Description from owner

Looking for a Mountain Cabin Rental or affordable family Vacation Rental? You found one of the most unique and special places in San Diego -- simply the cutest Palomar Mountain Cabin rental around!

We are not a business, rather a family-oriented vacation home made available to others... so our rates are discounted compared to most mountain resorts (like distant Idyllwild Cabins, crowded Big Bear "cabins" or pricey Lake Arrowhead mountain mansions). CABIN RENTAL RATES = From $95 (upstairs only - weekends), from $65 weekdays.

The Lilacs cabin is quiet, comfortable, really cute with lots of atmosphere. This Redwood cabin was hand-built in the 1920's and is beautifully restored with lots of period nic-knacks... yet it has all the modern conveniences like dishwasher, stove, large frig, washer/dryer, coffee maker and microwave.

ESCAPE THE CITY ~ EXPERIENCE the SEASON in a Mountain Cabin rental! The Lilacs Cabin is at the 5300 ft elevation, with crystal clear mountain evenings and star-filled skies. Most of Palomar Mountain is in the Cleveland National Forest or part of Palomar Mountain State Park or San Diego County Parks.

Are you looking for week day's = From just $65 a night upstairs (in off season).

Compiled by PalomarMountainCabin.c-- The Lilacs Cabin was once part of the Bailey family homestead, but now has separate ownership. Homesteaded in 1888 this was the center of Palomar town-ship life with a post office, soda fountain, dance hall, general store and hotel. Today city dwellers, like the Native Americans before them, wanted to get away from the semi-arid summer heat or enjoy the seasons in the lush pines and oak groves. As a result, by the early 1920s the Baileys build a few hand-crafted cabins including the Lilacs, built for grandma;

“Great Cabin!”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2015

My husband and I stayed in the cabin with my elderly father and 4 children. The cabin was perfect for us! It was clean and full of things for the kids to do. The kids enjoyed the full size arcade game, the board games and the video game in their bedroom. The kitchen was fully stocked with every appliance and there was even a basket full of books to read in the living room. The décor was rustic & woodsy and very cute. The balcony had wooden chairs, a table and a Jacuzzi. It was so peaceful eating out on the balcony and watching the squirrels run around. Great value for your money!

Owner's reply: So appreciate your having chosen us for your Orange County escape. Glad that all ages, 3 generations, enjoyed the cabin. My outside claw foot tub does not qualify as a Jacuzzi, but in the cool pines we feel good. Thanks, Martin

Owner's reply: Diane, glad that our peace and quiet cabin lived up to its reputation. Would love to get some of your photos of the awesome folks in Palomar mountain state Park. reservations@PalomarMountainCabin.c-- Looking forward to having you back again. Martin

“A week in a rustic cabin”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2012

My husband, my Labrador and I stayed in the cabin for 4 nights and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The cabin is at the far end of dirt road. The redwood foundation made for a slant to the floor. The 1920's fireplace was the jewel - we kept a cozy fire going each evening. The furntiure was comfy, the kitched was equipped with lots of pots, pans, dishes, etc. Considering the remoteness and the age, I was delighted to find a clean cabin, with not one critter such as spiders ot mice. My dog was delighted to run leash free on the dirt road without a worry of a passing car. We hiked at the Observatory and the State Park nearby and made a day trip to Julian for pie. There were many other trails to explore for anyone else who is interested in hiking.

Owner's reply: Thanks Jill, Love to have the three of you back again for more "peace and quiet". So glad your hiking adventures were so rewarding - there certainly is a lot of natural beauty to explore. We appreciate that you all left the cabin looking tidy too and will send you your security check back. Hope you come back to the Lilacs in other seasons too. Martin PS: Even though there are no cars, in and around the cabin we do not encourage "Leash free" pups just out of respect for the tame wildlife and the comfort of area residents.

“Cozy and lovely”

This was a great place to stay for a reunion with some good friends. The only part that was disconcerting was the very steep staircase to the loft bedroom. The steps were narrow and there was no bannister. Great place and friendly welcoming staff.

Owner's reply: Thank you Pamela, I do my best to forewarn that the loft, my son's favorite place to sleep and hang out for quiet time, is for hardy youth or adaptable young adults. It is meant for an overflow space and I never counted it as a bedroom (even though it has a queen matress in the rafters). The ladder is super strong and sturdy with notched hand holds, but I can see that some people would find it a bit too adventurous. I will consider another hand hold or two to ease the transition... your good ideas are appreciated! Thanks again for your review and hope to have you back again soon and resting in one of the other 3 queen-size beds or the sofa bed upstairs. Martin

“Rev. & Mrs. Choi”

This cabin is right place I wanted. It was bulted longer than my age, I can felt the long voyage of times. the redwoods and oak trees cover the roof and sky. But I enjoyed innunerable stars between leaves. I had memorable my seventy's time at this small, cuzzy and quiet wooden cabin. My mind and soul be refresh and warmed up. This is the best gift of my kid's.

Owner's reply: Rev. & Mrs. Choi, What could be nicer than to hear that your soul was warmed and refreshed -- and that your this visit to Palomar & the Lilacs was the best gift your children could have given! Thanks for your generous comments, they fill me with warmth too and makes me happy. Hope to see you back with the whole family to enjoy other seasons. Martin

“Great for large families on a budget!”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2012

We were looking for somewhere to go that was not too far yet felt like we were away from the city. Ideally we wanted to go to yosemite but I wanted to stay in a cabin and still have the amenities of home which there were none available for the time we wanted but also they were all over $260 for the ones tbat would accomodate such a large group. Also, having a 4yr old, the 6-8 hr drive to yosemite was not gonna work out very well! So, I kept looking til I came across Mr Martin's lil gem! I loved the look from the minute I saw it! And it was soo easy to book, he was very nice and told me where we should go, etc. When we arrived the caretaker, Sue was there to greet us and she was awesome! A lovely lady! She was very hospitable and attentive during our stay which was great. Now, if you are expecting luxury and an extra clean cabin, DO NOT go there. Because it is soo old and all wood there are several spiders that go in from time to time and there are a few cobwebs that you might have to get rid of yourself but as for us, we didnt mind that at all. Also, it looks small from the outside however it is soo spacious inside! You can easily and comfortably fit up to probably 12 people there! We were all just soo happy to be able to go somewhere! We got to really reconnect as a family by playing board games and watching movies. The only downer to the trip was that we were hoping to find a nice clear river to swim in and the river or creeks around there were green! 8-/ We did however get to go on a couple of great hikes while we were there and will be going back! So, thanks again Martin for sharing your lil gem in the forest!

Owner's reply: Would love to have you back with all your happy family! Thanks for your "gem in the forest" glowing review of our atmosphere. ... and as for the little critters, Yes, it is true I do not use any insecticides, but by the next time you come I will have the cobwebs under control. We are doing deep cleaning, while keeping the rustic, authentic nature of this 1920's cabin alive. We will strive for 5 STAR RUSTIC LUXURY with 5 Star hospitality without any hint of Hilton luxury except the free bottle of wine and super clean sheets and towels. Look forward to hosting your next Feel-far-away, get-away in the mountains - perhaps to catch the Fall colors or the winter snows! Martin PS: I discourage more than 8-10 people unless you have some very special retreat after we have spoken.

With every turn going up the mountain, I could feel myself enter a quieter world, When we arrived at the cabin, it took me back to childhood memories of summer vacations in similar rustic cabins with my family Being high above our daily lives, in the midst of trees and rocks was so refreshing. With out the distraction of cellphones and internet, conversations and silence became more meaningful. It's certainly a cozy place to rekindle love and enjoy the simple pleasures that create wonderful memories.

“Lilac Cabin on Palomar Mt.”

Reviewed 10 Mar 2011

Snowy weekend made it a bit difficult to get to the cabin. A neighbor's vehicle was stuck in the drive leading to the cabin so we had to haul all of our belongings quite a way...overall we had a good time. Fireplace was great...rest of the cabin needs a little tender loving care and deep cleaning. The propane ran out but owner did his best and had some delivered by night fall. I think it would be much more enjoyable in the spring and summer.
