Description of the Ochre Pit Cove vacation cottage rental
Our lovely 2-bedroom cottage in Ochre Pit Cove is a cozy place to relax and enjoy life in a genuine Newfoundland fishing village. We are an hour and a half from the St. John's Airport in Conception Bay North. This cabin is right on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a very comfortable bungalow decorated with original Newfoundland art and loaded with charm. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could need to bake, cook and eat. All you need to bring are your groceries, which you can buy on your drive out in Carbonear.

The dining room seats 6, and has a deck off the back that faces the ocean so you can watch the whales spout or breach while you eat your breakfast. The living room on main floor has a comfortable couch and library chairs, and a beautiful view of the colourful salt box houses across the street. The main floor also has 2 bedrooms. The first bedroom has a double bed and the second bedroom has a queen bed, and both have new and luxurious mattresses and superior linens. The bathroom has a shower/tub.

The basement has a fully equipped laundry room for your convenience. There is also a family room with a fold-down couch (clik-clak) which is perfect for 2 children or an extra adult guest. The family room has digital TV and a DVD player. The house has an Apple iMAC computer with high speed wireless Internet and there is free, unlimited long distance within North America.

Ochre Pit Cove is a little fishing village along the North Eastern coast of the Avalon Peninsula, and more specifically along the Baccalieu Trail in Conception Bay North. Within the village you can walk a minute up the road to see the old weather-worn graveyard. If you walk two minutes down the road the other way, you will come to the wharf and fishing plant. Here you can watch the fishing boats come and go, meet the local fishermen, and watch as they have their catch hauled up. Another path will lead you to the beach where you can see the Ochre cliffs. The beach is a place to explore the tide pools, skip rocks, and in the evening you can bring down some firewood and have a little fire on the beach (bring a bucket to put out the fire when you are done please). The area is full of hiking and ATV (quad) or biking trails that you can explore. During late summer, you can walk outside your door, sit down with a pail, and pick blueberries.
If you want to swim, Northern Bay Sands park and beach is a three minute drive. This is privately owned, so you will need to pay for the day, as you would at a campground. It is worth it though, to swim in the waves and explore the beach.

It is well worth taking a drive around the multitude of outports around the bay.

A few Guest testimonials:

"Wow!! A simple but powerful word to describe our experience here. Once we arrived Patsy was here to greet us. She was so accommodating friendly, & helpful that we felt at home right away-she made us feel as if this house was our home. This place brought us back to our roots -around the Bay; 'Great Bay Whoppers'. We were away from the hectic life of the city & into tranquility. The sceney was amazing. We walked to the coast line, & relived our childhoods.Your detail to make us feel at home was unbelivable. We had a great 24 hours here, really too short. This place will be recommended by us to others & you can rest assured that we will be back.

Beautiful location in Outport

August 25, 2012

This was the perfect location for our vacation. The ocean was beautiful and just a short walk across the back field brought you to the edge of the cliff overlooking the waves. You could hear them from the back bedroom with the window open. The kitchen was better equipped than mine at home. Excellent selection of books by Newfoundland authors. I ended up buying one when I went to the mall in St. John's. My 8 & 10 year olds appreciated the basement family room and small selection of toys. Too bad we couldn't order up an August iceberg to float by. I wish I had stayed longer....

Owner's reply:

Thanks Elisabeth. I'm really happy you loved Ochre Pit Cove :)

A glorious getaway

August 7, 2012

My then-boyfriend, now-husband and I made a last-minute weekend reservation at this lovely guest house on Ochre Pit Cove during a trip to Newfoundland as summer waned in 2010, and we couldn't have been more thrilled with the accommodations, nor with the generosity and friendliness of our hostess, Karen, who was there to greet us and give us a tour of the property and history of the area. Beautifully situated near the cliffs overlooking the cove, we spent hours picking blueberries along the roads and walking paths, and many more sitting on the front porch watching the waves and squinting into the distance to see if we could spot a whale, an iceberg, or both. No fine detail or creature comfort has been overlooked in furnishing this lovely cottage -- from the hypoallergenic detergent in the laundry room and dry goods pantry stocked with everything a vacationer inevitably forgets to bring or craves upon arrival, to the slickers and rain boots in the closet for rainy day wanders, to the kitchen brimming with every tool and gadget placed just at your fingertips (both being avid cooks, my husband and I actually played a game of "I bet you they don't have..." in the kitchen and were stumped - bundt pans to zesters, we couldn't think of a single item and not find it thoughtfully provided). The weekend we spent at this gracious cottage easily ranks first for both of us as the most fun and relaxing getaway we've yet to experience. Without reservation, we would recommend this guest house to anyone and everyone interested in experiencing the beauty of Newfoundland and its outports. Thank you again, Karen, for a weekend we'll never forget. We hope to be back soon!
