Description from owner

Nestled among huge Doug Firs, retreat to a private garden oasis in a busy neighborhood.

Visually protected, the space offers luxurious solitude & intimacy for two.

Your private hot tub, studio, personal kitchen, TV & more.

LGBTQ Friendly

The Space:

From a guest: "When my friends asked me 'How is your rental' I answered 'it's more like a swanky hotel room at the Ritz or a fancy B&B.'. Your studio ranks among the most comfortable rentals I've done, and I've done many."

Our Portland garden apartment is a studio space dedicated to couples. You will be charmed by the enclosed personal garden area with bird feeders, mature landscaping and old growth 100 ft+ tall Doug Firs, complete with hammock and garden swing. The private hot tub is located between the camellia and andromeda trees just off the deck and offers views of the garden.

This is a romantic hideaway for lovers, honeymooners, travelers and visitors passing through to one of our beach homes ...or for folks visiting the Portland area for any reason.

You have your own entrance, separate off street parking on the circular drive and is completely private from the rest of the property.

With one fourth of an acre dedicated to the garden studio, you will find that you have lots of visual privacy in a large area to call your own. We offer rural surroundings in an urban setting on a fairly busy street. You will be visually private, but expect some traffic noise, especially during rush hours.

A Light Footprint

In creating our “Garden Apartment”, one of our goals was to recycle and re-purpose as much as possible. We had fun doing it and thought we’d share this list with our guests:

*The masonry for the patio came from a Portland school when they updated.

*The rocks that surround the patio were buried in the gardens here from the ‘50s.

*The decking was removed from Rob’s brother’s house (with permission:) and reinstalled.

*The deck framing and masonry supports came from a Craig’s List ad - the owners were re-designing their back yard.

*The hot tub came from another Craig’s List ad – the super nice owners were moving and couldn’t take it along. PS moving the hot tub was fun.

*The ceiling in the apartment is original. We removed the sheetrock, painted the beams, and left the fir attic decking alone. If you look carefully at the ceiling you’ll see the blue grading marks on the lumber from 1945 or so: 3,3,3,2,3 etc

*The wood frames inside the wall niches came from old cedar barn wood.

*In early 2015, we installed a photovoltaic solar panel system on the roof. You can’t see it from the driveway or the guest side of the house, but it produces enough electricity to power almost all the needs of the house, including the hot tub.

We try to not use any herbicides, and recycle just about everything that the recycling people will take.

We are directly on the #78 bus route, with a bus stop right outside our driveway.

WHAT WE DON'T OFFER: Laundry Facilities

Enjoy a true Portland Experience at the Spin Laundry Lounge, Portland's only eco-friendly laundromat. Cross laundry off your to-do list while you drink a microbrew, catch up on your email (free WiFi), have a snack from the cafe or even play an arcade game while you wait. State of the art machines, that will even text message you when your laundry is done! It's a bit of a drive from the garden apartment 15-20 minutes) but it's a Portland experience you will want to share with your friends when you get home!

About the area

What used to be a farm community is now a sprawling mix of neighborhoods with construction from the 40's to the new builds of today. We are located in the Far Southwest neighborhood of Portland in the area where three counties meet, close to Lake Oswego and Tigard. Our 'walkable score' is fairly low, as there are no sidewalks and few bike paths. You will need a car. However, just under a mile away restaurants, stores, pubs and restaurants, grocery stores, liquor stores, public parks and more are located. Trimet City bus stops at our driveway and Car2Go is a short walk away. Uber and Lyft operate in the Portland area as well. If you want to rent a car, we can direct you to a rental place in our neighborhood who will offer you a rate of $26/day, with no high airport tax.
