Area Information
Old Orchard has a beautiful beach called Grand Beach. It's the best in the State of Maine. There are shops, eateries, amusements, an arcade & a pier at Old Orchard Beach. Amtrak runs trains from Boston to Portland daily with stops in Saco year round and in Old Orchard during summer season. Saco & Old Orchard are adjacent towns. Scarborough (Pine Point) is adjacent to Old Orchard Beach.

Saco & Old Orchard are half way between Kittery & Freeport for outlet shopping; 20 minutes to South Portland to a major mall and 20 minutes +/- to Portland. The Old Port is at the waterfront with shops. There are also many shops along Rte. 1 for antique stuff between Wells & Scarborough. We're about 1-1/2 hours or so from the Boston area.

Saco beaches are named: Kinney Shore, Bay View , Ferry Beach & Camp Ellis. Kinney Shores is adjacent to Old Orchard. Ferry Beach, Camp Ellis & Bay View are located about 2 miles south of Old Orchard Beach and are at the ocean on Saco Bay. (see info below). Bay View is a little more prestigious area. State law now prohibits bonfires on any beach in Maine. Old Orchard has amusements & gift shops. From the beach, it's about 5 miles to Funtown USA which is a theme park & water park; about 7 miles to the Aquaboggin, a water park; 5 miles to major supermarkets. Another attraction is "bird watching", especially at the Scarborough Marsh, which is about a 5-minute drive from Old Orchard & 10 minutes from Saco. Others nearby are the Saco Heath, Kennebunk Plains, Two-Lights in Scarborough (in the off season) &, Biddeford Pool to name a few.

The Old Orchard Beach/Saco exit is Exit 36 mile marker once you're on the Maine Turnpike (I-95). Saco & Old Orchard are about 30 or so minutes north of Wells & Kennebunk areas. Ocean Park (is part of Old Orchard) & Pine Point (Scarborough-is about 1-1/2 miles north of Old Orchard). Both are also similar areas - both are very popular areas and definitely family oriented as are the beach areas in Saco. There's a petting zoo in York, also about 40 minutes south and a smaller petting farm in Scarborough, about 30 minutes from Saco.

Bay View is adjacent to Ferry Beach and some of the properties are more "private". This area is a little more "upscale". Nice wide beach here. Kinney Shores is between Ocean Park area of Old Orchard and the Bay View area in Saco.

Ferry Beach & Camp Ellis are quaint areas, catering to families, sandy beaches (smaller one at Camp Ellis), unspoiled by high rises. We're 3 miles south of Old Orchard, a 2 to 3-minute car ride but is walkable.

From Ferry Beach in Saco it's a short walk to Camp Ellis where the Saco River meets the ocean. There is great fishing in both areas.

At the Saco beaches, when you go to the beach and have to go back for lunch, etc., you will not need to bring your blanket or chairs back. No one will touch them when you're gone. It's that type of beaches and areas catering to families and are great for little kids. Families return here year after year for vacations.

Camp Ellis is a "Fishing Village" dotted with newly-remodeled. It is still an active fishing area for commercial lobstermen & fishermen. You can go over to the dock and watch both fishing vessels and pleasure boats. There's also a small beach at the dock area at the river's edge.

Nearby is the Camp Ellis General Store which features daily lobster catch during season & will cook to perfection while you wait or return to pick them up. They also serve breakfast.

In Camp Ellis you can also buy lobsters at "boat prices directly from our friend & neighbor, the lobsterman Dean Coniaris, the "Fish 'n Optician". You'd have to cook them yourself if bought from him. He's open daily at 4:00 and is on the road going out of Camp Ellis. His house is red with a Fish'n Optician sign.

Deep-sea fishing boats and Whale Watching tours leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. There are also jet ski rentals and paragliding out of the dock area. Kayak rentals are nearby for use on the Saco River, which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay. There are also jet skis that can be rented from the dock area and para-gliding.

Little kids like to do "crabbing" at the dock in Camp Ellis as well as seeing the boats coming and going. There is a Bait & Tackle shop right on the dock and has the bags for crabbing, charges $1, I believe. But once bought from him, fills it with bait free (year after year). If children are age 10 or less and go on the dock, you will need a life jacket. He also rents poles for people who didn't bring their fishing poles.

At Camp Ellis there are two local restaurants (specializing in seafood), a bait & tackle shop, deep-sea fishing boats leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. Kayak rentals are nearby for use on the Saco River, which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay. There is also a mile-long jetty to fish from or just to walk on, a large dock with both fishing & pleasure boats in the harbor, a large dock with both fishing & pleasure boats in the harbor. You can also fish right off Surf St. in Ferry Beach at high tide or off the beach itself. The tackle shop in Camp Ellis is on the dock area. You can fish off the beaches also.

Because of the restaurants it's a little busier down near the dock area at dinnertime. Streets leading to and from the dock are each one-way; North Ave. one way going in & Eastern Ave. is one-way leaving the area.

They have bicycle rentals in Old Orchard, on W. Grand Ave.

Golfing: There are several golf courses here. Closest to Camp Ellis would be Saco-Biddeford Country Club; in OOB it's called Dunegrass. There's another one in Saco. Other locations also are in Scarborough, So. Portland, Sanford, etc.........
