About the area

Two of the best boulangeries in Paris are just a block or two away. The open air market at the end of the street is in the Top Ten in Paris. Vibrant nightlife is just a block away on rue Roquette and other nearby streets. Many top spots in Paris are just minutes away by foot. Place des Vosges, home to French kings and Victor Hugo, is 8 minutes away, Centre Georges Pompidou is 15, and Notre Dame Cathedral is just 20. Traveling light and needing to do laundry? Two laundromats are just around the corner and have instructions in English. Looking for a unique French taste? The absinthe bar, La Fee Verte, is the next block over and has a suite of their own absinthes. Intrigued by the past? Pere Lachaise is one of the most famous cemeteries in the world and has the graves of a wide variety of famous people including: Honoré de Balzac, Sarah Bernhardt, Frederic Chopin, Yves Montand, Jim Morrison, and Marcel Proust. Enjoy people watching? The Place Bastille is vibrant and full of surprises, from often friendly marching strikers to the thousands of rollerbladers streaming through on various Friday nights. The summer solstice offers music and live performance all over Paris, but it's especially lively throughout the Bastille where the whole neighborhood becomes a festival.

“Just Perfect!”

Reviewed 13 Oct 2016

This apartment has everything you need and is in an ideal location. It is in easy walking distance to all sorts of places, such as the Marais, Pere Lachais cemetery, and metro stops. The Louvre, Notre Dame and other destinations are a bit of a longer (but still doable) walk or an easy metro ride. There is a fantastic farmer's market twice a week at the end of the street. We particularly liked the neighborhood, which is diverse and more low-key than some of the more touristy areas. Cafes were plentiful and reasonable! The apartment itself is quite comfortable and has everything you need, including a full library of Paris guide books in English. We'll be back!

“Great location and place!”

Great place in a terrific and convenient location. Our best meal was a block away at Cafe l'Industrial and our favorite bakery was across the street from there. Metro is 2 blocks away and the outdoor market running above the metro line is wonderful. We LOVED the whole experience!

Owner's reply: Great to have you as a guest. We'll have even more bakeries (boulangeries) and cafes for you to try on your next visit. New ones seem to be opening up all the time.

“Back for a second stay”

Reviewed 1 Jun 2015

We had the good fortune to stay at this apartment on a second visit to Paris. We were also lucky enough to spend two entire weeks there. The location is perfect for going almost anywhere in the city. With a second trip, we had the luxury of knowing the neighborhood so we could explore each street in more depth. We didn't have a "checklist" of sights, but could just wander any direction at any corner, depending on what looked intriguing that day. We are not night people by custom, but we finished two nights at the absinthe bar. We loved the two boulangeries, and found special treats at the Algerian pastry shop -- miniature works of edible art! Many days started with an easy walk to the Seine, or to the Marais; we had a lovely afternoon on the viaduct-turned-park-and-artists'-studios behind the Opera Bastille. The apartment became a perfect "home away from home" for us. The owners of this apartment are in love with Paris, in love with travel, and completely engaging with their guests! They accommodated our schedules, anticipated our needs, and gave helpful directions with the trains from Charles de Gaulle. They recommended nearby cafes and a lovely wine shop. The human interaction made all the difference in making our plans. Caution: You may be at risk of creating a new friendship!

Owner's reply: Merci beaucoup! You captured the essence of our lives there perfectly.

“A delightful refuge in the garment district”

The two of us came for the Christmas holiday. Great location (excellent bistro -- Cafe Truc -- around the corner), close to Bastille; very comfortable; well-equipped. Building exterior is misleading (typical for Paris) -- the apartment is very pleasant and well appointed. Emphasis on eco-friendly products. Bathroom has been upgraded since we were here, along with several other improvements. (Should be an "excellent" now.) An excellent pied-a-terre for exploring Paris and environs. We thoroughly enjoyed our week here. Owners are easy to deal with and do a fabulous job of maintaining the apartment. We'll be back.

Owner's reply: Thank you, Tony! We hope you can come back soon.

“Great apartment with comfort, calm, convenience”

Reviewed 31 May 2015

The apartment was perfect for us in so many ways. It had every amenity we needed for cooking light evening meals and preparing a quick petit dejeuner. I was surprised at how quiet the apartment was at night. I am a light sleeper, but the comfortable bed and the lack of city noise had me sleeping like a baby. Wifi access was also excellent and the selection of books was really helpful for planning our next day's outings. But what was best of all was where the apartment was located. The Bastille area was one of the first neighborhoods we stayed in many years ago when first visiting Paris and it is still our favorite after many years of visits. The Marais, Ile St Louis, the Left Bank, Luxembourg Gardens, Canal St Martin are all within easy walking distance. To us, Paris is the perfect walking city -- we rarely take the metro though it is just a very brief walk from the apartment. We can easily spend 5 hours per day walking and being able to come 'home' to the calm serenity of the apartment and relax with a cup of tea was our idea of a perfect vacation. Convenient, clean, comfortable, central, calm are just a few of the words that describe it. We are so grateful to have had this opportunity to stay here and for a brief moment in time, experience what it might be like to live in Paris. We will return. C'est magnifique!

Owner's reply: Thank you, Colleen. We appreciate the time you took to write a review and hope that your third visit is even better!

“A superbly located and well appointed pied a terre”

Reviewed 30 May 2015

My husband and I have stayed for three summers in a row (for about 8 days each time) at this lovely little apartment on a quiet street in the neighborhood of the Bastille (11th arrondissement). We have loved its location within walking distance of the Seine and Notre Dame Cathedral. The grocery store (Carrefour) is right across the street, and the Market of the Bastille, one of the best in Paris, is held down the street twice a week. The apartment has a bedroom with a queen bed and a living area, kitchenette with a sofa bed. The building is quiet. We are going again this summer!

Owner's reply: Merci beacoup, Anne. We're so glad that you both feel so much at home.

“Great Experience”

Reviewed 29 May 2015

My longtime hoped for trip to Paris was great, thanks in large part to being able to stay in this comfortable little apartment. The location is perfect; within a 2 - 3 blocks of the Bastille, major metro lines, major bus routes, great boulangeries and cafes, a really good wine store and across the street from a grocery store. The twice a week open market 2 blocks away is a fantastic place for fresh food and almost anything else you could want. The apartment allowed me to cook meals at times with fresh food from the market and save a bit of money, which helps if on a budget. The location is also close to a great walk along the Promenade Plantée, the start of the St. Martin canal boat tour, and withing reasonable walking distance to sites such as Notre Dame. It was everything I had hoped for.

Owner's reply: It was such a treat to be able to meet you ourselves in Paris the day you left and to have lunch together. We're so glad that our advice helped you with your first trip and delighted that you're coming back for a much longer stay this Fall.

“Wonderful apartment in Bastille”

Reviewed 29 May 2015

My daughter and I spent a week here, and it was our first trip to Paris. I highly recommend this apartment! We had a wonderful time, the apartment was great, the owner was fabulous. The property was just as described, and we felt like real Parisians! It was great coming "home", after a day of exploring. We took the Metro everywhere, even at night. We enjoyed wine from the local wine shop, bread from down the street. There is an open air market a couple days a week just down the street. On Saturday, at the same location, was an art fair. We will be back!

Owner's reply: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to having you back at our home away from home.
