About the area

Saco beaches (Ferry Beach, Camp Ellis) are located 2-1/2 – 3 miles south of Old Orchard Beach and are at the ocean on Saco Bay. Old Orchard has amusements & gift shops. From the beach, it’s about 5 miles to Funtown which is a theme park & water park; about 7 miles to the Aquaboggin, a water park; 5 miles to major supermarkets. Saco & Old Orchard are half way between Kittery & Freeport for outlet shopping; 20 minutes to South Portland to a major mall and 20 minutes to Portland. We’re about 1-1/2 hours or so from the Boston area. The Old Orchard Beach/Saco exit is Exit 36 mile marker once you're on the Maine Turnpike (I-95). Saco & Old Orchard are about 30 or so minutes north of Wells & Kennebunk areas. Ocean Park (is part of Old Orchard) & Pine Point (Scarborough) is about 1-1/2 miles north of Old Orchard. Both are also similar areas - both are very popular areas and definitely family oriented as are the beach areas in Saco. From Ferry Beach in Saco it’s a short walk to Camp Ellis where the Saco River meets the ocean. There is great fishing in both areas. Ferry Beach & Camp Ellis are quaint areas, catering to families, sandy beaches (smaller one at Camp Ellis), unspoiled by high rises. At Ferry Beach & Camp Ellis, when you go to the beach and have to go back for lunch, etc., you will not need to bring your blanket or chairs back. No one will touch them when you’re gone. Both are this type of areas, catering to families and are great for little kids. Families return here year after year for vacations. Camp Ellis is a "Fishing Village" areanow dotted with newly-remodeled. It is still an active fishing area for commercial lobstermen & fishermen. You can go over to the dock and watch both fishing vessels and pleasure boats. Nearby is the Camp Ellis General Store which features daily lobster catch during season & will cook to perfection while you wait or return to pick them up. They also serve breakfast. In Camp Ellis you can also buy lobsters at "boat prices directly from our friend & neighbor and lobsterman Dean Coniaris, the "Fish ‘n Optician". . Deep-sea fishing boats and whale-watching boats leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. Kayak rentals are nearby for use on the Saco River, which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay. If you have a boat, you can launch it at the docks here. At Camp Ellis there is a very popular restaurant, eat in or take out (specializing in seafood), a bait & tackle shop, deep-sea fishing boats leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. Kayak rentals are nearby for use on the Saco River, which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay. There is also a mile-long jetty to fish from or just to walk on, a large dock with both fishing & pleasure boats in the harbor, You can also fish right off Surf St. at the end of the street where Armstrong is at high tide or off the beach itself. The tackle shop in Camp Ellis is on the dock area. From the docks you can rent jet skis and also go para-sailing too.
