“Comforts of home in off the beaten path location”

Reviewed 25 Feb 2017

My husband and I just finished a wonderful stay with Roger and Carmen at Playas Gringos. The location is a short 2 block walk to the beach and outdoor restaurants serving an abundance of fresh seafood and Ecuadorian dishes. The neighbourhood is full of Ecuadorian families who go about their daily lives take time to say 'Buenos Dias' to passersby. We felt completely safe and relaxed in the area. Our hosts shared insight into the local customs and culture as well as great suggestions for a day trip to Montanita. Our excellent driver Erik made sure we didnt miss the outstanding vista at the Chocolaterier lookout point - the most western landmark in South American with a picturesque coast line that rivals all others. Our mornings were spent sipping Ecuadorian coffee in the courtyard garden at the house, wandering the beach in the afternoon, a walk up to the shops and vendors for fresh fruit, yogurt and breads followed by refreshments at local restaurants or expat hangouts. Roger and Carmen offer a little more history and insight into authentic Ecuadorian life than your typical tourist experience. Bring your shorts, t-shirt, swimsuit and a curious mind - this is a unique vacation free or worry. Next time we plan to stay longer!

“Great place for a relaxing vacation”

Reviewed 6 Feb 2017

The site was fantastic, really natural with lots of different birds like peacocks, flamingo, gooses, etc. Site is beautifully landscaped with sidewalks and little bridges. The buffet and restaurants were all serving excellent foods and enough variation for a week's vacation. The beach was long, clean and with beautiful white sand. Great if if you enjoy really long walks. Although the room we had was sufficient for our needs, with a little balcony where we had a little drink each night before bedtime, the room needed a bit of updating. Nevertheless, it was a great vacation. I do recommend this resort if you like the slow pace and a quiet vacation.

The host is friendly, helpful and went out of her way to make me comfortable with the area. The accommodations were clean, nice and spacious and just a 2 minute walk to the beach and a 10 minute walk to a large supermarket in the mall. The unit also had some cooking ability for basics as well as a refrigerator. It was also close to the main street through the town and there was secure parking for one vehicle. I enjoyed a very pleasant relaxing stay. There needs to be a TV in the room though to catch up on international news daily.

Owner's reply: Thanks for your kind words. As for television, we have found that our guests use their tablets and laptops for their entertainment and information needs. We have reliable Internet and Wi-Fi.

“Comfortabel accomodation”

Wonderful hosts. Nice spot within walking distance to restaurants, town square and beach. No air con so it was hot for sleeping but we were told that it was the hottest summer in 20 years.

“A second home”

This location is an oasis for travelers who want to experience real life with Ecuadorians. No five star hotel, no breakfast in bed.... Thank goodness! Comfortable, clean, and safe, my husband & I were the only gringos in town, and we were greeted with warmth and smiles everywhere we went. Roger and his lovely wife were helpful whenever we had questions, but they also let us carve out our own adventures. And the beach is welcoming and warm! If you want to capture the real flavor of life for Ecuadorians, this is a great place to stay!

I went alone,Carmen met me at the airport at 1am along with their trusty taxi driver Eric.I stayed there for 2 months and I had no problems at all.Although I couldn't speak Spanish Carmen guided me and we became friends. She introduced me to her friends and also the Ex-pat group, and we would go shopping together, and we would go out to various places. The housekeeping suite was kept spotless, and her garden was lovely. I would recommend this establishment to anyone be it a family or like me,solo. I would hope that we will remain friends, and I want to keep returning to Playas and "Gringoville " for as long as my health and check book allow me too.

“Great place to stay”

We were there for a month. Roger and Carmen are wonderful hosts. The room was adequate for our needs. Carmen was an angel accompanying me to the clinic when I strained my back and insisted we stay an extra day in order for me to heal up better. The patio area is comfortable. The bed and room were also quite comfortable. Playas is a nice quiet town (except on the weekends) so don't look for too many amenities or any high end restaurants, though we did find a few nice places to eat. We would definitely return.

“The Best!”

I stayed the entire month of June with Roger and Carmen and had a wonderful time. The unit I stayed in was very roomy and had everything I needed. Roger and Carmen are great, too! Roger had a map all ready for me as well as a "cheat sheet" of Spanish phrases. Staying with them gave me the opportunity to experience Ecuador as a native. I went to the beach almost everyday and walked all over Playas. I felt safe the entire time I was in Ecuador. If I do go back to Ecuador in the future, I will try to stay with Roger and Carmen. They are sweet people.

“Caring Hosts in a small beach town”

Reviewed 13 May 2013

Playas was part of my 6 week solo trip as a senior. Roger and Carmen provided a safe and welcoming place for me to celebrate my 7Oth B-day. The room was clean and included a private bath, small refrigerator and an alcove kitchen for fixing simple meals .TV and books were available in the comfortable courtyard sitting area. The location was great for walking along the malecon to the new Mall with oceanview seating for the food court! Roger was very considerate and picked me up at the bus terminal. He also gave me a ride to a local restaurant I would have never found on my own. I enjoyed a gourmet B-Day lunch of creamy risotto and coconut shrimp for under $10! Later that evening Roger and Carmen invited me upstairs to their home for birthday cake and tea. So sweet! When I needed a taxi for the trip`from Playas to Salinas once again Roger willingly made these arrangements for me. During my stay I felt well cared for on a daily basis.

“Off the Beaten Path Experience”

Reviewed 27 Feb 2013

This accommodation suited our tastes for an 'authentic' and 'off the beaten path' experience of Ecuador. The apartment was clean and equipped with fridge and coffee maker for easy breakfast-time in the garden. Location is easy access to shops, markets and panoramic beach. The proprietor was friendly, highly informative and able to share a personal experience of Ecuador and recommend other suitable places to visit. We stayed one week but would have gladly stayed a month if we had the vacation time! We will definitely return. If you are seeking an authentic Ecuadorian experience, this is a perfect place to learn, see, listen, and absorb Ecuador.
