You are on the best and safest block in Old San Juan, down the hill, right in the middle of the finest shops, galleries and restaurants.
You are surrounded by historic monuments: one block north of the Cristo Chapel, Pigeon Park, and La Fortaleza, giving us the added security of being probably the only property with 2 policemen right on the corner 24/7, because the Governor lives three doors down.
One block west is the Plaza de Armas, where you'll find cafes, grocer and drug stores as well as a trolley stop and taxi stand. You are 2 blocks south of the El Convento Hotel and the Puerta de San Juan, the ancient gateway to the city. Here you enter the middle of the "Paseo": a beautiful mile long walkway along the bay that stretches from the ancient cemetery to the cruise ship docks. This is a great morning jog or walk.
Legendary nightlife is 4 blocks away: "SoFo" restaurant district to the east, and San Sebastian St. for clubs & bars to the North (up the hill).
If you plan to stay in Old San Juan, you won't need a car. If you will have a car anyway, you can usually find free on-street parking nearby, but it's a bit of a hunt. If you prefer, there are several inexpensive parking lots within a few blocks. Maps showing proximity to parking and attractions are shown on the "Rental Property" link.
WHERE'S THE BEACH? (photo # 16)
We are not beachfront, but Old San Juan is where everything else is. Most people choose to stay in Old San Juan because this is where everyone comes at night, so traffic coming into town then can be a nightmare. It's easier to get in & out of town during the day to go to the beach. That way you can return, shower, maybe take a nap before going out again. Then after dinner, or whatever, you just have to walk a few blocks and you're home, instead of hassling with traffic & finding a cab.
The nearest beach is a long walk, or a 5 min cab or bus ride. We have a picture among ours here, and you can look up Escambron. It is a well maintained, free, clean, safe, beautiful beach; the only one with a lifeguard. Unlike the hotel beaches, it gets sun all day, and there are plenty of palms for shade.
The beach is part of a very interesting park with historic battlements & part of the old walls of the city. From the beach you see both forts.
Early mornings the women's water aerobics group meets there. Very friendly group, you can work out with them for free. There is an outdoor snack bar that also serves drinks cheap, and a reasonable restaurant with outdoor terrace and indoor air-conditioned dining room, serving local food.
You will not find a better beach in San Juan. See picture # 32
PARKING: see map, picture # 17
Finding parking in Old San Juan can be challenging. On street parking is free, or there are several pay parking lots within a few blocks. (see map in large photo) Unless you're planning on exploring the Island, you won't need a car. Old San Juan is only 8 sq. blocks, and we are right in the middle. We are 20 min. from the airport, and there are always cabs there to meet each flight. For local trips there are cabs on the next corner, or you can call one. Numbers are programmed into your phone.

Old San Juan Vacation
April 6, 2012
We visited San Juan last month and enjoyed the convenience of the appartment location. I was right in the center of town within walking distance to all major attractions, shopping and restaurants. The appartment was a little spartan and outdated but clean and had A/C in the bedrooms. The outdoor living room was a nice spot to realx and listen to the rain falling, which it did 5 days out of 7! Thanksfully, we did not chose to stay in a hotel by the beach! Best of all, were the Boveda employees who could not have been more friendlier and helpful. I'll recommend the appartment, providing that you are not looking for luxurious accommodations.
Spartan and outdated - Oh no! We do keep empty shelves among the books & guide magazines, for guests to put their stuff on, but the art is real, and the plants are live! Out dated, I guess you mean the kitchen, but since it's open air, anything we put in there will be weathered in weeks.
In the tropics, unless you're hermeticly sealed fashionable stainless steel is the worst, it rusts immediately in the salt air, so that's really not an option. Oh well, at least we got "clean & friendly!"
Great deal for an awesome location

My friend and I stayed in the studio of the Garden apt, which was perfect for 2 people. We were able to lounge on the couch outside our room which was very nice. The studio was clean and comfortable, with a ceiling fan and AC. There was a TV too, but who goes to San Juan to watch TV ? :) The location in old San Juan was just perfect. We walked everywhere, and it was so charming. The price is unbeatable, and they were very nice and helpful to us.
Home away from home

We rented the Garden Apt. with another another couple and their adult daughter. It was the perfect location for the wedding we there to attend. All the wonderful restaurants, shops, and attractions were within walking distance. The apartment was safe and quiet and the natural light from interior "patio" area was wonderful. The employees in Boveda were helpful and funny. I'd stay again and did not want to leave. We will stay again and have found a new way to vacation, forget overpriced hotels. Thank you for everything.

OLD SAN JUAN GARDEN APARTMENT
April 3, 2011
We were two couples, so the Garden apartment was perfect for us, as we had complete privacy, with separate bedrooms and bathrooms. We could be together in the living room to chat, or open the doors between the bedrooms if we wanted to be in air conditioning together, but it was really cool enough in the living room, and all the plants made us feel like we were in the jungle. The location couldn't have been better. The Forts are up the hill, but we did that in the morning. Everything else was down the hill, right where we were, particularly dozens of diverse restaurants. The building is well kept and ultra secure. We recommend this place!
Boveda - Great ambience right in Old San Juan
April 1, 2011
The folks at Boveda are great! Very laid back, hilarious, and solid as a team that has been together for a long time. The accomodations are comfortable and quiet. The rooms have AC, ceiling fans, and wonderful louvers. The location in Old San Juan is outstanding. (Do prepare for quite a long walk to the beach, however. But, great restaurants at night abound in Old San Juan. Feels like Europe.) Owner, Linda Williams, is wonderful. One night I left my brand new pocketbook, filled with stuff like my passport. Linda called me from PR, and we laughed about how in the world I had done this. Then she UPS'd it to me. My family will plan go back to Boveda asap ! Elisabeth

We stayed at the Boveda Apts for a wedding we attended. The accommodations were very nice. We really liked garden in the night when we could hear the rain coming down. The apt. was nice, comfortable and clean. The location was great right in Old San Juan we could walk almost everywere. Over all we had a very nice stay.
Garden Apartment Review
February 10, 2011
Two couples shared this apartment for 3 nights in February, 2011. The staff at Boveda was very patient and helpful with the reservation and on our arrival. We found the quarters to be delightfully "funky", clean, and quite adequate for our stay. The location was outstanding. We would stay there again--it's a good value.

Exactly what I was looking for!!!
December 16, 2009
I loved Caleta 64. We stayed in Ballaja. We were 2 couples. One night my brother-in-law stayed and slept on the loveseat that has a footrest/ottoman, so when you put it together it's like a bed. Everything is very nicely kept and updated. I really don't like to stay in big hotels when I travel because I feel like I pay for a bunch of things I never really use (gym, spas, etc...) So this time I paid for what I wanted: atmosphere, location and cleanliness. The apartment was on a quaint little street. It was great to be able to walk to clubs, restaurants and stores. At night my husband and I walked along El Morro and the water and it was beautiful. Betsy was amazing, we were supposed to arrive at 12:00am and didn't end up getting there until 1:30am and she still welcomed us with a smile and answered all our questions. She came everyday to check on us and change our towels and get anything we needed. I really recommend this place. I am definitely coming back. Oh and although you don't get your own parking spot we found parking right in front of our door 95% of the time!
