At Camp Ellis there are two local restaurants, a bait & tackle shop, a mile-long jetty to fish from or just to walk on, a large dock with both fishing & pleasure boats in the harbor. You can also fish right off Surf St. in Ferry Beach at high tide or off the beach itself. The tackle shop in Camp Ellis is on the dock area. Camp Ellis is a "Fishing Village" area now dotted with newly-remodeled homes and some of the older ones still here. It is still an active fishing area for commercial lobstermen & fishermen. You can go over to the dock and watch both fishing vessels and pleasure boats. Nearby is the Camp Ellis General Store which features daily lobster catch during season & will cook to perfection while you. You can also buy lobsters directly from the lobsterman, Dean Coniaris, the Fish'n Optician at "boat prices". You wouldd have to cook them yourself if bought from him. Whale watching & deep-sea fishing boats leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. Kayak rentals are nearby for use on the Saco River which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay.
Both areas are quaint areas, catering to families, sandy beaches (smaller one at Camp Ellis), unspoiled by high rises.
When you go to the beach and have to go back for lunch, etc., you will not need to bring your blanket or chairs back. No one will touch them when you are gone. It's that type of a beach and is an area catering to families. Many families generations return here year after year for vacations.

Reviews for this vacation home rental in Saco, Maine

We had a great time during our week at Sue up/Sue down! We rented both for our extended family vacation! The outside shower was great and all the indoor updates were beautiful. Perfect distance to everything and decent ocean views for not being right on the water. Plenty of sleep spaces for everyone. Bring room darkening shades if you don't want to rise with the sun ;-). Shower space was small but not impossible. Overall great place and would be my first pick again if you're not looking for right on the water but perfect walking distance!
What a Complete Gem

My family and I were honored to be the first guests to stay in Sue Up and Down. The owner is a sweetheart, as are her neighbors and friends, and the renovations done on the first floor are breathtaking. The floors are to die for, and exactly what I need to find for my own home. Even the upstairs, while it is a little more aged, was spacious and comfortable. The contractor who did the renovations came out while we were there and told us the upper floor is being renovated next year. The location is magnificent. You are literally 2/10ths of a mile from the general store, two houses down from Huots, next door to a lobsterman, and approximately three doors from the start of the beach. Hit it at low tide and you can walk all the way to Ferry Beach State Park. We did that many times, with our dogs. While some Maine beaches ban dogs certain hours, leashed dogs are welcome. There are plenty of trash bins for tossing out pet waste. Over the years, my brother, parents, and my own family have stayed in many Maine rental homes. Of all of them, Camp Ellis in Saco is our favorite. We loved the dog-friendly attitudes (only one woman on the beach showed any signs of not liking the dogs present), the location is ideal, and there is so much space in this home, on the wraparound patios, and in the yard. I've stayed in Wells, Kittery, York, Ogunquit, and Bailey Island, and Camp Ellis wins as the place I would want to live in. Don't be surprised to make some friends during your trip. Saco and Biddeford's shopping are less than 10 miles. We hit Run of the Mill Brewery a few times, it's not far away at all, and loved how quickly we were able to get around without the GPS.
Wonderful time by the relaxing coast of Maine

I was so happy to find this cozy house which totally met all our needs: my senior mom, a teenager, two adults plus two rescue puppies were with us. The home was well equipped and clean when we arrived, the neighbors nice and the contact with the renters and owners was lovely. Thanks very much! I hope to come again soon!
Camp Ellis and Ferry Beach are the greatest family areas. We've been coming to this area for 3 generations now and wouldn't miss a summer in Saco.
"Camp Ellis is such a quaint area. We enjoyed the uncrowded beach area. Took in all the local attractions along with all the shopping both north and south."
"We had a great week here at Ferry Beach! The beach is wonderful and uncrowded. The area has provided almost everything we needed within walking distance. We're looking forward to next year."
