Description from owner

Within the quaint little fishing village called Bauline, there sat an old home that required a lot of TLC with endless opportunities to renovate and bring it back to a beautiful home. That is exactly what we have done with the Saltbox.

This charming Saltbox style cottage is located in a small out port called Bauline. Bauline is located at the base of a 1000-foot high mountain where publicly groomed trails will lead you to the summit. This quaint and very clean, ocean front century home has a lovely western view of Conception Bay and the village's lobster/crab fishing port. Sunsets in Bauline are spectacular, especially while sipping on a cocktail on your own private, 300 square foot patio. Beside the property is a babbling brook that will serenade you to blissful slumber.

Originally built in 1892, the Saltbox is carefully renovated to accommodate modern amenities however; we have attempted to keep a lot of the original character. Notice the stairs leading to the second floor are worn by over 100 years of traffic.

Highlights of the Saltbox:

The Saltbox is a 1500 square foot, 2 story century home on the ocean. This home can sleep up to 4 maximum with 2 bedrooms.

Some of the highlights include:

Second floor:

One full bath, master bedroom facing the ocean with new extra plush king size bed, luxurious down-filled duvet, ultra soft linens, guest bedroom facing the harbour, with two twin, extra long beds.

First floor:

Powder room, washer, dryer, wireless internet, cable TV, VCR, stereo, large private 300 square foot deck with great panoramic ocean views, with outdoor patio furniture, 2 Muskoka lounge chairs with foot stools, and BBQ. Bright, clean kitchen with breakfast nook, large beautiful antique dining room with seating for 6, and a large living room with windows offering a magnificent view of the ocean from all angles, and a wood-stove. We also offer a fun collection of movies, east coast music and books for you to enjoy.

Beds: 1 King Bed, 2 Twin Beds, 1 Sofa Bed

About the area

In Bauline NFLD there are many fun, beautiful and interesting things to do. We have listed some local things to do within walking distance from the Saltbox and some very useful suggestions for St. John’s and the surrounding area. You will see that the city of St. John’s is very rich in culture, history, arts and entertainment. Iceberg & Whale Watching: Right from your own private deck you can kick back on a lounge chair, sip on a glass of wine and watch as icebergs and whales pass by. They are in abundance during the months of July and early August especially. Fresh Water Swimming Hole: Located 2 km up the road with a sandy beach and picnic tables. Great for the whole family. The water is very clean and great to enjoy a day of swimming in. Fishing: For all of you fishing fanatics, make sure you bring your gear. Talk to the locals about the fantastic fishing opportunities, they are only too happy to help. You can fish for some tasty “brown trout” in the fishing hole just up the street and catch your evening meal. Or, cast a line off of the rocky point at the little harbor, just a stones throw away and catch some interesting ocean treats. Hiking: Take an invigorating walk to the summit of a 1000-foot high mountain right behind you. There are trails that will lead you to the top but please keep in mind that the path can be quite treacherous at times, it is a great cardio workout for you fitness enthusiasts and please be sure to bring lots of water and perhaps even a light snack to sit and enjoy the view. The hike takes approximately 3 hours up and down. Ask the villagers for directions. Enjoy the local Fishing Community: Bauline is a small, very active fishing village with many of the residents relying heavily on the daily catch to support their livelihood. Throughout the year, if you time it right, you can enjoy different ocean delicacies that are in season such as crab, lobster, squid, and if you are lucky, perhaps some other fresh “catch of the day”. The local fishermen are a very friendly bunch, strike up a conversation and share in some interesting, entertaining stories. Running, Walking and Fitness: For any running-enthusiast, we challenge you to take the “Bauline Line” hill challenge! It is the road that you take to the Saltbox which doesn’t seem too steep when you are driving down but wait until you start walking / running up! It is a great challenge for anyone looking for that extra “shock” to the system. For those of you who would like to enjoy this walk at a more leisurely pace, please make sure to bring water and don’t push it too hard. You will see we also have a light bar bell weight set and fitness videos in the living room, please feel free to use them. Berry Picking: Bauline has a 1000 foot mountain that surrounds our tiny village and at the base of this mountain, there are beautiful fields full of assorted berries that are 100% edible. Hikers will quickly notice the wide variety of berries. Cranberries, Bake-apples, Blueberries and Partridge berries are abundant and have traditionally made up an important part of the Newfoundland diet. Whale, Bird & Iceberg Watching Tours: There are many boat tour operators in Newfoundland. East Coast Trail, fishing harbor, hike the mountain, swimming in the pond, whale and iceburg watching, berry picking Within a 10 minute drive to Torbay, Portugal Cove, Pouch Cove

“perfect in every way”

From the time we entered the red door to this amazing rental we were drawn into its unique appeal. This rental is decorated with many crafts all of which connect you with Newfoundland. Replicas of brightly painted salt boxes, a ships wheel, beautiful paintings of ships at sea, lighthouses that hold tea lights that shine from night windows and lamps that hold surprises. Everything to remind yourself that you are really here in this charming place called Bauline. The scenery is amazing from every window which calls you to explore the many trails, the many rocks, and the wonderful people you will meet along the way. The house was bright and cheery even on the dull days when the wind pulled waves upon the rocks and the wind called for you to come and watch. This house so tastefully painted inside and out is more than I ever expected it to be and to only give it a 5 star rating seems unfair. I would not give it less than a 10. Look at the pictures they tell it like it is,.......totally wonderful.

Owner's reply: Dear Connie, Thank you for the wonderful feedback....your description could not be more accurate and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our saltbox. We hope you will return again in the future, Sincerely, Francine, Rob and Alexandra

Pleasant stay. Comfortable beds, lots of hot water. If you are looking to get away from the city noise for some peace and quietness, this is the perfect place. More so, if the sun is shining....beautiful sunsets. It's about a 20 minute drive to the outskirts of the east side of St. John's (airport). An old house with very low ceilings and a little creaky, but very comfortable.

Owner's reply: This heritage home has kept its original structure and has been beautifully renovated with an east coast feel. As with all Newfoundland heritage homes, ceilings are a bit lower, however this house has brand new pine wood ceilings, new walls, some new floors (the original stairs and second floor hall were too beautiful and authentic to cover up), all in keeping with the Maritime style of the saltbox. If you are looking for an authentic east coast feel, you will truly enjoy what this home has to offer.

Michele's Review:
Having never travelled out east before we were really excited to go to Newfoundland. After an exhaustive online search we came across Rob and Francine's Saltbox. The description and pictures online were amazing and when we arrived they were so accurate. The cottage was bright and clean . Its closer to the ocean then you think. Sitting on their deck watching the sunset over the Atlantic was beautiful. The location of the cottage is perfect, 15 minutes away from the airport and St. John's. yet when you're in Bauline you feel like your hours away from the city. The east coast trail is minutes away from the Saltbox where we enjoyed hiking and picking wild blueberries and raspberries! The Saltbox is the perfect location to travel the Irish Loop, Portugal Cove, Signal Hill and Cape Spear. It was nice to come home to the cottage after a full day of site seeing and hiking, making a fire and dinner. The kitchen was also well stocked. We look forward to going back next year as the accommodations were perfect. Thank again Rob and Francine for sharing your Saltbox with us.

Andy's Review:
There are many wonderful sites in Newfoundland however the Saltbox was our favorite! The Saltbox is spotlessly clean, a beautifully decorated home with spectacular view of the ocean. Our host Desmond provides a warm Newfoundlander greeting that makes you feel at home in an instant! We cannot wait until we return to this lovely Gem on the Rock! A & J Smith, Port Dover, Ontario.

Joy and Paul's Review:
Now that our family has returned to our life on the “mainland” I wanted to send a heartfelt thank you to your family for sharing your beautiful cottage with us. It was evident that the Saltbox is taken care of with much love and appreciation. It really felt like home so much so that it was very hard to leave. We have rented several cottages over the years, however, the Saltbox seemed to have the most unique characteristics that truly complimented its surroundings. Your amazing decorative touch added so much interest to the cottage as beautiful reminders of the amazing culture of the province. Our family was able to make so many wonderful memories that we will carry with us for a lifetime. Already we miss listening to the sounds of the ocean and the feel of the beautiful breeze throughout the cottage. It is our hope to return to Newfoundland again in the near future! Thank you again! I have rented houses in different provinces and enjoyed my stay, but this one took the cake! Not only is the view from the porch spectacular, we saw Minky Whales the day we arrived. The community is breath taking and the house is cozy and full of charm. My husband and I along with our 7 month old rented for 2 weeks. We selected the house based on the reviews and pictures. We where not disappointed. The house is very well appointed and spacious. The livingroom has a thick wool carpet that was perfect for our little Lochlann who is learning to crawl. The beds are very comfortable (hubby and I asked what type of mattress it was so we can get one at home) with an eat in kitchen and a dinning room, we where able to entertain our family that popped into visit. We greatly enjoyed the neighbor's who are the salt of the earth and welcomed us into the community. We also had the pleasure of meeting Desmond, the cottage caretaker who is also a local fisherman. He was kind enough to bring us some fresh cod fish. It felt like home, a truly family oriented relaxing stay. We will be back !

Steve's Review:
We truly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was exactly as described, very comfortable, fully equipped, perfectly clean, and served as an ideal home and base for our holiday. The view from the back deck was great and included two icebergs in the distance for most of the week. There is a local contact who nicely and quickly got us cooking again when we ran out of BBQ propane. We had some friends over for dinner one evening - and it was so nice to have the deck, dinning room, napkins, dishes, ...everything - just made it feel like a home away from home. We had some nice hikes along the east coast trail, but the highlight of our trip was the drive out to Cape St Mary's bird sanctuary. While watching the 1000's of gannets on a sunny warm morning you could also see seals in the surf below and we had 3 humpback whales swim by.

Joseph's Review:
We stayed at the Saltbox this past June and it was a fantastic experience. The home is bright & clean and has a nice library of NFLD books, a wonderful CD collection and more then 40 odd movies (not that we watched much TV). The sunsets on the bay were glorious and the breeze was fresh. Desmond brought us Crab and lobster and we ate on the patio with a 180 degree view of the ocean, whales, icebergs and small fishing boats. The house is mere feet from the water and the small harbor beside us was a continuous source of amusement. The owners have managed to modernize the home while keeping it's 123 year old charm. We climbed the mountain behind the house....hard but so satisfying once you make it and with St. John's only 15 minutes away we managed to visit just about everything on our list including the Irish loop. We dream of coming back again. Thank you!

Gene's Review:
There were four adults in our group and we frequently commented about what a wonderful location the saltbox was. Close to St. Johns, but in a cute fishing village. Many, many things to do in a reasonable driving distance, and the owners have furnished the home with large format television, sound system with huge selection of music, plus a nice library of books and movies. Sit on the deck watching whales, sipping wine, listening to Newfoundland Sounds. What a treat! Though close to the "big city" of St. Johns, we found the locals as engaging and friendly as in other parts of Newfoundland.

James' Review:
Our week at your Salt Box was a Grand Finale to our trip to Newfoundland. The home is comfortable, cozy and all that one would want to get the true Newfoundland experience. It has a marvellous deck overlooking the ocean and is fully equipped for your stay including and excellent BBQ. The highlight was the Canada Day celebration on the Bauline wharf with fantastic music, delicious mussels and fireworks from our deck. This home is ideally situated to access many of the must see sights in the Avalon peninsula. Janet and Jim Finlay Margaret and Roger Kleinsmith

Wendy's Review:
The cottage far exceeded our expectations with every amenity necessary. Your property manager, Desmond, was helpful and delivered us losters one evening on request. Bauline is a lovely, quiet village and our deck views of whales and icebergs were awesome. We enjoyed the short drive into St. John`s and many day trips around Avalon. The O`Brien`s whale and puffin watching boat trip was a highlight. We`ve already recommended the property as it was through friends having stayed there in the past who told us about your cottage. We`d love to return in the future.

Very clean and comfortable with lovely furniture, nice décor. Good kitchen and appliances. Lovely view from the patio. Bauline is 20 minutes from St. John's where there is lots to do. We visited the Rooms, the botanical gardens, the old Commissariat. Loved the restaurants in near by Portugal Cove. Highly recommended.

My mom, sister and I stayed at the Saltbox for my mom's 80th birthday. It's located in a charming little fishing village and it met all of our expectations. It was clean, well decorated, and the views from the deck absolutely breathtaking. Located about 15min to 20 min drive to St. John's the location was perfect. Desmond the caretaker was extremely helpful and so were the other people who lived in the village. This was the most relaxing and enjoyable holiday that I've experienced in a long while and I wouldn't hesitate to reserve again...

Julie's Review:
Our stay at the Saltbox in Bauline was perfect. The house had absolutely everything we needed, and the view was spectacular. We whale watched from the back deck, and were lulled to sleep by the sound of the waterfall. Bauline offered our family a taste of an authentic Newfoundland fishing village experience, yet it was only 25 minutes from the lively festivities, restaurants, shopping and tours that St. John's offers. The local people were warm and wonderful. Although the weather was unseasonably cold, it never stopped us from enjoying the gorgeous landscape. Our children will never forget our long walks up the big hill in the fog. We will cherish these memories forever!

Scarlett's Review:
Fabulous property! It was exactly what we were looking for..to stay in a true Newfoundland house with some history behind it. It exceeded our expectations! Clean as a whistle with more than enough ammenties. We saw Minke and Humpbackwhales from the deck that overlooks the Bay! The sunsets are gorgeous..we would watch tourists coming in by car to set up their cameras and we were already there! Very close to St. John's and Torbay has the big stores to stock up on supplies. We toured the Avalon Penninsula including Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve, Brigus, Cape Separ, Signal Hill, Whale and puffin watching with O'Briens at Witless Bay, Lunch at Yellowbelly's, Avalon Colony dig at Ferryland. Fabulous for a family or couple or a group of adventurous gals or guys! The owners are great to work with and the local caretaker is lovely, with info on the village and crab fishing. He's lived there all his life and his Mum lives up the street! Great experience from beginning to end:)

Kathryn and Eric's Review:
This was our 3rd trip to Bauline. It is a beautifully renovated little saltbox house on Conception Bay. The fishermen and their boats were only a very short walk down to the pier. Plenty of great trails for hiking, 20 minutes to St. Johns and George Street for shopping, restaurants and great pubs. Lots of sight seeing to be done; the Irish Loop, Signal Hill, Cape Spear and more. We had such a wonderful time!
