About the area
Russell, also known as Kororareka in Maori, is the oldest town in New Zealand. We are located in the north of the North Island which is also the warmest part of the country. Rich in history both European and Maori, Russell boasts the oldest church in NZ, Christ Church, the first French mission, and a colorful past which once earned the town the monkier of "The Hellhole of the Pacific". Pirates, whalers, game fishermen, missionaries and explorers of all nationalities have visited our bay waters. Zane Grey and Captain Cook are among such memorable historical figures.
Today the village is a tranquil, lovely respite from the hustle of metropolitan life and is therefore the choice of many summer residents from Auckland. Our full time population, although small, comprises a diverse community. Among the 700 permanent Russellites are Germans,Dutch, Italians, Canadians, Americans, Maori, Pacific Islanders, young children and seniors. There is something to do every night from simply fishing off of the wharf to ball room dancing. If yoga or pilates is your style, classes are offered three times a week. Yacht (any boat with sails is considered a yacht) charters are available and again the choices range from the tall sailing ship (Tucker Thompson) to the more intimate 50 ft
Phantom that takes only 10 passengers. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and diving are available, and all four of Russell's beaches are within walking distance of the house! For those who play, there is a public tennis court centrally located in town and hiking trails lead from one end of the area to another. In addition to activities, the town has 14 restaurants, several licensed massage therapists, hair salon, medical center, groceries, shops and art galleries.
Did I mention golf? Within a half hour of Russell is Waitangi Golf Course, which parallels a beautiful 9 kilometer round trip walking track to Harruru Falls. Another, world class golf opportunity exists at Kauri Cliffs, located not far outside Kerikeri, a mere 40 kilometers away from Russell.
