About the area

Upper Scott Lake Retreat is one of a few homes surrounding Upper Scott Lake, a quiet inland lake in Pullman, Michigan. Come and experience all four seasons in a secluded area of Michigan! Summer brings the fun of boating, swimming, picnicking, and relaxing. The autumn colors are spectacular around the lake and in the surrounding area. Enjoy the area's winter sports like skiing, sledding, cross country skiing, and ice skating. Spring brings the lovely colors of the flowers and leaves bursting to new life, invigorating your soul and mind after the long winter. The cottage is 10-15 minutes away from Crane's Orchards and Dutch Farms, famous for delicious pies and fruit picking. On the way to the orchards is the Fennville Winery, offering tours and wine tastings. If you like antiquing, it does not get better than this - there are many antique stores within 20 minutes, either in South Haven, Allegan, Douglas and Saugatuck or along Blue Star Highway. In the summer dune rides are a blast and the South Haven beaches are gorgeous. Go fruit picking for cherries, blueberries, raspberries and apples in nearby orchards. Art galleries in the area offer wonderful selection to take home as souvenirs. Take your canoes and kayak to different lakes and rivers - but don't forget your paddles and life-jackets! Upper Scott Lake is only 15 minutes from downtown South Haven or Saugatuck, and 25 minutes from Holland. Contact us for an extensive list of activities in the area!

Getting around

You will need a car to navigate the best sights our area has to offer.

Getting here

From Chicago: From I-294 South (or the Chicago Skyway) take I-94 East through Indiana into Michigan. Take Michigan exit 34 (196 North) toward Holland/Grand Rapids. Take 196 to exit 26, which is 109th/Pullman Road. Turn left (East) at the end of the ramp. Travel 6.4 miles to the gas station, train tracks, and flashing light. Keep going about 1 mile. You will pass the Intercare Health Clinic and Bellita’s Market, Nadeau Drive, and 54th Street. You will see the driveway marked with a signpost that says “The Hermitage” on the south side of the street. Turn right into the driveway and veer right when it forks. The house is at the end of the driveway. Reminder: Michigan is in the Eastern Time Zone. From Detroit: Take I-94 west to past Kalamazoo. Take M-40 north toward Gobles and Allegan. Pass Gobles and continue for several miles to 108th Street. Turn left on 108th street and take it until it ends. Turn right and go ½ mile north and curve left onto 109th Street. Go west for about 3 miles, past 53rd Street and past a long white picket fence on the south side of the street, and you will see the driveway marked with a signpost that says “The Hermitage” on the south side of the street. Turn left into the driveway and veer right when it forks. The house is at the end of the driveway.

“Peace and quiet”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2017

We had a wonderful time at your lake house. The landscaping is amazing, the view of the lake incredible, loved the swans. Enjoyed the fire pit and the side porch for games and breakfast. We were able to relax and communicate with nature and each other. Peaceful. The only bad thing was the well water smell is very bad and needs additive.

Owner's reply: We are so pleased to know that your time in our home was peaceful, relaxing, and enjoyable! We do treat the all the water in the home with a softener system, so we will be sure to verify that the system is working correctly.

“Wonderful Lake Home”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2017

I booked this home as in lieu Christmas gift for my three sons and their wives and my two grandchildren. This was our first time vacationing as a family and it was wonderful. The home is spacious and very clean. Each family had their own bedroom and the rest of the house was big enough for everyone to "spread out" when they wanted alone time. My grandson, who is seven, caught his first fish off the dock and was so excited! One of my sons brought his jet ski and everyone had a great time flying around the lake. The weather was in the high 80's every day we were there and the time we spent as a family was precious. The lawn is very large and great for bocce ball and can jam, which everyone played daily. What a wonderful place to stay!

Owner's reply: We are so pleased to know that your stay in our home surpassed your expectations, and we hope you will consider us for your future vacations and family events!

“Great rental, lake not good for swimming”

Reviewed 14 Apr 2017

The property and home were great and would be given 5 stars except for the lake, which is not within the owner's control. If you're happy staying on land or boating and don't care about swimming, you'll love it. Our favorite things were the fantastic lawn, use of the canoe and fire pit, and the serene setting. The kids caught a bunch of fish off the dock, too. It's super peaceful at night and the sunset is beautiful. Though if you are big swimmers like my family is, it would be best to choose a different lake. (It might be okay for very little kids who don't venture far from the shore where it's clear for 15-20 ft out.) The lake is very weedy, almost to the surface, and nearly impossible to swim in. Lake Michigan is convenient enough and we drove there several days also as previously planned. It's been two years since we were there so these next couple of things might be taken care of - one of the twin beds upstairs was very uncomfortable and the downstairs bedroom was not adequately air conditioned (though we made a call and someone brought a fan to us quickly). Loved having use of washer and dryer! Overall it was a very good stay and I would recommend.

I rented Upper Scott Lake Retreat for an "Old Friends Reunion". 5 couples from high school 50 years ago..... This was our 15 th year meeting. We are now spread out across 4 states but we meet every year. This was the best rental we have ever had. Great fishing and just all around comfort for all. Nice area for sight seeing and many orchards. Just tons of fun!!

“Great family vacation”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2016

We had a houseful of people for a long weekend and had a great time. Myself and my husband, our mothers, our two children, their spouses, and four grandchildren. Plenty of space, lots of books and games for the kids on the rainy day, everyone that wanted a canoe ride took one. Beautiful view, great fire pit, close to Lake Michigan. Lots of beach toys for the kids. The main sliding door off the dining area was a bit difficult to open, but we were glad the kids could not do it by themselves. Still, it took some muscle power. The lake was very peaceful and quiet which we loved. The people were very easy to work with and their were very clear directions posted in the house where we needed them. Hope to be back next year.

Owner's reply: We'll apply a bit of "elbow grease" to the sliding door, Bonnie. Thanks for letting us know about that, and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us!!

“Once again complete satisfaction”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2016

This is the third time we have stayed in Elizabeth's home. Her and staff do an excellent job in preparing for our stay. The man next door had firewood available for a very reasonable price. So we were able to have a fire outside every night. What a great way for our family to spend some quiet time together. And I hope we were quiet enough - grandkids so enjoyed running in the large private yard to the great sand beach and on to a whole lot of swimming. Fishing too and they loved being taken for boat rides. Of course the house was equipped with life jackets. As well as games and puzzles if we had rain. Luckily we had great weather so we all were able to enjoy this home with its lake amenities. Something we don't have back home. So in short this is a beautiful home, well equipped and easy to reach stafff if need be. Othrwise they completely leave us to enjoy our stay. Which we did. Thank you. Hope we can return.

Owner's reply: We just love having you stay with us, Susan, and we hope you continue to make our home your favored vacation destination :)

“Awesome place”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2016

We had 7 adults and 4 children stay here with ample room. It was clean and comfortable. The only issue we had was trash pick up, the container was full when we arrived. My husband called to see about pick up and no one returned his call. Otherwise it was great, we are considering it again for next year.

Owner's reply: We apologize for the miscommunication, Marcia, but we are so pleased to know that you enjoyed your stay with us!

“Awesome Place!”

We planned a family girls trip for a weekend, and we were all so happy with our stay here! It is in a great location where we could easily get to restaurants and wineries. We brought a lot of own things, but this house provided quite a bit! We enjoyed the large deck, the sand and beach are right in back, and that it came with a kayak! Very kid friendly as well and plenty of space!

Owner's reply: We are so pleased that you and the girls had a great time, Emily! I love canoeing on the lake myself :)

“Private with lots of outdoor space”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2016

The privacy and large yard with beach and dock were beautiful to view and to enjoy. We found ourselves relaxing in the peacefulness of the setting. The house with fully stocked kitchen and large eating area, along with the family room with pool and ping pong and the large bedrooms provided great indoor space. The screen room with lots of seating has lots of potential to relax and enjoy, but with the great weather and no mosquitoes, we spent most of our time enjoying the outdoors. This home is great for the price.

“Annual Summer Trip”

Reviewed 22 Jun 2016

We get together with 4 other couples every year and have stayed in various places around Michigan. All agreed that this was one of the best. We brought a boat and with great weather were able to enjoy the lake. We also loved the big fire pit and flat yard for bean bag! Beds were nice. Happy that we had 2 full baths to share and not 1 bath and a master bath. Kitchen was functional with lots of seating for dinners. The only negative we found was no table outside on the massive deck. Lots of chairs though! Great place for families and large groups.

Owner's reply: We definitely appreciate the feedback, Cathy, and we plan to get some tables on the deck for an extra dining option.

In 2012, we added unlimited local and long distance calling!

We had a fine time at the beach house. The sand and shallow water were great for the grandkids. We were outside alot, but did enjoy the air conditioning as it was hot.
Thanks for all the info you sent me.

05-11-2012 Great getaway! (Jensen)
We stayed here for 3 days 2 nights with our 3 children and their 2 cousins. The house was clean, spacious and inviting. It rained for one of the days but it was good for fishing! We had a problem with our boat trailer and the maintenance guy next door Randy was very helpful and his friend was able to help us out. I would stay here again. We had a good time and so did our kids! Thanks!

We enjoyed our time in MI. House was great as was the surrounding area. My grandson, who is almost 3, had an especially fun time, of course! The house is spacious, so there was lots of room for it and it worked out well.

Thanks very much...hope to return next year.

First of all Elizabeth was such a pro and made booking so easy and never hesitated answering what seemed like a zillion quesions. Directions were perfect-- My first impression was the yard, wow, beautiful landscaping, well maintained. Walked in to home and another wow--clean, spacious and inviting. There were 11 in our party and it never felt like we were on top of each other--there is plenty of room to be alone or be with everyone. Highlights were playing pool. ping pong, canoeing and of course that great firepit. If I had to, had to say something that I didn't like it would be a small skillet where my eggs didn't stick, but hey, maybe it was my cooking skills for that day. You can tell pride in ownership and I for one (my family seconded) cannot wait to return. That wonderful secluded, yet everything at your fingertips feeling was AWESOME!!! Thanks for making this trip a memory for the books and so easy to plan. I consider myself lucky! If you are contemplating staying here don't think twice but stay away from my week :)
