You can throw a coconut from the front yard into Punaluu Bay!

Setting on the water's edge of Punalu'u Beach Park, you can literally see the visitors arriving and departing, buying souvenirs and snacks at the concession stands just across the way -- and have an exclusive view of the back side of the lifeguard's station!
Punalu'u Beach Park is THE famous Black Sand Beach (for the Big Island) known for "where the Hawaiian green sea turtles come a shore"!
There are two Lindall cedar homes, Gambrel designed, built eight feet off the ground to take advantage of the gentle ocean breezes and the stunning views.
The large home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a loft, (sleeping up to 6 adults comfortably) and a large living room with sweeping views of the beach and bay. A lanai (porch) spans the front of the house with staircases leading down to two acres of manicured lawn shaded by a bounty of coconut trees marching majestically to the very shore of the Bay.
The smaller cottage is a one bedroom with full bath, living room and a complete a mini kitchen. A cozy retreat for a romantic, secluded honeymoon or vacation!
The Beach Cottage and Beach Home are both fully furnished, including dishes, cookware, linens and all the accessories needed to make your stay comfortable and worry-free!
The property sits on 2 acres of land, which includes private parking under the 8 foot lifted homes. Roadways around the area are paved, house has full public electricity and "local piped water", fully plumbed.
These homes are beach homes -- they are not luxurious nor are they intended to be. They couldn't really blend into the area or be near as authentic or enjoyable were they made fancy! When in the "big house" the outside as seen thru your large picture windows almost seems like you are "there" and, pinch yourself -- indeed you are.
Nothing else comes close to a retreat spent here.

Kiʻi pohaku (petroglyphs) can be found near the County Park Pavilions within a protected area surrounded by a rock wall just past the parking area. It is easy to miss these “unmarked†ancient carvings.

Great place! We enjoyed having the black sands right in our front yard!
Unable to stay but want to

We were unable to get ahold of the owners of this home, but would be very interested in making plans for next year
Location nice, but disappointed

Although we enjoyed the location of the Black Sands cabin, it did not meet our expectation. The cabin sinks, tubs and overall cleanliness were unsatisfactory. On the first night we noticed roaches on the counters and found a live scorpion in the tub. After a thorough cleaning and storing all food in the refrigerator we did not have a problem with the bugs for the remainder of our stay. Kitchen ware was available, but also needed to be cleaned prior to use. We did enjoy the spaciousness of the cabin. The beds were very comfortable and the linens were clean and plentiful. The instructions on how to use the hot water heater, stove and other details were very useful and well written. Overall, after the initial shock, we did enjoy the stay for our two nights on the island.

We had a great time. We took care of our business in town and came back to relax, and enjoy the beach house which was just steps away from the beach. The houses were well stocked with everything. The counters & floors were dusty and the furniture dated, and the house needs some TLC, but overall the experience of the place is priceless. The grandkids spent as much time as they could at the beach-from morning till as late as we would allow. We did get both the house and the cottage but the house had enough room for all of us. We would reccommend the place and use it ourselves again.
Lovely get away!

LOVE LOVE LOVED this location....couldn't ask for anything better for your own private swimming pond & snorkeling right out back. Cottage is "just that" one bedroom...could use a bed instead of 2 futons. But prefer this to almost any of the ritzy resorts we've stayed at.
Disgusting bedding, broken blinds and shower
November 13, 2011
We were prepared for rustic, not for pillows so old, flat, and stained that they were impossible to sleep on, sheets that were pilled from being washed so many times, and soap in the bathroom that had evidence of prior use. No place comfortable to sit or sleep, lighting too weak to read by, blinds broken so that you could not pull them down against the sun. Yes, the view to the black sand beach is spectacular, but if you can't sleep and are disgusted by stained pillows underneath plastic crackly cases what good does that do? I'm fine with simple furnishings, but how much would it cost to change the pillows and mattresses every few years? Save yourself some misery and don't stay here.

This was a great beach front getaway. From day one just the scenery from the balcony was incredible. The house is located basically in the center of the beach and your view scans from one end of the bay to the other. Just the crash of the ocean and feel of the cool breeze soothe and relax your senses as you just sit and stare at the picturesque beauty before you. The black sand beach is incredible. We had many opportunities to photo turles as they crawl up the beach to lay in the sun. If you venture into the water you can find yourself surrounded by them feeding in the shallows almost oblivious to your presence. An underwater camera is a must. The house is exactly as described, kind of a simple country home. We stayed in the front room which kept perfectly cool with the on shore winds blowing. The kitchen was fully stocked for all the cooking that was done for the three families staying within the house. I've stayed at the fancy on shore condo type areas, but this place is something that the kids and I will remember for a long time. This is the type of Hawaiian country experience that will last in our memories for life.
Jim, you have a special place there. Our entire week was marvelous, but was glad I planned for your place to be the grand finale. The four of
us went out on the beach our last night and marveled at the stars, a priceless moment.
I hadn't appreciated how few of the black sand beaches have survived the eruptions over the last 15 years. Just out of curiousity, are there any
others left? I saw the one at Pololu Valley that involves a good hike to get to, but didn't notice any others during our explorations of the island.
...it's one of the few homes at Punaluu Black Sand Beach...
God bless and mahalo.
