 5 feet from our kitchen and I'm spoiled by the short time of delivery. The only problem we had is the four pounds we gained while in Oaxaca! Thank you for putting your home out there for vacationers. The price is a real bargain. I am glad you found everything well cared for by us and if we were the type of people who would have thought of taking something that didn't belong to us...we probably would have made off with Lu, she was a great help and we will miss her smile and peaceful demeanor. You have a dedicated caretaker in her.

Casa Palomita was even better than my expectations, and my expectations were pretty high (based on the website and recommendations)! As Oaxaca is one of my favorite places on earth, I rented la casa for the month of October as a gift to myself for my 70th birthday. I invited various friends to come down to share at different times during the month. I have spoken with several of these friends and we cannot come up with even one complaint or suggestion for improvement. The location is excellent, in a quiet and historical neighborhood a 20 minute walk from the zocalo. The house is beautifully designed and furnished (that's an understatement), Lu, the on-site manager, is delightful - always helpful, never intrusive. We didn't cook much (only guacamole and margaritas most evenings, and the occasional breakfast), but the kitchen is fully equipped. Plenty of hot water. Pochote Market - just a couple of blocks away - on Fridays and Saturdays, a great place for breakfast, buying good breads, goat cheese/yogurt, flowers, and visiting (and buying from) the weavers who do their magic on the way up to Pochote. The information provided at la casa is excellent. For restaurants, Itanoni (a pleasant walk to the nearby neighborhood of Reforma) was a favorite, as was La Quinque just on the way towards the zocalo). We generally took public buses to nearby sites (Lu is a good resource for this) so did not use drivers, but Don Vidal provides an excellent and reliable taxi service for the airport, etc. In summary, my entire experience with renting and enjoying Casa Palomita, from beginning the process with Maria to saying adios to Lu, was nothing but pleasant. My only concern is whether or not it will be available for my next visit to Oaxaca!

We could only think "Casa Palomita is a piece of heaven!" Our idea is to clone Casa Palomita and everything Maria does to make it work. It was so helpful to arrive and have Lu great us, to have the basics of coffee, milk and eggs at hand. Having the list of restaurants was perfect. We found a great internet cafe just down the plaza/walking block from Quinque (yum) restaurant, at the corner of that little Quinque street and Garcia Vigil--a good way to avoid cell phone charges from the U.S. Your amazing documentation yielded new, helpful information every time we consulted it. We shared it with our visiting friends and recommended your recommendations to visitors we met in Mexico City headed for Oaxaca! We are just so grateful to you for offering us such a lovely home in Oaxaca. We could see by the comment book that so many people return to Casa Palomita. It's soothing, welcoming, warm, reassuring, lovely, spacious, well appointed and thoughtfully created. We loved it so much.

We are truly grateful to have found such a comfortable home for our first visit to Oaxaca. The location made it easy for us to walk into the center of town easily and after a long day of sightseeing coming back to enjoy the quiet patio with the soothing sounds of the water fountain was just perfect! The entire process to rent the home was very quick and efficient with Maria answering our emails right away. We had a good time in Oaxaca and your home was part of the reason. It is a lovely and comfortable home. (I had a bit of a hard time with mosquitos for a few days, but I bought some creamy repellent that finally kept them away from me and I was able to sleep much better) The location of your home was convenient for our walks to town. We enjoyed our interaction with your manager Lu. She is very sweet and has a lovely personality. Our compadres came to visit us and they also loved your home. We had a great time on our trip to Oaxaca! Your house is beautiful! We loved staying there during our time in Oaxaca. Lu was great! She was very helpful throughout our stay. We loved the proximity to the zocalo. We walked most days to the zocalo, and the days we didn't feel like walking, it was very easy to catch a taxi by the medical clinic. Most days I went out for an early walk around the neighborhood and made my daily stop at the panaderia across from the clinic to bring back pandulce for our breakfast. We loved the organic market just up the hill from your house. I can't of anything that would have made our stay better. You have pretty much thought of everything to make a stay at Casa Palomita very comfortable, cell phones, umbrellas, free calls to the US, washer/dryer, kitchen amenities, drinking water, wi-fi, I could go on and on! And the house itself is so beautiful We loved how you have decorated the interior and exterior. We contacted Don Vidal and he took us out on 3 days and then to the airport on our last day. Although Laura (Jesus's wife) doesn't speak Spanish and I speak very little, he provided a great experience. He has been taking English classes so we helped each other and had Jorge and Jesus to help translate. Jorge and Jesus took a cooking class from Pilar; they had a great time. We look forward to staying there in the future!

We really enjoyed our trip to Oaxaca and our stay at Casa Palomita. It has all the comforts of home and has been kept in top condition. Lu was wonderful. We would not have been able to find places or enjoy our stay as much without her. My husband chipped his tooth while we were there and Lu arranged to have him see her dentist who was great. He even went back for some more work. The furnishings and linens were very comfortable. The only thing which could have been improved upon (for us anyway) were the pillows on the bed (we only used the master bedroom). They were a bit flat and lumpy for our liking. But I know everyone has different tastes in pillows. I often slept with a second pillow which helped somewhat. That is the absolute only thing that I could think of that could be improved on. Everything was really great and we enjoyed our stay so much. Thank you so much for your attention to detail. It truly shows...

Maria Martinez

Owner's reply:

Dear Diane,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. Lu emailed me last week to tell me that she purchased some new pillows for the beds, so that's good and sounded like they were really needed. Next time you stay with us, please feel free to bring these types of things up as you notice them to me or Lu directly so that we can make sure you are comfortable right away. Kind regards, Maria

We totally enjoyed our visit to Casa Palomita. It was perfect for us (two couples, two-week stay). The on-site manager Lu is a delight, and was very helpful to us as was the information booklet provided by the owner. We felt safe in the house and in the community. We used Vidal to go to Monte Alban and to the airport - so professional and polite. The most enjoyable surprise was hearing the funeral music at the church next to El Tule. It was beautiful. And we loved the little Organic Market at the St Thomas church in Xochimilco. The people were so nice and it was not so overwhelming as the big markets. The produce we bought from there was the best that we had. Fresh guacamole every evening with our wine!

Thanks Evelyn. I also love the neighborhood organic market, "Pochote." The walk is so nice and you get to hear the looms clacking and sit in the courtyard of the church and have breakfast. So sweet a market. Glad you enjoyed your stay, I hope you return and return. Maria

Dear Maria We are home and we are missing Oaxaca and our beautiful home in Oaxaca so very much. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your serene and soulful home; we loved every minute of our stay. Lu was wonderful to us. We managed to cook quite a bit in your magnificent kitchen and enjoyed listening to some of your CD's. The books on Oaxaca were very helpful and I even managed to read one of your novels even though we were very busy exploring the surrounding valleys and streets of Oaxaca! Maria, Cliff and I hope to return to Oaxaca; perhaps we will meet you there some day? We have very special memories of people and places and now, at home, we look at our few pieces of pottery and beautifully woven shawls and just miss the mountains, villages and people. We are making an effort to improve our Spanish so that next visit we can talk more to Oaxacans. Thank you again,Maria; staying in your home made our stay a memory forever. Warm regards Adrienne and Cliff

We had a great 10 days in Oaxaca. And staying in Casa Palomita certainly added to our pleasure. It is a beautiful house in a convenient quiet location. The screens made us more comfortable than in most Oaxacan houses. It is certainly the best equipped rental house we were ever in--the kitchen is better equipped than our own. It is also perfectly laid out. Lulu was not only very helpful and sweet, but we also enjoyed her company. We would like to stay there again.

We thoroughly enjoyed this home. Everything about it was wonderful! I literally felt energized and happier just walking into the place! It is such a great location too and Lu was so sweet and wonderful. We were sad to only be able to stay 3 nights, but plan on returning for a longer stay next time. You were right, we did fall in love with Oaxaca and we will be back!

Casa Palomita - an oasis of calm and beauty

We just spent three lovely weeks at Casa Palomita. I wish we could have stayed longer! It was perfectly located within walking distance of everything, and yet it was amazingly peaceful and quiet. After walking all day to explore the sights, we would come back to a haven of calm. We loved meeting the local weavers and the tinsmith in the neighborhood, and went often to the lovely organic market and the children's library nearby. My daughter wrote a top ten list of things she loved best in Oaxaca, and Casa Palomita was number one! We truly could not have asked for anything more.

We had a delightful stay at Casa Paloma. It is perfectly situated near the center of town but hidden from all of the hustle and bustle of the city. The house was supplied with everything we needed to alternate our meals, eating in and eating out. On our first day, we walked up the block to enjoy an open air market where we stocked up on food stuffs and savored some of the local delicacies such as pan con chocolate and melenitas! From there on out, we'd tour the town enjoying all it's sophistication and excitement but always know our quiet respite at Casa Paloma was waiting for our siesta. The house itself is tastefully decorated with both old and new world art. The bright pink patio is perfect for reflecting on the days adventures or letting yourself be lulled to sleep by the fountain and the hammock. I have already recommended Casa Paloma to family and friends and hope that one day have the opportunity to return to Oaxaca and this perfect abode.

After touring all day in Oaxaca crowded markets, busy streets, abundant shops and galleries, you can feel worn out...so it's delightful to escape the noise by going home to this quiet, beautiful casita with patio, fountain, and modern conveniences. Stop by the organic market and cook dinner to save the cost of eating out all the time. It's an oasis in a city that seems to have daily parades, a bounty of brass bands, and fireworks for no apparent reason other than "why not?"

Owner's reply:

Thanks Meg and Doug! I fell in love with the quiet too. I am so happy that you found refuge in Casa Palomita and that both come back and stay at our home. Best, Maria

The moment we walked in to Casa Palomita we felt at home; the gurgling sound of falling water, the colours, the tasteful local decor -- all combined to put us completely at ease. And Lu is a guardian angel. She makes sure that everything goes well. The location was perfect; a quick walk to everywhere, with 35-40 peso taxi rides if we were feeling lazy. We also enjoyed fast internet and were able to make several long distance Skype phone calls successfully. The building is secure, which didn't seem necessary but was nice to know.

We just came back from a wonderful stay at Casa Palomita. It is a real gem -- lovingly designed and cared for. It was so nice to wake up to bird song, take an easy walk into the town center, then come back home in the heat of the day to this peaceful retreat. It is also just a quick walk up the hill to a fabulous organic farmer's market on Friday and Saturday. The house is perfectly maintained, and has a wonderful open kitchen area that is well-stocked. The two bedrooms/bathrooms are set up so that multiple people can enjoy the house with just the right mix of togetherness and privacy. Caretaker Lu is a lovely, thoughtful, helpful person. Other great touches: beautiful art on the walls, cell phones you can load up and use (so convenient!), and a binder full of recommendations for restaurants, drivers, and things to do.

Thank you Barbara! I hope you return and return to Casa Palomita.

We recently spent a month at Casa Palomita, our third visit, and hopefully just one in a much longer series. Our good friend Jorge, the manager, moved on this year to another position, but his friend Lulu has replaced him, and she is both delightful company and a very responsible overseer of the house. Since our first review, Maria has continued to add much artwork to the house, as well as a number of other improvements to already superb accomodations. Recent additions include a full length mirror in the master bedroom, and very good roll down shades on the glass doors to the patio for additional privacy. We invited friends over for dinner one of the first nights we were there, and they marveled at the beauty and comfort of the house. It's particularly a pleasure to have such ample clothes storage, both drawers and hanging, since we bring a lot with us for a month! Casa Palomita remains a delight; we feel fortunate that Maria allows us to consider it our 'second home", as well as hers, and other return guests. If guests visit soon, be sure to see the remarkable exhbiits at botht the Textile Museum and the Museum of Regional Cultures, if they are still there.

Owner's reply:

Thank you Leslie and Mike for your kind words and for returning year after year. I love the community that Casa Palomita is creating. You will love the new finish on the counter. It is beautiful! Thanks again, Maria

This year makes the third visit to Casa Palomita. Every season we are greeted with new improvements. This year we found new art work, new faucets and a new counter in the master bathroom. I am looking forward to next winter to find out what awaits us. The heart of the house is the kitchen and it is a pleasure to be able to prepare food and serve it either at the counter or at the dining room table. The open floor plan makes socializing with friends very fluid. Maria has generously provided everything one needs to prepare food and ample utensils. The beds are perfect as are the bathrooms, and of course the patio is a great place to read, visit and have a meal. I consider this my second home (as do many other guests, I'm sure) Ellen Bernstein and Ron Manganiello

I second all the positive remarks that came before. The house was put together with care and love. Lots of attention to detail, good quality kitchen supplies, thick towels, etc. The well thoughtout floorplan allows for maximum privacy for each bedroom/bathroom suite. The location is excellent., close enough to the center to walk there quickly, but in a neighborhood with it's own streets to explore and restaurants to visit. I loved walking to the aquaduct past the click clack of weavers, the beautiful gates of the Children's Library and the view of the Sierra Norte on my route. Vidal, the house's recommended driver is a jewel. Over the month, we probably hired him 10 times. He was always prompt and his driving skills are calm and cautious. His English level and my Spanish level are not great, but we both took the opportunity to learn from each other. I already him. The house is beautiful, the resources of travel books, maps, the house brochure with restaurants, guides, drivers, suggestions all make for an easy landing in a culturally rich city.

The house is beautiful, calm and quiet and easy walk to all of historic "downtown" Oaxaca. Jorge is marvelous. I really appreciated the information book Maria put together and took three great excursions with Don Vidal. We visited San Bartolo Coyotepec and met with a family that makes black pottery and visited the museum, we toured a wood working business in San Martin Tilcajete, and found a woman who embroiders dresses in a rural area whose name I'm afraid I forget. I also did a tour of microentrepreneurs (listed in Maria's info) and it was fascinating. Definitely more than worth the $50 cost -- all of which goes to finance loans. I whole-heartedly recommend Casa Palomita and Maria, who was amazingly flexible with my changing schedules.

Thank you Kate for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Casa Palomita. We hope you return and return. Much of what you found on our "What's Nearby" page were recommendations left by our family of guests. I hope someday myself to take advantage of all their recommendations! Best, Maria

I wanted to tell you how much we loved your beautiful home! It was everything we hoped it would be--convenient and quiet location, nice neighborhood, lovely home with everything one could need. We all enjoyed the hammock and did some serious reading and relaxing in it. We walked back and forth to the zocalo and Santo Domingo area via Los Arquitos, and we loved that walk. We went to the pastry shop across from the hospital every day (they probably miss us!). The cooking class at Casa Crespo was fun, educational and delicious, so I highly recommend that. We had dinner at La Casa de Abuela restaurant on the zocalo and were deligted with listening to the marimba music and watching the dancers. Otherwise, we followed other guests (and your) recommendations, eating twice at Quinque, which we really enjoyed. We had taken Wayak from Mex City to Oaxaca, but it wasn't as comfortable as the ADO bus that we took from Oaxaca to Puebla. We took a taxi to Monte Alban, which we all loved even more than Teotihuacan--it is so, so beautiful! the taxi was definitely the way to go--only 100 pesos each way and ultraconvenient. As I said to Jorge, we all definitely want to return to Casa Palomita!

Maria Martinez

Owner's reply:

Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words Moira about your stay at Casa Palomita. Nothing makes me and Jorge happier than to see our guests enjoy their stay, be relaxed, and fall in love with Oaxaca at the same time. Paloma (Palomita being the diminutive) is my daughter's name and Jorge named the house Casa Palomita because he knew I kind of have a thing for doves. The dove gargoyles on the house were a gift from the builder. We welcome your return! Thanks again, Maria

Casa Palomita's owner was totally accommodating, her on-site manager was delightful and helpful, her Oaxaca tips were useful and used, and the lovely house is at a wonderful location. It is close enough to the zocalo and various sights for walking, yet in an area that is quiet, peaceful and close to a little local market. We highly recommend it (but not so vigorously that there's never space for us again). We would return in a moment. TR and JR

Jorge was truly delightful. A serious, scholarly, funny, responsible fellow. He made us feel safe and informed. He was a godsend. I don't really know how to improve on your lovely house. It was beautiful. I'm sure you will put up more art in time. Perhaps a reading light for both sides of all the beds would be nice. It was perfectly equipped. Really. Nothing wanting. Your travel advice was perfect. I used it all. We did find a great little place on Macedonia Alcala (1.5 blocks north of Ninos Heroes) right above the hospital. Can't remember the name. It was tiny, on the east side of the street. Tortillas being made right at the entrance. Quesillo and squash blossom quesadillas were divine. The coffee house on the NW corner of Jose Lopez Alavez and Santo Tomas (1block south, 1 block west and another block south of Casa Palomita) was lovely also. Thank you Maria for a memorable two week vacation.

Casa Palomita is an excellent place to stay in Oaxaca. The house is very well-appointed -- especially the kitchen, which has beautiful pots and pans, dishes and appliances. The house is on a very quiet street close to the historical center, but also within a few blocks of some great little restaurants where you can get delicious fresh juices, handmade tortillas, memelitas, empanadas and so forth. Jorge is a lovely person; you will share a common entrance with him, but he is both friendly and respectful of the privacy of guests. He has his own separate couryard, so the outdoor space you see in the photograph is yours to enjoy. There is a hammock as well as a patio table with umbrella and chairs on the patio, not yet featured in these photos. I would definitely return to Casa Palomita -- in fact, looking at these photos again makes me want to return right away!

Lovely....what more can I say? The booking process was quite simple - even from the UK and involving bank drafts and stuff, but all went smoothly. The house is in a quiet location, but only 10 or 15 minutes walk into the very heart of the tourist area of Oaxaca. Jorge was very helpful, and everything about the house was charming and finished to a high standard. We thoroughly enjoyed out week here...thanks!

My friend Maria has created a Palomita heaven. Casa Palomita (Little Dove) is so appropriately named. There is a sweetness and a lovely spirit that is felt throughout the house. When you come into the patio, you are met by a beautifully tiled fountain, native plants, and clay dove gargoyles. The living room and kitchen are full of light, the bedrooms are spacious, with very comfortable beds. The kictchen is fully equipped with all the amenities to cook gourmet meals. Or you can just sip your coffee at the counter as the morning light shines through. I have stayed at many wonderful places in Oaxaca over the years. Casa Palomita is now at the top of the list.

Pink perfection in Oaxaca

April 5, 2011

I am part of a Norwegian group of four students that arrived at Casa Palomita in Oaxaca the 10th of February 2011. We found out about Casa Palomita through Oaxaca Learning Center, and booked the house from Norway a couple of months before arriving. When we arrived, housekeeper Jorge greeted us at the door and showed us around the house, which we imidately fell in love with. Jorge became a good friend during our stay and had both Spanish lessons with us and took us to markets and other unforgetable sights in Oaxaca. After a month's stay in Casa Palomita, I feel confident to highly recommend this lovely house to people traveling to Oaxaca. It's located in the neighborhood of Xochimilco, situated ten, or so, blocks from el Zócalo, the center of the city. We were the second guests to stay in Palomita, and as the place is quite new, a few basic things were missing upon our arrival. The beginning of our stay was characterized by having workers there most of the daytime, but we were there to do work anyway, thus we weren't too bothered by this at all. Before we left, the house was more or less completed, and we were very sad to leave the house. We loved staying there, and we all miss the pink walls, the helpful neighbor and the beautiful city of Oaxaca. Going back someday!!
