Prince Edward County is THE hot new vacation spot in Ontario. "The County" has been called "the most European part of Ontario" because of its collection of small hamlets and villages, wineries, fresh meats, fruits and vegetables, and outstanding history. Home of the world-famous Sandbanks Park, you'll find some of the greatest sand beaches anywhere. With several of Toronto's greatest chefs (Jamie Kennedy, the Drake Hotel) now locating here, to go with some of Canada's top winemakers, this is the gourmet's dream. For those looking for a traditional vacation, the swimming, boating, fishing is as good as it gets. It's an ideal spot for biking, golf and pretty well everything - except crowds.

Christine F.:
We had a very memorable week at Hawthorn Cottage. The amenities were excellent and we found everything that we needed was available.

The separate apartment was perfect for our daughter and her two young children and they settled to sleep easily most nights. The little boys had lots of "play space" inside and out and your mini trampoline and elephant in the games room were a big hit.

Although it was hot, we managed to do everything in the county that we had planned. We had three half days at North Beach, visited three wineries, shopped in Wellington, Bloomfield, lunched at East of Main (yummy), wine tasting, enjoyed watching the Olympics and had some wicked Scrabble games.

Overall a perfect family holiday. I expect we will be back in touch again to explore another week next summer.

Easter weekend visit
We were the year's first visitors, and the leaves weren't yet out. The owners were still making some changes - painting and wallpapering, cleaning the yards. Despite this, the visit was excellent. The property is exceptional - a full house, not a cottage - and the water view spectacular. The house - with two entirely separate areas - was perfect for two families sharing. The furnishings were comfortable, and all the appliances new. The deck is huge, with several separate sitting areas. The location is also good - a short drive to Wellington and Bloomfield. A very comfortable place to stay.

Great experience at Hawthorne Cottage!
We stayed at Hawthorne Cottage a few weeks ago over the July Long Weekend. Every year, my friends and I (Toronto and Ottawa) rent a cottage somewhere in the middle and I can definitely say that this year was the nicest and most comfortable place we've stayed in. The house/cottage is split into two areas, so even though there were 8 of us, it never once felt cramped or crowded. The owners really went above and beyond any cottage we've ever stayed in. The view of the lake was amazing, the water was warm and inviting. There was tons of outdoor seating on the deck and also down by the water, which was great for watching sunsets. It's on a very quiet road and about a 10 minute drive to Trenton, where there were tons of stores for anything we needed. We would definitely return again to this cottage, actually we might book it now to ensure we get a space for next year :) Sarah.

Perfect place for a vacation & venue
We are from Texas and it was our first time to ever been on that side of Canada. We were looking for a place to stay for my Sister's wedding last July and we are so happy that my brother-in-law found you and we were able to book you in time for the special occasion. It is a magical place! I personally love your backyard and your garden. It was the perfect place for a family vacation! We wish to visit again in the future. I took alot of beautiful pictures of your cottage. Let me know if you want copies of them.

We have greatly enjoyed our family vacation (two kids) at Hawthorne Cottage! The house is great and accommodating . The backyard is awesome with plenty of space for kids to run and play games. There is a great seating by the lake shore where nice breeze cools down hot summer days. Loved it and recommend to all considering..!!

Family Weekend
We stayed at this cottage on the long family day weekend. It had everything we could have possibly needed for a terrific stay. We liked that we didn't have to worry about bringing sleeping bags, pillows or air mattresses because everything was provided. It came with a fully equipped kitchen as well which made meal preparation very easy! The listing description was accurate, There was ample space for a family....lots to do.....at the cottage and in the area. We enjoyed the local wineries, breweries and distilleries. As well at the cottage there was a games room with lots of activities for children. We were lucky because the lake was frozen so we were able to skate. It would be a great place to stay in the summer as well. Lots of outdoor space right on the water. We would highly recommend this spacious, clean cottage with lots of amenities to everyone.

Perfect Vacation!
This is the perfect cottage for two families to rent. Plenty of room for kids and adults to spread out and do their own activities or do nothing at all, both outside and in. The cottage itself was spotless and well stocked. The gardens and lakefront were absolutely beautiful. A short drive to many great wineries, Wellington, Bloomfield and even Sandbanks.

A definite plus is that good quality bed linens as well as after departure cleaning are included in the rental. No need to spend the last hours of your holiday doing the cleaning.

I would highly recommend this cottage and would, without hesitation, look to rent Hawthorn Cottage again for my next stay in the area.

Fabulous cottage. Great owner!
We spent an amazing week at Hawthorn Cottage with our extended family. I was there with my husband, 10 month old son, my parents and my sister's family with her twin five year-olds.

The layout of this cottage is a little bit quirky - it actually kind of feels like two cottages stuck together, with two separate wings. This works perfectly for two families, as you have a lot of privacy (and screaming babies don't wake the others!). We were also thankful that it was a bungalow with plenty of space to play and no stairs to fall down. The front lawn is huge and is ideal for games and crawling around. It is an amazing set up for young families.

The property itself is beautiful and very well located. It is close to North Beach Provincial park, as well as a number of wineries. We had expected to spend more time in Picton, Sandbanks and Bloomfield, but the cottage itself was so nice that we did not venture too far most days.

Tom is a conscientious owner who is very accommodating and always looking for ways to improve the experience of his renters. He was a pleasure to work with. The cottage was clean, well equipped and has a great vibe. We will be back next summer, if not before!

Thanks for a great week!

happy memories
Had an awesome week at Hawthorne Cottage . We were 5 adults and 3 children ages 7/4/2 yrs. The layout of the cottage is great for two families with younger children. We had everything we could possibly need from the appliances, cooking needs, comfortable beds, hot showers etc and this was wonderful. The large waterfront yard was perfect for games of soccer, baseball, football, Frisbee and water squirters! Likewise on the rare occasion we were indoors - the availability of board games, WII and a big screen TV to keep up with the Pan Am games was a bonus plus access to the internet was useful for those needing to check in on work projects. The location near Consecon provided easy day trips to North Beach , Sandbanks beach and the adults enjoyed some wine tasting at the local wineries. Our host was very obliging and we felt quite welcome and " at home" in this lovely cottage. I highly recommend this vacation site for families wanting so spend some quality time together.

Great Family Cottage
Our extended family (six adults, two children) stayed at Hawthorn Cottage for a week. Lots of space for everyone, comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen were very much appreciated. Great deck overlooking the lawn and the water. Lots of space for the kids to play. Hawthorn is ideally located to explore the County and handy to North Beach if you want a sandy swimming beach. Thanks for a great time.

Jessica G.:
Perfect Cottage Getaway with Family and Friends
We spent two wonderful weeks at Hawthorne Cottage. The first week was spent with our extended family - both sets of grandparents and our two children (ages 2 and 4). For the second week, the grandparents left and our friend's family moved in with their three children (ages 18 m, 3.5 and 6). The cottage was incredibly well-stocked (more so than our own home!) with endless dishes and glassware, good quality appliances, large capacity washer/dryer, great quality linens, comfortable beds, a hammock, loads of outdoor seating, a campfire pit and even two bbqs. The property was absolutely beautiful and very spacious for lots of time spent playing outside with the kids. There was even a horseshoe pit and a golf mat/net for practice. We did take the kids swimming at the cottage (water shoes suggested), but also spent a lot of time at close by North Beach which we found to be much less busy than Sandbanks. We went kayaking at the cottage as well (brought our own kayaks) which was wonderful and calm. The kids didn't mind being dragged around to the areas wineries as well - especially those equipped with trampolines (Norman Hardie, Broken Stone). Inside the cottage layout was perfect for two families as there are two sides (even two kitchens!) to keep things separated if desired. There was also a great craft room for rainy days where the kids enjoyed painting rocks and playing games. There was also wireless internet and a fully stocked media console with netflix, video games, etc. for evenings or when the weather wasn't particularly nice. This was much more a 'vacation home' than a 'cottage' as it was so well-equipped. On a side note, we had arranged for family photos to be taken in the area with our extended family during our stay. The property was so beautiful that we ended up staying right onsite at Hawthorne cottage with it's beautiful gardens and shoreline. We don't have enough good things to say about our stay and hope to be back again to make more great memories in Prince Edward County. Owner Tom was a pleasure to work with in coordinating our stay. We highly recommend Hawthorne for a vacation getaway with family or friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Towels (beach and bath), water shoes, and your consumables. All linens, cookware, dishes, chairs, are provided.
Q: When can I check in?
A: We book 4:00 Saturday - 11:00 Saturday. That gives our cleaners a 5-hour window to get the place ready for the next guests. We appreciate your respecting these times.
Q: Is there a firepit?
A: Absolutely, and wood too.
Q: Do you provide boats?
A: No - our insurance agent nearly had a heart attack when I told him I was thinking of providing a canoe or kayak. But if you bring your own, the bay is an outstanding place for paddling.
Q: Our kids love the water...?
A: We have 115 feet of shoreline, with a limestone base, essentially weed-free. The bay is shallow, perfect for kids. But for the sand beach experience, North Beach is less than 10 minutes away.
Q: And our kids love to run around...?
A: The 200-foot lawn is ideal. And, it's right under the 70-foot deck, so you can keep an eye on them.
Q: We're thinking about sharing our vacation with another family / our kids and grandkids.?
A: Then it's a good thing that the cottage has two separate sides, each with 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, sitting rooms, and kitchen facilities (full kitchen on one side, microwave / fridge / sink on the other).
Q: Do you have wi-fi?
A: Yes - decent speed internet, plus monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers for your laptop; television with satellite; DVD player; soundbar; access for your netflix subscription; a Wii and a PSP2 set up.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Towels (beach and bath), water shoes, and your consumables. All linens, cookware, dishes, chairs, are provided.
Q: What else can you tell me?
A: Contact me and I can send you our "Cottage Manual" (PDF file) which contains pretty well everything you need to know.
Q: What about pets?
A: Nope. And please don't ask us to make an exception, We assure our guests an environment free of pet hairs and dust, and we won't break that promise. We're cat people ourselves, but we don't let even our own cats at Hawthorn Cottage.
