Area Information
"Casa Ostional" is situated in the small town of Ostional which is approximately one and one-half hours southwest of the Liberia International Airport. Ostional is well known as one of the largest Olive Ridley Turtle nesting sites in the world and therefore is considered protected land. Because of this, we offer a knowledgeable bilingual guide who will arrange for all of your daily excursions (i.e. turtle watching, fishing, diving, horseback riding, surfing, hiking, beaches, shopping, canopy tours, and volcano tours) at reasonable daily/weekly rates.

Turtles can be seen all year round in conjunction with full moons - usually 5 days before and 5 days after a full moon.

Ostional and the surrounding areas feature gorgeous beaches each with it's own unique personality - some for tranquil walks and hammocks and others with invigorating surf and hiking trails and lava flows. Some of the activities in the area include fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, hiking, horseback riding, zip-lining, turtle and bird watching. If you plan on staying for more than a week, you may want to plan a trip to the Arenal Volcano and other National Parks.

What a gorgeous place to vacation! Not only is the house even more gorgeous than the pictures show, the views are breathtaking. You cannot have an experience in Costa Rica like the one my group had, without staying at Casa Ostional. The staff made fantastic meals everytime, and were so incredibly friendly. Without our driver, I don't know where we would have been. He became so much more than just our chauffeur--he was a full-time tour guide, as well. Had we not had him to help us, our trip could have never ran so smoothly and been so fulfilling. Casa Ostional is perfectly located. It's about 15-20 minutes away from some city activity, so you really feel like you're in the middle of your own jungle paradise, without the crazy long drive to reach town. We were only about 25 minutes away from ziplining, horseback riding (through the jungle and on the beaches), renting ATV's, surf shops, and beaches. With the help of our driver, everything was more than reasonably priced, and helped our trip be so successful. We couldn't have asked for a more luxurious vacation at such an affordable price! Thank you to all at Casa Ostional!

Could not say enough good things regarding our trip to Ostional. Truly an experience of a lifetime. Our driver and tour guide Elias was wonderful and catered to all our needs. He is very knowledgable of the area, local connections, and activities to keep you busy. The staff prepared excellent food 3x a day! The home had all the amenties to truly relax and views that never ended. Thank you very much everyone at Casa Ostional for making this vacation one to remember forever. Tony/Carrie/Carly/Lilly

What an incredible vacation. With 2 16 year old boys and an 11 year old boy, it's hard to please everyone. Not this year, the boys had a blast on ATVs, zip lining, surfing, deep sea fishing, and just swimming in the ocean. Mom and Dad actually got a little R&R between all the excursions. Elias was incredible. He arranged anything and everything and truly became apart of our family. It was wonderful to have someone with us that knows the language, the locals and all the best places to visit. Lest I forget, Luis and Elena put the finishing touch on the best vacation ever. Not once did I have to think of what to make for breakfast, lunch dinner. Thank you to everyone at Casa Ostional. We'll be back!!!

You were on spot -- Elias was amazing: fun, thoughtful, and entergetic. He really made the vacation an experience and an adventure! We did many of the typical vacation things: ziplining, and snorkeling, but when I asked everyone to rate their top two experiences, here's what we got (and there are more than 2 answers as not everyone's answers were the same):

Watching the Olive Ridley turtles lay eggs, and learning about the village and its history with the turtles;
Fishing for tuna and reds, and more;
Cheering on the sabernaros as they competed to capture rings off a hanging string;
Driving up to Monte Verde and our fabulous night walk where we saw a two-toed sloth, pit viper, a prorcupine in a tree itching itself, sleeping jays, a hiding tarantula, and so much more;
Riding the rivers with guides and seeing crocodiles, screech owls, bats...;
Visiting the Guaitil Pottery makers and learning about their history and art;
Just terrific!

What a wonderful time we had during our stay at Casa Ostional! The house, its pool and decks are so inviting. Spacious open areas with floor to ceiling glass gives the feeling of being part of the outdoors even when inside. We spent a lot of time on the new upper observatory deck enjoying the great views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding forest, bird watching and listening to the howler monkeys in the trees. (Bring your binoculars!) The Ostional area is very remote and rural, the REAL Costa Rica, not touristy or resorty at all. Casa Ostional is an oasis retreat from which to set out on new adventures or to relax as you desire.

I can not say enough about Elias, our companion and guide throughout our time at Ostional. He is invaluable to truly getting the best out of your experience in the Ostional and Guanacaste area. I always do a lot of research on the web when going somewhere new, but I did not have to do anything this time. Just sit back and enjoy! Elias knows the best of the best and always has suggestions for activity options for the day and adds a local Costa Rica experience that you would not get on your own. Elias was comfortably part of our group and I would not do the trip without his services. The roads can be amazingly rough in places (including river crossings where there are no bridges). We were happy to have Elias as our driver to negotiate some of those treacherous places.

Chef Luis and his wife Elena are back at Casa Ostional after a short time away at other ventures. Luis' gourmet meals are so wonderful, there is no need to eat anywhere else. He creates delicious sauces that are perfect accompaniment to each dish. We loved the freshly made fruit juices at each meal. It is such a luxury to have all the cooking and cleaning done for you in your own home. Elena is so cheerful and fun to be around. We had a great dancing party one night!

We were there mid June, early in the rainy season. We were pleasantly surprised at the comfortable temperatures in the low 80s, as we had assumed it would be very hot weather. Morning sun for activities and afternoon showers for relaxing made a perfect combination.

Thanks Mike for having such a wonderful place for us to escape!

Joined by four good friends (two couples), my husband and I recently spent a week at Casa Ostional. The layout of the well-designed, contemporary house allowed for each
couple to have their own spacious sleeping quarters, large bathroom, and generous closet. Two of the three also
included comfortable outdoor balconies, with the third loft space overlooking the broad expanse of two-story glass
with a view of the sea.

The open living and kitchen space extending to a large outdoor deck was the perfect place for gatherings, both indoor and out, as well as ample space for group dining. Multiple fans on the
interior and the beautiful outdoor infinity pool, chaise lounges, and
hammocks warded off the afternoon heat and enhanced our siesta time. Though our visit was in the dry season, well maintained and lush vegetation surrounded the house and provided greenery and fresh flowers for the interior spaces.

As others have written, the food was well-prepared, healthy, and took advantage of the local fruits, seafood, and vegetables. Staff members Karen and Daniel were a delightful couple and never failed to make us smile. I also loved being able to get my daily dog
fix from their friendly and well-behaved dog, Boxy.

Our visit would have been much more difficult without the cheerful
assistance of Elias, our driver, guide, educator, and translator. His unending patience, flexibility, good humor, and knowledge of the area ensured that our stay was trouble-free and adventure-
filled. He is a must-have!

We just returned from a week at Casa Ostional with a group of 6 friends. What a wonderful week it was! The house is beautiful - mostly glass looking out over the surrounding forest and the nearby coast. We could hear the sounds of the surf, howler monkeys and the birds from the decks. The decks and the "observatory" were amazing places for star gazing at night. Karen and Dani took terrific care of us - always keeping the house and pool in perfect shape and feeding us delicious and healthy meals. I can't imagine being there without having Elias as your driver and guide. He had ideas for things to do but was always in tune with what our group wanted. Our favorite activities were snorkling and beach combing at the beach at San Juanillo, walking on Playa Ostional at sunset, and the zipline. We didn't get to see turtles this time so.... I guess we'll just have to come back!

We had a GREAT time in Costa Rica. Casa Ostional was a fun place - with a great view and beautiful sunsets on the Pacific. The full time cook and driver is the only way to go. Can't imagine driving those roads without Elias. Karen and Danny were always there to help us. Three meals a day were prepared for us and they were very healthy meals served with a smile. For those that don't mind being a little remote - Casa Ostional is the place. When we would ask if we could go to a particular place or do a particular thing, Elias would say "it is possible and we are going to do it!". It was a fun and interesting experience for our first time to Costa Rica. Many thanks to all of you. Mike and Judy

Thanks Mike we all had a great time. Elias, Danny, and Karen did a wonderful job of taking care of us while we were there. A quick reality check as we arrived back in Grand Rapids this morning to a foot of snow and 0 degrees F. Pictures will be coming soon. On our fishing trip we caught 5 sailfish and some red snapper and a few dorado as well!! You can rely on Captains William and David!! We took Elias with us and we all had a great time. Thanks again for a great time and all that you said came true on TICO TIME! Best! Norman - Grand Rapids, Michigan

December, 2012
We're finally back from our fabulous trip to CR. We had a great time during our week at Ostional. What an amazing house you have! What a treat it was to wake up each day and have coffee on that great deck. As I look out at the snow in Minneapolis, I'm missing all that green. We were pretty active during our week there. We did a great horseback trip in the jungle and on the beach. We also did a zip-line tour in Nosara with Miss Sky Canopy tours. That exceeded all of our expectations and thankfully our youngest (6 year old) loved it as well. We explored many of the beaches around, but seemed to keep coming back to Playa Pelada in Nosara. We found it to be a perfect combination of waves for body surfing, soccer for the kids, nature in the tidal pools and authenticity with mostly Ticos there. We were lucky to see a turtle laying eggs one night on the beach in Ostional and also "guided" some hatchlings to the ocean. Both of these were truly magical experiences; I can only imagine what it's like to see an arrival with thousands of turtles. We'll have to find out the next time. We also checked out the rodeo that was in Ostional. Thankfully, we weren't there the night that a bull gored one of the round-up horses, but we all found it to be an extremely interesting and entertaining glimpse into the local culture. I can't say enough great things about Elias. We were wondering if it was going to be a little awkward or stifling to have a driver, as we typically like to explore on our own, but he made us always feel that our time was our time and that we could come and go as we wanted. It was great to have an insider's perspective on different locations and activities in the area. I'm thankful that we got to know each over the week and feel like we have a new friend from Costa Rica as a result. We were surprised to not find Luis cooking when we arrived, as we had read such great reviews about his cuisine prior to our arrival. Our initial disappointment, however, was extinguished after our first meal. Karen consistently prepared great and varied meals and was always very cheerful and made us feel very comfortable there. The same can be said about Dani. He and Karen were always very friendly with us and made us feel so comfortable. Their dog, Boxy, was also a welcome companion around the house and on some walks in the area. He made us miss our dog a little less. Thanks so much for sharing this great place with us and others. We hope to be able to come back some day, but in the meantime we will be encouraging family and friends to pay a visit. I can't imagine who wouldn't love spending a week there. David

Our experience visiting Mike's oasis in the
Guanacaste province overlooking the Pacific Ocean
was so perfect that it bordered on the surreal. Much
of our time was spent basking in the sun around the
infinity pool and hot tub eating fresh fruits, watching
a cascade of small green parrots flow in and out of
the tree above us as if they were participating in a
choreographed dance, listening to howler monkeys
faint hoot and watching over Konrad and Kamil - our
2 1/2 year old twin boys - who had an absolute blast
in the pool and tub. The property caretakers, Luis
and Elena were great (Luis, it turns out is a true chef
and prepared gourmet meals everyday throughout the
entire trip. However, what made the trip more
enjoyable than other vacations we have taken
overseas, and so smooth/worry-free, was our own
caretaker, Elias. At a very reasonable cost per day,
Elias was our: chauffeur; tour guide; translator; and
friend. After a week filled with: horse rides on the
beach; zip lining through the tropical forests; ATV
rides along the mountain-scape; and long siestas
pool-side, we truly left CR revived and fulfilled.

I spent 8 months researching where to spend a vacation. Living in the Seattle area, I wanted to go someplace warm. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a location called "Casa Ostional" owned by Mike Kreis. We did not want to go to a typical resort (stupid & expensive). If we wanted that, we would have chosen Hawaii; been their and done that many times. Casa Ostional seemed like a risk, since it was remote. I like to take risks, so I schedule 8 days (24 June-2 July) for my 3 daughters (15,20,22), a boyfriend, and my wife. I'm 59, spent 27 years in the Army traveling across the globe and we all agreed that Casa Ostional was THE BEST vacation in our lives... "Bar None!" I almost didn't leave...Elias is superb (property manager). He's available for hire (driver) and speaks excellent English and will pick-up and drop-off at the Airport in a 60K brand new Toyota Land Cruiser (seats 7, incl. driver). Do not worry about scheduling anything prior to arrival; he'll do it all for you and there is MUCH TO DO! The weather was pretty much perfect during our stay (only rained twice in the afternoon (2 hrs) and some late evenings, but he'll schedule everything around the weather. There was no need for us using the fans at night; you'll all sleep like rocks. Everyone was in bed by 8:30 and we got
up at 6:00 a.m. We spent an evening watching Turtles come up and lay eggs. It's very cool and historical. It's a short walk from the sign-in shack (8 bucks ea). Take a couple of flashlights for the walk up, but on the beach, you'll turn them off. There is much more, but I'll let you find out! We drove up to Tamirindo and it's nothing but a tourist trap; stayed 2 hours and wanted out. Flamingo is the same trap. Vendors bug you from the time you get out of your car, to the time you leave; it's nuts! It was funny watching people trying to surf in one foot waves! Nosara is the place to surf!!! I don't even recommend wasting time driving the 1 hr- 40 minutes to get there; go to one of the many gorgeous beaches nearby! The most people with us on any one of the many beaches were seven. Luis and Elena (caretakers) will wake you up in the morning or usually the Howler Monkeys will! Luis is a trained Chef and his cooking is superb. If you want anything special just ask; like a birthday cake or special requests. Costa Rica coffee is also the best! I brought along caramel to add. Take your I-Pods (chargers), E-Readers and cameras. We took over 2,000 pics and most are great. Everybody is a little skeptical and I'm no different. This IS THE REAL DEAL and we'll be back, but much longer next time!!! A month or longer would be perfect. I lost 10 pounds in 8 days. You'll be on Tico Time and it will probably extend your life by five years. PURA VIDA baby!!!!! I would like to thank Mike Kreis, Elias, Luis, and Elena for the most wonderful vacation our family has ever experienced! It has changed all of us in such a wonderful way-- forever! Jim Patten - Seattle, Washington

We vacationed at Casa Ostional 5/11/12-5/18/12. We were two families traveling with very young children ages 3 months old, 5 months old, and a 2 year old. This was our second trip to Costa Rica but first time with young children. We must say that our vacation was an unforgettable experience. The highlight of the vacation was definitely Luis' cooking! The meals were restaurant-style delicious! Each one made from scratch plus the natural juices like pineapple and watermelon were provided which was definitely refreshing. We recommend the meal plan. Further, we loved Elena's hospitality- not only did she clean up the home daily, she also offered to watch the babies a couple of times so the moms can have a quiet meal or the dads can enjoy a swim while the moms went for a massage. Both Elena and her sister who also helped with the babies woke up extremely early at 4:30am to say goodbye to us on our departing date - that meant a lot to us. Elias was not only our guide and driver throughout the trip, but he also was a helper when we had to unload diaper bags, babies, tents, etc at the beach. We were able to enjoy our vacation the moment we landed in San Jose instead of stressing out to find a rental vehicle and then our way to Casa Ostional, which is not an easy path. Lastly, the views at Casa Ostional were astounding with ocean and jungle views. There's plenty of wildlife in the area such as a group of howler monkeys which you heard them every morning and evening living in a tree walking distance from house, and direct access to a variety of birds right outside your window. We spent a great deal of time in the pool which was our favorite part of the house! Our vacation was a memorable adventure and it's the first trip of many for us as a family. Thanks again Elias, Luis, Elena, FiFi, and sister for a wonderful time. Brandon - Tampa, Florida

Off the grid in Paradise with new found friends:

First off, I am not a person that usually returns to the same spot on vacation, EVER. I will be back, and our entire group of seven agreed. Costa Rica was special by itself, but this home, and especially the people the owner Mike has helping as cooks, and guides are what made this trip sensational. We never worried about meals, Elena and Luis made us great food and were so nice. Their little daughter Cheron even taught us some Spanish and joined us when we watched movies, her puppy would come play by the pool at times also, so fun!. Elias was absolutely amazing. He took us anywhere we wanted to go and found us even better spots, and answered every question we had. You could tell he loved his country and took genuine interest in us and making sure we had a great time. He was fun and when it came to saying goodbye we were all very sad, like leaving family behind! We almost had a cry at the airport. The house itself was gorgeous. Three bathrooms, two master suites and another loft that acted as one. There were amazing views from every spot on the property. Great wildlife everywhere and only minutes to some fantastic beaches. Highlights were helping turtle hatchlings make there way to the ocean, saving them from vultures, zip lining, body surfing, a side trip to Arenal Volcano (a must! and stay at Leaves and Lizards), and just relaxing at the Casa and in that fantastic pool. The pictures for the home are great, but don't do it justice. Everyone praises Elias, Luis, and Elena, and again, this does not do them justice either. This is one of the best trips I've been on and that is a list of 40 + countries. Costa Rica, and specifically our Casa Ostional experience exceeded our wildest expectations. We miss it! Thanks to everyone from Travis, Cari, Tim, Margaret, Warren, Krystal & Jay

The house, pool and surroundings were beautiful, exceeding our expectations. The meal plan and the transportation package with Elias are highly recommended. Elias was a great tour guide and host. Luis and Elana provided excellent meals, and kept the place spotless. All nine in our party had a great vacation and would recommend this to family and friends. The area provided plenty of activities such as horse back riding, Zip line tours above the jungle and multiple beautiful beaches. ATV rental was a favorite with limited-less trails available. The house and pool provided a good option, when we just wanted to relax.

Sorry Mike for the slow response. We had an excellent vacation, the house was beautiful and the views were amazing. A good way to spend the day at the pool, is having a ice cold pilsen beer and listening to the birds and monkeys. Thanks to Luis and Rosario making all the good food, we even had homemade chicken soup at my request, which was delicious .We even celebrated Melida's birthday with a BBQ and a cake. Also the house was very well kept, and the pool was always clean. Elias was awesome and a good decision to hire him, he knows his country very well. Elias took us to so many cities and places. And did many activities, like horseback riding in the jungle and by the ocean. He also took us to the volcano and to the waterfalls. The people of Costa Rica are very friendly, there was always a friendly wave.. Mike, Elias, Luis and Rosario make a great team together keep up the good work, we will be back!! Thanks Paul and Melida

March, 2011

We spent 8 days at Casa Ostional in late March
2011 and we had the vacation of a lifetime! The
house and grounds were beautiful. The house was
spacious and clean with great views of the
surrounding jungle, ocean and wildlife. There were
2 couples in our party and we had more than
enough room (the house can accommodate many
more people comfortably). The pool and jacuzzi
were gorgeous! Photos cannot do justice to the
beauty of the house, grounds and pool.

The food prepared by the staff, Rosario and Luis,
was delicious. There were a variety of fruits,
vegetables (some from their own garden!) and
meats prepared in the local style. Both Luis and
Rosario were friendly and very helpful.

While we were there, we decided to hire Elias, who
was our guide and driver. At first, we considered
renting a car for the week and driving ourselves.
However, after strong recommendations from family
who had hired Elias on their trip, we decided to do
the same. This turned out to be a fantastic
decision! Elias knowledge of the area, roads,
people, secluded beaches and local excursions was
truly impressive and an essential part of our
amazing vacation. We did several excursions such
as zip lining, yoga classes, visiting a vertical cave
and snorkeling.
But, we spent most of our time relaxing at some of
the most secluded and beautiful beaches we have ever

We feel blessed to have met Mike and had the
opportunity to stay at his amazing place. By the
end of our stay, we felt we had met new friends in
Elias, Luis, and Rosario. We have and do highly
recommend this experience and hope to return and
visit them again at Casa Ostional one day!

Wow, what a fabulous week in Costa Rica. My husband and I traveled with 4 men over age of 25 and stayed for 7 nites. We could not have asked for a better location to stay and to have the services available at your casa. We were blessed to have Rosaria and Louis to help with everything we needed at the house the meals were fabulous and the house always kept clean and attended to our every need. Elias our guide and good to have available as for travel and would recommend you let him plan your activities upon your arrival. We traveled as group of six and not one went away with a negative thing to say. Mike your home and location is amazing. Would definitely recommend Casa Ostional as a alternative to resort living. Will definitely return to CR.

My wife and I recently vacationed at Casa Ostional. What a fabulous Casa with a great staff.
My son and his wife visited us and were equally excited about the accommodations and the
very private nature of this villa and this area of Costa Rica. Elias was truly a great asset to us during our
entire visit and we never had to worry about transportation, directions, sightseeing, our security
or translating the language. In addition, Luis and Rosario helped make our stay very enjoyable
with great dining experiences during our stay. We are looking forward to our next visit to Costa Rica and
Casa Ostional, we would recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to relax and enjoy
a very beautiful, friendly and wonderful Costa Rica.

We spent 5 days at Casa Ostional to avoid the hassle of Mardi Gras for one year. Best decision we have made in a long time! The house and its surrounding amenities are beautiful. Elias was an absolute pleasure and necessity. Luis and Rosaria were amazing as well. If you are looking for the true Costa Rican rustic experience but need a little luxury too, I highly recommend Casa Ostional. We will be back!

Hi Mike,
Sorry for the slow response...just returning home. Everything was great at the house. The pool was amazing, we all really enjoyed our stay there. Elias was great! We had our own car, so we followed behind him everywhere. It was a great ending to our trip!
We've spread the word about your house, so hopefully we'll send more renters your way!!

Hey Mike - I just got back to NY last night but wanted to let you know we had an amazing time in Costa Rica. Casa Ostional was absolutely wonderful and certainly more beautiful than the pictures imply. We all pinched ourselves every morning for our good fortune of finding your house on-line. We also can't say enough about Luis and Rosario. They were wonderful and made us feel right at home. Thanks again for letting us experience all the beauty of Ostional and the surrounding areas from your amazing house. We can't wait to get back down there.

All the best,

Casa Ostional is the perfect place to stay at while you are vacationing around Guanacaste, Costa Rica. My favorite part of the house was the main deck. It has a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. Every afternoon, we would relax at the deck while marveling at the sunset. Wow! Those bright orange, yellow, blue, white colors in the horizon make great pics. One time, we were so fortunate to witness the howler monkeys. They were just a few feet away from the Casa Ostional. Every morning we would hear them howling nearby. I was so amazed to see wild monkeys, and they are not afraid of people. I am glad they are not hunted.
My favorite part of the day was after dinner. Every evening, I would go back to the deck and lie down on those long wooden benches and marble at the constellation for hours. It is just you and nature. You hear the waves of the Pacific Ocean, the wind blowing, nocturnal birds singing, and see bats flying around. There is nothing to be afraid of. They are harmless not vampires! I definitely traveled back in time. All this experience reminded me of my childhood when I used visit small towns in Bolivia.
Casa Ostional serves delicious food. Rosario is a great cook and very helpful. She is always trying to please everybody. If you are picky, I recommend you tell them ahead of time what foods you eat. Remember, Casa Ostional is away from civilization and supermarkets are far away. Rosario and Luis keep the house very clean and neat. The house is getting better and better. When we stayed at the place, a pool was under construction. Probably, when you visit Casa Ostional, you will be enjoying a new hand-made pool made by Nicaraguans. Does it really matter? YES! They are hard working people and need to get some credit. The garden around the house is growing very fast under the care of Luis. There is a beautiful rock path around the house to explore the area. I was even able to harvest my own papayas and plantains at the property.
Elias was our tour guide. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. He was always ready to take us anywhere you want to go. We explored dozens of beaches. Each of them was different. We went hiking, snorkeling, zip lining, shopping, to mention a few. Elias knows local artists as well. We had the pleasure to meet Eduardo Pica Piedras. Eduardo makes beautiful wood carvings. You will be able to see his magnificent work at Casa Ostional.
The whole experience at Casa Ostional was great. The staff is friendly, the house is well maintained, and food is delicious. I definitely recommend this peaceful place. You will feel as if you were in your own house without the presence of other guests. Something that you can not avoid in hotels or resorts. It is just you and your family or friends. Costa Rica is Pura Vida y Casa Ostional complementa todo. FELIZ VIAJE!

WOW... What a week we just had!
My wife and I as well as our two teenage daughters, and a friend and his family all stayed at Casa Ostional for a week in December. I live in San Jose, Costa Rica and work at the US Embassy and have had the opportunity to travel all over the country, however, I must say this was the most relaxing weekend we have spent here. Casa Ostional is situated only ten minutes from the beach and sits on a mountain with incredible views. We would all wake up each morning, go out on the deck and listen to the monkeys and various birds while enjoying fresh made coffee and juices.
Rosario and Luis were nothing less than outstanding and their cooking was to die for. For only $15.00 per person per day (equalling only $5.00 per meal per person) was well worth it and provided us a varieity of food. Elias was also outstanding and took care of whatever need we had. He showed us the best beaches to go to and was there to serve as a guide if we needed, but he was never in the way. We really appreciated all his help and hospitality.
I am looking forward to going back to Casa Ostional in the future to this tranquil setting to relax and enjoy the nature of Guanacaste. Photography is one of my passions and there were photo opportunities at every turn, beach and river crossing. I would highly recommend Casa Ostional to my family, friends and/or anyone that is looking for an incredible Costa Rican get away.

My wife and I just got back from our Honeymoon at Casa Ostional. What can I say except it was absolutely perfect. Thank you so much for providing us with the opportunity to completely fulfill our dreams. We had high hopes going into the trip, but they were definitely exceeded. I am so happy we decided to have Elias guide us because he truly made our trip. What a great guy. We will definitely keep in touch with him. We would wake up to a mouthwatering fresh fruit tray and breakfast on the deck. Sipping rich local coffee, we would discuss our day plans. Our mornings were spent either horseback riding on the beach (we highly recommend a guide in Samara named Giovani), caving in Barra Honda National Park, snorkeling, ocean fishing, zip-lining, or hiking for turtles. We would make our way back to the house around noon for a great lunch and a little siesta/book read by the pool. In the early afternoon we would make our way down to one of the many beaches in the area and surf until the sunset. Great dinners every night followed by hot tub sitting and star gazing. We were even lucky enough to have a lunar eclipse the first night. We went to a local rodeo on Christmas eve and spent Christmas night on the deck with the whole gang. Charcoal BBQ pork on handmade corn tortillas with guacamole and pico de gallo. Rosario baked up a Christmas cake and with Elias translated his favorite music to us while dancing a mean salsa! What a blast!

Luis & Rosario are so sweet, and boy can that young lady cook! Every meal was delicious and everything made from scratch. The house was kept immaculately and everyday we would return to what felt like a brand new place. We would absolutely love to return to your lovely home in Ostional in the future. Thanks again!

I was with the owner when he bought this property. At the time I thought it was a mistake, man was I wrong! The design and layout of the house and property are even better then the excellent photographs on this site.
Luis and Rosario are both wonderful and helpful. Elias, who I have known for many years, is without doubt a true friend to all who he comes into contact with. I would highly recommend him as your guide.
The Ostional area is now my favorite area in all of Costa Rica. The only downside to staying at Casa Ostional is eventually you have to leave.

I have to say, from the arrival to the departure we had the best 7 days and Honeymoon we could ask for. From conception, we were both "concerned" about spending our honeymoon in Ostional. We both had heard of San Jose, CR, but never Ostional. However trusted friends promised us it would be perfect. We took their advice and it was the best decision we could have made regarding our honeymoon destination. We were greeted at the airport by Elias. He was a outstanding tour guide that was extremely knowledgeable on all of Costa Rica and we recommend using him. He spoke great English, put up with my elementary Spanish, and had a great sense of humor.

We arrived at the vacation home in Ostional and were greeted by Luis and Rosario, the caretaker and cook for the home. They were warm and friendly and we immediately felt as though there goal was to make us feel as
comfortable as they could. Goal Achieved by Luis and Rosario with high marks! We had 3 meals a day for the week. I am a big fan of great service, but a fanatic for "Personalized Great Service"! Here's an example of what I mean by personalized great service. Our 1st night we had fish and rice and beans and salad. In CR, salad dressing is not regularly used. So my wife whipped up a homemade vinaigrette using olive oil, salt and pepper and fresh limes. The next day we had chicken Rice and beans and salad for dinner and without requesting salad dressing, vinaigrette was on the table waiting for
us just like my wife made it the day before! We were impressed and that was the way the entire week went. We made our bed the first night and removed the blanket. The next 5 nights, the house staff made the bed without the

They staff was so kind and courteous to us, we actually cooked an American meal for them one night!

The house is also fantastic. Open, spacious, SAFE and gated. We loved the large showers, IPOD compatible speakers, books to read, a backyard that you could spend 1/2 day tour and sight seeing.

It's a destination that we will definitely revisit and stay at this home using Elias, Rosa and Luis. They were a part of a important time in our life and they made it unforgettable!

Jeanne and I had a most enjoyable stay at Casa Ostional, high on a mountainside with a breathtaking view overlooking the warm Pacific Ocean. We were greatly honored to be the first guests at this unique home! The house is fully equipped with all that you need. The warmth of the furnishings and stunning cabinetry of local woods added to the comfort of our stay.
A wonderful retreat for peace and solitude yet close to several good restaurants and beautiful beaches. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this fascinating part of Costa Rica with Casa Ostional as our base.
Thank you Michael for sharing your piece of paradise with us.

Our vacation in Ostional Costa Rica could not have been more relaxing and enjoyable. Having this architectural marvel as headquarters for embarking on excursions: fishing; surfing; hiking; bull-fighting and shopping was phenomenal. Each morning, we awoke slowly to distant chants of howler monkeys accompanied by a serenading of song-birds. Once risen, we enjoyed mornings on the porch sipping coffee and eating lavish meals prepared by the house's keepers/staff. WE WILL BE BACK!!!

Wow! Where do you start when describing this incredible place?! The house and its surroundings are breathtaking. The photos are good but nothing compared to the real thing. Fall asleep to the winds and noises of the jungle and wake to the beautiful sunshine over the Pacific Ocean. The hospitality provided by the Luis and Rosario was perfect. Their meals served a taste of local flavor and were delicious. They even went out of their way to accommodate my vegetarian diet.

The daily activities organized by Elias were fascinating glimpses into the local culture and wildlife. The people, the animals, the vegetation, the beaches, the country, the culture - he knew it all and was so happy to share his love of everything with anyone that wanted to listen. Heck, he even tried to teach me Spanish. We ventured with Elias to five or six incredible beaches, rode horses, fished, shopped and hiked till we dropped. I don't have a favorite activity because they were all great experiences. I'd go back in a heartbeat and will definitely plan to do so!

We had an amazing time at your house in Ostional! Your Staff was wonderful
and exceeded our expectations for service and delicious meals. Can't say
enough about your guide Elias. He stayed with us the entire time and was a
great companion, educator, advisor, entertainer, and always made us feel
very safe. He took us on one amazing adventure after another. We had an
action packed week of surfing the best waves I've ever seen, watched dozens
of giant sea turtles nesting, went horseback riding in the mountains overlooking
the ocean and through the jungle along rivers with giant trees full of
howler monkeys, beautiful birds and iguanas, took an off shore fishing trip where we had close contact with a giant whale with 2 calves, attended a local rodeo &
bull fight, took long off road trip to see the countryside and to visit
waterfalls and swimming holes. We even had time to relax on the beach and
on the great front deck of the house a little while. We actually had a
whale sighting from the deck! Needless to say we returned from our daily
adventures tired and hungry to the comforts of home and Rosario's spread of
fantastic local food and drink. I never knew I could eat so many mangoes and avocados!
We look forward to our next visit and highly recommend these accommodations
and the guide service to anyone who wants a REAL Costa Rica experience.

In preparing to write this review, we decided to first
read the journal we kept while visiting Casa
Ostional. What we found most interesting was the
very first thing we wrote our first night home:

We miss Ponchito.

When you visit Casa Ostional, you will understand
what we mean. You will also understand why your
vacation will feel more like a home away from home
rather than a vacation destination. The relaxed
atmosphere of Casa Ostional, from the -every room
has a view- layout of the house to the staff to the
sounds of the nearby howler monkeys, your body
and soul start to feel like they are in your favorite
easy chair.

Luis and Rosario will prepare your meals with care
and provide you with local flavor, not by design, but
because they ARE local flavor. A charming young
couple that lives in the adjacent guesthouse, they
will make you delicious meals daily, along with
fresh mango, papaya and pineapple.

And if you decide to hire Elias, a wonderful guide
that we hired for the entire week (highly
recommended!), he will drive you to and fro to as
many or as few nearby destinations as you want to
busy yourself with. It was a godsend to have
someone who could navigate the roads, set up
excursions (and get you best pricing), and have
someone who is steeped in the cultural side of
Costa Rica. He also knows the best beaches and
local restaurants to check out. Unless you are well
versed in how to get around in a Central American
country and driving on roads that are only roads in
the academic sense, hire Elias. You will get so
much more out of your time in Costa Rica.
Chartering a fishing boat, horse back riding, and an
exciting canopy tour were just some of the outings
Elias set up for us.

So whether you like to be -go go go - on your
vacations or you prefer to relax and just -sit sit sit -
Casa Ostional gives you ample opportunities. The
beauty and atmosphere just can not be topped!

Also, Casa Ostional is a great place to get engaged.
Just ask us about it!

It was a great vacation. We could do as little or much as we wanted. It was wonderful having all of our meals and cleaning taken care of. Elias took us to the best beaches and we especially enjoyed soaring through the canopy.
I highly recommend this house!

"Pura Vida" - This common greeting response in Costa Rica truly reflects what it is like to be at Casa Ostional: Pure Life.

Wake up to sun light and the sounds of howler monkeys...

Once awake - and still lying in bed - look past your toes and see the Pacific Ocean. Yup - that's the view...

And then the day gets rolling with as much or as little of what you may want to do. Pristine beaches, horse-back riding, zip lines, deep-sea fishing... or just sitting at the porch with an Imperial (local beer) in hand.

It just rocks.

This phenomenal experience was not only possible because of the location, design and openness of the house itself, but also by the local friends who so graciously enriched us during our stay.

Rosario and Luis - amazing chefs, phenomenal property care-takers and incredible people. A joy to be around.

Elias - a tremendous guide, driver and newfound friend. As Chris and Spencer write in their review, he is the ultimate connection to a fun, affordable, and grass-roots Costa Rican travel experience.

Overall, we cannot say enough great things about Casa Ostional, about the overall environment and culture, and about the people who took such great care of us while we were experiencing one of the best trips yet.

And for the record: We miss Panchito too.

Enjoy your time at Casa Ostional! There are few places like it in this world...

What a holiday! Pictures or a summary cannot possibly do it justice. From the breathtakingly beautiful sunsets over the Pacific Ocean viewed from your balcony (which we tried never to miss) to the exotic flora and fauna we got to experience hands-on in our own back yard! An armadillo visited the yard every day during our first week stay, which thrilled los ninos! We also got to observe a multitude of the most interesting insects and colorful butterflies. When Luis and Rosario (I get choked up thinking about them) saw our interest in animals, they went out of their way to lead us to congos that were close by and to point out different birds, insects, lizards, etc.!! They even took us down to the farm to show us newborn puppies, piglets and baby chicks.

About the food! Luis and Rosario went above and beyond their duties to accommodate our needs and make breakfast, lunch and supper exciting and an experience in itself. On top of the fresh and tasty Costa Rican food that they served us, they also prepared pasta, steak and potatoes, hamburgers and pancakes (for the boys) and we enjoyed a BBQ on our last night! I don't have the words to describe how this couple touched our hearts.

About our activities! We visited ALL the beaches in the area, including Samara. All of them were unique and beautiful! Each one had its own character and flavor. Playa Pelada was our favorite as only a few footprints could be seen across the white sand beach and the boogyboarding there was great! (And, shelling as well.) At Playa Guiones we took surfing lessons and in Nosara we went on the Miss Sky canopy tour.

Luis set up horseback riding for us... we woke up, had breakfast, and mounted horses minutes later at the gate. Unbelievable! On another day we were inquiring about directions to Nosara River for fishing. Luis didn't give us directions... he led us there! He also picked up some shiners from his amigo for bait. We enjoyed it so much that we went again, and this time Rosario came along and showed us how to fish with traditional reels. We bought a few reels in Nosara and fished for the rest of the day.

Thank you for opening up your home to us and providing us with the opportunity to experience a dream for a holiday. I know soon our memories of Costa Rica will fade but the difference that Luis and Rosario made in our lives and the memory of them will never disappear!
