Description from owner

When your family pulls up in front of Saltair you will say wow! before you even get out of the car. The garden bursts with color most of the year and the blue front door is a cheerful welcome to a cozy beachside cottage. Walk up to the porch, hear those ocean waves? Aah! Now you are officially in vacation mode! This is the quiet, more spacious end of town where you will see and hear more nature than neighbors. Built in the 1920s and completely redone from the studs out less than 10 years ago, you're stepping into a new house with old charm. The blue and white color scheme with blond wood accents throughout is soothing, and the cathedral ceiling and skylights makes it open and roomy. Wireless internet access and cable TV are there for those who like to stay in touch.

Your kids will immediately run upstairs and claim the sleeping loft for themselves. You'll be delighted when you check the cabinets in the kitchen. Spices and kitchen basics and good quality pots and pans are plentiful, even the gourmet chef of the family will be pleased. And the extras will make you smile, too. Blender to make Tillamook ice cream milkshakes? Check! Espresso machine? Check! Forks for roasting marshmallows at the patio Chimenea? Crab crackers? Oyster shuckers? Sharp knives? Check, check and check! The house holds 8 people, four in the sleeping loft with twin mattresses, and two bedrooms for couples in queen beds downstairs. The renters say having two bathrooms is a definite A plus!

Enter the beach at the paved access path across the street where you walk under a canopy of trees that opens up to the seven mile stretch of a sparsely populated beach. After a restful night in beds made with quality linens, take your cup of coffee and crossword out to the bench at the end of the path and say good morning to the Twin Rocks rising majestically out of the waves from the end of the path.

Your kids will find beach toys at the back door, kites in the closer, games and puzzles under the window seat and many current and favorite DVDs. Have a toddler? A drawer full of socket protectors and a safety gate are here for you and the four mattresses in the sleeping loft are easy access beds for the little ones. The loft window has a safety guard.

Winter: Gale winds might blow but the house is sturdy and as tight as a drum. Go on, brave the weather to walk on the beach then throw your wet clothes in the washer and dryer while you shower in one of the two bathrooms. Take an afternoon trip on Highway 101 and catch a glimpse of the whale migration at the vista points. Cozy up in the window seat with a good book and watch the tall fir trees in the distance dance in the wind. Open the doors under the window seat to find all types of family games. Santa finds this house at Christmas, too!

Spring: What will be up in the garden next? What will the next hour bring in terms of weather? You'll get it all in any given day, except snow and ice. Get out the kite and go up the beach to mingle with the professionals while they fly their big guys at the annual Kite festival. Do a bonfire on the beach and grab the marshmallows and get roasting.

Summer: You have seen Norman Rockwell paintings. Well there is a connection when you think of the small town Fourth of July parade and fireworks held here in town. Hear that steam engine train whistle? Yes, this is the real thing, take your family for a ride on the train and go along the bay to past jutting rocks and fishing boats at the mouth of the jetty to Garibaldi and back. The garden is bursting with color and hummingbirds love the fuchsias. How many butterflies do you see?

Fall: Here's a secret many vacationers don't know. Some of the mildest and most beautiful sunny weather can happen in September and October at the Oregon Coast. If you have never been to the coast during these months, you are missing out! Get your Netarts oysters from the docks in Garibaldi and smoke them on the barbecue for a wonderful appetizer before your crab feast. Drop another log on the fire in the chimenea and feel how the stone patio warms you up in the cooling night air. Your family tradition should be Thanksgiving at the beach! Watch the game on the cable TV while the turkey is cooking in the oven.

About the area

Need a break from the beach? If you can tear yourself away from Saltair, hop in the car and go see the nearby sights. Take a short drive south to the docks of Garibaldi and buy your crab or fish dinner directly from the day's catch of the local fishermen. The artists' community of Cannon Beach is also a popular day trip from the house. Browse the antique malls in Wheeler. Rockaway Beach has some too! Take a hike in Nehalem Bay State Park. Or, stay right in the neighborhood, nature walks don’t even need a car. We have a 45.6-acre Old-Growth Cedar Wetlands Preserve is just across 101. Walk up Washington Street and into the Preserve paths to see the gentle giant: a 200 year old Cedar tree. A drive north on Highway 101 leads to breath-taking views of the ocean, state parks with paths back down to the beach and coastal towns with fun shopping. Going south, a short drive will take you through fishing towns and farmland. Visit the lighthouse at Cape Meares, or the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Fudge! Ice Cream! Cheese Curds! 12 miles south from Saltair is the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center; a must see for weavers, knitters and quilters, with changing exhibits and locally made gifts. Want to see more? “My Go-To Getaway!”

Reviewed 19 Sep 2016

I love this little cottage and have stayed here twice. It is charming in every way, beautifully decorated, comfy cozy beds, well appointed with all that you need for a comfortable stay. It is perfectly situated in a quiet neighborhood with a lovely, tree arched walking path to the beach. The path breaks out onto a most beautiful, quiet part of the beach away from town, with those twin rocks right there. The owner of this cottage is delightful to correspond with and sensitive to any issues or needs of the tenant. I can't say enough good about this sweet, charming getaway!

“Wonderful stay in a lovely cottage”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2016

Saltair was everything we wanted. The home was light, comfortable, charming and with a lovely short walk to the ocean. The beds were so comfortable and the showers just right. The landscaping around the cottage was equally as charming as the house. We walked everywhere and were fortunate to have had beautiful weather. We had family members staying at other places in Rockaway Beach so we just thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Could not have been more delighted.

Owner's reply: It's nice to hear you like the beautiful short path to the ocean as much as I do. It is a peaceful walk in such a beautifully natural setting and the paved path is good for people with some walking difficulty. It and the house are special and I am glad you got a chance to be there! Thank you for your kind review.

“The Sweetest Cottage in Rockaway!”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2015

I escaped to the seashore with 3 of my closest friends to celebrate my retirement. Saltair Cottage was our destination! And how sweet it was! Perfectly situated at the end of a gorgeous wooded trail leading to the most beautiful, quiet beach! The Cottage is fully equipped, totally comfortable and absolutely adorable. Working with the owner was a breeze and a delight. It is clear from reading comments in the guestbook, that the owner goes over and above to provide for and accommodate those staying in her cottage. We have decided this should be an annual event and will definitely be returning to this delightful haven. Thank you, Jeannine!

Owner's reply: Thanks, Julie, now that you're retired you should come back often! The winter storms on the Oregon Coast are also beachworthy with high waves to watch. Wtih the cozy house and a warm shower or bath upon your return you can walk the beach rain or shine!

“As always a wonderful stay!”

Reviewed 31 Aug 2015

I forgot to write in the book before I left so I wanted to post here to let you know that once again we had a wonderful stay at your beautiful home. The only problem is that the week goes too fast and its time to return to real life. I may just try to get another trip in before the years end, if not we'll see you again over spring break! The Fahey's

Owner's reply: Thanks for the nice review. I hear you had some very stormy weather for a few days at the end of your week, but that just adds to the whole experience, doesn't it?

“Great beach cottage!”

Our second year in a row to stay here and we will be back next year! A beautiful cottage nicely furnished and very close to the beach. We love everything about it and were even fortunate enough to have beautiful weather. Will be checking next years calender to see when we can schedule our next visit!

“Charming House with all the amenities!!”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2015

This is our 3rd time staying here and we don't plan on staying elsewhere in the future...and believe me, we will be back!!! Great layout and Jeanine has thought of all the little extras that make the house more of a home than a rental.

“October whale watching stay”

Reviewed 23 Dec 2014

Went to stay at this great cottage once again! This house has everything and a close walk down to the beach! We drove to Depoe Bay to go whale watching and the drive was amazing. We saw plenty of whales too.

Owner's reply: Thank you! Saltair really a great home base. It is in the middle of many short and wonderful coast trips, north and south.

“charming”

Excellent location close to the breach,, super clean, and stocked with everything one could want. Totally satisfied with our stay.

Owner's reply: Thanks for emphasizing the location! Although Saltair does not an ocean view, it's close enough to hear those waves!

“Saltair Cottage”

The cottage is welcoming, very clean and comfortable. We felt right at home. The kitchen was well stocked with all the utensils and appliances you would ever need. The beach was close and the nearby restaurants were very good. We definitely hope to return.

Owner's reply: Thanks! Isn't that beach path just right? Not too long and the trees and bushes and birds are so pleasant to walk through with the ocean's roar beckoning ahead.
