Paul and Sue provide a great little apartment within easy walking distance of the beach, the market, numerous restaurants and cafes. We had everything we needed for cooking, relaxing and lounging (lovely pool). We were very comfortable. Even better, they were able to provide us with all kinds of local information which was extremely helpful. We had a great stay and would love to return. We readily recommend Casa Yucatan.

The owners (Sue and Paul) did a wonderful job making sure we had a good time. We spent 3 weeks in their 1 bedroom apartment. It was very roomy, clean, and had everything we needed. The pool was terrific! We were within 2-5 blocks of everything - beach, restaurants, grocery store. We highly recommend Casa Yucatan.

Sue and Paul my hostess and host were very gracious and accommodating. Their property is very nice, lovely gardens and a swimming pool to enjoy after a days outing. The property is close to shopping, the sea, and and a variety of services (even a book exchange a couple of blocks away) for those of us to didn't want to pack extra weight. It was a very pleasant stay, and I will not hesitate to return. Lisa D.

Casa Yucatan

October 6, 2013

Just spent a lovely week at Casa Yucatan. Owners Sue and Paul were very gracious hosts and made our stay there very enjoyable. The apartment was large and well furnished. There is no AC, no hot water and no TV so if those things are high on your list of needs this will not be the place for you.

Sue & Paul Kinas

Owner's reply:

As advertised, no AC and no TV however we will have hot water for our next guests. We think you'll also enjoy our lovely gardens, fantastic pool area with Mayan waterfall and bamboo pergola, and don't forget Wi-Fi is included with your rent. Thanks for considering Casa Yucatan for your Progreso vacation! Sue and Paul

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where are you located?
A: We are located in the heart of Progreso. Our apartments are 5 blocks from the ocean, and 5 blocks (or less) from restaurants, the native food markets, downtown shopping, artesan markets, grocery stores, medical and dental care and more. Our street address is Calle 29, #110, between Calles 72 & 74.
Q: Do I need to rent a car?
A: Public transportation in Progreso is excellent. You can walk in Progreso to get to most places of interest. If you want to go to Merida (the big city), there is the AutoProgreso bus line that runs every 10 - 15 minutes. Taxis are readily available and extremely reasonable for other destinations . . .the beach villages, Mayan ruins, wildlife watching . . .just about anywhere you want to go, you can reach it on some form of public transportation.
Q: What is your neighborhood like?
A: Our neighborhood is a quiet residential area. All our neighbors are Mexican. Some of our neighbors speak English, but we're also a great place to become emersed in life and activities while speaking Spanish. You'll find our home surrounded by friendly, helpful, wonderful folks that all look out for their neighbors and their guests.
Q: Can I bring US/Canadian dollars to spend in the Yucatan?
A: Dollars are accepted in some of the very touristy shops and restraunts, but the exchange rate you receive will be poor, and pesos are a much prefered method of payment. We suggest you do not bring travelers checks, as it is time consuming & inconvenient redeeming them. Usually a bank will accept them. Bringing large amounts of dollars to exchange for pesos also is not a good idea. Usually only a bank will exchange dollars to pesos, and while it can be done it is time consuming & inconvenient. The best way to bring money is to use your credit or debit card. The ATM machines at banks are safe and easy to use. Be sure to notify you credit card company the dates you will be in Mexico before you come though. The ATM will usually give you large denomation bills, go into the bank and ask for change. The vast majority of businesses will not be able to make change for you for more than a few pesos more than your purchase, so having 20, 50, & 100 peso notes is better than 200, 500, or 1,000 peso notes. Also ask for some 5 & 10 peso coins to have on hand for tipping.
Q: Who & how much do I tip?
A: Be prepared to tip almost everyone. Mexican wages are quite low, and tipping is expected. You need to tip the people who bag your groceries (5-10 pesos), the man who helps you park you car (5-10 pesos), and anywhere else you would tip people in your home area. Tip high, wages are very low, and the local people need it to help feed their families! A 15-20% tip at the restraunt is a good tip.
Q: Is smoking allowed in the Progreso area?
A: Smoking is not permitted in all restraunts, and many public buildings by Federal law. While many Mexicans smoke, the movement to ban smoking, and where you area allowed to smoke, is similar to laws in your home area. We have a no smoking policy in all of our rooms. You may smoke in the patio area if you wish.
